very interesting replies, thank you. all 3 that i saw tonight, the players that hit the cross-court winners were hitting from roughly halfway between the net and the baseline. i don't remember if they were forehands, backhands, or some of both. all 3 times, i thought the cross-court shot right over the center of the net looked like the easiest shot and, well, it was. it's interesting that coaches teach to cover the line. at least in that situation. if you take away the cross-court, not only are you forcing your opponent to hit over the highest part of the net, but they also need to be accurate because they don't want to hit the ball out. when they hit the cross-court shot, they have a MUCH larger target.

alright, that's it for me for the night. i can't watch any more of sramkova missing every first serve and ostepenko CRUSHING every second serve.

Larger target...yes

longer distance to hit that shot....also yes

and

if player at net hits the cross court reply.....he has a much easier volley to "put the ball away"

I bet if you asked the top coaches in the world, almost all of em would say "cover the line" (when approach shot is hit down the line). But as I said above, it is programmed in your head at a young age to "cover the line", it is second nature, it is almost impossible to get that out of your head.

As always, Smitty was profitable in the first round. I'm usually ok in the second round, too. After that... meh.

Majchrzak +2.5 games (vs Marozsan) 2.3 to win 2
Fery (vs Etcheverry) 4 to win 5
Opelka/ADF Over 42.5 games 2.1 to win 2
Nava/Norrie Over 39.5 4.8 to win 4
Parlay Fery win 2 sets/Cerundolo/Tien 3 to win 4

Only play on the ladies side tonight is very chalky.

Parlay Mboko (for kick!)/Jovic/Andreeva 6.1 to win 5
