Have you guys needed to replace your gasket?

I'm reading the egghead forum (still) and people are complaining that they are having to replace the gasket within a week of use. I have had my egg 4 years, maybe 5 and it still doesn't need to be replaced.

My step-dad had to replace his, but it was his fault.

He was attempting to clean his plate setter by flipping it upside down and letting the flame roar.

The plate setter redirected the flame and burnt up the gasket.

I messed mine up a little when pulling an extremely hot grate out and letting it sit on the gasket. There are great sear marks on my gasket now...

Also read another method for searing steaks that I am going to try this coming week.

Let the coal get that full red burn going on and just throw your steaks right on the coals for 60 seconds each side.

I used to do this on my regular charcoal grill. Learned that trick from Alton Brown on Good Eats when he was making fajitas! :)

Joker turned me on to the electric starters. Holy shit, what a huge break in time and money saver.

Helpful to know about these. I just googled them and it seems like a time saver. I have had the large since 2006 or 2007 and it is absolutely great. Steaks are so so good on it. Cooked a five pound Salmon on it the other day and that was great too, I don't even like Salmon. However, the egg is a great smoker and it makes your food taste great. I always love entertaining with my egg.

Jack/Joker - how does the electric starter save you money?

Also, don't skimp on your charcoal! It makes a huge difference.

The electric starter does save money if you're buying the starter chips. But mostly it isn't about money here. Plug it in and you got a raging fire in minutes. Also, you're right about charcoal. Don't skimp.

Had to get a new plate setter too. I used to pick it up and out of the fire and take it over and drop it on the lawn.

What thermometer(s) do you guys use?

I use a straight pin meat thermometer. NEVER EVER buy a digital that had a wire between the readout and the pin. They will get destroyed by the eggs intense heat. If you must go digital, get one with a pin directly attached to the readout.

Had mine for years - never replaced the gasket. What are these people doing that they need to replace it every week? Fucktards.

I use the one with the wire

No intense heat on a long cook and that's the only time I use it.

And I use a regular one for checking things like chicken.

I'm surprised you don't have one that sends the temp to your phone. :0003

Joker and others that have a table stand for their Egg, what do you think of this table?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Table-for-L...ultDomain_0&hash=item3cc5175602#ht_500wt_1205
Seems like a good deal and the free shipping doesn't hurt either. Only thing is, it says it comes "without finish applied" which I guess doesn't really matter because (A) it doesn't look like the one in the picture is finished and (B) I can finish it myself and choose my color.
Think I can do better than $475

Nevermind, I just found a better table for cheaper :mj07:
This one has an extra little fold up table on the side, which I like.
I need to keep searching before asking questions though.

Gonna go buy my Egg this week :00hour

Correct........however if you wrap the cable portion that will be inside the egg with foil far enough to get it outside the egg....you'll never have a problem with burning it out again.

For liting the egg this stuff works great and is cheap...use no more than a thumbs width...Wally carries it

Oh boy, I'm over the moon right now! Got my XL Egg on pre-order and got a sick deal :00hour
Put a deposit in the mail today for what they call a "once baked Egg." Basically, it's a demo Egg from the SoCal Egg Fest that they use once and sell to people who reserve them in advance. So the deal is, I get all this for $1000:
XL Big Green Egg
Stainless Steel Cooking Grates
Locking Casters
Big Green Egg
EGG Nest (Stand)
External temperature gauge
Dual function metal top
stainless steel mesh draft door
DVD
Manual

When I found this and figured I was going to pay more for a Large Egg with the nest, I realized it was a no brainer. I went from deciding between a medium and a large to now getting an XL. What's the saying, "Go big or go home" right? Guess if I'm gonna do this I'm gonna go all out. So it's one more month till I get to pick up my Egg on May 19th. Oh and to boot, they are throwing in 2 free tickets to the Egg Fest. :00hour
Can't wait for my Egg! :00hour :00hour

Calling Joker, Jack and allother Eggheads:

Do any of you use an electronic temp control like the DigiQ DX with the little fan in the bottom vent? I'm looking into getting one of these and was curious if you guys had any useful opinions, thoughts or reviews? Seems ideal for when you need to slow cook something for 8+ hrs and want to leave it without worrying about it.

How much tinkering do you really have to do with the Egg when you are doing a slow cook? How often should you have to tend to it?

Also, how important/necessary/useful is a cast iron grate for the Egg? I've got a nice big cast iron pan with the grill lines on it (like the one below), but would a grate make any difference? Damn things are expensive and all the cheaper ones online are pointless to buy because the shipping is pricey too.

Seems ideal for when you need to slow cook something for 8+ hrs and want to leave it without worrying about it. I suppose if I smoked more than 25 times a year, I would get one. I only slow cook/smoke 4 times a year. Every other time I fire up the grill, I am cooking steak, hamburgers, hotdogs and even pizza.

How much tinkering do you really have to do with the Egg when you are doing a slow cook? How often should you have to tend to it? Look at it every hour. I will only smoke something during NFL season. I drink beer, watch football and smoke a brisket, pork shoulder etc....during commercials, I walk out back and check on it.

Also, how important/necessary/useful is a cast iron grate for the Egg? I have never thought that I would even need one. Ever. Not sure why I would need one at all.

Going to post a video recipe and a cleaning video very soon.
