NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) FIU fumbled away the opening kickoff, gave up a touchdown 23 seconds into the game and found itself trailing by double digits by the end of the first quarter.
They needed a comeback.
And Anthony Jones might know more about comebacks than anyone on the FIU roster.
Jones - one of two FIU players who were victims of a drive-by shooting in September - rushed for three touchdowns, including the clincher with 41 seconds remaining as the Panthers topped Toledo 35-32 on Friday in the Bahamas Bowl. Jones tied a school record with the three scores, and FIU (9-4) set a school record with its ninth win of the season.
''I'm extremely happy for my teammates, these seniors, all my coaches, the support staff at FIU, they were all behind me the whole time,'' Jones said. ''I've been extremely blessed by the man above.''
Jones and offensive lineman Mershawn Miller were shot in the city of Opa-locka, Florida - just north of downtown Miami - on the afternoon of Sept. 6. The alleged gunman is in custody and is facing two counts of attempted first-degree murder. Miller was hit in the arm; Jones was shot in the back and the bullet exited just under his eye. He lost about 20 pounds in the days afterward, during which he was fed by tube.
''This is a gift from God,'' FIU coach Butch Davis said.
Eli Peters had three touchdown passes and threw for 264 yards for Toledo (7-6), which fell in a bowl game for the third consecutive year. Jon'Vea Johnson had two of those TD grabs, and Diontae Johnson had six catches for 98 yards and a score for the Rockets.
It was FIU's second bowl victory. The other came in 2010 - also against Toledo.
''It's been an up and down year,'' Toledo coach Jason Candle said. ''It has had its highlights, and its moments where we weren't so good. Consistency is everything in college football. ... You have to be really consistent, really good at what you do for the long haul and there were times this year that we didn't handle that so well.''
Jones scored on runs of 6, 30 and 18 yards for the Panthers. Sterling Palmer caught a touchdown pass and Maurice Alexander rushed for another score for FIU.
Christian Alexander completed 17 of 26 passes for 209 yards and a touchdown for FIU. The Panthers got a huge fourth-down conversion on a pass hauled in by Tony Gaiter IV with 2:40 remaining, the biggest play in a drive where Jones capped the win with his final TD run - the 18-yarder that sealed the win.
FIU played without starting quarterback James Morgan, who has an arm injury. Morgan completed 65 percent of his passes for 2,727 yards and 26 touchdowns in the regular season. FIU also didn't have running back Shawndarrius Phillips, who was left home after a domestic battery charge stemming from a June case became known this month.
And yet, the Panthers had more than enough.
They got on the board when Jones got his first rushing score of the day early in the second quarter, took a 14-10 lead into the half and grabbed the lead for good on Jones' 30-yard run with 3:47 left in the third quarter.
''We just played as a team today, man,'' Jones said. ''Our coaches did a great job preparing us for this bowl game. Hats off to Toledo, but we did a great job today. We made history today.''

FIU: Jones became the sixth player to rush for three touchdowns in a game for FIU, and the first since Kedrick Rhodes did it in a loss to Louisiana in 2011.
ROCKET OFFENSE
Toledo finished the year with 525 points, the second most in school history. The Rockets scored 549 points in 2011, and this season's total was 16 better than the 509 they posted last season.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) Zach Wilson set a BYU record and tied the NCAA bowl mark with 18-for-18 passing, throwing for 317 yards and four touchdowns in the Cougars' 49-18 victory over Western Michigan on Friday in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.
Selected the game MVP, Wilson tied the NCAA bowl record for completion percentage set by Riley Skinner at 11 for 11 for Wake Forest in the 2008 EagleBank Bowl.
Down 10-7 at halftime, BYU (7-6) scored 28 points in the third quarter. Wilson connected with Aleva Hifo for a 70-yard scoring strike, and Riley Burt had a 37-yard touchdown run in the quarter.
Western Michigan (7-6) rolled up 192 yards of offense in the first half, then managed only 41 yards on 18 plays in the decisive third quarter.

College Football Saturday Bowl Notebook (Dec. 22)
As we head deeper into December, and inexorably closer to the college football playoffs, the excitement of bowl season really begins to pick up.
We have no less than nine games on the schedule for this week, with the action kicking off on Tuesday night all the way through to Saturday. We are doing all we can to make sure that you have picks and predictions for all the games, but for the purposes of this piece, let?s take a quick look at the schedule for Saturday, December 22.
There are four games on tap on that day, so let?s dig as little deeper into each one with all the odds provided by YouWager.eu.
Birmingham Bowl ? Wake Forest Demon Deacons (+3? -110) vs. Memphis Tigers (-3? -110)
The beauty of this Saturday?s scheduling is that you can watch all 4 games, as the start times have been set up to avoid any overlaps. Memphis head into this one with a bit of a bad history in bowl games, losing each of their last 4, while the Wake Forest Demon Deacons are on a 2-bowl win streak. Despite those results, it is the Tigers who come into this one as a favorite, quite possibly because of their offense, which cranked out over 43 PPG this season. Wake Forest are going to have their hands full here and are likely to be on the losing end of this one.
Armed Forces Bowl ? Houston Cougars (+3? -110) vs. Army Black Knights (-3? -110)
The Houston Cougars were one of the best offensive teams in college football this season, averaging over 46 PPG, but they have a leaky defense that is susceptible to the run. That would appear to swing things in the favor of Army and their triple option offense, where they will run the ball over and over again. The Black Knights averaged close to 300 YPG on the ground this season, using a style of offense designed to keep drives alive. If Army can control time of possession, they could steal the win here.

Dollar General Bowl ? Buffalo Bulls (-2 -110) vs. Troy Trojans (+2 -110)
I may well be wrong, but for me, this looks like the game of the day on Saturday. These teams appear to be very evenly matched in several different ways and we may well be looking at a match-up that comes down to who gets the ball last. Buffalo had 10 wins on the season, but they lost the biggest game of their season, going down to Appalachian State in the Sun Belt Conference Championship Game. It is going to be interesting to see how they rebound from that one against a Troy team coming off a very good 9-win season. A close one here, with the slight edge to Troy.
Hawaii Bowl ? LA Tech Bulldogs (pk -110) vs. Hawaii Warriors (pk -110)
This is one of those bowl games that essentially ends up being a road game for one of the teams. In this case, it is the LA Tech Bulldogs who need to go on the road, albeit to a very nice destination spot, to face the Hawaii Warriors. That trip has them in as the slight underdogs here, but we should all be paying attention to the fact that the Bulldogs had a winning record on the road this season. They will certainly be looking at this as more than a vacation against a Hawaii team that went 5-2 SU at home. It would be a mild upset, but I think the Bulldogs might just pull it out

Dollar General Bowl ? Buffalo Bulls (-2 -110) vs. Troy Trojans (+2 -110)
I may well be wrong, but for me, this looks like the game of the day on Saturday. These teams appear to be very evenly matched in several different ways and we may well be looking at a match-up that comes down to who gets the ball last. Buffalo had 10 wins on the season, but they lost the biggest game of their season, going down to Appalachian State in the Sun Belt Conference Championship Game. It is going to be interesting to see how they rebound from that one against a Troy team coming off a very good 9-win season. A close one here, with the slight edge to Troy.
Hawaii Bowl ? LA Tech Bulldogs (pk -110) vs. Hawaii Warriors (pk -110)
This is one of those bowl games that essentially ends up being a road game for one of the teams. In this case, it is the LA Tech Bulldogs who need to go on the road, albeit to a very nice destination spot, to face the Hawaii Warriors. That trip has them in as the slight underdogs here, but we should all be paying attention to the fact that the Bulldogs had a winning record on the road this season. They will certainly be looking at this as more than a vacation against a Hawaii team that went 5-2 SU at home. It would be a mild upset, but I think the Bulldogs might just pull it out

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) During a 10-loss season three years ago, Army coach Jeff Monken saw something that made him believe the Black Knights were on the way to being a good team.
The freshmen from that team are now seniors going into their last game - Saturday against Houston (8-4) in the Armed Forces Bowl, when the No. 22 Black Knights will try to complete the program's first 11-win season.
''Didn't have a great start to their careers,'' Monken said. ''But for them to experience 10 losses, seven of them being by a touchdown or less, and they would just continue to come back each week and battle and fight to the end. I saw a fight in that team that encouraged me.''
Two weeks after beating Navy for the third year in a row , Army (10-2) is playing in a bowl for the third consecutive season. The cadets have their second 10-win season in a row, and an eight-game winning streak since an overtime loss at Oklahoma on Sept. 22.
Fullback Darnell Woolfolk described that as ''such a big disappointment'' and said it made them determined not to lose again.
''That definitely let us know that we could play with anyone,'' linebacker Cole Christiansen said.
Houston, without injured quarterback D'Eriq King and NFL draft-prepping defensive tackle Ed Oliver, has lost three of its four games since a 7-1 start.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) The Memphis Tigers' formidable ground game took a big hit when All-America running back Darrell Henderson opted to skip the bowl game. Their offensive coordinator has already left for another job, and the defensive boss isn't far behind.
The Tigers (8-5) are hoping to overcome those potential issues against Wake Forest (6-6) Saturday in the Birmingham Bowl at Legion Field. The Demon Deacons also will be without their biggest offensive star, wide receiver Greg Dortch, with a hand injury.
For Memphis, Patrick Taylor Jr. and Tony Pollard are expected to shoulder much of the running load.
''We're all excited for Darrell and his future opportunities,'' Tigers coach Mike Norvell said. ''I know he's going to be tuned in and watching and cheering. These two guys have prepared. There's nothing different going into any game. These guys have been key playmakers for us.''
Still, Henderson's departure dealt a blow to the nation's No. 2 rushing offense's apparent advantage over the Atlantic Coast Conference's 10th-best run defense.
He ranked second nationally with 1,909 yards rushing, while leading the nation with 25 total touchdowns and an 8.9-yard per carry average. Taylor has topped 1,000 rushing yards and Pollard is averaging 7.3 yards on 61 carries.
''It's not like they had one great back and nobody else,'' Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson said. ''That's been a three-headed monster all year for them. And if you still have two of your best three, there's plenty of stuff they can do.''

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) Army quarterback Kelvin Hopkins Jr. ran for 170 yards and an Armed Forces Bowl-record five touchdowns and the No. 22 Black Knights overwhelmed Houston 70-14 on Saturday to reach 11 wins for the first time in program history.
The Black Knights (11-2) won their ninth consecutive game since an overtime loss at playoff team Oklahoma exactly three months earlier.
Hopkins had a nifty 77-yard TD run on the last play of the first quarter for a 14-0 lead. The junior quarterback initially ran right before cutting back the other way and alluding one tackler. He sent two other defenders sliding to the ground when he switched directions again back toward the middle of the field.
Houston (8-5) lost for the fourth time in five games since starting 7-1 and getting into the AP Top 25 poll for a week in late October. The Cougars suffered their most-lopsided loss in their 27 bowl games, and their biggest loss overall since a 66-10 loss at UCLA in 1997.
Along with his 11 rushing attempts before coming out of the game midway through the third quarter when it was 49-7, Hopkins completed the first 1,000-yard passing season for Army since 2007. He was 3-of-3 passing for 70 yards, including a 54-yarder that set up one of his three 1-yard TD plunges. He also had a 2-yard TD run.
Army got 507 of its 592 total yards on the ground in its highest-scoring game this season - and the most points in the program's nine bowl appearances. The Black Knights won a bowl for the third consecutive year, including last year's Armed Force Bowl over San Diego State.

WAKE FOREST 37, MEMPHIS 34
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Jamie Newman scored on a 1-yard run with 34 seconds left to help give Wake Forest a 37-34 victory over Memphis in the Birmingham Bowl on Saturday.
The Demon Deacons (7-6) then had to wait to celebrate until Riley Patterson's 43-yard field goal attempt went wide right as time expired.
Both teams scored touchdowns over the final 1:15. Memphis (8-6) lost a big lead for the second straight game after jumping ahead by 18 points in the first half.
Game MVP Newman ran for three touchdowns and passed for a fourth to lead Wake Forest, throwing for 328 yards and rushing 23 times for 91 more.
He led the Demon Deacons on a 75-yard drive starting at the 1:15 mark, covering most of it with completions of 49 and 20 yards to Alex Bachman.
The second catch was reviewed and the spot was upheld at the 1-yard line after Bachman's right arm hit the pylon. Newman kept the ball for the go-ahead score.
Memphis' Tony Pollard scored on a 97-yard kickoff return to tie the NCAA career mark with seven.

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Sawyer Smith threw for 320 yards and four touchdowns, B.J. Smith and Sidney Davis ran for touchdowns and Troy beat Buffalo in the Dollar General Bowl on Saturday night.
Troy (10-3) secured the hard-fought win on Davis' 20-yard touchdown run with 3:09 remaining, a play after Buffalo's Tyree Jackson fumbled to give the Trojans possession.
The entertaining game that had several big swings in momentum, especially during a strange third quarter that featured Buffalo scoring seven points despite not running an offensive play.
Troy took a 21-17 lead on Smith's 2-yard touchdown run with 9:47 left in the third and then immediately recovered an onside kick. The Trojans were driving for another score before B.J. Smith's fumble bounced into the hands of Buffalo's Tyrone Hill, who ran 93 yards for a touchdown to give the Bulls a 24-21 lead. Troy jumped ahead 35-24 after two quick touchdowns in the fourth quarter and held off Buffalo's final rally.
Jackson threw for 274 yards with a touchdown and an interception for Buffalo (10-4).

The Bulldogs (8-5) rallied from a 7-3 halftime deficit to secure their fifth bowl victory in as many seasons, a program first.
Smith threw for 285 yards on 19-of-31 passing with an interception. He tossed a 58-yard touchdown pass to Jaqwis Dancy and scored on a 4-yard run that was part of a 21-point third quarter.
Louisiana Tech took the lead for good on Israel Tucker's 5-yard TD run with 10:27 left in the third.
Bulldogs defensive end Jaylon Ferguson became the NCAA's career sacks leader when he dropped Hawaii quarterback Chevan Cordeiro for a 2-yard loss late in the third. Ferguson's 45 sacks broke the previous mark set by Arizona State's Terrell Suggs.
Hawaii played without wide receiver John Ursua, who leads the nation with 16 touchdown catches. Ursua was sidelined with an undisclosed injury.
The Bulldogs had a Hawaii Bowl-record nine sacks, four by Willie Baker. Amik Robertson had two of their three interceptions.

13) Maybe the biggest downside of fantasy football being so popular is when guys don?t do so well at this time of year, they sometimes take a decent amount of grief from people who have them on their fantasy teams.
I have a fantasy baseball team and must admit that I take it pretty seriously, but I know enough to take it in stride when things don?t go my way. Fantasy football can be pretty random, as far as who gets targeted in the red zone, etc, take defeats in stride, please?!?!?!
12) Former NFL player/GM Matt Millen had a heart transplant over the weekend; the surgery was said to go well. Pretty amazing stuff medical people can do. Hope Mr Millen is back feeling well soon.
11) Tennessee Titans signed QB Austin Davis as insurance, with Marcus Mariota banged up and Matt Cassel his backup. Titans play Indianapolis for a playoff spot Sunday night.

**Boston College vs. Boise State**
First Responder Bowl
-- The Boston College Eagles (7-5 straight up, 7-5 against the spread) of the Atlantic Coast Conference will battle the Boise State Broncos (10-3 straight up, 7-5-1 against the spread) from the Mountain West Conference in the First Responder Bowl, formerly the Heart of Dallas Bowl.
-- The Eagles haven't had a lot of success in bowl games lately. They won the 2016 Quick Lane Bowl over Maryland by a 36-30 count, but that was their only victory in the past seven postseason games dating back to 2008. This will be their first appearnce in the First Responder Bowl, and their first postseason appearance in the state of Texas since they won the 1985 Cotton Bowl over Houston by a 45-28 score.
-- The Broncos have had a much better measure of success in bowl games recently, posting victories in seven of their past nine appearances, including last season over Oregon in the Las Vegas Bowl, 38-28. Under head coach Bryan Harsin they're 3-1 in four bowl games in each of the past four seasons. This will be Boise State's first appearance in the First Responder Bowl, and their first bowl game in the Lone Star State since dropping TCU 34-31 in the Fort Worth Bowl back on Dec. 23, 2003.
-- B.C. had an exciting season and they outperformed expectations like they usually do. The fired out of the box with three wins against UMass, Holy Cross and at Wake Forest to start 3-0 SU/ATS with an 'over' in each outing. They were humbled at Purdue Sept. 22 by a 30-13 count, but they beat fellow bowl team Temple 45-35 on Sept. 29. A narrow loss and cover at N.C. State was a tough pill to swallow, but they rattled off three straight ACC wins against Louisville, Miami and at Virginia Tech to easily attain bowl eligibility. The Eagles finished on a three-game slide and non-cover streak with losses to Clemson, Florida State and Syracuse, all bowl teams.
-- The Eagles were rather marginal in all aspects, ranking 66th in the country in total yards (404.4 yards per game), 80th in passing yards (215.2 YPG) and 51st in rushing yards (189.2 YPG). Defensively they were just 71st overall in total yards allowed (403.2 YPG), and 96th against the pass (247.8 YPG). They were slightly better in rushing defense (155.3 YPG) and points allowed (25.7 PPG), ranking 53rd overall in both areas.
-- Boise opened with an emphatic 56-20 win at Troy on Sept. 1, and they squashed UConn 62-7 as 34-point favorites in Game 2. However, they were overmatched by Power 5 Conference member Oklahoma State, and they were tripped up at home on the Smurf Turf against San Diego State to sit 3-2 SU/ATS through five games. That's when their run started, posting seven straight wins to qualify for the MWC title game. They were tripped up by Fresno State in overtime by a 19-16 score in a snowstorm. The 'under' ended up 5-0 in their final five ames, and 7-2 in the final nine.
-- The Broncos ranked 23rd in total yards (459.5 YPG), while ranking 18th in the nation with 292.0 passing yards per outing. They also checked in 24th in the land with 35.4 points per game. *ARLINGTON, Texas (AP)* Clemson coach Dabo Swinney says star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence and two other players failed NCAA tests for performance enhancing drugs and might not play in the Cotton Bowl against No. 3 Notre Dame.
Swinney said at a news conference Monday at AT&T Stadium that the NCAA informed Clemson trace amounts of ostarine were found in samples given by Lawrence, reserve offensive tackle Zach Giella and freshman tight end Braden Galloway. Ostarine, also known as enobosarm, is used to treat osteoporosis, but can also act like an anabolic steroid.
Swinney said the players told him they had not intentionally taken the substance. Clemson is awaiting results of a second sample from each player. The NCAA ban for failing a PED test is one calendar year.

Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said in a statement that Brown, tight end Kedrick James and offensive lineman Elliot Baker didn't make the trip to Miami on Monday.
Top-ranked Alabama faces Oklahoma Saturday night in the College Football Playoff semifinal game.
Saban didn't indicate the duration of the suspensions or whether they might extend to the national championship game if Alabama wins.
Brown replaced Lester Cotton as the starter in midseason. Brown has been dealing with a turf toe injury.

Swinney said at a news conference Monday at AT&T Stadium that the NCAA informed Clemson trace amounts of ostarine were found in samples given by Lawrence, reserve offensive tackle Zach Giella and freshman tight end Braden Galloway. Ostarine, also known as enobosarm, is used to treat osteoporosis, but can also act like an anabolic steroid.
Swinney said the players told him they had not intentionally taken the substance. Clemson is awaiting results of a second sample from each player. The NCAA ban for failing a PED test is one calendar year.

*MIAMI (AP)* Alabama has suspended starting left guard Deonte Brown and two other players from the Orange Bowl for violating unspecified team rules.
Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said in a statement that Brown, tight end Kedrick James and offensive lineman Elliot Baker didn't make the trip to Miami on Monday.
Top-ranked Alabama faces Oklahoma Saturday night in the College Football Playoff semifinal game.
Saban didn't indicate the duration of the suspensions or whether they might extend to the national championship game if Alabama wins.
Brown replaced Lester Cotton as the starter in midseason. Brown has been dealing with a turf toe injury.
