I plan to give my son a phone for his 11th bday. Is that too young? he would only use it to call my wife, myself, the nanny or his grandparents for rides, etc.

No. Not at all. Think of it this way - if he is in a situation where he needs to call someone and doesn't have a way to do so, you will kick yourself in the face for not having gotten him a phone. Plus, he can kill time with games and Netflix etc......

The answer I heard for this question that I liked the most was, when they start having extra-curricular activities with after school practice. Since those times can end early and there is not an adult assigned to supervise once practice is let out, you want your child to have the ability to contact you.

He'll be a pro after a month and can probably help you with your next phone

or to change the time on the VCR from this

I don't think there is an age when they get a phone, I think it's when you determine that they are responsible enough to take care of it and use it properly. I've seen 6 year olds that I wouldn't have a problem with having a phone and I've seen 20 year olds that shouldn't have one.

We have an extra phone that we give to our 10 year old when he is away from the house(spending the night off, out of town, camp, etc). When he gets back home the phone is returned and put away until he is away again.

I have seen 20-40 year olds that shouldn't have one because they leave them at the bar all the time and lose them. My wife likes to drop them and break screens, that's her thing...

I would say the average now is 10-11 years old when they are in 5th-6th grade in their last year of middle school. By that time they may already be going to sleep overs with friends, walking home from school, after school sports activities, etc. so it's good to be able to contact them or "find my iphone" them whenever you want. Plus with iphones you can set restrictions on phone usage as you wish. There are limitless options for restrictions for kids on iphones.

I have three boys 16, 12 and 7 year old and my older two boys got theirs around that time and no regrets so far as long as they are responsible with their phones.

We got rid of our house phone about two years ago and got a track phone for the kids to use to check in after school. Then once my daughter started field hockey (12 yrs old) we gave it to her full time (she takes it back n forth to her dads too) and got another track phone for the house. She is now 14 and my son is 11. The new track phone stays here unless my son goes somewhere then he takes it along but not to his dads. They are only allowed to text or call. No Internet etc. Probably when baseball starts up this summer and he turns 12 we will probably just let him have it like she did. His son is also 11 and he also has a track phone but barely uses it. Once they get older we will consider smartphones but for the little bit of usage right now a smart phone would be a waste of money.
