I've been an avid baseball card collector for damn near my entire life. I figured I would grow out of it, but I still find myself buying packs every now and then.

With 7 games left, it appears that Mr. Bonds will break the HR record that Mcquire set 2 years ago. A buddy of mine who still collects as well, turned me on an unbelievable website. At www.overstock.com they have an enormous amount of disounted merchandise that they're offering to sell at incredible low prices.

They have about 4-6 different Barry Bond's rookie cards. You can bet your ass that these will probably double or triple in value if he breaks the homerun record. Already, they have gone up quite a bit. The best part is the fact that they're offering these rookie cards at nearly 70% off the high end of the Beckett pricing guide. I already had a couple of Bond's rookie cards, but I didn't have his Topps card. Well, I purchased it for LESS THAN $40 BUCKS(and yes, they are the REAL thing}.

I'd suggest going over there and gettin' your hands on a few. If he does break it, I bet ya they'll sell every damn one of them in a matter of days...

Those Jordan rooks are about $2400/piece. It might be a little difficult to find someone who would pay that, but I'd say it safe to say that you could unload both of 'em for around $3,000. Regarding George, I really don't know since I don't subscribe to the Football Becket. I've got a few football cards back in the days of Bradshaw, Stauback, Dorsett, Hannah, MEAN-Joe, Waters, Rand White, Pearson, Swann, etc...etc...

I'd say however, if ya could get $5 bucks for all five of 'em, then I'd take it and run...

BIG baseball card collector as a kid as well, still into it a bit. Turned me off in the 80's when you went from 2 or 3 card manufacturers to dozens...
Bought all of Bonds' rookie cards 5-6 years ago for a dollar or two a piece. Also got for a buck or two at that time. All rookie cards--

Maddux-- both the traded and regular(check out his totally cheesy 'stache)
Randy Johnson
Barry Larkin

...and some others I can't think of right now. I probably have somewhere in the neighborhood of 100,000 cards total. Whole Topps sets from 1970-1987 and a few cards from the 60s and 90s.

Anybody else have a wife who threatens to throw your cards out everytime she goes into the unused room in your basement?

What's Ripken Jr's Topps Future All-Stars card worth these days? I've got 5 of them. I don't have them graded, but 4 of them are in great shape and one is in good shape.

Just wondering. I haven't looked at anything like that in a while. I did see the PGA trading cards when I went to the Championship this year, though.

What IF Barry doesn't break the record? Is it still worth it??

Anyways, I've collected cards all my life too, and I got a half a case full of 87 "Unopened" Fleer and Donruss wax boxes, boy, am I glad I kept them in tact, look like the investment is paying off!! They were only 18 dolars an entire box back then!! I just wish I kept those Fleer basketball wax packs unopened too(the one with the Jordan Rookies inside), but being a kid, I liked eating the gum so I opened them packs back then. They were only 35 cents a pack!!!! Can you believe that!! and you could find atleast 3 or more Jordans in each box too!!! I just liked bball, I had NOO idea it would worth any money. I remember I bought a JOrdan Rookie at the card shop back then for ONLY 50 cents!!!! I even asked myself before I bought it, "Is this card worth 50 cents??" I'm sure as hell glad I had 52 cents in my pocket to buy that card. I still remember that moment of taking that Jordan rookie in the plastic sleeve out of the cheap bball card box and seeing the 50 cent price sticker on top...aaahhh, brings back memories!!! There are a ton more stuff back then that were sooooo cheap!!!! U guys would flip if I told ya all my sportscard experiences!!!! I also used to mail order minor league sets. I got Cal Ripkens Rochester minor league set for less than 20 dolars back then. Who knows how much it's worth today!! I got Clemens RARE 84 fleer traded card for less than 10.00!!! The 84 Fleer traded was so rare even back then, it would be extreeeemmeely hard to find it today. You could have gotten the Ken Griffey Bellingham minor league sets for only 8 bucks back then too!!! I remember looking at them and saying to myself "That's too expensive!!!!" Being a kid, 8 bucks is a lot of money for a baseball player not proven yet, but damn, who knew Griffey would be this good, I bet it's worth over 100 times that price today!!!! My grandpa used to tell me bread used to be only 10 cents back then......now I know how he feels like!!! Whoever collected cards back then most likely know what I'm talking about. If any of you guys want to share some baseball card stories, I got a ton of them!!!

I got pretty much lots of duplicates of every rookie card of the great players that came up in the 80's in baseball, basketball, and football. But I stop collecting in late 89, early 1990, when tons of different companies and subsets and promos started over saturating the market, turning the hobby of collecting into more of a business. If ya guys check Ebay under barry bonds, his PSA 10 rookie cards are auctioning off in the $100's, some in the 1000's!!

i remember when mcguire broke the record, his olympic card was selling for over $300 on eBay. now, you'd be lucky to get $50. thanks for bringing this topic up. if bonds breaks the record, i'm goin diggin in the back room for all his cards and unloading them on eBay. i have so much stuff back there it's ridiculous. what a chore that'll be.

I bet it beats the chore of mowing the lawn when you were a kid, and is probably a bit more profitable as well...........I used to own a baseball card shop in late 80's and got out of it when 300 companies came out with cards and a lot of them at 15.00 a pack.........abut my big claim to fame was that I bought 600 Upper Deck Griffey rookies at 8.00 a piece because he had just fallen in the shower after a game and broke his ankle........I've only got 9 left, but I sure made a few dollars along the way. That's when it used to be fun........I am still working on a '71 and '72 set, if anybody out there has any of these in real nice shape let me know......Ahhhh the good 'ole days.

I collected alot as a kid, but stopped like alot of you when the market expanded from Topps, Donruss & Fleer. I remember getting so pissed off at all of these 'new' cards and thinking that the market was getting so flooded with cards.

I remember going to a card store in 1996 and seeing two NBA cards in particular that caught my attention. At the time I had never heard of Topps 'chrome', but I thought they looked pretty cool so I gave 'em a look. One was going for $3.00 at the time and the other was going for $6.00. I hadn't been collecting for a while so I didn't really know what was valuable at the time. I remember recognizing the player on the $3.00 card and thinking "yea, he's pretty good. I think this card will be worth something one day." I looked at the $6.00 card and thought "don't really know who this is, so I'm not dropping $6.00 bucks on some rookie I don't know. I bought the $3.00 card and put the $6.00 card back. I actually thought about buying them both, but I was too cheap and didn't do it.

The $3.00 card= Mr. Allen Iverson
Still have the card...PSA 9

The $6.00 card I was too cheap to buy=Mr. Kobe Bryant...I guess that's what I get for being a tightwad,

On a side note...

I had tons of great rookie cards from the 70's and 80's that 'somehow' ended up in my older brother's possession. He always said the same thing when I told him those were my cards.."nah, we traded for that one, don't you remember."

I collected cards for most of my youth as well, lasted until the mid 90's when everything became a business rather than a hobby. I sold off most of my collection with some exceptions:

Every regular issue Topps Nolan Ryan from 69-94. Many Ripkens and McGwires. Also have an autographed Don Mattingly minor League card, too bad he couldn't last a few more years.

The one thing I am looking for, if anyone can help, is a 1981 TCMA Rochester Redwings (AAA of Orioles) Cal Ripken Jr. Saw it at a show several years ago for $100 and passed

TAZ,...

I'm guessin' you got Ryan's 1984 Ralston Purina Co. 1st Annual Collector's edition card? I've got about 5-6 of 'em but have no idea where I got them. I'm thinking I must've gotten them out of some cereal boxes or sumthin'. Oops, just noticed on the back it says "Collect all 33 baseball cards by purchasing specially marked packages of Cookie Crisp, donkey kong, and other Ralston cereals. I figured they might be worth sumthin' so I decided to look them up in the most recent Beckett. For the life of me, I couldn't find the friggin' card! I searched everywhere and finally just gave up. If anyone can help me out here, I'd sure appreciate it!!

Also, I can't tell you how many damn Shaquille O'Neal rookie cards I have. It's probably around 150-200 all rookies! Every card co. you can imagine; UpperDeck, Fleer, Score, Classics, Topps, etc..etc.. I remember checking the prices on all his cards nearly 3 yrs. ago, and they weren't worth CHIT! But, after the championship run he's had with the Lakers, they have really really increased in value.

Does anyone know the current situation with card collecting? I was wondering if there were still hundreds of companies still printing cards? Personally, I'm a fan of the old ones mid 80's on back. A few yrs. back I remember purchasing one of those extra long NBA rookie cards of Bill Bradley. I figured if that SOB became President of the United States......ZOOOOM

Neemer,

There are still tons of companies producing cards. Just pick up a Beckett and look at all of the different companies, its ridiculous.

You've gotta love the Lakers success with all of those Shaq cards. Not too long ago his cards weren't worth the cardboard they were printed on, now they're pretty hot.

It amazes me that with the way cards are now, you can get a rookie card (NBA for example) that's valued at MORE than say an older rookie card of someone who's accomplished alot (Walter Payton for example). I remember a couple of years ago one of Steve Francis' rookie cards was going for $500. That's crazy.

Neemer,
I don't have the Ralston Purina card, but I used to. In the mid 80's there were many of these "one-off" sets. Kmart, KayBee toys, Ralston Purina, Rite Aid, etc. You will not find prices in the monthly beckett, no room
rolleyes.gif
You would have to get the annual bound edition which has all sets or it may be on their website. My guess it is worth a couple of bucks at bets.

As for the card industry you just have to go to a show to see it. 10 years ago it was just baseball, sets, commons, etc. Now a card show has all major sports (which I think is great) as well as beany babies and such. Also the sets and commons and many old cards are gone, replaced by over priced over valued insert cards. Many kids today open a pack of cards looking for an insert, throwing out the others
