Quote of the Day
?We didn?t count velocity; we just counted outs.?
Jim Kaat, talking about his playing days

Sunday?s quiz
Which NFL team drafted Eli Manning?

Saturday?s quiz
Four of the top five picks in the 1989 NFL Draft are Hall of Famers (Troy Aikman, Barry Sanders, Derrick Thomas, Deion Sanders); Tony Mandarich was the #2 pick that year, an offensive lineman from Michigan State. Green Bay drafted Mandarich.

Friday?s quiz
Al Pacino coached the Miami Sharks in Any Given Sunday.

****************************

Sunday?s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday??..

13) Twins-Orioles broadcast Saturday was great; Jim Kaat, Bert Blyleven were the analysts and it was educational. Play-by-play guy described the action on the field then got out of the way and let the two experts talk. Good stuff.

Kaat was saying how much harder batters work now before the game, and he referenced Aaron Judge going on the IL Saturday with an oblique strain. It is possible to overtrain.

12) Auburn?s Chuma Okeke tore his ACL during the NCAA tournament, but he is entering the NBA Draft anyway, not really sure why. You?d think he?d stay in school, use the school?s facilities to strenghten/rehab his knee, then go into the ?20 draft. We?ll see how this works out for him.

11) Advice from Bucky Brooks, former NFL player and scout:

?If you?re a HS football player who isn?t playing baseball in the Spring, you SHOULD run track for your school. Speed is such an important part of being a top-notch football player. Learning how to run and compete on the track carries over onto the field.. Dare to be great..?

10) Interesting trivia on this year?s NFL schedule:
? NFL?s Senior VP of broadcasting Howard Katz is one of the people who makes the NFL schedule every year.
? Philadelphia Eagles are only NFL team that plays three straight weeks on road this year.
? Katz and Eagles? coach Doug Pedersen are next-door neighbors.

Part of the reason the Eagles are on road for three straight weeks in October is that the Phillies are expected to be World Series contenders, and the NFL didn?t want any conflicts between Eagle/Phillies games, seeing how they share parking areas.

9) Miami Marlins fired hitting coach Mike Pagliarulo after 20 games; it ain?t his fault Miami has a bad team. Marlins fired hitting coach Frank Menechino after last season; what they need to do is find an owner who is willing to spend money on ballplayers.

Two years ago, Miami?s outfield was Yelich-Ozuna-Stanton, then the team was sold and the new geniuses who are in charge traded the three of them for three piles of crap. No bueno.

8) Keldon Johnson scored 13.5 ppg this year as a freshman at Kentucky; he is projected by one draft guru to be picked 17th in June?s NBA Draft.

Johnson was seen in Hollywood this week driving a $300,000 McLaren 720S Spider; until watching a Showtime special a few weeks ago, I had no idea that there were cars that cost so much money. Wish the young man well in his NBA career, but someone might want to teach him money management skills before it is too late.

Last year?s NBA rookie salary scale paid the #17 pick a total of $6,358,500 for his first three years in the league. Taxes eat half of that, agent takes another 3%, so he?s down to $2,988,495 before he starts.

Donte DiVincenzo was the #17 pick LY; he played 15.2 mpg, scored 4.9 ppg, so he?s no lock for a second contract in the league when the time comes. The second contract is the key; thats where guys establish themselves in the NBA. Then they can buy the $300,000 car.

7) Baseball injuries:
? New York put Aaron Judge (oblique) on IL.
? Red Sox put P Nathan Eovaldi (elbow) on IL.
? Pirates put 2B Erik Gonzalez (clavicle), CF Starling Marte (abdomen) on IL.
? Phillies put SS Jean Segura (hamstring), P Victor Arano (elbow) on IL.

6) Former Georgia/Miami football coach Mark Richt will be an analyst on the new ACC Network starting this fall.

5) There is a high school football stadium in Jacksonville, TX called the Tomato Bowl.

4) On April 12, CG Technology took these two futures bets:
? Jaguars for $4,000 at 45-1, to win $180,000
? Titans for $2,000 at 85-1, to win $170,000

Long time to let the books hold your money; will odds change that much between now and before the preseason games start this summer?

3) Giants have apparently talked about trading for Arizona QB Josh Rosen, but don?t want to give up either one of their first round picks (6th, 17th picks) in this draft.

Rosen was the 2nd player taken in last year?s draft, so if you won?t give up a first round pick for him now, then you really don?t want him.

2) From Henry Schulman: Since 1912, the longest a team has gone to start a season without scoring a first-inning run is 28 games. Giants are at 22 games and counting thru Saturday.

1) 76ers 112 (-3.5), Nets 108? Philly hit two foul shots with 0:06 left to cover the spread; if you had Brooklyn +3.5, this was a bad beat. Embiid had 31 points, 16 rebounds for Philly.

L.A.'s Pujols ties Babe Ruth in career RBI
April 20, 2019
By The Associated Press

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Los Angeles Angels slugger Albert Pujols has tied Babe Ruth for fifth place in baseball history with his 1,992nd career RBI.

Pujols drove home Andrelton Simmons with a double off Seattle's Yusei Kikuchi in the third inning Saturday night.

The Angel Stadium crowd gave a standing ovation to Pujols, who acknowledged the cheers on second base with a wave of his helmet.

Pujols only tied Ruth according to baseball's official starting point for the mark. RBIs weren't an official statistic until 1920, and Ruth's career began in 1914 with the Boston Red Sox.

Pujols is also closing in on Lou Gehrig (1,994) and Barry Bonds (1,996) on the career RBI chart. Hank Aaron (2,297) and Alex Rodriguez (2,086) lead the list.

LEADING OFF: Yanks star Judge hurt, Cubs ace Lester close
April 20, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Sunday:

A BENCH FOR THIS JUDGE

The New York Yankees are expected to put All-Star slugger Aaron Judge on the injured list, a day after he hurt his left oblique taking a swing against Kansas City.

The Yankees already had a dozen players out, including Giancarlo Stanton, Luis Severino, Gary Sanchez, Miguel Andujar and Aaron Hicks, before Judge was set to join them on the IL.

Judge has five home runs and is batting .288 with 11 RBIs. The right fielder has played in every game this season.

GETTING CLOSE

Cubs ace Jon Lester could be close to rejoining the rotation after throwing 45 pitches in a simulated game Saturday. He's been out with a strained left hamstring.

Manager Joe Maddon said Lester looked ''very good'' and the team will see how he feels before determining the next step. Maddon did not rule out a return for a three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Wrigley Field that starts Tuesday.

UNTIL OCTOBER?

Clayton Kershaw makes his second start of the year for the Dodgers as they wrap up their seven-game season series against hot-hitting Christian Yelich and the Brewers. Los Angeles beat Milwaukee in Game 7 of the 2018 NL Championship Series to win its second consecutive pennant, and both teams are expected to contend again. Kershaw allowed two runs in seven innings with six strikeouts Monday against Cincinnati. The three-time Cy Young Award winner had been bothered by left shoulder inflammation in spring training.

NIGHT MOVES

A pair of 2018 division winners square off in prime time as the Braves and Indians complete their interleague series at Cleveland. Left-hander Max Fried (2-0, 0.92 ERA) pitches for Atlanta against Shane Bieber (2-0, 1.71) in a matchup of promising youngsters. Bieber was born in 1995, the same year the Braves beat the Indians in the World Series. All-Star shortstop Francisco Lindor is expected to play again after making his season debut for Cleveland in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. Lindor had been sidelined since spraining his left ankle while running the bases near the end of spring training as he was rehabbing a right calf sprain.

CLOSE TO HOME

When the Astros finish their second three-game series already this season at Texas, they will have played as many games at Globe Life Park in Arlington as they have at Minute Maid Park in Houston. They are 6-0 at home. Collin McHugh (3-1, 1.96 ERA) starts the series finale versus the Rangers. He made six relief appearances against them last year, tossing 9 2/3 scoreless innings.

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Tyler Glasnow, Tampa Bay Rays (4-0, 1.12 ERA, $405):
Perhaps the hottest pitcher in the majors, the 25-year-old right-hander still primarily relies on two pitches, fastballs and curveballs, but with his level of control this season he doesn't need much more than that. Glasnow has held opponents to an OBP of just .231 and has struck out 24 batters in 24 innings with just 3 walks.

Today Glasnow and the 14-7 Rays are -120 favorites at home against David Price and the disappointing Boston Red Sox.

SLUMPING

Shelby Miller, Texas Rangers (0-1, 9.00 ERA, $211):
Don't be fooled by the solid starter money that Miller has generated for bettors, Miller is having an awful start to his 2019 campaign. He has yet to stay on the mound for longer than four innings in any of his three starts this season, and has given up 16 hits, 11 walks and 10 earned runs in 10 innings.

Miller and the Rangers could have a hard time at home today against a dangerous Houston Astros lineup that is second in the big leagues in batting average at .274 and fourth in OPS at .819.

3 STRIKES

BATTLE OF PITCHERS IN PITTSBURGH

Pirates pitcher Chris Archer is finally looking like that guy we remember from his first few years in Tampa Bay. He has pitched to a 2.00 ERA with a 1.00 WHIP over his first four starts. There?s no reason to think he shouldn?t keep that up Sunday against a Giants lineup that ranks 28th in batting average, 29th in runs per game and dead last in OPS.

The Giants counter with Dereck Rodriguez who has allowed just three runs on nine hits over his last two starts against the Nationals and Padres.

The Under is 13-5-1 in Rodriguez's last 19 starts, and 7-2-1 in the Giants last ten games overall. While the Pirates are 5-1 to the Under in their last six.

FRIARS FADING

Much like the Padres in general, Joey Lucchesi has cooled off after a hot start. The southpaw has been touched up for 12 runs on 14 hits in 11 innings over his last two starts. Lucchesi gets the ball Sunday afternoon in hopes of bouncing back and ending the Padres? six-game losing streak at the same time.

San Diego is currently a -140 home fave for Sunday?s series finale against the Reds. The Padres are just 17-37 in their last 54 home games but the Reds are just 1-7 in Tyler Mahle's last eight starts.

CUZ GOING UNDER

The White Sox-Tigers game this afternoon will have Phil Cuzzi officiating. All three games that Cuzzi has umpired this season have gone Under and he's called an average of 17.3 strikeouts per game compared to just 4.7 walks per game.

The Under has hit in five of Chicago's last seven games overall and 8 of Detroit's last 11 games when Daniel Norris has gotten the start.

What?s the OU mean?

What?s the OU mean?

Diamond Trends - Sunday
April 21, 2019
By Vince Akins

SU Play ON Trend of the Day:

-- The Athletics are 17-0 SU off a game as a favorite in which they scored more runs off the bullpen than they did off the starter and it is not a series opener.

SU Play AGAINST Trend of the Day:

-- The Reds are 0-14 SU after a game as a road favorite in which they scored in more innings than their opponent.

Batter-Based Trend of the Day:

-- The Royals are 0-11 SU as a dog after a game in which Whit Merrifield hit a home run.

Starter-Based Trend of the Day:

-- The Dodgers are 0-11 OU with Clayton Kershaw on the road in April when they won in his last start, staying under by an average of 2.50 runs per game.

Dodgers 0-11 OU ? Is this saying take the under?

Great stuff btw

Red Sox complete sweep, close gap on AL East-leading Rays
April 21, 2019
By The Associated Press

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) Christian Vazquez hit a sacrifice fly in the 11th inning, and the Boston Red Sox completed an uplifting three-game sweep of the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays with a 4-3 victory Sunday.

Rafael Devers singled off Jose Alvarado (0-2) to start the 11th and went to second when Michael Chavis walked.

Both runners moved up a base on Jackie Bradley's sacrifice bunt and Vazquez followed with his fly that Kevin Kiermaier ran down in center field.

Marcus Walden (3-0) allowed an infield hit over two scoreless innings and Ryan Brasier worked the 11th to get his sixth save.

After starting the season by losing eight of 10, the defending World Series champions are 7-5 over the last 12 games and went from eight to five games behind the Rays.

DODGERS 6, BREWERS 5

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Cody Bellinger reached over the right field wall to rob Christian Yelich in the eighth inning of yet another home run, then hit a solo drive off Josh Hader with two outs in the ninth to lift Los Angeles over Milwaukee.

Bellinger connected for his 11th home run. On Friday night, the hard-throwing Hader (0-2) gave up a three-run homer to Enrique Hernandez in the eighth that led Los Angeles to a 5-3 win.

Joc Pederson hit two home runs, including a drive to begin the game, and tied a career high with four hits. He scored three times as the Dodgers won for the seventh time in eight games. They took three of four games at Miller Park.

Pinch hitter Eric Thames launched a three-run homer off Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen (2-0) with two outs in the eighth that made it 5-all.

YANKEES 7, ROYALS 6, 10 INNINGS

NEW YORK (AP) - Austin Romine drove in the winning run in the 10th inning with his third RBI single, and New York overcame a bullpen collapse that followed another scoreless start by James Paxton to beat Kansas City.

After adding All-Star slugger Aaron Judge to their ever-growing injury list, the Yankees escaped a couple late jams and got back over .500.

Jake Diekman (0-1) walked Mike Tauchman and Gio Urshela leading off the bottom of the 10th, and 23-year-old Thairo Estrada made his big league debut as a pinch hitter and sacrificed against Ian Kennedy.

Romine drove a fly that bounced on the center-field warning track for his first career walk-off hit.

Paxton allowed three hits and became only the second Yankees pitcher to strike out 12 or more in consecutive starts. He left with a 5-0 lead but the Royals went ahead with a surprising six-run eighth.

BRAVES 11, INDIANS 5

CLEVELAND (AP) - Josh Donaldson had two homers and four RBIs, Freddie Freeman added three hits and Atlanta pounded Cleveland's pitching for the second straight night.

Atlanta outscored Cleveland 19-5 over the final 14 innings of the three-game series. The Indians won the first game and led 7-0 after two innings in Game Two, but the Braves rallied for an 8-7 win.

Max Fried (3-0) allowed two runs in 6 1/3 innings. The left-hander walked the bases loaded in the first but retired Jason Kipnis on a flyball to end the inning.

Indians starter Shane Bieber (2-1) was charged with seven runs (five earned) in 2 1/3 innings.

RANGERS 11, ASTROS 10

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Joey Gallo had the first sacrifice fly of his career in his 1,337th plate appearance and matched his best with five RBIs, helping Shelby Miller get his first major league victory in two years as Texas held on to beat Houston.

The Astros hit five solo home runs after falling behind 10-1, including a pair from Carlos Correa and Josh Reddick in the eighth inning to get within three.

George Springer led off the ninth with the fifth Houston homer, this one off Texas closer Jose Leclerc, who was pulled after forcing in another run with four walks, capped by Jose Altuve as a pinch-hitter.

Shawn Kelley helped the Rangers avoid a complete collapse by striking out former Texas catcher Robinson Chirinos for his first save since 2017.

Miller (1-1) allowed homers on consecutive pitches to Alex Bregman and Michael Brantley in Houston's five-run sixth inning. The right-hander gave up five hits and four runs - three earned - in 5 1/3 innings.

Pence and Logan Forsythe homered on consecutive pitches in the third off Collin McHugh. The Houston right-hander (3-2) gave up 10 runs - nine earned - in 3 1/3 innings.

BLUE JAYS 5, ATHLETICS 4

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Justin Smoak got thrown out on a wild sequence that began with another sensational play by Oakland center fielder Ramon Laureano, but wound up with four hits in Toronto's victory.

Smoak homered to help Toronto post its first road sweep of at least three games since 2015 and cap a 6-1 trip for manager Charlie Montoyo's club. The Blue Jays went 1-5 on their first trip earlier this season.

Toronto's Aaron Sanchez was pulled after four innings because of a broken fingernail, a problem that has plagued him in the past.

A's starter Brett Anderson (3-1) sprained his left ankle coming off the mound trying to field Randal Grichuk's single in the third. Oakland was swept at home by Toronto for the first time since 1993 after winning all seven games against the Blue Jays last season.

Daniel Hudson (1-1) retired five batters. Ken Giles got four outs for his seventh save.

CARDINALS 6, METS 4

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Paul Goldschmidt drove in two runs and Noah Syndergaard had better luck at the plate than on the mound, hitting a homer with Dexter Fowler's help as St. Louis beat New York.

Syndergaard (1-2) allowed six runs, four earned, on eight hits in five innings, but his most memorable play came while batting in the fourth. He hit a deep flyball to center that Fowler leaped for on the warning track even though it was well below the fence. The ball deflected off Fowler's glove and over the fence for Syndergaard's fifth career homer and first since Aug. 16, 2016, at Arizona.

It was one of four homers on the day for the Mets, but that wasn't enough for Syndergaard, who has allowed at least five runs in his last two starts.

Dakota Hudson (1-1) allowed three runs on five hits in five innings, striking out five, for his first career victory as a starter.

ROCKIES 4, PHILLIES 1

DENVER (AP) - Jon Gray pitched six scoreless innings, Tony Wolters had a two-run double and Colorado beat Philadelphia for its sixth win in seven games.

Trevor Story and Ian Desmond also had RBI singles for the Rockies, who won three of four against the Phillies for their second series win of the season and first at home.

Bryce Harper drew a leadoff walk in the Washington eighth and has reached base safely in all 21 games to start the season.

Gray (2-3) allowed one hit in six innings - a double by Maikel Franco in the fourth. He struck out five and walked four in winning his second in a row after losing his first three decisions.

Jerad Eickhoff (0-1), making his first start of the season, allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings.

PADRES 4, REDS 3

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Austin Hedges homered and Wil Myers hit a go-ahead, two-run double in the four-run third inning for San Diego, which beat Cincinnati to snap a six-game losing streak.

Myers' double to left off Tyler Mahle gave the Padres their first lead in a week. They hadn't led since taking a 1-0 advantage in the first inning at Arizona on April 14 in a game they'd lose 8-4. They returned home and lost two to Colorado before dropping the first three games of this series.

The losing streak dropped the Padres from a three-game lead atop the NL West to second place, 2+ games behind Los Angeles.

Left-hander Joey Lucchesi (3-2) stopped the steak by holding the Reds to one run and five hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out eight and walked two. Kirby Yates pitched the ninth for his 10th save in as many chances.

Mahle (0-2) allowed four runs and seven hits in six innings, struck out nine and walked none.

CUBS 2, DIAMONDBACKS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - David Bote hit a game-ending RBI single in the ninth inning, and Chicago used a terrific performance by Tyler Chatwood to beat Arizona.

Led by Chatwood's six sparkling innings, Chicago carried a 1-0 lead into the ninth. But Jarrod Dyson hit a drive to right off Pedro Strop (1-1) with one out, tying it at 1.

The Cubs then got right to work against Archie Bradley (1-2) in the bottom half. Javier Baez led off with a double up the first base line and went to third when Adam Jones fumbled the ball in right.

After Willson Contreras was hit by a pitch, Bote hit a liner back up the middle for his fourth career game-ending RBI.

Chatwood allowed two hits in his first outing in 11 days.

Robbie Ray (0-2) was almost as good as Chatwood, allowing four hits in six innings in perhaps his best start so far this year.

ANGELS 8, MARINERS 6

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Tommy La Stella hit two home runs and Los Angeles held on against Seattle to end a six-game losing streak.

Kevan Smith and Brian Goodwin also homered and Mike Trout hit two doubles for the Angels, who avoided a four-game sweep in the series with the Mariners. Jaime Barria (2-1) gave up one run in five innings.

Seattle lost for the second time in 13 road games to start the season, with Mike Leake (2-2) giving up four runs on three homers in six innings.

The Mariners created tension in the ninth inning when Tom Murphy cracked a two-run homer with one out, Dee Gordon immediately followed it up with a solo home run to right, and Mitch Haniger hit a two-run homer with two outs. Cody Allen walked Domingo Santana to bring Edwin Encarnacion up as the potential tying run before Luis Garcia got him to pop up to end the game.

TWINS 4, ORIOLES 3

BALTIMORE (AP) - Kyle Gibson pitched six sharp innings, Willians Astudillo drove in two runs and Minnesota held off Baltimore for a three-game sweep.

After hitting 11 home runs in a doubleheader Saturday, the Twins used a different approach to secure their ninth straight victory over Baltimore. Minnesota failed to go deep, Nelson Cruz scored after being hit by a pitch and a botched fly ball led to a pair of unearned runs.

With closer Blake Parker ailing, Taylor Rogers gave up an RBI double to Jonathan Villar in the bottom of the ninth before securing his third save.

Gibson (1-0) gave up two runs and five hits, walked none and struck out six. The right-hander retired the last eight batters he faced.

Baltimore starter Dylan Bundy (0-3) allowed four runs, two earned, and seven hits in six innings.

TIGERS 4, WHITE SOX 3

DETROIT (AP) - Daniel Norris struck out six batters in five innings to earn his first win in two years and help Detroit beat Chicago.

Norris (1-0) allowed two hits and walked one, earning his first victory since Sept. 28, 2017, and Gordon Beckham homered against his former team as the Tigers won two of three in the series.

Shane Greene had a perfect ninth inning to earn his 10th save in 10 tries for Detroit.

In his Tigers debut, first baseman Brandon Dixon had an RBI single in the second inning, scoring Jeimer Candelario, who tripled.

White Sox right-hander Reynaldo Lopez (1-3) had eight strikeouts in six innings, but allowed seven hits and two earned runs.

NATIONALS 5, MARLINS 0

MIAMI (AP) - Stephen Strasburg dominated his favorite foil, striking out 11 and allowing two hits in eight innings to help Washington avert a series sweep.

Ryan Zimmerman hit two solo home runs, and Brian Dozier also had a solo homer.

Strasburg (2-1) improved to 18-7 in 32 career starts versus the Marlins. He has won his past nine decisions against them, and has more victories over Miami than against any other team.

The Marlins were shut out for the sixth time. They loaded the bases in the ninth thanks to two walks and an infield single before Sean Doolittle retired Miguel Rojas to complete a three-hitter.

Trevor Richards (0-3) allowed three runs in 6 1/3 innings and was a bit unlucky. Homers by Zimmerman and Dozier were pulled down the left field line and barely cleared the fence.

GIANTS 3, PIRATES 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Buster Posey snapped the longest homerless drought of his career with a three-run shot and tagged out Pittsburgh's Jung Ho Kang at the plate for the final out.

Posey sent a fastball from Chris Archer (1-1) just over the fence in center field with one out in the fifth to give the Giants the lead. The home run was the first for the six-time All-Star catcher since he went deep against the Miami Marlins on June 19, 2018, a span of 237 at-bats.

Posey's homer was just enough for San Francisco to end Pittsburgh's five-game winning streak. Derek Rodriguez (3-2) allowed two runs on three hits in 5 2/3 innings to win his second straight start, striking out four and walking one.

Will Smith earned his fifth save of the season with some help from his defense. Kang was on first with two outs after reaching on a fielder's choice when Bryan Reynolds laced a double to the right-field corner. Third base coach Joey Cora waved Kang home, but the relay throw from second baseman Joe Panik to Posey beat Kang by a good two steps.

Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

? Celtics 110, Pacers 106? Boston sweeps series, 4-0.

? Warriors 113, Clippers 105? Klay Thompson had 27 points at the half.

? Trailblazers 111, Thunder 98? Russell Westbrook was 5-21 from the floor.

? Sharks 2, Golden Knights 1 (2 OT)? Game 7 is Tuesday in San Jose.

? Bruins 4, Maple Leafs 2? Game 7 is Tuesday in Boston.

? Nets? GM Sean Marks was suspended one game without pay, fined $25,000 for entering the refs? locker room after Brooklyn?s 112-108 loss Saturday.

**********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend??

13) Philadelphia Eagles? center Travis Kelce played LY with a broken foot, something he called a ?torn elbow? (he wore a big brace), and a Grade 2 MCL tear.

Toronto pitcher Aaron Sanchez left Sunday?s game in Oakland with a broken right fingernail on the middle finger of his pitching hand.

12) Jim Kaat and Bert Blyleven discussed pitching all weekend on Twins? TV; Kaat said Sunday he thinks the strike zone is much tighter now than when he pitched.

Blyleven mentioned that back when he pitched, umpires weren?t graded on each pitch by MLB and that has changed how the game is called.

11) Twins hit 11 home runs in their doubleheader sweep of the Orioles Saturday. Hard to believe Baltimore was in the playoffs only three years ago; their team is awful.

Baltimore?s AAA farm team is 7-10, their AA team is 3-13 and got shut out in both ends of a twin bill Saturday, so not sure where the Orioles? help is going to come from.

10) Indianapolis Colts? owner Jim Irsay recently spent $718,750 for the piano John Lennon used to write songs for Sergeant Pepper?s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

9) They run a commercial on Colorado Rockies games for University of Colorado health services; it shows an older fellow who struggles to get out of his easy chair, then starts to work out- they show pics in his house of him running when he was much younger.

They show the man?s name; he survived heart failure, and as he recovers, his treadmill workouts get more rigorous, and the commercial ends with him finishing a 2-mile run in a local race.

The commercial is so well-done and very inspirational; the guy should get a sneaker contract from Nike or adidas, and they should run that commercial during the Super Bowl.

8) Christian Yelich is first player with 12+ homers in his team?s first 22 games since Alex Rodriguez in 2007.

7) Baseball injuries:
? Rays? OF Austin Meadows (thumb) had an MRI.
? Blue Jays put P Matt Shoemaker (knee) on IL; he tore his ACL and is out for the season.

6) Merrill Kelly threw 109 pitches for Arizona Friday, but he didn?t finish the 4th inning. He got 18 called strikes, had 21 pitches fouled off, gave up six hits on 12 balls in play.

Funny thing, two of the three runs he gave up came on a harmless looking pop-up to short CF that the wind played games with and no one caught it.

5) Detroit Pistons have lost 13 consecutive playoff games, tied for longest-ever streak in NBA.

4) Seattle Mariners have already had five games with 4+ homers this year; all of last season, they had five games with 4+ home runs.

3) Former major league OF Matt Holliday is retired now and lives in Stillwater, OK; he recently had a house built in Stillwater. The guy who built the house is Philly catcher JT Realmuto?s uncle. Small world.

2) Good grief, the Utah Jazz uniforms are terrible. Like the old purple uniforms with the musical note on them that Pete Maravich wore for the Jazz back in the day.

1) A comedian was elected president of Ukraine; I was going to make a joke about this, but then remembered who the president is here. Having a comedian as president wouldn?t be so bad.

Beer Battle

The Milwaukee Brewers will travel to meet the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium II on Monday, and the wind will be blowing out hard to left field at a 12-15 mph clip for the matchup between RHPs Adrian Houser and Jack Flaherty. Milwaukee heads into this one with a sparkling 20-7 mark in their past 27 games inside the division, and they're 19-9 in the past 28 games on the road. In addition, they're 9-2 in the past 11 road games against teams with a winning overall record. The Brew Crew is also an impressive 20-8 over their past 28 contests following a loss.

For the Cardinals, they're 9-4 in their past 13 games overall, while posting an 8-3 record across their past 11 games against teams with a winning record. With Flaherty on the mound, those winning ways will be put to the test. The Cards are just 2-8 across his past 10 starts, and they're only 2-6 in the past eight agaisnt teams with a winning overall record. The Cardinals have dropped nine of the past 11 meetings with the Brewers, and they've lost four in a row at home to their division rivals. In addition, the Cards are 2-5 in their past seven starts against the Brewers.

Looking Ahead

The Twins and Astros tangle at Minute Maid Park in Houston to open a new set. The Twins have won four of their past five games, and they sit atop the AL Central with a plus-20 run differential. They have won four of thep ast five on the road, too, but that will be put to the test with RHP Jake Odorizzi on the bump. The Astros have won 19 of the past 26 at home, and they're 6-1 in Brad Peacock's past seven outings, and 4-1 in his past five against winning teams, too.
