STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Jose Berrios, Minnesota Twins (2-1, 2.30 ERA, $200):
Berrios has his 2019 off to another strong start. He has been close to unhittable in his first four starts (all quality starts) with a 0.73 WHIP and a .206 opponent on base percentage. He?ll be a hefty -190 road favorite when he takes the mound for the Twins against the Orioles on Friday.

SLUMPING

Corey Kluber, Cleveland Indians (1-2, 6.16 ERA, $-309):
It has been an inconsistent start to the year for the former Cy Young award winner. Two of his last three starts have been ugly, allowing 10 earned runs on 14 hits and eight walks, while not being able to get out of the fourth inning in either. And those games where against the Royals and White Sox, not exactly a murderer?s row of hitters. Despite his struggles, Kluber and the Tribe will still be moderate -155 home favorites when they host the Braves Friday night.

3 STRIKES

FEELING THE THIN AIR

On paper, the 11-7 Phillies are clearly a better team than the 7-12 Rockies, but they have struggled on the road especially in Colorado. The Phillies are 7-20 in their last 27 road games, and 8-20 in their last 28 road games with Vince Velasquez starting. They're also 0-5 in their last five contests at Coors Field.

UNDER TRENDS COLLIDE

Cinncinnati heads to San Diego with both sides running on strong Under trends. The Reds have been the best Under bet in the majors this season, going 4-14 O/U overall, and the Under has also hit in 23 of their previous 29 road games dating back to last season. The Padres are 3-8 O/U in their last eight home games, and are 6-1-1 to the Under in Matt Strahm's last eight starts.

PITCH BETTER HAVE MY MONEY

Yonder Alonso has gotten off to a brutal start in his White Sox career, batting just .200 through the first 18 games of the season. But he will be facing off against a familiar foe as the Sox head to Detroit tonight. Jordan Zimmerman will be getting the start for the Tigers and has been wrecked by Alonso in the past. Alonso has batted .389 with seven hits in 18 at bats against Zimmerman, two of those hits have been doubles and four have been homeruns. An Alonso homerun in today's contest pays out at +700.

Friday's Diamond Notes
April 19, 2019
By Kevin Rogers

Hottest team: Rays (8-2 last 10 games)

Although Tampa Bay fell in extra innings on Thursday to Baltimore as a -250 home favorite, the Rays are coming off their sixth consecutive series victory to sit atop the AL East at 14-5. Tampa Bay erased a 5-2 deficit to force extras, but Baltimore scored a run in the top of the 11th inning to win 6-5 and prevent the Rays from their first sweep at Tropicana Field this season.

The Rays welcome in the defending champion Red Sox this weekend as Boston has slumped to a 6-13 record out of the gate. Manager Kevin Cash is going back to the bullpen-by-committee approach on Friday with right-hander Ryne Stanek making his fifth start of the season. Stanek has yet to pitch more than two innings in any of his eight appearances, while not allowing a run in four starts. In Boston?s previous trip to Tampa Bay last August, the Rays pulled off a three-game sweep, while allowing only five runs.

Coldest team: Marlins (1-9 last 10 games)

For as well as the Rays are playing, their Sunshine State counterparts are playing as bad as anyone in baseball. Granted, the talent isn?t there, but Miami has plated two runs or less in each of its last eight losses, while getting shut out in back-to-back home defeats to the Cubs this week. The Marlins own an 0-6 record in series openers, while scoring three runs in their past four Game 1?s.

The Nationals travel to Miami this weekend as Washington grabbed 13 of 19 matchups last season. The last time the Marlins won a game, Caleb Smith started against the Phillies six days ago in a 10-3 blowout. The Miami southpaw yielded one hit in six innings as the Marlins improved to 7-3 in his past 10 starts since May 2018. Smith heads to the hill on Friday opposite former Marlins? standout Anibal Sanchez, who is seeking his first win in four starts this season.

Hottest pitcher: German Marquez, Rockies (2-1, 2.00 ERA)

Colorado finally broke through the win column at Coors Field following an 0-5 start at home in Thursday?s 6-2 triumph over Philadelphia. The Rockies turn to their best pitcher of 2019 so far in Marquez, who tossed a complete-game one-hitter against the Giants his last time out in a 4-0 win. The good news for the right-hander is in three road starts he has given up one earned run, while Colorado owns a 3-0 record away from Coors. The bad news is Marquez was racked in his lone home start against the Braves by giving up five runs in five innings of a 7-1 loss. Last season when Marquez faced the Phillies at home, he shut them down by striking out 11 batters in seven scoreless innings of a 14-0 rout.

Coldest pitcher: Corey Kluber, Indians (1-2, 6.16 ERA)

Kluber is coming off three consecutive seasons of 18 or more victories, while capturing the 2017 AL Cy Young award. However, the Cleveland ace couldn?t hold onto an early 3-0 lead at Kansas City his last time out as he was racked for six runs in less than three innings of a 9-8 loss. Kluber has pitched well in two starts, but has also not pitched past the fourth inning in losses to the Royals and White Sox. The right-hander returns home to face the suddenly struggling Braves as Cleveland seeks its fourth consecutive win after sweeping Seattle on the road.

Biggest OVER run: Blue Jays (6-3 last nine)

Toronto continues its road trip as the Blue Jays are coming off their first series win of the season at Minnesota. The Jays? offense busted out by scoring 5, 6, and 7 runs in the three victories at Target Field, while plating at least four runs in seven of the past nine games. Toronto ventures to Oakland to face an Athletics? squad that was limited to three runs against the Astros in a two-game home series. Marcus Stroman is winless in four starts for Toronto, but he hasn?t been helped in the run support department as the Jays have scratched together only six runs in those four appearances.

Biggest UNDER run: Dodgers (6-0 last six)

Los Angeles allowed five or more runs 10 times in its first 15 games. The Dodgers? staff has locked down of late by giving up a total of eight runs in the past five contests, all victories. L.A. held off Milwaukee on Thursday, 3-1 as the Brewers? lone run came on a Christian Yelich solo homer in the ninth inning. The Dodgers had cashed three straight OVER tickets prior to this 6-0 run to the UNDER as Ross Stripling takes the mound on Friday at Miller Park. Stripling dominated the Brewers at Chavez Ravine last weekend by giving up four hits and one run in eight innings of a 7-1 victory to mark his second consecutive UNDER.

Matchup to watch: Astros at Rangers

Both Lone Star State squads have looked good to begin this season as they hook up for their second series this month. The Rangers captured two of three in Arlington in early April, as Texas limited Houston to only six runs in the entire series.

However, Houston has been on fire since dropping that series by winning 10 of its last 11 games. The Astros ran off 10 consecutive victories at one point, including sweeps of the Athletics, Yankees, and Mariners. Houston saw its hot streak end in Wednesday?s 2-1 setback at Oakland, but the Astros own a perfect 6-0 record in series openers this season.

Justin Verlander (2-0, 3.52 ERA) has tossed quality starts in three of four outings this season, while coming off a gem at Seattle in which he struck out 11 batters in six innings. However, the lone non-quality appearance for Verlander came at Texas on April 2 as the former Cy Young winner was knocked around for four runs in four innings of a 6-4 defeat as a hefty -220 road favorite.

Drew Smyly (0-1, 7.15 ERA) counters for the Rangers, who are fresh off a three-game home sweep of the slumping Angels. Smyly is winless in three starts, while yielding four earned runs in each of his past two outings. In his first start of the season against the Astros, the southpaw scattered four hits and allowed one run in three innings of a 2-1 setback in the series opener.

Betcha didn?t know: Since the start of last season, the Giants have compiled a 3-10 road record when Madison Bumgarner takes the mound. San Francisco has lost each of Bumgarner?s past five starts away from Oracle Park, including defeats to Los Angeles and San Diego earlier this month. The Giants continue their road trip in Pittsburgh, as the Pirates have won four consecutive games at PNC Park.

LEADING OFF: Red Sox-Rays at opposite ends, Sabathia sharp
April 18, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

EARLY TEST

Off to the best start in baseball, Kevin Kiermaier and the Tampa Bay Rays host the wobbling Red Sox. Boston is just 6-13, and a real bad series at Tropicana Field could drop the defending World Series champions into a double-digit deficit.

Rays manager Kevin Cash will use an opener for the third straight game. Tampa Bay is again employing a reliever to start because ace Blake Snell is out with a broken toe - the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner might have a bullpen session this weekend.

Eduardo Rodriguez (1-2, 7.98 ERA) starts for the Red Sox, who will play Tampa Bay six times in 10 days. Boston has placed second baseman Dustin Pedroia back on the injured list because of left knee irritation.

A HITTING SABBATICAL

CC Sabathia takes a unique streak into this matchup vs. Kansas City: The Yankees lefty is the only pitcher in big league history to have back-to-back starts in the regular season of at least five innings while allowing no walks and no more than one hit.

The 38-year-old Sabathia pitched five innings of one-hit ball against the White Sox last week in his season debut. He did the same thing last September against the Rays before being ejected for hitting a batter.

Johnny Vander Meer threw back-to-back no-hitters for Cincinnati in 1938, walking a total of 11 in those two games.

LATELY

Diamondbacks rookie Christian Walker is showing a knack for late knocks. He has hit six home runs this season, all of them in the seventh inning or beyond.

Walker struck out in his first three at-bats Thursday, but hit a two-run homer in the seventh that helped Arizona beat Atlanta 4-1. He then added a double, and is batting .619 (13 for 21) after the sixth inning.

GET GOING!

The Giants are 8-12 and part of the problem is they're getting off to slow starts. San Francisco is the only team in the majors that hasn't yet scored in the first inning. Overall, Buster Posey and the Giants are hitting only 6 for 63 (.095) in the opening frame.

They'll try to break that early hex when they face Pittsburgh righty Jordan Lyles (0.82 ERA in two starts) at PNC Park. Madison Bumgarner (1-2, 3.12) pitches for the Giants.

QUICK LONE STAR REPRISE

The Houston Astros are already making their second trip to rival Texas. The Astros, two-time defending AL West champs, surged to the division lead on a 10-game winning streak that ended Wednesday with a loss in Oakland. The Rangers, who are supposed to be rebuilding, have won a season-best four straight and took two of three from the Astros in Arlington in the second series of the season. Houston ace Justin Verlander faces Drew Smyly, one of several reclamation projects in the Texas rotation. The teams play again in three weeks in Houston.

Weekend Watch
April 18, 2019
By Joe Williams

Friday, April 19

Madison Bumgarner takes the ball on Friday for the series opener against the Pirates in the Steel City. San Francisco is just 1-5 in the past six starts by MadBum, and 0-4 in his past four assignments against NL Central opponents. In addition, they're just 9-23 in his past 32 starts away from home. The Pirates have won four in a row at home, and four of the past five overall. In addition, the Bucs have won 15 of the past 20 games against teams with a losing overall mark. San Francisco has won seven of their past nine trips to Pittsburgh, too.

Justin Verlander makes the start on the road against the Texas Rangers against Drew Smyly in a matchup which looks ultra-favorable on paper. The 'Stros have won seven in a row against teams with a winning overall mark, and they're 4-0 in the past four after an odd day. In addition, Houston has won 21 of the past 29 against AL West foes, and 20 of their past 28 vs. LHP. Houston has also won 20 of Verlander's past 24 starts on the road, and 16 of his past 22 against divisional opponents. The Rangers have won four in a row at home, and they're 5-1 in the past six at Globe Life Park vs. RHP. Houston has also won 18 of their past 23 trips to Arlington, while the under has hit in four of the past five meetings in Texas. Weather Report The Diamondbacks and Cubs will square off in an afternoon battle at Wrigley, and the wind will be blowing in briskly from left field into the face of the batters at a whopping 24-27 mph. That will help 'under' bettors immensely. There is a 30 percent chance of precipitation in Baltimore for the Twins-O's matchup. If the game does get underway, the winds will be blowing out at 17-20 mph to left-center field.

In Pittsburgh, a delay is likely, as the weather forecast calls for a 50 percent or greater chance of rain through 10 p.m., lowering to 30 percent. The Giants and Bucs might have trouble getting underway. There is a 30-40 percent chance of rain for Royals-Yankees, too. If they are able to play, the winds will blow 17-20 mph from right to left. The White Sox-Tigers will deal with 40 or more percent chance of rain, and winds 19-22 mph blowing out to right field. For the Braves-Indians, they'll also faced a steady rain, and it sounds unlikely they'll get the interleague series opener in. In Texas, the Astros and Rangers will deal with winds of 10-13 mph blowing out to the right-center field power alley. Lastly, the Mets and Cardinals will also deal with breezy conditions, blowing 15-18 mph from left field to first base.

Saturday, April 20

Matt Shoemaker will take the ball for the Blue Jays, and he knows the Athletics well from his days with the Angels. He is 4-1 with a 3.79 ERA across eight starts against the A's since the start of the 2016 season, and they're hitting just .258 against him. Shoemaker is 2-1 with a 3.91 ERA in five outings at Overstock.com Coliseum, and the A's are hitting just .217 against him there with 24 strikeouts over 25 1/3 innings. If anyone gives him trouble, it would be who you expect. 1B/DH Khris Davis is 6-for-15 (.400) with two doubles and two solo homers, while OF Stephen Piscotty has two homers and seven RBI vs. Shoemaker in just nine at-bats.

The Rays will take their hacks against Red Sox SP Rick Porcello, who enters 0-3 with an 11.12 ERA and 3.00 WHIP. The struggles could continue, as Tampa Bay's current roster is a collective .287 with five doubles, a triple, two homers and 13 RBI across 150 at-bats. However, since the start of the 2016 season he is 9-6 with a 3.71 ERA with 106 strikeouts over 106 2/3 innings across 17 starts vs. Tampa Bay. That includes a 5-3 mark, 2.93 ERA and 56 strikeouts over 55 1/3 innings in nine starts at Tropicana Field.

Gerrit Cole and the Astros will look to take care of the Rangers in Arlington. You know Houston's dominance vs. Texas, but he is just 1-2 overall this season despite a 3.24 ERA, 36 strikeouts and a 0.92 WHIP. Since joining the Astros he is 2-0 with a 2.88 ERA in four starts vs. the Rangers, and they're hitting just .180 against him with nine walks and 40 strikeouts across 25 innings.

Sunday, April 21

Collin McHugh will face the Rangers in the series finale. He is humming along with a 3-1 record, 1.96 ERA and 0.83 WHIP with 27 strikeouts over 23 innings in four starts. Since the start of the 2016 season he is 2-1 with a 3.62 ERA with 26 strikeouts and just three homers over 27 1/3 innings in four starts and six relief appearances against Texas. He is also 2-1 in three starts and three relief appearances at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, but he has a dismal 5.12 ERA in those appearances. If anyone gives him trouble, it might be Elvis Andrus and Rougned Odor. Andrus is 7-for-22 (.318) against him overall, while Odor is 7-for-23 (.304) with a double, a home run and five RBI.

In a replay of the 1995 World Series, the Cleveland Indians host the Atlanta Braves at Progressive Field on Sunday Night Baseball. RHP Shane Bieber will make the start, and he has impressed to date for a team already with an embarrassment of riches in the pitching department. Bieber is 2-0 with a 1.71 ERA and 0.81 WHIP over his three starts and four appearances across 21 innings with 22 strikeouts. He enters play with three consecutive quality starts. Max Fried is also on a similar roll, posting three straight quality starts heading into play, posting a 2-0 record, 0.92 ERA and 0.86 WHIP with 12 strikeouts and just four walks over 19 2/3 innings. While the Braves entered the series 5-1 in the past six interleague games, the under is 4-1 in their past five interleague road outings vs. RHP. The under is 5-1 in Cleveland's past six interleague home games against teams with a winning record entering the series, too. The under was also 9-2-1 in the previous 12 meetings between Atlanta and Cleveland heading into Friday's series opener.

Betts, Moreland homers lead Red Sox to 6-4 win over Rays
April 20, 2019
By The Associated Press

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) Mookie Betts and Mitch Moreland hit back-to-back homers for the go-ahead runs in the eighth inning and the struggling Boston Red Sox beat the MLB-best Tampa Bay Rays 6-4 on Friday night.

With the game tied at 4, Betts hit a leadoff shot off Diego Castillo (0-2) and Moreland connected three pitches later.

Christian Vazquez also homered and Brandon Workman (1-1) went 1 2/3 scoreless innings for the Red Sox, who are 7-13 and trail the AL East-leading Rays by seven games. Ryan Brasier worked the ninth to pick up his fourth save.

The Rays are the last team in the majors to have consecutive losses this season. Castillo was also the loser in a 6-5, 11-inning loss to Baltimore on Thursday night.

After 20 games last season, the eventual World Series champion Red Sox (17-3) were 10 games up on Tampa Bay (7-13).

Daniel Robertson, mired in an 0 for 21 slide, had a two-run double during the sixth.

Betts, hitless in his previous 12 at-bats, doubled in the sixth and scored as the Red Sox grabbed a 4-2 lead when J.D. Martinez extended his hitting streak to nine games with an RBI single.

Brandon Lowe hit his fifth homer in the last nine games, a solo drive that just cleared the fence at the 322-foot mark down the right-field line in the second before Garcia's third-inning RBI triple as the Rays went up 2-0.

YANKEES 6, ROYALS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - CC Sabathia earned his first win of the season and Brett Gardner hit a two-run homer to help New York beat Kansas City.

Mike Tauchman also went deep and the Yankees got four solid innings from their bullpen to bounce back from a listless performance against the last-place Royals in the series opener.

Sabathia (1-0) did not allow an earned run over five innings, moving to 15-1 in the regular season following a Yankees loss since 2017. He gave up three hits, overcame four walks and finished with five strikeouts to leave him six shy of 3,000 for his career.

Luis Cessa permitted a run on back-to-back doubles by Hunter Dozier and Alex Gordon to begin the sixth, but pinned a runner at third base with consecutive strikeouts to end the inning. Adam Ottavino, Tommy Kahnle and Zack Britton closed with hitless relief in an intermittent rain.

Gardner gave New York a 2-1 lead in the third with his drive off Jakob Junis (1-2), making his first appearance at Yankee Stadium since July 26, when his fastball broke Aaron Judge's wrist. The right-hander dropped to 0-3 in the Bronx.

CUBS 5, DIAMONDBACKS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Kyle Hendricks struck out a season-high 11 over seven scoreless innings in his first win to lead Chicago over Arizona.

Hendricks (1-3) became the third consecutive Cubs starter to go seven innings without allowing a run after Jose Quintana and Cole Hamels did it in back-to-back shutouts against Miami. The right-hander gave up three hits and two walks after losing his first three starts.

The Cubs went 31 innings without allowing a run, matching their longest streak since July 1976, before Brad Brach gave up an RBI double to Ketel Marte with one out in the ninth.

Kris Bryant drove in two runs with a wind-aided, bases-loaded double in the second. He also singled and scored in a two-run sixth.

Anthony Rizzo hit an RBI triple in the fourth as the Cubs chased a wild Merrill Kelly (1-2). Willson Contreras added two hits, including an RBI single against Matt Koch in the sixth.

The Diamondbacks had won four in a row.

PIRATES 4, GIANTS 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Jordan Lyles cruised through six innings before taking a line drive off his pitching hand, Starling Marte and Erik Gonzalez were also pulled following a collision in the field, and short-handed Pittsburgh beat San Francisco.

Lyles (0-2) continued his hot start, striking out six and allowing four hits while dropping his ERA to a major league-best 0.53. He was removed with a bruised right hand after being struck by Joe Panik's line drive in the sixth.

Marte and Gonzalez collided in the eighth. Marte charged from center on a softly hit ball by Yangervis Solarte and slammed into the shortstop Gonzalez. Gonzalez walked off on his own power. Marte was able to stand briefly, but the team insisted he ride in a cart off the field.

Pittsburgh got all of its runs against Madison Bumarner (1-3) in the first inning. Francisco Cervelli had a two-run double, and Pablo Reyes and JB Shuck added RBI singles. Cervelli ended an 0-for-24 skid.

Bumgarner allowed just two more hits over his final five innings. He struck out seven. Felipe Vazquez struck out the side in the ninth for his sixth save.

WHITE SOX 7, TIGERS 3

DETROIT (AP) - Yoan Moncada hit a mammoth home run in the first inning, and Chicago scored five runs in the seventh inning to break the game open and beat Detroit.

Carlos Rodon (3-2) allowed a run and three hits in six innings for Chicago, which was without manager Rick Renteria and shortstop Tim Anderson, who were serving suspensions for their actions during Wednesday's bench-clearing fracas against Kansas City.

Detroit manager Ron Gardenhire didn't make it to the end of the game either. He was ejected in the fifth inning for having words with plate umpire Todd Tichenor after Tigers starter Jordan Zimmermann (0-3) walked in a run to give the White Sox a 2-1 lead.

Josh Harrison, Grayson Greiner and Niko Goodrum homered for Detroit's three runs. Moncada's drive in the first stood out, traveling 458 feet.

Zimmermann walked four, one shy of his career high, and allowed five runs in 6 1/3 innings.

MARLINS 3, NATIONALS 2

MIAMI (AP) -Miami snapped a four-game losing streak by scoring runs on an error, a walk and a hit batsman in a win over Washington.

Miami totaled just six hits and went 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position. But pinch-hitter Martin Prado's bases-loaded walk in the sixth put the Marlins ahead for the first time since Saturday, and they won after being shut out in the past two games.

Caleb Smith (2-0) struck out eight and allowed one run in six innings. He won his second start in a row and lowered his ERA to 2.35.

Three relievers completed a six-hitter. Sergio Romo pitched a perfect ninth for his second save, and his first since March 31 as Miami (5-15) won a series opener for the first time.

Anibal Sanchez (0-2) allowed three runs in 5 1/3 innings.

Washington's Anthony Rendon doubled to extend his hitting streak to 17 games, longest in the majors this year. Teammate Brian Dozier hit his second homer.

ASTROS 7, RANGERS 2

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Jose Altuve and Alex Bregman homered on consecutive pitches in the first inning and Justin Verlander pitched seven solid innings in Houston's win over Texas.

George Springer doubled twice and had one of Houston's four doubles in a three-run fifth inning.

Verlander (3-0) limited the Rangers to one run and three hits over seven innings. He struck out eight and walked three.

Danny Santana hit a solo homer in the sixth for the Rangers, whose four-game winning streak had been the longest in the American League. Joey Gallo launched a towering solo homer in the ninth that measured 442 feet.

Drew Smyly (0-2) struck out eight but walked three and allowed four runs while throwing 102 pitches in his 3 2/3 innings.

DODGERS 5, BREWERS 3

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Enrique Hernandez lined a three-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning and Los Angeles extended its winning streak to six games with the win over Milwaukee.

Hernandez's home run, his fifth of the season, came on an 0-2 pitch from Brewers closer Josh Hader (0-1), who surrendered two walks in the inning.

Five Dodgers relievers combined to limit Milwaukee to one run over the final 4 1/3 innings. Pedro Baez (1-1) got the win and Kenley Jensen got the last three outs for his seventh save.

Christian Yelich lofted a 408-foot homer into the second deck in right, his major league-leading 11th of the season.

Eric Thames hit a solo homer in the bottom of the eighth.

METS 5, CARDINALS 4

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Rookie Pete Alonso hit his seventh home run, Robinson Cano added three hits and New York edged St. Louis.

Mets closer Edwin Diaz retired Yadier Molina on a flyball with runners at the corners for the final out.

Lane Thomas hit a two-run homer in his first major league plate appearance. He became the 10th player in St. Louis franchise history to homer in his first career at-bat.

Mets starter Jason Vargas allowed one run on three hits in four innings. Seth Lugo (1-0) took over and got the win despite giving up two runs in two innings. Robert Gsellman escaped a first-and-third, one-out jam in the eighth.

Adam Wainwright (1-2) allowed three earned runs on eight hits and three walks before being lifted in the fourth inning.

BLUE JAYS 5, ATHLETICS 1

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Marcus Stroman struck out six and pitched into the ninth, Brandon Drury homered, and Toronto beat Oakland to snap a seven-game losing streak in the series.

Stroman (1-3) allowed six hits and one run with two walks for his first victory of the season despite a 1.99 ERA coming into his fifth start.

Danny Jansen hit a two-run double in the second that put the Blue Jays up for good.

The A's went ahead 1-0 in the first on Matt Chapman's double, then Stroman shut them down.

Oakland starter Aaron Brooks (2-2) allowed five runs on six hits in five innings, struck out five and walked two.

Slugger Khris Davis went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts after receiving a new contract from the A's that adds $33.75 million and runs through 2021.

Saturday?s 6-pack

Some early point spreads for NFL games this fall:
? Week 2: Browns (-2.5) @ Jets
? Week 4: Cowboys @ Saints (-.5.5)
? Week 7: Patriots (-6) @ Jets
? Week 8: Packers @ Chiefs (-6)
? Week 14: Chiefs @ Patriots (-2.5)
? Week 15: Colts @ Saints (-3.5)

Quote of the Day
?They didn?t like the Gary Sanchez thing with the Home Run Derby, but you can?t fix stupid, you know??
Logan Morrison, back in April 2018, talking about baseball fans in the Bronx. Morrison signed a minor league deal with the Bronx Bombers this week

Saturday?s quiz

Four of the top five picks in the 1989 NFL Draft are Hall of Famers (Troy Aikman, Barry Sanders, Derrick Thomas, Deion Sanders); Tony Mandarich was the #2 pick that year, an offensive lineman from Michigan State. Which team drafted Mandarich?

Friday?s quiz
Al Pacino coached the Miami Sharks in Any Given Sunday.

Thursday?s quiz
Miami Marlins have won two World Series; they?ve never won the NL East.

*************************************

Saturday?s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind??.

13) Oakland Raiders sent their scouts home for the weekend; they?re not expected to be back before the draft next weekend. Supposedly, Raiders? hierarchy (Gruden) doesn?t trust all his people, but doesn?t know exactly who he doesn?t trust. 🙂

Apparently this isn?t all that unusual; Gil Brandt told a story this week from 1987, where they told one scout about this LB they want to draft (they didn?t really want to). Two days later, a writer in Dallas posts this article about how the Cowboys are going to take the LB, which outed the scout as a leaker. He then became an ex-scout.

12) Other former front office guys have been saying on Twitter this week that the last 8-10 years, teams have been limiting access to a team?s draft board to only the top 3-4 football people.

11) Blue Jays are calling up top prospect Vladimir Guerrero Jr; he is expected to make his big league debut on Tuesday against the Giants.

10) College basketball is getting to the point where any returning player who scored double figures for a low-to-mid major is getting poached by bigger schools. Norfolk State?s leading scorer entered the transfer portal the week; it makes handicapping during the season that much harder. Will the new player fit in? How much does his departure hurt his former team?

Can?t be much fun for guys who coach in low/mid-majors.

9) Was reading something this week about how they?re using major league baseballs at the AAA level for the first time this year, and home runs have spiked early in the season. Homers in the International League are up 39%; in the Pacific Coast League, 32%.

Same thing hasn?t happened in AA or A ball, so it makes you wonder??

8) San Antonio Spurs? Derrick White played three years of D-II ball at Colorado?Colorado Springs, transferred and played his senior year for the Colorado Buffaloes; he had zero D-I scholarship offers out of high school. None.

This year, he played 25.8 mpg for the Spurs, scored 9.9 ppg. He scored 36 points in the Spurs? Game 3 win over Denver Thursday. Good for him.

7) Baseball transactions:
? Red Sox put IF Eduardo N??ez (back) on IL.
? Padres put OF Manuel Margot on the paternity list, called up Jose Pirela.
? Mets put Jacob deGrom (elbow) on the IL.

6) NCAA relaxed some transfer rules for freshmen: Incoming freshmen who enroll in summer school and receive financial aid can transfer and play immediately without a waiver if their coach leaves prior to the first day of fall classes.

This involves situations where a coach gets fired late in the spring or in summer, like couple years ago when Ohio State fired Thad Matta. It does not include football players who are early enrollees.

5) Not sure what the wisdom of the four outfielder shift is; seems like having four infielders would be a better idea. Lot of the guys you use the four OF shift with, if they hit it in the air to the outfield, it is going over the fence anyway.

4) Former UNLV coach Marvin Menzies signed on to be an assistant coach for Dan Majerle at Grand Canyon University in the WAC.

3) Mets? ace Jacob deGrom will have an MRI on his elbow Monday, which is bad news for the Mets and worse news for my fantasy team.

I mentioned a few days ago how deGrom had trouble putting hitters away in his last two starts, and this is probably a big reason why.

2) Draft trivia; Kyler Murray?s father Kevin was the 11th player taken in the 1982 baseball draft, one spot after Bill Ripken (Cal?s brother).

1) Nick Saban will have hip replacement surgery on Monday; can?t imagine he?d be much fun to have as a patient in the hospital. Good luck to all the nurses??..

LEADING OFF: DeGrom ailing, Swihart's new start, when Vlad?
April 19, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

BOUR BLUNDER

Angels slugger Justin Bour looks to improve his baserunning after yet another blunder on the bags. He failed to run out a popup in a tie game in the eighth, and the Mariners alertly let the ball and turned it into an easy, inning-ending double play. Seattle wound up winning 5-3.

''There's no excuse for it. It's terrible,'' Bour said.

Last Saturday at Wrigley Field, Bour singled in the first inning and tried to advance on an overthrow. Bour lumbered toward second, slid in and was called safe. But convinced he was out, he simply left the base and began walking back to the dugout, and was tagged by the Cubs' Javier Baez halfway between second and first.

CHECK HIM

Mets ace Jacob deGrom will have an MRI on his right elbow after the NL Cy Young Award said his arm has felt sore. DeGrom is leaving the team in St. Louis to get examined back in New York, and the team is putting him on the injured list.

''We're not sure what it is,'' manager Mickey Callaway said.

The 30-year-old deGrom, who had Tommy John surgery in 2010, began this season with two dominant outings. But he lost his last two starts while allowing a total of nine runs on 13 hits - including five homers - and five walks in nine innings.

DeGrom signed a $137.5 million, five-year contract right before opening day.

NEW HOME

Blake Swihart gets a chance to jump-start his career after Boston traded the catcher to Arizona. The 27-year-old was cut by the Red Sox this week after going 6 for 26 in 12 games.

Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen worked in player development and amateur scouting with Boston when Swihart was selected in the first round of the 2011 draft. Swihart became one of the team's top prospects, but his offensive production hasn't matched the hype.

NUMBERS GAME

Oakland slugger Khris Davis goes into the game against Toronto with a .247 batting average after an 0-for-4 night. This is familiar territory for Davis - he's finished at exactly .247 in each of the last four seasons.

NOT SO FRIENDLY

Zack Greinke has posted a win at every current National League ballpark except one. The Diamondbacks star will try make it a clean sweep when he starts at Wrigley Field. Greinke is 0-2 with an 8.31 ERA in five starts at the Friendly Confines.

Yu Darvish (1-2, 6.11) starts for the Cubs and goes for his second straight victory.

HOW SOON?

Still no word on when super prospect Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will make his major league debut for Toronto, but it could be real soon. He is 7 for 17 with two homers, six RBIs and no strikeouts in five games for Triple-A Buffalo.

The son of a Hall of Famer, Vladdy Jr. batted .381 with a combined 50 extra-base hits at four levels in the minors last year.

''I don't know when he's coming, I really don't,'' Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo said before his team opened a weekend series at Oakland.

''We have the No. 1 prospect in baseball and it will be pretty cool when he gets here,'' he said.

Judge hurts oblique as Yanks beat Royals
April 20, 2019
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) All-Star slugger Aaron Judge hurt his left oblique while taking a swing and was expected to head to the injured list as the already banged-up New York Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals 9-2 Saturday.

Judge homered early, but hurt himself in the sixth inning while hitting a single. He was taken to a hospital for an MRI and further tests.

Judge winced after taking a swing in the sixth and gingerly made his way to first base. He left the game after being checked by a trainer.

The Yankees, who began the game with 12 players on the injured list, hit four home runs. Judge connected in the first, Clint Frazier had a solo drive in the second and Mike Tauchman and DJ LeMahieu homered on consecutive pitches in the fourth.

Judge and Frazier hit their fifth homers of the season in the opening two innings off Heath Fillmyer (0-1).

Masahiro Tanaka (2-1) pitched seven innings of one-run ball.

Chris Owings homered in the ninth for Kansas City.

BREWERS 5, DODGERS 0

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Christian Yelich hit two home runs, pushing his major league-leading total to 13, and Chase Anderson pitched five strong innings in a spot start in Milwaukee's win over Los Angeles.

Ryan Braun added a three-run homer for the Brewers, who snapped a three-game losing streak.

The Brewers, who ended the Dodgers' six-game winning streak, got on the board in the third when Yelich hit a solo homer with two out off Hyun-Jin Ryu (2-1). With that homer, Yelich broke the franchise record for home runs in March and April, set by Eric Thames in 2017. His second came in the sixth inning, and his 13 homers in the first month of the season matched the franchise record for homers in a month, set by Prince Fielder in May 2007.

Anderson (2-0) allowed a single to open the game and then retired 15 of the next 17 batters before being lifted for a pinch hitter. He walked two batters and struck out five.

Alex Claudio, Junior Guerra and Matt Albers combined to pitch four innings of one-hit relief.

INDIANS 8, BRAVES 4, GAME 1

BRAVES 8, INDIANS 7, GAME 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - Corey Kluber working seven solid innings and Carlos Santana celebrated his U.S. citizenship with three hits, as Cleveland topped Atlanta in the opener of a doubleheader.

Kluber (2-2) shook off a rough first inning and allowed four runs and five hits. He didn't get out of the third inning in his previous start.

Max Moroff homered and had two RBIs for Cleveland. Greg Allen hit a run-scoring double off starter Julio Teheran (2-2) and the Indians scored six runs in the fifth - all with two outs.

Brian McCann and Matt Joyce hit back-to-back homers off Kluber in the seventh. The Braves, who have lost four in a row, had just six hits.

In the second game, Ronald Acuna Jr.'s two-run double highlighted Atlanta's five-run rally in the ninth inning as the Braves stormed back to gain a split.

The Braves trailed 7-0 after two innings but chipped away late and stopped a four-game losing streak.

Acuna ripped his double to left on the second pitch from Cody Anderson, who was seeking his first big league save. The Braves also got a two-run single by Ozzie Albies and a bases-loaded walk to Freddie Freeman in the inning before Acuna came through after going hitless in his previous six at-bats.

Luke Jackson (2-0) pitched the eighth, and A.J. Minter struck out the side in the ninth for his second save.

The Indians welcomed back All-Star Francisco Lindor, who finally made his season debut. Lindor returned after missing 19 games with an ankle injury, and went 1 for 5 with a run scored.

DIAMONDBACKS 6, CUBS 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Zack Greinke pitched three-hit ball over six innings and was backed by three home runs as Arizona won for the fifth time in six games.

Greinke (3-1) won for the third time in four starts.

Taylor Clarke worked the final three innings for a save in his major league debut, allowing one hit and preserving Arizona's first shutout since last Sept. 19.

Eduardo Escobar and David Peralta hit back-to-back solo homers against Yu Darvish (1-3) in the first. John Ryan Murphy capped a three-run sixth with a two-run homer.

Christian Walker had a career-high four hits.

Darvish allowed three runs and five hits in five innings.

RED SOX 6, RAYS 5

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Andrew Benintendi hit a grand slam and a tiebreaking ninth-inning sacrifice fly and catcher Christian Vazquez picked off Tommy Pham for the final out as Boston won a series for the first time this season.

Boston had lost four of its first six series and split the other two during a 6-13 start, its worst since 1996.

Rick Porcello gave up two runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings, Matt Barnes (2-0) won after allowing Yandy Diaz's tying home run leading off the eighth, and Ryan Brasier got his fifth save in six

Boston went ahead in the ninth against Jose Alvarado (0-1) after Jackie Bradley Jr. singled leading off. Michael Chivas doubled, and Benintendi followed with his go-ahead fly.

Tampa Bay had won its first six series of the season. The Red Sox won consecutive games for just the second time this year.

MARLINS 9, NATIONALS 3

MIAMI (AP) - Curtis Granderson homered and Miami busted out at the plate after changing hitting coaches, roughing up ace Max Scherzer in beating Washington to win a series for the first time this season.

Brian Anderson doubled twice and the Marlins finished with 11 hits in their first game under new batting coach Jeff Livesey.

Nationals slugger Anthony Rendon had his 17-game hitting streak halted when he left after being hit by a pitch on the left elbow in the third inning.

Miguel Rojas and Starlin Castro each had two hits for the Marlins.

Scherzer (1-3) struck out nine and allowed 11 hits and six earned runs in 5 1/3 innings.

Jose Urena (1-3) allowed three runs and eight hits in six innings with four strikeouts and one walk. Three relievers combined to strike out seven over the final three innings for Miami.

CARDINALS 10, METS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Miles Mikolas tossed eight stellar innings and drove in two runs, leading St. Louis over New York.

Jose Martinez had three hits and three RBIs and Paul Goldschmidt hit his eighth home run for St. Louis.

Mikolas (2-1) became the first St. Louis pitcher to record an out in the seventh inning this season. He allowed two runs and four hits.

Chris Flexen (0-1) surrendered six runs and on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Goldschmidt hit a 464 foot solo home run off Paul Sewald in the eighth inning.

Cardinals third baseman Matt Carpenter left the game after the sixth inning with a bruised left knee. He appeared to foul a ball off himself, but stayed in and drew a walk, then scored a run and exited.

TWINS 6, ORIOLES 5, GAME 1

TWINS 16, ORIOLES 7, GAME 2

BALTIMORE (AP) - Eddie Rosario homered twice for a second straight game, Byron Buxton hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the sixth inning and Minnesota beat Baltimore in the opener of a doubleheader.

Rosario also doubled and made a leaping catch at the wall to take away an extra-base hit from Chris Davis. Willians Astudillo went deep for the Twins.

Dwight Smith Jr., Renato Nunez and Pedro Severino homered for the Orioles in the makeup of a game postponed by rain on Friday.

Minnesota took a 6-3 lead with a three-run sixth against Jimmy Yacabonis (1-1).

Taylor Rogers struck out the side in the ninth for his second save.

Jose Berrios (3-1) gave up all three Baltimore home runs but made it through six innings, allowing four runs, eight hits and three walks.

In the second game, the Twins routed Baltimore with eight homers, matching their single-game mark set on Aug. 29, 1963, against Washington.

Former Oriole Jonathan Schoop, Nelson Cruz and Mitch Garver each had two homers.

Cruz and C.J. Cron connected in the first inning off Alex Cobb (0-1).

Martin Perez (2-0) gave up four runs in six innings for the Twins, who have won eight straight over Baltimore since falling on opening day last season.

BLUE JAYS 10, ATHLETICS 1

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Rowdy Tellez and Brandon Drury hit back-to-back homers in a five-run fourth inning and Justin Smoak also homered as Toronto won for the fifth time in six games on its road trip.

Toronto pitcher Matt Shoemaker injured his left knee in a rundown chase in the third inning.

Toronto's training staff was summoned again after just seven pitches by Shoemaker's replacement, Sam Gaviglio. Gaviglio (2-0) was checked out and remained in the game, throwing four scoreless innings to win.

Tellez homered off A's starter Mike Fiers (2-2) after Smoak and Teoscar Hernandez opened the fourth with consecutive singles. Two pitches later, Drury connected.

Tellez and Drury teamed up again in the fifth with back-to-back doubles that made it 7-0. Smoak hit a two-run homer off Ryan Buchter in the sixth.

PIRATES 3, GIANTS 1, 5 INNINGS

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Cole Tucker hit a two-run homer in his major league debut and Pittsburgh beat San Francisco in a game shortened to five innings because of rain.

Tucker, a first-round pick in the 2014 draft, sent a pitch from Derek Holland (1-3) a projected 431 feet into the bushes beyond the center field wall with two outs in the fifth inning to put the Pirates in front.

Jung Ho Kang hit his third home run for Pittsburgh, which has won a season-high five straight. Bryan Reynolds, called up from Triple-A Indianapolis, added a single in his first big league game. Jameson Taillon (1-2) allowed one run and four hits with a walk and three strikeouts to earn his first victory in five starts this season.

Steven Duggar had an RBI single for the Giants, who have lost four straight and five of six.

The game was called after a delay of 3 hours, 8 minutes.

RANGERS 9, ASTROS 4

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Joey Gallo hit another long home run, Asdrubal Cabrera accounted for five runs and Texas beat Houston.

Gerrit Cole (1-3) needed 43 pitches to get through a five-run first inning and didn't get the first out until a called third strike against Gallo with the bases loaded on his 32nd pitch. The right-hander struck out eight, but allowed nine runs over 4 1/3 innings.

Cabrera had three RBIs with a two-run single in the first and a run-scoring single in the fifth. He also scored twice.

Shawn Kelly (3-0) worked 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of Adrian Sampson, who allowed hits to the first four batters in the fifth.

Max Stassi and George Springer homered for the Astros, who lost for the second time in 13 games.

PHILLIES 8, ROCKIES 5

DENVER (AP) - Bryce Harper hit a three-run homer, Andrew McCutchen also connected as Philadelphia beat Colorado.

Phil Gosselin drove in three big runs to back scuffling Phillies ace Aaron Nola (2-0). Hector Neris got five outs for his third save.

Gosselin started at shortstop after Jean Segura (left hamstring strain) and Scott Kingery (right hamstring strain) were placed on the 10-day injured list earlier in the day. The backup came through for the banged-up Phillies, delivering a three-run double off Antonio Senzatela (1-1) in the fourth inning to give them a 4-3 lead.

Charlie Blackmon homered for the second straight game and finished with four hits. Raimel Tapia hit an inside-the-park home run for Colorado, which had its five-game winning streak snapped.

REDS 4, PADRES 2

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Luis Castillo matched a season high with nine strikeouts and Jesse Winker added a pinch-hit homer as Cincinnati extended San Diego's losing streak to six games.

The Reds won their third straight after arriving in San Diego mired in a four-game losing streak.

Raisel Iglesias got the last three outs for his fourth save.

Eric Lauer (2-3) pitched five innings, giving up three runs and six hits, with two walks. Lauer struck out five and lost for the third time in four starts.
