Does anybody own one? Have you used one before? Is it worth it? I'm looking to buy a new grill and I've heard some high praise about this thing. One thing that has me hesitating is the high price.

Anyone have a different suggestion for a grill? One thing that drew me to the Egg was the charcoal cooking. I'm a big fan of that taste charcoal gives as opposed to a gas grill.

That's why I got it and it's the bomb. I love my EGG and there are a few others around here that have them and love them too. :0074

Jack, how's the smoking capability on that thing? That's one of the main reasons I'm looking at it because I like that versatility.

So I stopped by a BBQ store today and took a look at the Large EGG in person, which was selling for $899 there. I really liked it and I'm sold on the product, I just don't have that much to spend right now. They told me the medium was $600, but they didn't have one on the floor for me to look at. I had the salesguy print me out a summary for the large grill, plate setter and stand, which came out to around $1250 all together. He kept saying that I was going to want to get the grill cover too, which costs another hundred, but I said to leave it off. I also ran in to another customer who was there buying an Egg accessory, so I asked him if he thought the grill was worth the price tag. While he told me he loved it in front of the salespeople, when I ran into him in the parking lot, he admitted that maybe he overpaid some for his Egg but that they are selling the Medium Egg at Costco for $500 and they have a Large Egg knockoff grill there for $500 as well. If any eggheads are out there, maybe you can help me with one or two of these questions:

- I'm probably going to be cooking regularly for just 1-3 people. On the rare occasion I may cook for 5-6, but that might be once every few months. Do I even really need the large model? It seemed pretty big in the store, maybe too big. Are there others with the medium Egg that can chime in here?

- Do I even need the expensive name brand cover? I live in LA so it's not like there's a lot of adverse weather conditions here. Does a tarp work just as well?

- What other stands/nests besides the standard metal one with 4 wheels would you recommend? I liked the large wooden table stand they had in this store, but it's $500. I like the idea of a table, but don't want to spend that much. Maybe there are smaller tables out there?

- I see a lot of people have the set of grill mates, mostly the wooden ones. Are those stable? Do they provide sufficient space when grilling?

- Do I really need a $30 charcoal cleaning tool? Can't I get any kind of similar tool at Target for much less?

- What other accessories for the egg do you like? I'm thinking I'll just get the basics at first, but I want to plan for down the line.

- Has anyone had an experience or heard anything negative or positive about other ceramic grills on the market like the Grill Dome, Primo or Kamado King?

I'm pouring through the Big Green Egghead website and the Egghead forums as I write this, but I wanted to hear some more objective opinions from guys on this site which I tend to trust more than others. Any comments/answers would be much appreciated :0008

I can't answer it all right now, I'm about done.

You need a large, forget the medium, and you do not need a cover at all.

You need an electric starter and if you're talking about that tool that scrapes out the ashes, I think you need it for convenience.

I got the nest on wheels but it was all a package and I think I paid around $1000 for everything including the plate setter which you definitely need.

All the other stuff can be bought at Lowes depending on what you need.

If you're looking for something that is easy cooking, you might want to look at something else. But, I don't think there's anything out there that will give you better tasting food. :0008

Oh, you need a thermometer too. A couple of them.

- I'm probably going to be cooking regularly for just 1-3 people. On the rare occasion I may cook for 5-6, but that might be once every few months. Do I even really need the large model? I have the large model. It works great for cooking for 8 people on a regular basis. Of course I do burgers and hot dogs, but I also do a flank steak and cook it for 6 hours while I smoke it. So keep in mind you're not always cooking single serving food like burgers.

- Do I even need the expensive name brand cover? I live in LA so it's not like there's a lot of adverse weather conditions here. Does a tarp work just as well? I keep mine in the garage. You should too if you can. You don't need the expensive brand cover - you could probably get it on eBay for less so keep that in mind. The BGE cover is more for HOA's that have deck standards IMO.

- What other stands/nests besides the standard metal one with 4 wheels would you recommend? I liked the large wooden table stand they had in this store, but it's $500. I like the idea of a table, but don't want to spend that much. Maybe there are smaller tables out there? GET THE WOODEN TABLE. That's what I have. It is more useful that you would think. Also, you really need haggle that shit. Go back and name your price WITH THE OWNER or manager. If he says no, walk the fuck out. They have more wriggling room on that shit than you might think.

- I see a lot of people have the set of grill mates, mostly the wooden ones. Are those stable? Do they provide sufficient space when grilling? I don't have them because I have the wooden table but think of it like this......you need something to set shit on. What not take the price of the grill mates and then deduct that from the price of the wooden table. You need to buy one or the other any way. Not sure if I just made sense there.

- Do I really need a $30 charcoal cleaning tool? Can't I get any kind of similar tool at Target for much less? Nope. You do not. I can show you about cleaning that shit via video. My way is perfect. No tools.

- What other accessories for the egg do you like? I'm thinking I'll just get the basics at first, but I want to plan for down the line. All you really need is a plate setter for chicken and other indirect cooking. And you need an electric iron. Like this one. Trust me. http://images.outdoorpros.com/images/prod/6/Onward-Grill-Pro-33677-rw-66849-85763.jpg

- Has anyone had an experience or heard anything negative or positive about other ceramic grills on the market like the Grill Dome, Primo or Kamado King? Look. All you need is a ceramic grill in the shape of an egg. Brand really doesn't matter here. This kind of cooking dates back to Japan in the 1300's (I mean ceramic egg cooking specifically) BGE is only a brand. I only bought the brand because they back their shit up HARD and I want to go to Eggtoberfest soon and bring my egg. You can get a knock off and be just fine as long as it is a ceramic egg.

Need anything else? Get my email from jack if you like.

ALSO - keep in mind that you will have this grill the rest of your life as long as you don't break it. Pass it down to your kids.

Yeah, it's pretty easy taking off a couple parts and cleaning it right but it doesn't need cleaning that often. It hardly makes any ash at all, especially compared to regular charcoal.

Get the tool :0074
