Utah State rips UNT in NM Bowl
December 15, 2018
By The Associated Press

LAS VEGAS (AP) Ronnie Rivers rushed for 212 yards and two touchdowns, Anthoula ''Tank'' Kelly had a 70-yard interception return for a touchdown and No. 19 Fresno State beat Arizona State 31-20 in the Las Vegas Bowl on Saturday.

Marcus McMaryion rushed for a touchdown and was 15-of-29 passing for 176 yards to help the Bulldogs (12-2) set a school record for wins in a season. He also threw two interceptions.

Eno Benjamin rushed for 118 yards a one touchdown for the Sun Devils (7-6) in their third straight bowl loss. Manny Wilkins threw for 129 yards, with a 3-yard scoring pass to Kyle Williams and two interceptions.

Rivers put Fresno State back in front 24-20 with a 68-yard touchdown run up the middle in the third quarter and had a 5-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter to seal Fresno State's second win over a Pac-12 opponent this season.

Wilkins sustained an apparent knee injury on the final pass of his college career, which was intercepted by Juju Hughes.

NEW MEXICO BOWL

UTAH STATE 52, NORTH TEXAS 13

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Jordan Love threw for 359 yards and four touchdowns and Jalen Greene had six catches for 151 yards and a score to help Utah State rout North Texas in the New Mexico Bowl.

Interim coach Frank Maile directed the Aggies (11-2) after Matt Wells left to take the Texas Tech job.

Love completed 21 of 43 passes with one interception. D.J. William had two interceptions, helping Utah State ground high-flying North Texas (9-4).

Aaren Vaughns caught two passes for 109 yards and two scores for the Aggies, Gerold Bright ran for 103 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries, and Darwin Thompson added 93 yards on 21 carries.

North Texas quarterback Mason Fine was injured in the first quarter, and the Mean Green ended up using four quarterbacks. Jalen Guyton had four catches for 103 yards a score.

CURE BOWL

TULANE 41, LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE 24

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Darius Bradwell rushed for a career-best 150 yards and two touchdowns to lead Tulane to its first postseason victory in 16 years, a 41-24 win over intrastate rival Louisiana-Lafayette in the Cure Bowl.

Justin McMillan improved to 5-1 as the Green Wave's starting quarterback, tossing a first-quarter TD pass to Terren Encalade and running for a late score while accounting for 217 yards total offense - 145 passing and 72 rushing.

Bradwell scored on runs of 15 and 4 yards while setting bowl records for rushing attempts (35) and yards for Tulane (7-6), which won a bowl game for the first time since the 2002 Hawaii Bowl.

The Green Wave also got a rushing TD from Amare Jones and outgained the Ragin' Cajuns 337 yards to 84 on the ground.

Lousiana-Lafayette (7-7) rallied from a 24-7 deficit to pull within three points on Jarrod Jackson's 15-yard TD reception with just over 10 minutes remaining.

McMillan put the game away, leading a 75-yard drive Bradwell finished with his second TD and later scoring himself on a 16-yard run that put Tulane up 41-24.

CAMELLIA BOWL

GEORGIA SOUTHERN 23, EASTERN MICHIGAN 21

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Tyler Bass kicked a 40-yard field goal as time expired to lift Georgia Southern past Eastern Michigan in the Camellia Bowl.

Shai Werts kept the winning drive alive with a 29-yard scramble on fourth-and-10. Bass came on for his third field goal after Wesley Fields' two runs pushed Georgia Southern (10-3) 7 yards closer.

Bass also made a 50-yarder on the final play of the first half.

Eastern Michigan (7-6) had delivered its own big fourth-down play to take the lead for the first time.

Mike Glass threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Arthur Jackson with 3:33 left on fourth-and-4, followed by Chad Ryland's extra point.

Georgia Southern took over at its own 25 with a triple-option offense that attempted fewer passes than every FBS team but Army. Werts completed a 15-yard pass to tight end Ellis Richardson, but Georgia Southern fittingly covered most of the 52 yards with runs.

NEW ORLEANS BOWL

APPALACHIAN STATE 45, MIDDLE TENNESSEE 13

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Appalachian State receiver Malik Williams passed for two touchdowns on trick plays, quarterback Zac Thomas caught a scoring pass and threw for three more, and the Mountaineers routed Middle Tennessee in the New Orleans Bowl.

Camerun Peoples had a 63-yard touchdown run for the Mountaineers (11-2), which gave Appalachian State alum and former player Mark Ivey a victory in what might have been his only chance to coach his alma mater. Ivey took over on an interim basis after Scott Satterfield left for Louisville.

Middle Tennessee finished 8-6.

CELEBRATION BOWL

NORTH CAROLINA A&T 24, ALCORN STATE 22

ATLANTA (AP) - Lamar Raynard passed for 292 yards and two touchdowns and Malik Wilson returned a kickoff for the game-sealing touchdown for North Carolina A&T in the Celebration Bowl.

The Mid-Eastern Athletic conference champion Aggies (10-2) won ther second straight HBCU national championship and third in four years. Alcorn State finished 9-4.

Sunday?s Den: Wrapping up a sports Saturday??.

Noon-2pm:
? Kansas 74, Villanova 71? Villanova?s bench (3 guys) scored zero points, was 0-4 from floor in 29 combined minutes. Wildcats were 8-28 on the arc, still hung tough but fell short.
? Tennessee 102, Memphis 92? Vols were 39-46 on foul line, Memphis 16-22.
? SMU 81, Georgetown 73? Patrick Ewing in his 2nd year as the Hoyas? coach; they lost seven of last nine games LY, finished 15-15. Georgetown is 7-3 now, vs schedule #255- this loss ain?t going to look good on Selection Sunday. Coach Ewing needs a big guy like Ewing the player.
? Tulane 41, Louisiana 24- First bowl of the season is the Cure Bowl in Orlando. Shouldn?t these teams be playing in Shreveport or New Orleans? Green Wave banks its first bowl win since 2002; good win for the AAC.

2pm-4pm:
? Notre Dame 88, Purdue 80? Boilermakers lost for fifth time in last seven games.
? Seton Hall 72, Rutgers 66? Underrated rivalry from the Garden State. Rutgers lost its 4th game in a row; they were outscored 21-10 on foul line.
? Utah State 52, North Texas 13? Utah State plays New Mexico every year, every other year in this stadium; Aggies lost their coach to Texas Tech, sometimes teams like that don?t react well in this situation, but Utah State led 38-7 at halftime in a commanding performance, showing that they really did deserve to be in a better bowl.

4pm-6pm:
? Indiana 71, Butler 68? Hoosiers were holding ball for last shot and kind of screwed things up, so kid jacks a 35-footer at the buzzer and drains it. Not the play anyone drew up, but it was a game-winner. Exciting ballgame.
? Kentucky 88, Utah 61? Pac-12 is really struggling so far this season.
? Belmont 74, UCLA 72? UCLA went 9-24 on foul line in second half.
? Texans 29, Jets 22? Houston scored 10 points in last 2:15 of game

6pm-8pm:
? Arizona State 76, Georgia 74? Sun Devils were down 47-33 at halftime.
? North Carolina 103. Gonzaga 90? Probably Zags? last loss until March.
? Fresno State 31, Arizona State 20? Herm Edwards finishes his first year at ASU 7-6. I went to Las Vegas Bowl few years ago and damn near froze my butt off; had to move around stadium and stay in sun. Didn?t dress warm enough.
? Georgia Southern 23, Eastern Michigan 21? Georgia Southern ran ball for 331 yards.

8pm-10pm:
? If you like college basketball, I recommend you get ESPN+; its only $5 a month, and you get ton of games in mid-major and low-major leagues, so that is fun. I have it and will cancel it as soon as basketball season is over, then get it again next winter.
? Mississippi State 70, Cincinnati 59? 9-1 Bulldogs made 12-23 on arc; Cincy was 3-14.
? Oklahoma 81, USC 70? Trojans shot 34.8% from floor, turned ball over 18 times.
? Browns 17, Broncos 16? Cleveland has won four of its last five games. If you want to be an NFL head coach, I?m guessing John Elway will be accepting applications soon.

10pm-midnight:
? Appalachian State 45, Middle Tennessee State 13? How would you like to be the coach in charge of bed checks at the New Orleans Bowl? Good luck there.
? UNLV 92, BYU 90 OT? Rebels blew a 17-point halftime lead, needed a 3-pointer at buzzer in OT to pull out this win at T-Mobile Arena.
? Thunder 110, Clippers 104? Clippers lost five of their last six games.
? Carson Wentz (back) is definitely out for the Eagles? game in LA Sunday night.

Elsewhere??
6) Upsets of the Day:
? Oral Roberts (+11) 59, Richmond 52
? Old Dominion (+10.5) 68, Syracuse 62
? Belmont (+7.5) 74, UCLA 72
? Charleston (+7) 83, VCU 79
? Mississippi State (+5) 70, Cincinnati 59
? Notre Dame (+4.5) 88, Purdue 80
? SMU (+4.5) 81, Georgetown 73

5) Boston Red Sox went $40M over the tax threshold, so they owe $11,951,091 in luxury tax for going so far over the limit. Only other team that owes money is the Washington Nationals, who didn?t make the playoffs last year, but still owe $2,386,097, Whoops.

If you have to pay a luxury tax and still miss the playoffs, either the GM or manager (or both) should be fired, right? Somebody screwed up.

Boston?s top draft pick in June?s amateur draft also got dropped ten spots as a penalty.

4) This was the first time in 16 years the Bronx Bombers finished under the tax threshold; seeing the Red Sox lift the World Series trophy this past October will probably spur Bronx to spend ridiculous amounts of money this coming season.

3) Providence freshman guard AJ Reeves, the Friars? 2nd-leading scorer, will miss four to six weeks because of a foot injury.

2) Former ESPN guy Charlie Steiner signed a 3-year extension to continue as the Dodgers? radio voice. Do yourself a favor, go to YouTube and look up ?Charlie Steiner outtakes? when he gets laughing and can?t stop several times while doing SportsCenter. Good stuff.

1) The line in my neighborhood deli was out the door at noontime Saturday, so good for them, its a terrific place (Pellegrino?s on Central Ave) but I?m not a fan of waiting on line, so had to go elsewhere for lunch. Too bad, they have terrific subs.

Boca Raton Bowl Preview
December 15, 2018
By Joe Williams

**Northern Illinois vs. UAB**

Boca Raton Bowl History

-- The champions of the Mid-American Conference (MAC), the Northern Illinois Huskies (8-5 straight up, 7-6 against the spread) meet the champions of Conference USA, the Alabama-Birmingham Blazers (10-3 straight up, 9-4 against the spread) in the fifth all-time installment of the Cheribundi Tart Cherry Boca Raton Bowl. The Boca Bowl is just one of three bowl games to feature two outright conference champions.

-- The Huskies played in the inaugural Boca Bowl game back on Dec. 23, 2014, falling 52-23 to Marshall in front of 29,419 fans. They'll be looking to snap a five-game bowl losing skid since their last victory in the postseason back in 2011 when they pushed aside Arkansas State in the GoDaddy.com Bowl. The Huskies have managed a 4-8 SU mark in 12 all-time bowl games.

-- The Blazers have rebounded rather nicely after killing their football program after the 2014 season. The program was resurrected in 2017, and they have been bowl eligible in each of the past two seasons under Bill Clark. UAB was waxed by Ohio U in the Bahamas Bowl last season, 41-6, and they're 0-2 SU/ATS in two all-time bowl appearances.

-- NIU opened the season taking it on the chin in each of their first two games, losing at Iowa and at home against Utah in a soaking rain. They also faced a Power 5 Conference team at Florida State, falling Sept. 22 in Tallahassee by a 37-19 score. After opening 1-3 SU/ATS, they entered conference play with a bang. The Huskies won six straight games in MAC play, starting with an overtime win at Eastern Michigan, also a bowl team, back on Sept. 29. They went 5-1 ATS during the impressive span to get bowl eligible. They had a hiccup against Miami-Ohio at home on Nov. 14 and at Western Michigan on Nov. 21, but they had still done enough to get into the MAC title game. They rallied to top a 10-win Buffalo team in the championship game.

-- UAB fired out of the chute with eight wins in their first nine games, including an impressive 8-1 ATS durng the span. The only stumble was a 47-24 loss at Coastal Carolina on Sept. 8. It was defense which really helped the Blazers this season, as they pitched three shutouts, while allowing seven or fewer points in six of their 13 contests. They were outclassed 41-20 at Texas A&M on Nov. 17, while slipping up 27-3 at Middle Tennessee on Nov. 24. However, in a rematch with the Blue Raiders in the C-USA title game in Murfreesboro they pushed aside Middle Tennessee 27-25 to win their first-ever conference championship.

-- NIU really struggled offensively this season, ranking 123rd in the nation in total yardage (325.0 yards per game) while checking in just 120th in the pass department with 153.5 yards per contest. Their bread is buttered in the run game, putting up 171.5 yards per contest to rank 61st in the nation. The Huskies rank 31st in the nation with 347.8 yards per game allowed, and they're especially hard on the opponent's road game, allowing just 109.7 yards per game to rank 14th. They also allowed just 21.5 PPG to finish 26th in the country.

-- UAB also wasn't terribly impressive on the road, posting 400.4 yards per game to finish 67th in the nation. They posted 191.5 yards per game through the air to finish 100th in the FBS, and they also like to run the football more. The Blazers posted 208.9 yards per game on the ground to rank 29th overall. On defense, UAB ranked 11th in the land with just 300.2 yards per game allowed, and they were 16th in passing yards allowed (181.2), 20th in rushing yards allowed (119.0) and 10th in points allowed (17.3 PPG).

-- QB Marcus Childers was so-so under center, passing for 1,996 yards with 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while running for 496 yards and six scores. RB Tre Harbison ran for 985 yards and four touchdowns, and Marcus Johnson was a nice change-of-pace back with 523 yards and four scores. In the pass game, the trio of WRs Jauan Wesley (49-585-2), D.J. Brown (55-484-5) and Spencer Tears (34-372-4) are the ones to watch.

-- When UAB has the ball, RB Spener Brown is the one to watch. He ran 248 times for 1,152 yards (4.6 yards per game) with 16 touchdowns. QB A.J. Erdely (shoulder) is questionable for Tuesday's game. He threw for 1,539 yards with seven touchdowns and seven interceptions while rushing for 257 yards and five scores. If he cannot go it will be QB Tyler Johnston III, who filled in with 950 yards, seven touchdows and four rushing scores. Both are likely to play even if Erdely is active.

-- UAB enters this bowl 8-3 ATS over the past 11 games overall, and they're also 8-3 ATS in the past 11 against winning teams. They have failed to cover their past four outings on a grass surface, however.

-- NIU heads in with an 0-5 ATS mark over the past five bowl appearances, and they're 1-5 ATS in the past six against the Conference USA. They're also just 5-16-1 ATS in the past 22 neutral-site battles, and 5-13 ATS in the past 18 on a grass surface. However, they have covered in four of the past five against winning teams.

-- The over is 4-1 in UAB's past five overall, and 8-3 in their past 11 on a grass surface. The under is 7-2 in their past nine against winning teams, however.

-- The under is 9-4 in UAB's past 13 overall, and 7-3 ATS in the past 10 non-conference tilts. However, the over is 5-2 in the past seven neutral-site battles while hitting in four of their past five played in the month of December.

-- Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

UAB's Johnston, Ubosi torch N. Illinois in Boca Raton Bowl
December 18, 2018
ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) Two seasons after shutting down its football program, UAB closed out the year on an electrifying note.

Tyler Johnston III threw for 373 yards and four touchdowns, three of them to Xavier Ubosi, and UAB beat Northern Illinois 37-13 in the Boca Raton Bowl on Tuesday night.

Ubosi had seven catches for 227 yards for the Conference USA champion Blazers (11-3), who got their first-ever bowl victory in three appearances. UAB played in its second consecutive bowl since the program was reinstated after the self-imposed hiatus.

''I guess in our wildest dreams we dreamed of winning a conference championship and then cap it off with a bowl win, so it's really that sweet,'' UAB coach Bill Clark said. ''I don't think it could have gone any better for us, so I'm very proud.''

Northern Illinois (8-6), the Mid-American Conference champion, has lost six consecutive bowl games since beating Arkansas in the 2012 GoDaddy.com Bowl.

''It really comes down to three things. We gave up three touchdowns on three deep balls,'' NIU coach Rod Carey said. ''Old-fashioned go routes. Give those guys credit. They ran by us. They threw it, caught it. That's the difference. If not, it's 16-13. In the fourth quarter, I like our chances.

''We have to own it as coaches. We have to own it as players. We didn't coach good enough. We didn't play good enough. Thirteen points isn't winning football. Bummer.''

Johnston, who took over the starting job for the injured A.J. Erdely at midseason, set career highs in passing yards and touchdown passes, and Ubosi's 227 yards were the third-most receiving in a game in school history. Ubosi came into the game ranked second in the country at 21.8 yards per catch, and his TD receptions covered 70, 46 and 66 yards.

''I'm surprised but at the same time you work for it,'' Ubosi said. ''Just practice hard and whatever you do in practice you'll do in the game.''

All-American Spencer Brown, who entered with 1,167 rushing yards and a school-record 16 touchdowns, caught a 3-yard shovel pass for a score and had 78 yards on the ground.

UAB's 10th-ranked defense harassed Huskes quarterback Marcus Childers, sacking him five times and forcing two fumbles (one lost). He finished 22 of 29 for 179 yards and had 35 yards rushing on 18 carries. NIU led the nation with 50 sacks, but never got to Johnston.

Johnston hit Ubosi in stride for a 70-yard TD just 18 seconds after the opening kickoff.

''It made it easier for me,'' Johnston said. ''Everyone wants to score on the first play of the game. I trusted (Ubosi). He said, `Just put it in front of me and I'll go get it.'''

After a penalty on a punt gave the Blazers a fourth-and-1 opportunity that they converted, the duo connected again with 5:11 remaining in the first half for a 24-10 lead.

The Huskies cut it to 27-13 early in the third, but a little over two minutes later, Johnston found Ubosi down the sideline for his third score.

Nick Vogel kicked three field goals for UAB.

''We talk a lot about making history,'' Clark said. ''We talked about it with Tyler and Xavier and we knew we were going to make history. We wanted to finish.''

Carey said the loss shouldn't blemish the careers of his senior class.

''It's a reward for a championship team,'' Carey said. ''We want to win. Don't get me wrong. I'm not going to let the narrative be about me. You want to write I'm 0-6 in bowl games, I could take that. I'm a big boy. But that's not what it's about.''

UP NEXT

Northern Illinois will be losing 6-foot-6, 320-pound left tackle Max Scharping, an NFL prospect who has started 53 consecutive games. Scharping is finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, given annually to the best scholar-athlete in college football.

UAB will be losing 35 seniors, including 15 starters. Ubosi has played his final game for the Blazers, along with four of five starting offensive linemen, both starting safeties, their middle linebacker and nose tackle. But Johnston and Brown have just begun their collegiate careers.

Frisco Bowl Preview
December 18, 2018
By Brian Edwards

Ohio and San Diego State are poised to collide Wednesday night at Toyota Stadium for the DXL Frisco Bowl in Frisco, TX.

As of Tuesday evening, most books had Ohio (8-4 straight up, 7-5 against the spread) installed as a 2.5-point favorite with a total of 53.5. The Aztecs were +120 on the money line (risk $100 to win $120).

San Diego State (7-5 SU, 3-9 ATS) opened the season with a 31-10 loss at Stanford, but it responded with six straight wins. The Aztecs won vs. Arizona State (28-21), vs. Eastern Michigan (23-20 in overtime) and at Boise State (19-13) during their six-game surge.

However, Rocky Long?s club lost three games in a row and four of its last five to close the regular season in extremely disappointing fashion. The Aztecs have been particularly tough on their betting supporters lately, going 1-6 ATS in their past seven games with the lone spread cover coming by one point.

San Diego State lost at home vs. UNLV by a 27-24 count as a 24-point home favorite. Next, it went down 23-14 at Fresno State before closing the year with a 31-30 overtime loss to Hawaii as an 18-point home ?chalk.?

Juwan Washington rushed for 158 yards and two TDs on 31 carries in the loss to the Warriors. Senior QB Christian Chapman completed only 9-of-19 throws for 149 yards and one TD without an interception. Senior WR Fred Trevillion had a pair of receptions for 88 yards and one TD.

San Diego State led Hawaii 14-3 at the end of the first quarter, only to see the Warriors outscore it 21-0 in the second to take a 24-14 advantage into halftime. The Aztecs held Cole McDonald and Co. scoreless in the second half so when they scored on a 13-yard TD pass from Ryan Agnew to Isaac Lessard with 6:07 remaining, the game was tied at 24-24.

Hawaii had possession first in the extra session, getting a 10-yard TD pass from McDonald to JoJo Ward to go ahead 31-24. San Diego State quickly answered on Washington?s 25-yard TD dash, but Long decided to go for two and the win. The move backfired when a two-point conversion pass failed. We could see both Agnew and Chapman under center Wednesday. Chapman started 29 games in his first three seasons, but a shoulder injury in Week 2 forced him to the sidelines for two months. He has split time with Agnew since returning in a 31-23 win at New Mexico on Nov. 3.

Chapman has connected on 57.5 percent of his throws for 774 yards this year. He has a 4/1 touchdown-to-interception ratio. For his career, Chapman has an excellent 39/12 TD-INT ratio. Agnew, a junior who played high school at Southake Carroll in the Dallas area, had only nine career pass attempts coming into the season. He completed 104-of-199 passes (52.3%) for 1,525 yards with a 10/5 TD-INT ratio. Agnew also produced 131 rushing yards, but he was limited to 2.4 yards per carry.

Washington missed four games in a row after sustaining an injury in the win over EMU. Like Chapman, he returned for the win at UNM, rushing for 95 yards and two TDs on merely 11 carries. For the season, Washington has produced 870 rushing yards, 10 TDs and a 4.8 YPC average. Sophomore RB Chase Jasmin has run for 592 yards and five TDs with a 4.3 YPC average.

Trevillion has 22 receptions for 598 yards and three TDs. The senior wideout averages 27.2 yards per catch. Kahale Warring has 31 grabs for 372 yards and three TDs.

San Diego State is ranked 21st in the nation in total defense, third in run defense and 29th in scoring ?D? (21.8 points per game). Junior LB Kyahva Tezino has enjoyed a sensational season, racking up 120 tackles, 8.5 sacks, seven QB hurries, six tackles for loss and two passes broken up.

San Diego State has been an underdog four times this season, compiling a 3-1 spread record with a pair of outright victories. Since midway through the 2015 campaign, Long?s team is an incredible 9-1 ATS with eight outright wins in 10 games as an underdog.

This is the Aztecs? ninth consecutive postseason appearance, but they?ll fail in their bid to post a fourth straight double-digit win total. They went 11-3, 11-3 and 10-3 in 2015, ?16 and ?17, respectively.

Long has taken his program to the postseason eight times during his eight-year tenure. The Aztecs are 3-4 SU in those seven previous bowl games. They won back-to-back seasons over Cincinnati (42-7) at the 2015 Hawaii Bowl and 34-10 over Houston at the 2016 Las Vegas Bowl. But San Diego State was denied a third straight postseason victory by Army at the 2017 Armed Forces Bowl (42-35).

Frank Solich?s team went 2-2 both SU and ATS in non-conference play. Ohio beat Howard (38-32) and UMass (58-42) at home, but it lost 45-31 to Virginia in Nashville and 34-30 at Cincinnati.

The Bobcats went 4-1 in its first five MAC games to leave them in a three-way race with Buffalo and Miami (OH) in the East Division. However, the RedHawks captured a 30-28 win as 4.5-point home ?chalk? when Ohio came to town. Solich?s bunch would bounce back to trash Buffalo by a 52-17 count as a 2.5-point home favorite the following week. Nevertheless, the Bulls finished 7-1 in league play to win the division.

Ohio is led by junior QB Nathan Rourke, who has completed 61.3 percent of his passes for 2,225 yards with a 22/7 TD-INT ratio. Rourke can make plays with his legs, too, rushing for 816 yards and 13 TDs while averaging 6.5 YPC. His favorite target is Papi White, who has 58 catches for 897 yards and nine TDs. Andrew Meyer has 34 receptions for 445 yards and four TDs.

Senior RB A.J Ouellette has run for 1,142 yards and 12 TDs with a 6.2 YPC average. Malek Irons is a force as well, rushing for 831 yards and eight TDs while averaging 6.6 YPC.

Ohio was a single-digit favorite three times, going 2-1 both SU and ATS. The Bobcats are bowling for the fourth straight season and are hoping to perform the way they did last year at the 2017 Bahamas Bowl, where they blasted UAB 41-6 as seven-point favorites to end a three-game losing streak in the postseason. During Solich?s 14-year tenure, Ohio has gone 3-6 in nine bowl games.

Ohio is ranked 17th in the nation in total offense, ninth in rushing yards and 10th in scoring with its 41.2 points-per-game average. The Bobcats are 35th in the country in run defense, 66th in total defense and 61st in scoring ?D? (26.7 PPG).

The ?over? is 7-4-1 overall for the Bobcats after hitting in their last two regular-season games. They?ve seen their games average combined scores of 67.8 PPG. This is the second-lowest total of the season for Ohio, which saw the 45 combined points drop ?under? the 52-point tally at No. Illinois back on Oct. 13.

The ?under? is 8-4 overall for the Aztecs, but they saw the ?over? go 3-2 in their last five regular-season contests. They?ve seen their games average combined scores of 44.1 PPG. This is San Diego State third-highest total of the year.

Kickoff on ESPN is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Eastern.

**B.E.?s Bonus Nuggets**

-- San Diego State?s win total (8.5) dropped ?under,? while Ohio?s (8.5) also slithered South of the number.

-- USA Today reported early Monday night that Georgia true freshman QB Justin Fields is exploring transferring possibilities. Fields, a five-star recruit, played in 12 of UGA?s 13 games. He rushed for 266 yards and four TDs on 42 attempts, averaging 6.3 YPC. Fields completed 27-of-39 throws (69.2%) for 328 yards and four TDs without an interception. With the SEC Championship Game tied at 28-28 with about three minutes remaining, Kirby Smart inserted Fields into the game on the punt team with the Bulldogs facing a fourth-and-11 play near midfield. In a cataclysmic coaching error, Smart inexplicably called a fake punt. The snap went directly to Fields, who you would think was supposed to throw the ball. He ran instead and didn?t come anywhere close to getting first-down yardage. Whether or not Fields screwed up the play or not, all the blame lies with Smart for making the knucklehead decision. UGA starting QB Jake Fromm is a true sophomore and whether he?s a guy who turns pro early or stays in Athens for four seasons is debatable at this point. Fields apparently doesn?t want to hinge his future on finding out, and that?s understandable. He?ll be in high demand on the transfer market. At this point, it?s unclear if Fields will play in the Sugar Bowl vs. Texas. There?s been some chatter among SEC media member that Mississippi St. could be a landing spot for the talented signal caller. The thinking here is that Fields has a long relationship with Joe Moorhead, who was the OC for James Franklin at Penn St. during Fields?s recruiting process. Before deciding to sign with UGA, Fields had been verbally committed to PSU. A report from The Toledo Blade on Tuesday suggested that Ohio St. was the front-runner to score Fields?s services.

-- Nick Saban provided ESPN.com with an update on Heisman Trophy runner-up QB Tua Tagovailoa?s progress after undergoing ankle surgery a couple of weeks ago. ?He?s doing well. I think he?s probably ahead of schedule. He?s been able to take a lot of reps. He?s been able to throw the ball from the pocket. He can run?I don?t think he?s 100 percent in terms of change of direction yet. But he?s already going 100 percent on the gravity treadmill. So he?s been able to practice and he?s made really, really good progress. So we?re encouraged by that.?

-- Iowa QB Nate Stanley will return to the Hawkeyes for his senior season in 2019. Stanley, who announced his decision on Monday, threw for 2,638 yards with a 23/9 TD-INT ratio this year. He had a 26/6 TD-INT ratio as a sophomore in 2017.

-- Stanford RB Bryce Love won?t play in his team?s Sun Bowl game vs. Pittsburgh in order to focus on staying healthy and preparing for the NFL Draft. Other key players for the Cardinal who won?t be in uniform against the Panthers included OG Nate Herbig, CB Alameen Murphy, DE Dylan Jackson and safety Ben Edwards. Although he?s listed as ?questionable,? gamblers shouldn?t expect to see TE Kaden Smith in action, either. Herbig and Smith were both first-team All-Pac-12 selections in 2017. Smith was one of three finalists for the Mackey Award. Love finished his collegiate career with 3,865 rushing yards and 30 TDs. David Shaw?s team is favored by six points versus Pitt.

-- According to GameCockCentral.com, South Carolina returned to the practice field Monday in preparation for a Dec. 29 date with Virginia at The Belk Bowl in Charlotte. The Gamecocks welcomed back senior LB Bryson Allen-Williams and Jaycee Horn, and Will Muschamp said both players will play vs. UVA. Williams missed the last four games of the regular season, while Horn was ?out? for the last two. Deebo Samuel won?t play for USC against the Cavaliers in order to prepare for the NFL Draft.

Ohio blanks San Diego St. in Frisco Bowl
December 19, 2018
ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

FRISCO, Texas (AP) Ohio running back A.J. Ouellette doesn't think of Frank Solich as the oldest head coach in FBS. He sees him as the guy who stuck around a smaller program long enough to run it for going on 15 years.

Ouellette gave Solich and the Bobcats a little something to build on in his final game.

The senior had his fourth straight 100-yard game with 164 yards rushing, quarterback Nathan Rourke accounted for all three touchdowns and Ohio rolled to a 27-0 victory over San Diego State in the drizzly Frisco Bowl on Wednesday night.

Ohio (9-4) finished with six wins in seven games and won a second straight bowl game under Solich, who became the oldest head coach in FBS at 74 before bowl season when 79-year-old Bill Snyder retired at Kansas State.

''To have him a little older than most coaches, young coaches are at a school a couple of years and they leave,'' said Ouellette, who finished among Ohio's career rushing leaders with 3,784 yards. ''Him being there 14 years, we've just been lucky that he stayed around.''

Solich spent 19 years on Tom Osborne's staff at Nebraska before replacing the coach at his alma mater in 1998.

After six years in charge of the Cornhuskers, Solich was forced out following a 9-3 season, a year after a 7-7 record that ended a streak of 40 straight winning seasons. A year later, he took the Ohio job and has taken the Bobcats to 10 bowls in 14 seasons.

''I feel like I still have a lot of energy,'' Solich said. ''I still feel like I communicate well with players and coaches. I'm not feeling like the oldest coach, at least not tonight.''

San Diego State was shut out in a bowl for the first time since its first postseason appearance - a 53-0 loss to Hardin-Simmons in the 1948 Harbor Bowl at long-since-demolished Balboa Stadium in San Diego.

The Aztecs had 44 of their 287 yards on one run by Juwan Washington while losing a fourth straight game in a season for the first time in eight years under coach Rocky Long. The fourth-best run defense in FBS gave up a season-high 215 yards rushing to Ohio.

San Diego State's first meeting with Ohio was its first loss in 15 games against Mid-American Conference teams. The 27-point margin ended a streak of 10 straight games decided by single digits for the Aztecs, which the school said was the longest such streak since at least 1980.

''I think you have to look at everything you do, from the top on down,'' Long said. ''We can delve into this as deep as you want. And we're evaluating everything in our program. And it might be nothing but we don't have one big-time player. That might be the difference.''

THE TAKEAWAY

San Diego State: Long is one of five current coaches to lead his team to a bowl in each of his first eight seasons. The Aztecs, who have been to nine straight bowls, are 3-5 in the postseason under Long with consecutive losses in the Dallas area. Army was a 42-35 winner in last year's Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth.

Ohio: The Bobcats have a 1-1 postseason record in Texas, getting even 56 years after losing to West Texas State 15-14 in the school's first bowl appearance in the 1962 Sun Bowl in El Paso. The school's only other game in Texas was in nearby Denton, a 31-30 double-overtime win against North Texas in 2009.

ROURKE'S TOUCHDOWNS

Light rain that fell throughout the first half didn't seem to bother Rourke. The junior fooled the entire San Diego State defense with a fake handoff to Ouellette and ran untouched 9 yards around left end to cap a 15-play drive for a 10-0 lead in the second quarter.

Rourke's other scoring run was from 11 yards before halftime, and he threw a 35-yard TD to a wide-open Andrew Meyer near the goal line on a flea-flicker from Ouellette in the fourth quarter. Rourke was 10 of 22 for 206 yards passing with 44 yards rushing.

UP NEXT

San Diego State: Standout LB Kyahva Tezino is eligible to enter the NFL draft, so his decision will go a long toward determining the Aztecs' hopes of getting back to 10 wins after a two-year streak ended. San Diego State opens at home against Weber State on Aug. 31.

Ohio: Solich's 15th season should be the third as a starter for Rourke, who is losing his top running back in Ouellette and three of his offensive linemen. The Bobcats open at home against Rhode Island on Aug. 31.

Friday's Bowl Tips

**Florida International vs. Toledo**

Bahamas Bowl History

-- The Florida International Golden Panthers (8-4 straight up, 9-3 against the spread) from Conference USA take on the Toledo Rockets (7-5 straight up, 6-6 against the spread) from the Mid-American Conference (MAC) in the Makers Wanted Bahamas Bowl.

-- Butch Davis leads his Golden Panthers into the school's fourth-ever bowl game. They won their initial postseason appearance in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl against Toledo by a 34-32 score back in 2010 under Mario Cristobal, now the head honcho at Oregon. Under Davis, FIU is 0-1 after getting trucked 28-3 by Temple in the Gasparilla Bowl last season.

-- Toledo has a much lengthier bowl history, as this will be their 18th postseason game. They were blanked last season by Appalachian State 34-0 in the Dollar General Bowl on Dec. 23, 2017, and each of their past two bowl games have been losses to the Mountaineers. This will be their first appearance in the Bahamas Bowl representing the MAC. After starting out 6-1 in their first seven bowl games the Rockets are 4-6 SU since a loss in the 2002 Motor City Bowl.

-- FIU has been a friend of bettors this season with a 9-3 ATS mark, including covers in their first four games and each of their two games against Power 5 conference members. They became bowl eligible on Oct. 27 at Western Kentucky, earliest in school history for that accomplishment. They followed that up with a stinker against rival Florida Atlantic, falling 49-14 as two-point favorites at home. The 'over' ended up cashing in their final five games, too.

-- Toledo whipped up on VMI of the FCS in their opener, covering a 48 1/2-point number, but they fell the next week to Miami-Florida by a 49-24 score the following week in the Glass Bowl. The Rockets rebounded nicely, though, shooting down Nevada 63-44 as 10 1/2-point favorites in their highest-scoring game of the season (combined points). Toledo went over the 50-point mark on six occasions, and they scored at least 24 points in 10 of their 12 outings.

-- Toledo ranked 30th in the nation with 448.5 total yards per game (YPG), while posting 223.6 yards per contest to check in 22nd in the country. They were also an impressive 11th in points scored, posting 41.1 PPG. Defensively the Rockets had issues, ranking 94th in total yards allowed (430.1 YPG), 105th in passing yards allowed (257.8 YPG) and 78th in rushing yards allowed (172.3 YPG). They also yielded 30.2 PPG to rank 84th. This one could be a shootout, folks.

-- QB James Morgan was impressive for FIU, completing 65.3 percent of his passes for 2,727 yards, 26 touchdowns and seven interceptions, but he is a pro-style QB and will never be misconstrued with a Cam Newton, Lamar Jackson or other athletic, running quarterbacks. He had a trio of dependable receivers in WR CJ Worton (36-620-6), WR Austin Maloney (28-582-5) and WR Maurice Alexander (35-444-5).

-- When Toledo has the ball, it's all about QB Eli Peters. He no longer has QB Mitchell Guadagni (shoulder) breathing down his neck, as the latter is done for the season with an injury. Peters completed 54.6 percent of his passes for 1,573 yards, 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He is a little more mistake-prone, and less athletic, than Guadagni, who was much more of a dual threat. RB Bryant Koback rushed for 875 yards and 13 scores, while RBs Art Thompkins and Shakif Seymour rolled for a combined 1,089 rushing yards and 11 scores on the ground. WR Cody Thompson is the big-play threat with 10 touchdowns on just 43 grabs, while WR Diontae Johnson and WR Jon'Vea Johnson each had seven receiving scores.

-- FIU has covered four in a row against teams with a winning record, and four of the past five overall. They're also 5-2 ATS in the past seven non-conference games. However, they're 0-4-1 ATS in the past five tries against MAC foes, and 0-5-1 ATS in the past six neutral-site battles.

-- Toledo has covered four of the past five as well, while going 8-3 ATS in the past 11 on grass. They're just 2-5 ATS in the past seven outside the MAC, and 2-5 ATS in the past seven tries against winning teams.

-- The over has cashed in five in a row for FIU, but the under is 6-2-1 in their past nine games in the month of December.

-- The under is 4-1 in Toledo's past five bowl games, while going 5-1 in their past six neutral-site tilts. The under is also 26-12-1 in their past 39 against winning teams. The over has cashed in four in a row outside of the conference, however.

-- Kickoff is slated for 12:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

**Western Michigan vs. Brigham Young**

Idaho Potato Bowl History

-- It's time for the 22nd installment of the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl at Albertson's Stadium in Boise, Idaho. The game features the Western Michigan Broncos (7-5 straight up, 4-8 against the spread) of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) against the Brigham Young Cougars (6-6 straight up, 8-4 against the spread), an FBS Independent.

-- Western Michigan will be playing in their ninth-ever bowl game, and their history in the postseason hasn't been great. They're 1-7 SU all-time, with their only victory in the 2015 Bahamas Bowl against Middle Tennessee. This is their second trip to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, losing their last trip in 2014 against Air Force by a 38-24 score.

-- BYU has an extensive bowl history, but lately it hasn't been terribly good. They're 1-3 SU in their past four bowl games, although they did win their last appearance on Dec. 21, 2016 against Wyoming in the Poinsettia Bowl. This will be their first-ever appearance in the Idaho Potato Bowl. They have appearance in a bowl game only once against the MAC, losing 21-3 in the Motor City Bowl on Dec. 27, 1999 against Marshall, then a member of the conference.

-- Western Michigan didn't start out well this season. They were 0-2 SU/ATS in the first two games, losing to Syracuse and Michigan while allowing 104 total points. They turned things around with a 68-0 win over FCS Delaware State, and that kick-started a six-game win streak, including a 4-0 conference start to gain bowl eligibility by Oct. 20. That's good that they wrapped it up early, as they had a three-game conference losing skid from Oct. 25-Nov. 13 before wrapping up the regular season with a 28-21 win against eventual conference champ Northern Illinois. They finished the season 2-6 ATS in the final eight games.

-- BYU had a strange up-and-down season, and you never knew who was going to show up. They won at Arizona 28-23 to kick off the season as 11 1/2-point underdogs, but followed that up with a 21-18 loss at home to California as two-point favorites. So naturally they went to Wisconsin as 23 1/2-point favorites and won outright, 24-21. BYU was waffled by Washington 35-7 on Sept. 29, and they were hammered by Utah State 45-20 on Oct. 5 to slip to 3-3 SU/ATS. They hung 49 on Hawai'i on Oct. 13 in a win, then followed it up with a 7-6 loss at home to Northern Illinois on Oct. 27. While they were also 3-3 SU in the final six games, they did manage an impressive 5-1 ATS mark during the span.

-- Western Michigan ranked 29th in offense, posting 448.8 yards per game, including 205.0 yards per game on the ground to rank 32nd in the country in rushing. They were also 36th in the nation with 33.2 points per game allowed. Defensively they ranked 51st in the country with 378.3 yards per game given up, and 48th in the land in passing yardage (209.3 YPG). The Broncos were tuned up for 33.3 points per game to check in 103rd in the nation.

-- BYU struggled on offense, posting just 354.8 yards per game to finish 108th in the nation. They weren't great passing (94th in the country) or rushing (88th in the country), while posting just 25.4 yards per game to finished 94th. Defense carried the Cougars, ranking 18th with just 325.0 yards per game allowed, 31st in passing yards (195.2 YPG) and 27th in rushing yards (129.8 YPG). They also had a decent 21.7 PPG allowed to finish 28th. And for whatever reason, BYU had the best field-goal percentage against, as opponents made just 33.3 percent of their attempts against the Cougars.

-- Western Michigan lost QB Jon Wassink (foot) to a season-ending injury in late October, so QB Kaleb Eleby was thrust into the starter's job. He completed 64.9 percent of his passes with 917 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. Eleby wasn't nearly the dual threat as Wassink, who had 16 passing scores and six rushing TDs. RB LeVante Bellamy is the yardage threat, running for 1,172 yards (6.2 yards per carry) and six scores, while Jamauri Bogan was the hammer in short yardage with 702 yards, 4.5 YPC and 15 touchdowns. WR Jayden Reed led the way with 792 yards and eight scores, and WR D'Wayne Eskridge is a deep threat with 19.9 yards per reception, posting 715 yards and three scores on just 36 grabs.

-- BYU has a handful of injuries heading in, but none more important than RBs Squally Canada (lower body) and Lopini Katoa (knee), the top two backs. RB Matt Hadley, a former linebacker, filled in for the two, but he is done for the season with a leg injury. Katoa (77-427-8) and Canada (91-412-5) split the workload this season. If they cannot go it would be RB Riley Burt (46-213-1) tasked with stepping up. QB Zach Wilson (1,261-8-3) took over the starting job from Tanner Mangum (1,063-5-4) midway through the season, and TE Matt Bushman (25-459-2) and WR Talon Shumway (20-319-3) are the ones to watch in the receiving game.

-- Western is 2-6 ATS over the past eight games overall, and 2-5 ATS in their past seven outside of the conference. They're also 1-4 ATS in the past five following a straight-up win.

-- BYU enters on a four-game cover streak, and they're 10-4 ATS over the past 14 non-conference tilts. However, they're 2-6 ATS in the past eight neutral-site games and 0-4 ATS in the past four bowl contests.

-- The 'over' is 4-0 in Western's past four overall, and 4-0 in their past four contests on a fieldturf surface, too. The over is 5-2 ATS in their past seven following a cover.

-- The 'under' is 24-9 in BYU's past 33 games overall, 7-3 in their past 10 neutral-site games and 12-4 in the past 16 against teams with a winning overall record.

-- Kickoff is slated for 4:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

Marshall tops USF 38-20 in Gasparilla Bowl
December 20, 2018
ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) It was a family affair as Marshall ended the season with another bowl victory.

Isaiah Green completed 17 of 25 passes for 221 yards, cousin Keion Davis ran for two touchdowns and Marshall beat South Florida 38-20 in the Gasparilla Bowl on Thursday night.

''It's fun to get to play my senior year with my cousin, sharing the experience,'' said Davis, who was the game MVP.

Marshall, 6-0 in bowl games under head coach Doc Holliday, gained 503 years. The Thundering Herd (9-4) had 282 rushing yards and 221 through the air.

''It was my first time contributing to a (bowl) win,'' Green said. ''It feels good to be able to show people that just because I'm a freshmen doesn't mean I can't play this game like I'm not a freshman.''

Green also had a touchdown run in the first quarter, while Davis' second TD - from 16 yards out - put the Thundering Herd ahead 38-20 with 6 1/2 minutes to play.

Davis had 94 yards on 14 carries, while Brenden Knox gained 93 yards on 12 rushes - all during the first half.

Knox left with a broken hand, giving Davis extended playing time. Davis entered with 308 rushing yards and one TD in eight games.

''Keion is a special player,'' Holliday said. ''He makes things happen every time he gets the opportunity to play.''

Blake Barnett, slowed by shoulder and ankle injuries, replaced Chris Oladokun for South Florida 10 minutes into the game and completed 11 of 23 passes for 212 yards. Barnett, a transfer from Arizona State who also started one game for Alabama in 2016, sat out two of the Bulls' previous three games.

USF (7-6) lost the bowl game played on its regular-season home field to end the season by losing six in a row after a 7-0 start.

''We know this, there's work that needs to be done in the program, and we've got to go get it done,'' coach Charlie Strong said.

Green scored on an 10-yard dash and Anthony Anderson had an one-yard TD run over a 37-second span as Marshall took a 14-0 lead with 4:43 left in the first. The second score was set up by Darius Hodge's fumble recovery and 29-yard return after Barnett couldn't handle a high snap.

After USF wide receiver Tyre McCants took a direct snap and threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Randall St. Felix, the Thundering Herd went up 21-7 during the final minute of the first on Knox's eight-yard TD run.

St. Felix had six receptions for a school-bowl record 165 yards.

Marshall has outscored its opponent 101-39 in the first quarter this season.

Davis' 5-yard run made it 28-7 with 90 seconds left in the second.

USF got to 28-10 on Coby Weiss' 22-yard field goal four seconds before halftime.

South Florida settled for a 31-yard field goal by Weiss on a second-half opening 14-play drive.

''We were in position to make some plays and we didn't make them,'' Strong said. ''We had our opportunities.''

Marshall countered with Justin Rohrwasser's 28-yard field before Barnett connected on a 33-yard scoring pass with St. Felix that cut the Bulls deficit to 31-20 late in the third.

UP NEXT

Marshall: Green will be back next season to anchor a promising offense as the Thundering Herd try to win eight or more games for the fifth time in six years.

South Florida: Barnett returns in 2019 and being healthy could be key in the Bulls' bid for their first American Athletic Conference championship.

Friday?s 6-pack

NFL trends for Week 16:

? Green Bay is 1-7-1 vs spread in its last nine road games.

? Saints covered 10 of their last 11 games.

? New England is 7-1-1 vs spread in last nine divisional home games.

? Chargers covered seven of their last ten games.

? Giants covered their last six road games.

? Chicago covered seven of its last eight games.

Quote of the Day
?To me, the feeling of being comfortable in your own skin is the hardest to attain yet most worthwhile kind of success. And it doesn?t come from following someone else?s precepts or schedules or ideas about how you should be living your life.?
Brian Koppelman

Friday?s quiz
Where did James Harden play his college basketball?

Thursday?s quiz
Mississippi State coach Ben Howland was basketball coach at UCLA before Steve Alford.

Wednesday?s quiz
John Adams was the second President of the United States.

*****************************

Friday?s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud?..

13) How about this idea for the NCAA basketball tournament?

Committee picks the 68 teams, sets the two playoff games, and seeds the top 32 teams, but then there is a nationally-televised draft, where teams can choose who they play in the first round, essentially filing out half the first-round matchups in real time on national TV.

12) It would work this way; the play-in games are set by the committee so those eight teams can get started on preparation, but say Kansas is the #1 national seed- they can choose any of the four #16-seeds to play in the first round.

The #2 and #3 seeds would then choose which 16-seed they wanted to play, the #4 seed would get the last remaining #16 seed, then they move on to the #2-15 matchups. The #5-seed would have first choice of the #15 seeds to play, and so on??.

It would create some more drama and a little transparency- I think people would watch in on TV, for sure.

11) Duquesne +5.5 or +6 Wednesday night was one of worst beats in recent memory; with game tied and 0:05.4 left. Duquesne was called for a foul under the basket- Duquesne coach Keith Dambrot (Lebron James? high school coach) lost his mind at the call, was given two technical fouls and Penn State made all six foul shots.

Duquesne threw away the inbounds pass and that was that; weird thing about Dambrot going nuts was that Dukes were 29-32 on foul line for the game, Penn State 17-26, so not like he was getting the short end of the stick the whole game.

10) Patriots? WR Josh Gordon is stepping away from football to focus on his mental health; he had been averaging 65 receiving yards a game.

9) Houston Rockets made 26-55 3-pointers in their 136-118 win over the Wizards Wednesday, setting an NBA record for most made 3?s in a game; they only took 30 2-point shots (19-30). James Harden scored 35 points in 34:00 for Houston, which won its fifth straight game.

8) Carolina Panthers are shutting QB Cam Newton (shoulder) down for the last two games; Carolina lost its last six games, Taylor Heinicke is the Panthers? new QB; he?s thrown five NFL passes in mop-up duty in six games, five this year and one for Houston LY.

Heinicke played college ball at Old Dominion; this is his first NFL start.

Panthers have won six divisional titles in their 24-year history, but they?ve never had two winning seasons in a row.

7) There were 66 touchdowns scored in Week 15?s NFL games, nine less TD?s than in any other week this season.

In weeks 1-12 this season, NFL teams averaged 23.0 ppg.
In weeks 13-15 this year, NFL teams averaged 19.7 ppg.

6) New Jersey Giants? combined record the last five years: 31-48, 0-1 in playoff games; they seem intent on moving forward with QB Eli Manning, who turns 38 on January 3rd.

Manning helped the Giants win two Super Bowls, going on 4-0 playoff runs in both ?07 and ?11, but 2011 was seven years ago; he has a career playoff record of 8-4.

Giants have had three head coaches the last four years, but never changed QB?s; interesting decision they have here; if I was them, I?d move on to a younger QB, but thats me? this will be interesting to follow next summer/fall.

5) Favorites won the first seven bowl games this month, going 6-1 vs spread.

4) Dallas Cowboys have scored TD?s only 47.6% of time when they had 1st-and-goal this year, the only NFL team with a %age under 50%.

Giants (52.4%), 49ers (54.5%) have next worst marks. Carolina (88.5%), Denver (86.4%) have the best TD percentage on 1st-and-goal series.

3) Newly-signed Mets? catcher, the oft-injured Wilson Ramos gets a $500,000 bonus next season if he catches 100+ games. He?s caught 100+ games in three of nine MLB seasons.

2) Angels gave Matt Harvey $14M, Trevor Cahill $9.5M to pitch for them next season.

1) People on Twitter are crazy; someone was bashing Drew Brees the other day; now chances are the guy lost his fantasy league playoff game or lost his bet on the Saints or the over, but bashing Brees is pretty bleepin? stupid- his team won that game and is 13-1. Grow up!!!

College football betting favorites off to blazing-hot start this bowl season
Andrew Caley

Bowl season can be a tricky thing to handicap. With almost entirely non-conference matchups it?s hard to evaluate how certain teams will stack up. Mix in long layoffs, travel and motivation it can be difficult to pick a side. Well, we are just about a week into the 2018-19 bowl season, and here?s hoping you?ve made it as simple as laying chalk, as favorites have gotten off to a blazing-hot start.

After Marshall's 38-20 victory over South Florida in Thursday night?s Gasparilla Bowl, betting favorites are a perfect 8-0 straight up and a more impressive 7-1 against the spread through the first seven bowl games. Heck, even the lone ATS loss is debateable. Georgia Southern defeated Eastern Michigan 23-21 as 2.5-point favorites in the Camellia Bowl, but the number spent much of the week at -1. So, they could be 8-0 ATS depending on the much you got.

Not only have favorites been covering the spread this bowl season, it hasn?t really been all that close. In five of the seven bowls, the favorite has covered the number by at least two touchdowns, and in four of the seven, they have done so by three. Overall, favorites are covering the spread by an average of 17.3 points per game through the first seven matchups.

Unfortunately, these things tend to have a way of evening out. Favorites cashed just 49.6 percent of the time throughout the college football season. But if you?re looking to keep riding this chalky trend here are the upcoming bowl favorites for this weekend:

Friday, Dec. 21
Bahamas Bowl: Toledo -4.5 (vs FIU)
Famous Idaho Potato Bowl: BYU -12 (vs Western Michigan)

Saturday, Dec. 22
Birmingham Bowl: Memphis -3 (vs Wake Forest)
Armed Forces Bowl: Army -5 (vs Houston)
Dollar General Bowl: Buffalo -1.5 (vs Troy)
Hawaii Bowl: Hawaii -1 (vs Louisiana Tech)

Friday's Bowl Tips
Joe Williams
