LEADING OFF: Yelich crunching Cards, Sale slump, deGrom OK?
April 21, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

DON'T PITCH TO HIM

NL MVP Christian Yelich gets yet another chance to feast on St. Louis pitching when the Brewers visit Busch Stadium.

The teams have already played seven times this season - Yelich has eight home runs and 19 RBIs in those matchups, going 12 for 24 with eight walks for an incredible 2.167 OPS.

Cardinals right-hander Jack Flaherty is 1-2 with a 4.58 ERA in seven career starts against Milwaukee.

TOUGH START

Chris Sale (0-4, 8.50 ERA) faces Detroit when the Red Sox begin a 10-game homestand. The All-Star lefty has been tagged for 17 runs and 23 hits over 18 innings in his four starts this season.

The World Series champs return to Fenway Park after a three-game sweep of AL East-leading Tampa Bay.

CHECK UP?

The Mets might find out more about ace Jacob deGrom, who was scratched from a start in St. Louis over the weekend after saying he felt soreness in his right arm.

The team originally said deGrom would get an MRI on Monday back in New York. But the Mets then said he might not need one, adding his elbow trouble likely was a result of altering his routine during a recent bout of strep throat.

OH BABY!

A day off for the Cubs comes at a perfect time for David Bote. Moments after hitting a game-ending single in the ninth inning Sunday to beat Arizona, Bote rushed off to Colorado - his wife, Rachel, was set for the birth of the couple's third child.

Chicago next plays on Tuesday, taking on the Dodgers at Wrigley Field.

BOO-WHO

Bryce Harper usually heard his share of boos when he played at Citi Field as a member of the Washington Nationals. Now with another NL East rival, the slugging outfielder figures to get the same treatment when the Phillies visit the New York Mets' home field for the first time this season.

Jake Arrieta (3-1, 2.25 ERA) starts for Philadelphia vs. Steven Matz (1-1, 4.96). Matz allowed eight runs without recording an out in his previous start, last week in Philly.

ONE AND WON

A whopping 10 MLB games were decided by one run on Sunday. The Rangers nearly blew a nine-run lead before holding off Houston 11-10 and the Dodgers edged Milwaukee 6-5 on Cody Bellinger's homer in the ninth off Josh Hader.

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Jake Arrieta, Philadelphia Phillies (3-1, 2.25 ERA, $152):
Four starts into 2019 and it looks like Arrieta might have rediscovered his form with the Cubs from a few years ago. Arrieta has been a workhorse for the Phillies, throwing 213 pitches over 15 innings in his last two starts, and giving up just two runs in that span. Arrieta has begun to rely more on his changeup, adding another option to an arsenal that already includes a sinker, slider and curveball.

Tonight Arrieta and the Phillies will be facing off against Steven Matz and the New York Mets in a pick'em game.

SLUMPING

Chris Sale, Boston Red Sox (0-4, 8.50 ERA, -$726):
After inking a $145 million extension last month, Sale has gone from ace to absolute disaster. Sale's WHIP is at 1.56 and opposing batters are hitting .311 against him this year, almost 100 points higher than his career average of .219. Sale's four-seam fastball which made batters miss for more than half a decade, has lost velocity. It used to be in the 95-97 mph range and this season has been between 91-92, a world of difference that is allowing batters to catch up to it.

After shoulder problems in 2018, it's possible that the left-hander is still on the mend. Regardless of the reason he needs to turn things around and he'll get a good chance to do so today against a Detroit Tigers lineup batting just .218.

3 STRIKES

ADVANTAGE IN APRIL

In an article we wrote at the beginning of the month, we featured Jeremy Hellickson as one of the best pitchers to bet on in April. After a rough season debut in relief, he's pitched a pair of gems as a starter, giving up just two runs over 11.2 innings in those two games. Hellickson takes the mound for Washington tonight against the Rockies. He might only get a couple more starts in April, so now might be a good time to put a few dollars down on him.

Also consider the Under 11 for the game in Colorado, considering the inflated totals at Coors Field and the tendency for games played there to lean towards the Under.

SURF AND TURF IN TAMPA BAY

As if today's matchup between the 7-15 Kansas City Royals and the 14-8 Tampa Bay Rays couldn't get any more one-sided, the surface at Tropicana Field provides yet another betting edge for the -185 home faves.

The Rays are 54-25 in their last 79 games on astroturf, while the Royals are 0-7 in their previous seven games on astroturf. Kansas City is also 0-8 in the last eight games of the head-to-head series.

HOW YOU DOIN'?

Rangers outfielder Joey Gallo has been on a tear recently, batting .478 over his last six games with four homers and 11 RBI. Tonight, Gallo and Texas will go up against Oakland A's right-hander Chris Bassitt who will be making his season debut. Gallo has -125 odds to get a hit today and +190 odds to drill a homerun.

Diamond Trends - Monday
Vince Akins

SU Play ON Trend of the Day:

-- The Astros are 12-0 SU in the first game of a series with no rest at home off a loss as a favorite in which they never led.

SU Play AGAINST Trend of the Day:

-- The Orioles are 0-14 SU at home off a game as a dog in which they struck out at least ten times and it is before the All-Star break.

Batter-Based Trend of the Day:

-- The Royals are 0-15 SU on the road off a road game in which Whit Merrifield struck out at least twice.

Starter-Based Trend of the Day:

-- The Nationals are 0-13 OU in franchise history with Jeremy Hellickson when he averaged fewer than 4.1 pitches per batter in his last start, staying under by an average of 3.19 runs per game.

Arizona tops Pirates 12-4; Bucs' Burdi exits with arm injury
April 22, 2019
By The Associated Press

PITTSBURGH (AP) Pirates reliever Nick Burdi left in tears with a right arm injury, a chilling low point for Pittsburgh in a 12-4 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night.

Burdi, who had Tommy John surgery in 2017, had already given up five runs in a third of an inning when he fired a 96 mph fastball to Jarrod Dyson. The 26-year-old Burdi shrugged his right arm after releasing the pitch then crumpled to the ground. Surrounded by teammates, a trainer and manager Clint Hurdle, Burdi sobbed on the mound before standing and walking off holding his arm. The team said he was dealing with pain in his biceps and right elbow.

The scene came after the Diamondbacks had already put the finishing touches on a massive rally that turned a three-run deficit into their major league leading ninth comeback win of the season.

David Peralta hit a bases-clearing triple off Kyle Crick (0-1) in the seventh and Christian Walker smacked a two-run homer off Burdi two batters later. Eduardo Escobar hit his third home run of the season and finished with three hits and three RBIs.

Arizona starter Zack Godley only lasted four-plus innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, with four walks and two strikeouts. Matt Andriese (3-1) picked up the win in relief.

RAYS 6, ROYALS 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Mike Zunino returned from the paternity list and hit his first home run for Tampa Bay, a two-run shot that helped stop a season-high four-game skid with a win over Kansas City.

Yandy Diaz, Brandon Lowe and Daniel Robertson also drove in runs for the AL East leaders, who scored three times in the seventh to come from behind against Brad Keller (2-2). It's the ninth time this season the Royals have lost after holding a lead in the sixth inning or beyond.

Pitching while appealing a five-game suspension for his role in a benches-clearing fracas with the Chicago White Sox last week, Keller allowed five runs and seven hits over 6 1/3 innings.

Alex Gordon, Hunter Dozier and Jorge Soler hit solo homers for the Royals, who have lost four straight.

Wilmer Font (1-0) struck out the only batter he faced to get the win. Emilio Pagan pitched the ninth for his first career save.

METS 5, PHILLIES 1

Arenado also doubled twice and drove in two to help the Rockies win for the seventh time in eight games. He is the ninth Rockies player to reach 1,000 hits, getting there with a solo shot off Wander Suero (1-2) in the seventh to make it 6-5.

Mark Reynolds and pinch-hitter Raimel Tapia also homered for Colorado, and Trevor Story singled twice and drove in a run to extend his hitting streak to 11 games.

Bassitt (1-0) struck out seven and walked four over five innings, allowing two hits. He has won his last three decisions dating to last season.

Fernando Rodney pitched the ninth for his 907th career appearance, moving past Cy Young for 24th on baseball's career list.

Tuesday?s 6-pack

Odds to win next February?s Super Bowl (from Westgate SuperBook)

6-1: Kansas City Chiefs, New England Patriots

8-1: New Orleans Saints

10-1: Los Angeles Rams

12-1: Indianapolis Colts

14-1: Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, Cleveland Browns

20-1: Minnesota Vikings, Philadelphia Eagles, San Francisco 49ers

Quote of the Day
?He?s the most serious rookie I?ve ever coached in my life. I?ve never coached a guy with the focus that he has?
Doc Rivers, talking about Clippers rookie Landry Shamet

Tuesday?s quiz
In the movie Draft Day, who played the coach of the Cleveland Browns?

Monday?s quiz
Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota were the top two picks in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Sunday?s quiz
San Diego Chargers drafted Eli Manning in 2004, then traded him to the Giants for Philip Rivers. Giants traded an ?05 #1 pick and an ?04 3rd-round pick to the Chargers in that deal.

******************************

Tuesday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??

13) According to Wikipedia, the Wonderlic Personnel Test is a popular group intelligence test used to assess the aptitude of prospective employees for learning and problem-solving in a range of occupations. NFL teams give the test to prospects at the NFL Combine each year. It consists of 50 multiple choice questions to be answered in 12 minutes.

Can you process information quickly? That is what is being measured here.

20 is considered an average score; there are wide-ranging opinions as to whether test results are an indicator of future on-field success. Tom Brady got a 33; very good. Dan Marino got a 16; not so good. Ryan Fitzpatrick got a 48; excellent, but he?s heading to his 8th team this fall.

Of all the QB prospects in this year?s draft, Kyler Murray got the lowest score (20), which makes perfect sense only because Murray is a such a polarizing figure as a prospect. The Wonderlic test doesn?t measure how fast you run or how well you throw the ball.

12) Was reading some stuff about these tests and football coaches, and I laughed when I read that some coaches are leery of prospects who score really high on tests, because they think kids who are really smart won?t respect a coach?s opinions/coaching as much as they should.

11) Mets 5, Phillies 1? Bryce Harper got tossed in the fourth inning while he was in the dugout for carping about balls/strikes. It was Harper?s 12th career ejection, by 12 different umpires.

It was the first time since June 2015 that a Phillies player was ejected.

10) Seahawks? QB Russell Wilson got a 4-year, $140M contract extension last week; since then, he gave each of the Seahawks offensive lineman $12,000 in Amazon stock as a gift, to show his appreciation for them protecting him on Sunday afternoons.

9) Pretty cool that the Portland Trailblazers are a really good team, and their two best players went to college at Weber State and Lehigh, not exactly basketball factories.

8) From Elias Sports: Colorado?s Charlie Blackmon is first player to hit a walk-off home run and then hit a leadoff home run on the first pitch of the team?s next game since Jerome Walton did it for Cincinnati Reds on May 6-7, 1995. Blackmon did this Friday/Saturday.

7) Baseball injuries:
? Cardinals put P Michael Wacha (knee) on IL
? Red Sox P Nathan Eovaldi (elbow) is out 4-6 weeks.
? Pirates P Nick Burdi (elbow/bicep) appeared to suffer a serious injury.

6) Georgia CB Deandre Baker was supposed to be a first round draft pick in the NFL Draft Thursday, but in the months since the season ended, his stock has dropped, dating back to Baker?s decision to sit out Georgia?s season-ending Sugar Bowl loss to Texas.

In other words, if you skip your team?s bowl game, you might annoy the coaches, who talk to the scouts, and they?re not going to be as positive in their assessment of you.

This is something to track with other players going forward, as more kids skip bowl games to make sure they don?t get hurt.

5) Milwaukee 127, Detroit 104? This was Bucks? first 7-game series sweep since 1983. Next up for Milwaukee is an interesting series with the Celtics. Detroit sets a dubious NBA record with its 14th consecutive playoff loss.

4) Joey Gallo hit his first career sac fly Sunday, in his 1,337th career plate appearance; only Greg Maddux (1,405) and Steve Sax (1,388) went longer in their careers before hitting their first sac fly.

3) I?ll sound like the older guy that I am saying this, but why do high school athletes go on TV to announce their college choice? Its like they?re attention junkies, craving the maximum amount of attention they can get. Just send out a message on Twitter or Instagram and be done with it.

2) Phoenix Suns fired coach Igor Kokoskov less than a year after hiring him; whatever poor soul coaches the Suns next year will be Phoenix?s 7th head coach in eight years.

1) Sounds like sports betting could become legal in Iowa as soon as June or July; always nice to know that Iowa, Mississippi and West Virginia are more advanced than New York in making sports betting legal. All New York is advanced in is raising taxes.

LEADING OFF: Sale tries to turn corner, Harper gets heated
April 23, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Tuesday:

PLAYING TWO

After rain postponed his scheduled start Monday, Boston's Chris Sale gets the ball for Game One of a doubleheader against Detroit. Sale (0-4, 8.50) has concerned Red Sox fans with lousy results and subpar stuff this season, though his velocity ticked up in a loss to the Yankees last week. Boston is coming off a three-game sweep over the AL East-leading Rays, which pushed the reigning World Series champs to 9-13.

HEATED HARPER

Bryce Harper is expected back in the Phillies lineup a night after bolting from the bench to angrily confront the plate umpire after being ejected against the Mets. Harper, miffed by a couple strike calls earlier from Mark Carlson, got tossed from the dugout with teammate Cesar Hernandez at-bat. Phillies manager Gabe Kapler quickly came out to argue, then Harper followed in a much bigger hurry. Harper yelled and pointed at Carlson over and over from close range, with Kapler repeatedly pushing away his star player from the ump.

CHILLING SCENE

The Pirates await word on reliever Nick Burdi a day after the 26-year-old left the mound in tears with a right arm injury. Burdi, formerly a touted prospect with the Twins, made the Pirates this spring two seasons removed from Tommy John surgery and had 17 strikeouts over 8 1/3 innings before Monday. Burdi shrugged his right arm after releasing a 96 mph fastball, crumpled to the ground and sobbed while teammates tried to console him during a 12-4 loss to Arizona.

FREE GIO

Veteran left-hander Gio Gonzalez is back on the market after opting out of his minor league deal with the Yankees on Monday to become a free agent. Gonzalez was 2-1 with a 6.00 ERA in three starts with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after signing a minor league deal with an April opt-out. New York decided not to call him up despite a number of injuries, instead relying on youngsters like Domingo German and Jonathan Loaisiga - the latter was recalled to start Tuesday against the Angels.

Sale remains winless as Tigers sweep Red Sox 7-4, 4-2
April 24, 2019
By The Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) Chris Sale remained winless after five starts but struck out a season-high 10 in five innings as the Detroit Tigers beat the Boston Red Sox 7-4 Tuesday to start their first doubleheader sweep at Fenway Park since August 1965.

Spencer Turnbull (1-2) pitched five shutout innings for his first major league win, leading the Tigers to a 4-2 victory in the nightcap that left the World Series champions at 9-15.

Brandon Dixon greeted Marcus Walden with a three-run double after the Tigers loaded the bases against Hector Velazquez (0-2), and the Red Sox were swept in a twin-bill for the first time since the Los Angeles Angels accomplished the feat on July 20, 2015.

Sale gave up two runs, five hits and two walks, lowering his ERA from 8.50 to 7.43. The 30-year-old, who signed a $160 million, six-year contract late in spring training, had never gone his first five starts in a big league season without a victory.

In the first game, Matthew Boyd (2-1) combined with three relievers on a five-hitter against Boston, starting a 10-game homestand after a three-game sweep at Tampa Bay. Josh Harrison hit a tiebreaking, two-run double in the eighth off Colten Brewer (0-2) and scored two pitches later on a single by Grayson Greiner.

In the second game, Shane Greene struck out two in a one-hit ninth for his 11th save in as many tries. The opener was Detroit's first win that Greene did not save.

RAYS 5, ROYALS 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Jalen Beeks took over from opener Ryne Stanek in the second and struck out seven in 4 2/3 shutout innings, Mike Zunino homered for the second straight game and Tampa Bay sent Kansas City to its fifth straight loss.

Homer Bailey (2-2) failed in his attempt to win three straight starts for the first time in five years, getting taken out after Tampa Bay's first four batters reached in the second inning.

Zunino had three of Tampa Bay's seven hits and drove in two runs.

AL East-leading Tampa Bay clinched its seventh series win in eight series and extended its winning streak against the Royals to 10 games. Kansas City is an AL-worst 7-17.

Beeks (1-0) allowed two hits and two walks, retiring eight straight in one stretch.

METS 9, PHILLIES 0

NEW YORK (AP) - Zack Wheeler hit his first major league home run and struck out 11 in seven sharp innings as New York handed Philadelphia its fifth loss in six games.

The only spirit the Phillies showed came with two outs in the ninth when two fastballs by Mets reliever Jacob Rhame sailed over Rhys Hoskins' head. The benches started to clear after the first time, and Hoskins angrily slung his bat after the next one, which was ball four.

A career .129 hitter, Wheeler (2-2) lined a two-run double in the second off Zach Eflin (2-3). The next time up, Wheeler did even better, launching a drive over the wall in left-center.

Todd Frazier connected for a grand slam that made it 8-0 in the fifth.

CARDINALS 4, BREWERS 3

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Paul DeJong hit a tiebreaking, leadoff homer in the eighth inning, Yadier Molina had three hits and two RBIs, and St. Louis beat Milwaukee.

Milwaukee had three solo homers, two by Travis Shaw and another by Orlando Arcia.

DeJong took reliever Alex Wilson (1-1) deep to make it 3-2. Molina hit his second double with one out, scoring Jose Martinez, who had walked to go with two singles. Molina stole third but was stranded there. It was his first stolen base this season and the 17th time he's stolen third in his career.

Andrew Miller (1-1) struck out two in a perfect eighth to pick up his first win as a Cardinal. Jordan Hicks pitched the ninth for his sixth save.

YANKEES 7, ANGELS 5

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Luke Voit homered twice, Mike Ford went deep for the first time in the majors and New York beat Los Angeles for its fifth straight win.

Los Angeles' Justin Bour hit a grand slam off Chad Green in the eighth, but Zack Britton pitched the ninth for his first save.

Ford, called up for the first time last week to help the injury-plagued Yankees, hit a two-run shot in the fifth off starter Chris Stratton (0-2).

Domingo German (4-1) allowed an unearned run and four hits in 6 2/3 innings.

CUBS 7, DODGERS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Jose Quintana pitched seven crisp innings in his third straight win, and Chicago used a fast start to beat Los Angeles.

Willson Contreras hit a three-run double in Chicago's four-run first, and Anthony Rizzo added a two-run drive in the second. Javier Baez juked around first baseman David Freese for a memorable infield single in the second and had a solo homer in the seventh.

It was more than enough support for Quintana (3-1), who turned in another gem in the Cubs' sixth win in seven games. The veteran left-hander allowed two runs and four hits while improving to 3-0 with a sparkling 0.86 ERA since he was hit hard in a loss at Milwaukee on April 5.

NL West-leading Los Angeles had won seven of eight. But the Dodgers were unable to recover after Kenta Maeda (3-2) struggled early on.

ASTROS 10, TWINS 4

HOUSTON (AP) - Jose Altuve hit a three-run homer and Alex Bregman added three RBIs as Houston rallied over Minnesota to snap a three-game skid.

The game was tied in the seventh when Trevor Hildenberger (2-1) allowed a single to Tyler White before issuing consecutive walks to Altuve and George Springer to load the bases with one out. Bregman's sacrifice fly to right field put Houston up 5-4 and chased Hildenberger.

Houston had been foiled by big first innings in a three-game losing streak with its starters allowing a combined 10 runs in the opening frame. The first-inning trouble continued on Tuesday as Eddie Rosario hit a three-run homer off Wade Miley with one out in the inning.

Wade Miley, who was the first left-handed starter the Twins have faced this season, yielded three hits and three runs while striking out seven in six innings for his 21st straight start where he allowed three earned runs or fewer. Hector Rondon (2-0) allowed three hits and a run in the seventh for the win.

ATHLETICS 11, RANGERS 5

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Matt Chapman homered and walked three times, Marcus Semien had a two-run double as part of a six-run fourth inning and Oakland beat Texas.

Stephen Piscotty matched his career high with four hits and scored three times. Piscotty has a franchise record 16-game hitting streak against the Rangers.

Frankie Montas (4-1) struck out six and pitched into the sixth inning in an uneven start to win his third straight and team-leading fourth overall.

Danny Santana homered and had three hits for Texas. Chapman hit his seventh home run of the season off Lance Lynn (2-2) in the first.

PADRES 6, MARINERS 3

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Austin Hedges' two-run homer bounced out of center fielder Mallex Smith's glove and over the fence, and Franmil Reyes homered twice and had three RBIs.

Hedges had an unusual homer on a fly ball to deep center off reliever Cory Gearrin with two outs in the sixth. Smith, a former Padres' farmhand, leaped just in front of the fence and the ball bounced out of his glove and went over.

Reyes hit a two-run homer to cap the three-run second inning and connected again off rookie Erik Swanson (0-2) with two outs in the sixth.

Nick Margevicius (2-2) allowed two runs and four hits in five innings, struck out four and walked five. Kirby Yates pitched the ninth for his 11th save in as many chances.

NATIONALS 6, ROCKIES 3

DENVER (AP) - Patrick Corbin pitched six strong innings, Victor Robles hit a three-run double, and Washington beat Colorado.

Corbin (2-0) gave up three runs - two earned - and five hits, and had a key base hit in Washington's four-run third inning. Sean Doolittle got the last four outs for his third save.

Washington scored two runs in the top of the ninth when Rockies reliever DJ Johnson walked Juan Soto with the bases loaded before hitting Howie Kendrick with a pitch.

Raimel Tapia homered for Colorado and Ryan McMahon had two hits. Jeff Hoffman (0-1), recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque to start in place of injured Kyle Freeland (finger blister), sailed through the first two innings only to run into trouble in the third. He allowed four runs in five innings.

MARLINS 3, INDIANS 1

CLEVELAND (AP) - Pablo Lopez allowed just two hits in his longest start this season and Jorge Alfaro homered on reliever Neil Ramirez's first pitch, moments after Cleveland starter Carlos Carrasco left with another injury.

Lopez (2-3) stopped a three-start losing streak. The right-hander, who had not gone more than 5 1/3 innings, held the Indians without a hit until the sixth and was not charged with an earned run in 6 1/3 innings.

Miami closer Sergio Romo worked the ninth for his third save, completing a three-hitter as the Marlins improved to 2-5 on the road.

Alfaro's homer triggered Florida's three-run fifth off Ramirez (0-1), who came in after Carrasco hurt his left knee while covering first base.

REDS 7, BRAVES 6

CINCINNATI (AP) - Yasiel Puig hit a two-run homer in the first inning off the facade of the second deck in left-center field, and Cincinnati wasted an early lead and then rallied to beat Atlanta.

Jose Peraza had his first RBIs since homering on opening day, and Tucker Barnhart homered for the Reds, who have won four of five following a four-game losing streak. Cincinnati led 3-0 in the fifth inning, fell behind 4-3 in the sixth, then scored four runs in the bottom half.

Peraza hit a two-run double off Kevin Gausman (1-2) for a 5-4 lead, Jessie Biddle forced in a run with a bases-loaded walk to pinch-hitter Phillip Ervin and Puig hit a sacrifice fly against Wes Parsons.

Robert Stephenson (2-0) struck out two batters with a runner on third to end the sixth. Raisel Iglesias retired Ozzie Albies, Josh Donaldson and Freddie Freeman for his fifth save.

DIAMONDBACKS 2, PIRATES 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Jarrod Dyson dived around catcher Francisco Cervelli but was only credited with the go-ahead run in the sixth inning after a replay review.

Luke Weaver (2-1) struck out seven over 6 1/3 innings and won his second straight start. Andrew Chafin and Archie Bradley got the ball to Greg Holland, who worked around a walk and a wild pitch to earn his fifth save.

Both runs went against Pirates starter Trevor Williams (1-1), who threw seven innings. He struck out four and walked one.

ORIOLES 9, WHITE SOX 1

BALTIMORE (AP) - Dwight Smith Jr. hit a three-run homer, one of four long balls off Ivan Nova (0-3), and Baltimore overpowered Chicago to end a four-game losing streak.

Renanto Nunez, Chris Davis and Joey Rickard also connected for the Orioles, who improved their home record to 2-10 before a cozy, appreciative crowd of 8,953.

Andrew Cashner (4-1) gave up one run, five hits and a walk over seven innings to win his fourth straight decision. Just as important, he provided much needed rest to a bullpen that was drained in a 12-2 loss to Chicago one night earlier.

GIANTS 7, BLUE JAYS 6

TORONTO (AP) - Pablo Sandoval went 3 for 4 and homered for the first time this year, one of a season-high four home runs for San Francisco.

Joe Panik, Evan Longoria and Brandon Belt also homered for the Giants, who came in 29th in the majors in batting and ahead of just one team in home runs. Rowdy Tellez hit an eighth-inning grand slam for the Blue Jays, whose four-game winning streak was snapped.

Jeff Samardzija (2-1) allowed two earned runs in 5 1/3 innings, improving to 3-0 in four starts against the Blue Jays. Toronto's Trent Thornton (0-3) lasted five innings in his fifth major league start, giving up four earned runs off of six hits.

Wednesday?s 6-pack

Odds to win next February?s Super Bowl (from Westgate SuperBook)

6-1: Kansas City Chiefs, New England Patriots

8-1: New Orleans Saints

10-1: Los Angeles Rams

12-1: Indianapolis Colts

14-1: Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, Cleveland Browns

20-1: Minnesota Vikings, Philadelphia Eagles, San Francisco 49ers

Quote of the Day
?If you get fired for cheating you can get rehired, but if you get fired for losing it?s like you have leprosy. Young coaches need to bear that in mind. Cheating and not graduating players won?t get you in trouble, but that damn losing will.?
The late Royce Waltman, former coach at Indiana State

Wednesday?s quiz
Which college football program is only one in country that has had the #1 pick in NFL Draft two years in a row?

Tuesday?s quiz
In the movie Draft Day, Denis Leary played the coach of the Cleveland Browns.

Monday?s quiz
Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota were the top two picks in the 2015 NFL Draft.

**************************

Wednesday?s List of 13: Mid-week musings??.

13) Never really thought about this much, but Ross Tucker wrote an article in The Athletic this week about how a lot of active pro football players despise watching the NFL Draft, because he might be watching his employer select a player who will then take his job this summer.

Welcome to Case Keenum?s world; when he suits up for the Redskins this fall he?ll be on his fifth team in six years, at the most visible position in all of sports. No pressure there. But there are rumors that Washington will trade for Josh Rosen or draft a QB, which means that in 2020, it would likely be six teams in seven years.

12) Thru Monday, there were 1.34 home runs hit per game in major league games, ahead of 2017?s pace of 1.26 HR?s/game, which is the all-time record.

11) One member of Georgia?s football recruiting office has been fired and another suspended for 30 days without pay. No one is saying why, but it can?t be good.

10) 49ers? kicker Robbie Gould told the team that he will not negotiate or sign a long-term deal with them? he requested a trade. Gould is 36; he was the Bears? kicker for 11 years.

9) Seattle Seahawks traded DE Frank Clark to the Chiefs for a 1st-round pick this year and a 2nd-round pick next year. Teams also exchanged 3rd round picks this year.

8) Tampa Bay Buccaneers have no games in Tampa between Sept. 22 and Nov. 10; they?re not happy about it.

7) Angels? Peter Bourjos had played in 1,454 professional games in 14 seasons before Monday?s game. In the 13th inning, he made his first-ever appearance in the infield, playing 2B, and made a great diving stop going to his left to rob a batter of a hit.

Halos used P Felix Pena as a pinch-runner in that game; last time the Angels used a pitcher as a pinch-runner had been Steve Sparks vs Arizona on June 13, 1999.

6) Arizona poached G Max Hazzard as a grad transfer from Cal-Irvine; Hazzard?s brother was a walk-on at Arizona from 2012-16. Funny thing, Cal-Irvine was better than Arizona last year, when Hazzard scored 12.5 ppg for the Anteaters- he is the grandson of former UCLA coach Walt Hazzard.

Idaho State has two kids transferring out of the program, which is never a good sign; one is a 6-11 center who scored 10 points a game, the other a sub who played 19 minutes/game.

5) North Carolina had a big recruiting day, signing two hoop prospects; Cole Anthony (Greg Anthony?s son) and Anthony Harris, a couple of talented guards.

4) Blue Jays SS prospect Bo Bichette broke his left hand when he was hit by a pitch in Monday night?s game; Bichette plays for the AAA Buffalo Bisons.

3) This will be the first time ever that the Texas Longhorns will go four years in a row without a first round pick in the NFL Draft.

2) NBA said Tuesday that 233 players ? 175 players from colleges/other schools and 58 international players ? filed as early entry candidates for the 2019 NBA Draft.

Seeing how only 60 players get taken in the draft, going to be some disappointed people.

1) College football rules change starting this fall: If game reaches a 5th OT, teams will begin to run alternating 2-point plays rather than offensive possessions starting at 25-yard line. There were concerns about players being injured/getting exhausted with a couple games going six or seven OT?s in recent years.

LEADING OFF: Sabathia nearing 3,000 Ks, Snell's toe a go
April 23, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Wednesday:

SABATHIA'S STRIKEOUTS

Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia needs six strikeouts to join Randy Johnson and Steve Carlton as the only left-handers with 3,000 Ks, putting him within reach during a start against the Angels. Sabathia (1-0, 0.00 ERA) would be the 17th player overall to reach the milestone. When he does, he'll be the first pitcher to do so since John Smoltz in 2008. The 38-year-old Sabathia announced prior to the season that he'll retire at year's end.

TOE'S A GO

Reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell is set to return to the Rays 10 days after breaking a toe. Snell (2-1, 2.16) fractured the fourth toe on his right foot attempting to move a decorative display in a bathroom April 14. He threw 18 pitches off a mound Saturday and eight more pitches Monday, and now he's scheduled to start against Kansas City.

RUSSELL RETURNS

Cubs shortstop Addison Russell is joining Triple-A Iowa to prepare for his return from a 40-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy. Russell is expected to play when Iowa begins a nine-game homestand against Nashville. He had stayed in Arizona to work out after the Cubs broke camp for the start of the season. Russell was suspended last fall after a series of allegations made by his ex-wife. While declining to get into any specifics, Russell said in February he was accountable for his past actions and apologized for ''the hurt and the pain'' he caused.

PENALTY COMING?

Major League Baseball is reviewing Bryce Harper's rant at an umpire, trying to determine whether the Phillies star should be disciplined. There was no decision Tuesday, a day after Harper went wild during a game against the Mets at Citi Field. Harper was ejected for the 12th time in his eight-season career while he barked from the dugout four batters after being called out on strikes by Mark Carlson.

BAD BREAK

Touted prospect Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is nearing his first big league call-up, but No. 2 Blue Jays prospect Bo Bichette could be a ways behind after breaking his left hand Monday. X-rays revealed a fracture after he was hit by a pitch while playing with Triple-A Buffalo, and he was set to visit a hand specialist to determine further treatment. Bichette, a 21-year-old shortstop, hit .417 with four homers and five RBIs in 18 spring training games. He was batting .250 with one home run and eight RBIs in 14 games with Buffalo.
