Wednesday's Diamond Notes
April 24, 2019
By Kevin Rogers

Hottest team: Yankees (8-2 last 10)

New York started the season by losing six times as a heavy home favorite to Baltimore, Detroit, and Chicago. However, the Yankees pulled off a two-game home sweep of the rival Red Sox to get back on track as the Bronx Bombers are currently riding a five-game hot streak. The Yankees edged the Angels in 14 innings in the series opener, 4-3, in spite of playing without plenty of its stars, including Aaron Judge, who was injured last weekend.

New York won in Anaheim again last night, 7-5 as Luke Voit drilled a pair of home runs and Brett Gardner picked up four hits in the third spot. CC Sabathia takes the mound for the Yankees tonight as the veteran southpaw has not allowed an earned run in two starts this season. The Yankees are 2-0 in Sabathia?s two outings in 2019, while the former Cy Young winner beat the Angels last season, 2-1 as a short road underdog by tossing seven innings.

Coldest team: Phillies (1-5 last six)

This is a road trip from hell for Philadelphia, who has won once in six games at Colorado and New York as the only victory came last Saturday at Coors Field, 8-5. In the last three losses, the Phillies? offense has produced two runs, while getting outscored 14-1 in two defeats at Citi Field to the Mets.

Vince Velasquez tries to stop the bleeding for Philadelphia as the right-hander has given up five earned runs in three starts this season. Velasquez hasn?t received a decision in those three starts, but the Phillies are 2-1 in those outings. Last season, the Phillies went 0-2 in Velasquez?s two starts against the Mets, while Philadelphia is 2-11 in his past 13 road outings since 2018.

Hottest pitcher: Jordan Lyles, Pirates (2-0, 0.53 ERA)

Pittsburgh has dropped each of the first two games to Arizona in its four-game set at PNC Park. The Pirates will try to snap a three-game skid as Lyles seeks his third win of the season. Lyles has put together incredible numbers through three outings by yielding only one run in 17 innings of work, while outdueling Madison Bumgarner in a 4-1 win over the Giants last Friday. The Pirates have hit the UNDER in all three of Lyles? starts, while Pittsburgh is 2-0 this season after scoring one run or less.

Coldest pitcher: Tyson Ross, Tigers (1-2, 3.38 ERA)

Detroit stunned Boston with a doubleheader sweep at Fenway Park on Tuesday as the Tigers look to beat the stumbling Sox once again. Ross started the season with a pair of solid outings against the Yankees and Royals by allowing four runs (three earned) in 12 innings or work. However, the veteran right-hander has yielded nine runs (six earned) in his last 12 innings on the mound, although the Tigers rallied past the White Sox, 9-7 in his last outing. The Tigers are 0-2 in Ross? two road starts this season, while his teams (Padres and Cardinals) won eight of his 13 away starts in 2018.

Biggest OVER run: Braves (7-2 last nine)

Atlanta?s offense continues to stay hot in spite of dropping a 7-6 decision at Cincinnati on Tuesday. The Braves posted 19 runs in the final 14 innings of their series win at Cleveland, while scoring their seven runs from the fifth to the eighth inning in last night?s one-run defeat. Mike Soroka makes his second start for Atlanta as he pitched well in a 4-1 home loss to Arizona last Thursday. Soroka allowed four hits and one earned run in five innings, but the Braves? offense couldn?t get going as the right-hander easily cashed a pair of OVERS in his previous two road starts in 2018.

Biggest UNDER run: Nationals (4-2 last six)

Washington took care of Colorado last night, 6-3 to even up their three-game series at 1-1 heading into the rubber match this afternoon at Coors Field. Following an OVER on an 11 total in the series opener, the oddsmakers posted another 11 on Tuesday night, but the Nationals were able to limit an opponent to three runs or less for the fourth time in six games. Anibal Sanchez heads to the mound today as the Nationals are 3-0 to the UNDER in his previous three starts, while Washington has not scored more than three runs in any of his past three outings.

Matchup to watch: Dodgers vs. Cubs

These two powerhouses have hooked up in two of the last three National League Championship Series as they continue their series at Wrigley Field. The Cubs jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after two innings in Tuesday?s 7-2 rout of the Dodgers to improved to 8-2 in the last 10 games. Jose Quintana shut down the Dodgers? bats by tossing seven innings and allowing two earned runs to pick up his third victory of the season.

The Cubs turn to another southpaw tonight as Cole Hamels seeks his fourth win after a shaky start against Texas to begin the season. Hamels hasn?t walked a batter in his last three starts, while giving up only three earned runs in 21 innings of work, including seven scoreless innings against the Marlins last Wednesday in a 6-0 victory.

Wade Buehler counters for Los Angeles seeking consistency as the young right-hander has given up five earned runs in two starts, but has allowed one run in two other outings. Buehler pitched into the seventh inning of last Wednesday?s 3-2 home victory over the Reds as he struck out eight and allowed three hits and one unearned run. The Dodgers? offense has scored a total of seven runs in the last four games at Wrigley Field, while three of those games have gone UNDER the total.

Betcha didn?t know: Justin Verlander is making his second home start of the season as the Astros finish off their series with the Twins. Last season, the Astros lost nine times as a favorite of -200 or more at Minute Maid Park when Verlander took the mound. The former Cy Young winner and MVP faces a Minnesota team that is 6-1 off a loss this season, while Twins? right-hander Kohl Stewart returns to his hometown of Houston for his first start of 2019.

Wainwright gets 150th win as Cards sweep Brewers
April 24, 2019
By The Associated Press

ST. LOUIS (AP) Adam Wainwright was warm enough on a cool day, allowing one run in six innings for his 150th career victory, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-2 on Wednesday to complete a three-game sweep.

Last year's MVP, Christian Yelich, had most of the day off but still had a chance to rescue the Brewers. He came up as a pinch-hitter with the bases loaded in the ninth inning, but Jordan Hicks struck him out to pick up his seventh save in eight chances.

Wainwright (2-2) matched his season low in runs allowed, and it was his first quality start in a game with a starting temperature of 60 degrees or cooler since May 27, 2017.

Marcell Ozuna and Yadier Molina homered for the Cardinals as part of a four-run fourth.

St. Louis' three-game sweep of Milwaukee was its first against its NL Central rival since July 1-3, 2016.

Jhoulys Chacin (2-3) lasted four innings, allowing four runs on five hits.

PHILLIES 6, METS 0

NEW YORK (AP) - Rhys Hoskins homered off reliever Jacob Rhame and taunted him with a slow jog around the bases a night after Rhame buzzed him with two fastballs, and struggling Philadelphia beat New York.

Hoskins was furious after Rhame sailed two pitches over his head with two outs in the ninth inning of New York's 9-0 win Tuesday. The slugger faced Rhame again in the ninth Wednesday, flipping his bat emphatically after hooking a two-run shot over the wall in left.

It took Hoskins 34.23 seconds to touch `em all, the slowest trot in the majors this season.

Velasquez (1-0) struck out six and allowed three hits in five innings, dropping his ERA to 1.99, as the Phillies avoided a three-game sweep.

Jason Vargas (1-1) allowed Bryce Harper's RBI double in the first but was otherwise strong.

PADRES 1, MARINERS 0

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Rookie Chris Paddack shut down baseball's highest-scoring offense for his first victory, holding Seattle to one hit in seven innings and retiring his final 19 batters, nine by strikeout, San Diego beat AL West-leading Seattle.

Paddack and relievers Trey Wingenter and Kirby Yates combined on a two-hitter.

Ian Kinsler homered off Felix Hernandez (1-2) and the Padres swept the two-game series. They've beaten the Mariners six straight times and won three straight overall following a six-game losing streak.

The 23-year-old Paddack (1-1), who lowered his ERA from 2.25 to 1.67, was brilliant in his fifth big league start. He got into and out of a bases-loaded jam in the first, and after that it was lights out.

Yates pitched the ninth for his 12th save in as many chances.

CUBS 7, DODGERS 6

CHICAGO (AP) - Javier Baez and Jason Heyward each hit three-run homers in the sixth inning, and Chicago overcame a wild start by Cole Hamels to beat Los Angeles.

Baez chased Walker Buehler with a long, tying drive to left on an 0-2 pitch with two outs.

Pinch-hitter David Bote followed with a double to deep center against Scott Alexander (1-1). Willson Contreras was intentionally walked and Heyward lined a 2-2 pitch to the basket in left-center.

Hamels matched his highest walk total in three seasons with six over 5 2/3 innings after issuing none in winning his previous three starts.

Brad Brach (2-0) got the final two outs in the sixth. Pedro Strop walked pinch hitter Max Muncy leading off the ninth. But he struck out Enrique and got Justin Turner to hit into a double play for his third save in four chances.

GIANTS 4, BLUE JAYS 0

TORONTO (AP) - Drew Pomeranz and two relievers combined on a two-hitter, Pablo Sandoval homered for the second straight game, and San Francisco completed a two-game sweep of Toronto.

Buster Posey, Brandon Belt and Evan Longoria all hit RBI doubles as the Giants won their second straight following a season-high four-game losing streak.

The Blue Jays were shut out for the first time since opening day, when they lost 2-0 to Detroit in 10 innings.

Pomeranz (1-2) allowed two hits, both singles, in a season-high six innings. He walked two and struck out five to win for the first time since Aug. 10, 2018, with Boston.

Clay Buchholz (0-1) allowed four runs and six hits in five-plus innings. He walked none and struck out two.

ASTROS 7, TWINS 1

HOUSTON (AP) - Justin Verlander pitched eight dominant innings, and Carlos Correa, Michael Brantley and Josh Reddick all homered to lead Houston past Minnesota.

Verlander (4-0) retired the first 10 batters before Jorge Polanco crushed a pitch into the second deck in right field in the fourth inning. Verlander retired 11 of the last 12 batters he faced.

In Verlander's last three starts, he has given up three runs in 21 innings with 27 strikeouts.

Kohl Stewart (0-1) gave up five runs and eight hits, striking out one and walking three in six innings.

RED SOX 11, TIGERS 4

BOSTON (AP) - J.D. Martinez had three hits and Eduardo Rodriguez pitched six strong innings as Boston rebounded from a doubleheader sweep to beat Detroit.

The defending World Series champion Red Sox avoided their fourth losing streak of three games or more.

Martinez hit two singles, a double and drove in a run, and Christian Vazquez had two RBI singles.

Nicholas Castellanos had an RBI single for the Tigers, a day after their first doubleheader sweep in Boston since 1965.

Rodriguez (2-2) gave up a run on two hits, striking out seven and walking three.

Tyson Ross (1-3) allowed four runs in five innings.

ROYALS 10, RAYS 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Tampa Bay ace Blake Snell lasted one out into the fourth inning in his return from a broken right fourth toe as Kansas City cruised to victory.

The 2018 AL Cy Young Award winner, who hurt the toe attempting to move a decorative display in his bathroom on April 14, allowed three runs, five hits, two walks and struck out three during a 65-pitch outing.

The left-hander (2-2) had given up one run and nine hits over 19 innings in three starts prior to the injury.

Adalberto Mondesi hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs, Billy Hamilton had two hits and two RBIs, and Jakob Junis (2-2) gave up one run and four hits in five innings for the Royals, who stopped a five-game losing streak.

INDIANS 6, MARLINS 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - Jose Ramirez homered and drove in four runs, Jake Bauers' eighth-inning single scored the go-ahead run and Cleveland beat Miami.

Martin Prado's two-out homer for Miami tied the game in the top of the eighth, but the Indians responded by scoring four times to snap a three-game losing streak.

Ramirez hit a two-out homer in the first and had an RBI single in the third. His eighth-inning double added two runs and capped Cleveland's big inning.

Adam Conley (0-3) walked Carlos Gonzalez to begin the eighth. Bauers slapped a ground ball through the open left side of the infield to score Gonzalez. Francisco Lindor's two-out single added another run. Leonys Martin was hit by a pitch and Ramirez doubled into the right field corner.

Nick Wittgren (1-0) struck out two in the eighth.

ATHLETICS 6, RANGERS 5

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Chad Pinder's two-out RBI single in the ninth inning lifted Oakland over Texas.

Stephen Piscotty singled with one out off Chris Martin (1-1) and then stole second base. After Khris Davis flied out, Pinder looped a soft hit into right field. Piscotty slid into home plate to beat a wide throw home from Nomar Mazara as the A's dugout emptied, mobbing Pinder near first base.

Matt Chapman and Marcus Semien homered to help the A's complete a three-game sweep.

Mazara homered twice for Texas and Logan Forsythe also went deep as the Rangers fell to 2-7 on the road.

Blake Treinen (1-1) retired three batters and got a big double play in the ninth to earn the win.

ROCKIES 9, NATIONALS 5

DENVER (AP) - Raimel Tapia had two doubles and drove in three runs to back a solid outing from German Marquez, and Colorado beat Washington.

Charlie Blackmon homered and Trevor Story extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a double and a triple. Nolan Arenado had three RBIs, David Dahl had three hits and Wade Davis picked up his third save. The Rockies have won eight of their last 10.

Juan Soto homered for the Nationals, who have yet to win more than two games in a row this season.

Marquez (3-1) pitched in pain in his previous start because of an infected tooth. He had it pulled after the loss to Philadelphia on Friday and battled through seven innings Wednesday.

The Rockies scored the next nine runs off Anibal Sanchez (0-3) and Washington's bullpen.

DIAMONDBACKS 11, PIRATES 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ketel Marte homered twice and Arizona won at Pittsburgh for the ninth straight time.

Marte extended Arizona's lead to 5-1 with a solo shot in the fifth inning and drove a three-run shot, his sixth homer this season, into the left-field bleachers in the eighth.

Arizona's nine-game winning streak at PNC Park is its longest in an opponent's stadium. The Diamondbacks have not lost in Pittsburgh since May 29, 2017.

Merrill Kelly (2-2) gave up two runs on six hits in seven innings, walking two and striking out five.

Jordan Lyles (2-1) lasted five innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on eight hits with three strikeouts.

BRAVES 3, REDS 1

CINCINNATI (AP) - Ozzie Albies homered on the game's first pitch and Ronald Acuna Jr. scored from first base on Yasiel Puig's fifth-inning error, helping Atlanta beat Cincinnati.

Acuna scored easily when Puig misplayed Nick Markakis's line drive single to right, allowing it to skip under his glove and roll to the wall for a two-base error.

Mike Soroka (1-1), in his second start of the season and seventh of his career, tied his career high with seven strikeouts while allowing five hits and one run with three walks in 5 2/3 innings.

A.J. Minter pitched a perfect ninth for his third save.

Tanner Roark (1-1) got through five innings, allowing six hits and two runs with three walks and four strikeouts. He also hit a batter.

ORIOLES 4, WHITE SOX 3

BALTIMORE (AP) - Stevie Wilkerson hit his first major league homer, John Means pitched five effective innings on his birthday and Baltimore beat Chicago.

Baltimore won two of three to capture its first series since April 1-3 in Toronto. The two straight victories are the Orioles' most since a four-game run that began at Yankee Stadium on March 30.

Wilkerson's second-chance solo shot off Ervin Santana (0-2) put the Orioles up 4-1 in the fourth. Earlier in the at-bat, Wilkerson walked to first base after apparently being hit by a pitch, but a replay proved otherwise.

Means (3-2) marked his 26th birthday with a career-high six strikeouts. The lefty allowed one run and four hits.

Mychal Givens worked the final two innings for his first save.

Thursday?s 6-pack

Odds to win the two Eastern Divisions in the NFL this year:

NFC East:

even: Philadelphia Eagles

5-4: Dallas Cowboys

8-1: Washington Redskins

14-1: New Jersey Giants

AFC East:
1-6: New England Patriots

5-1: New Jersey Jets

12-1: Buffalo Bills

50-1: Miami Dolphins

Quote of the Day
?Good coaches are trying to reinforce players in practice after every play. So, they?re telling them you did this well, or you need to do it this way or you made a mental error and need to get it corrected. You?re trying to reinforce guys on every play. Sometimes, players kind of depend on that reinforcement all the time in practice, but in the game, there?s no coach out there.?
Nick Saban

Thursday?s quiz
When was the last time a QB from the Big 14 (Michigan, Ohio St, etc?) was taken in the first round of the NFL Draft?

Wednesday?s quiz
USC is the only college football program in country that has had the #1 pick in NFL Draft two years in a row; Ron Yary/OJ Simpson, back in the late 60?s.

Tuesday?s quiz
In the movie Draft Day, Denis Leary played the coach of the Cleveland Browns.

***********************

Thursday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??

13) RIP to Ole Miss basketball star Johnny Neumann, who passed away this week after a long illness at age 68. Neumann led the nation in scoring as a sophomore at 40.1 ppg; he left school early to play in the ABA, but got his degree from Ole Miss in 2016, at age 65.

Neumann played for nine teams in seven seasons in the ABA/NBA, scoring 13.2 ppg.

12) He also coached in the old CBA; I know this because we had a team here in Albany, and one night, Neumann got tossed out of a game here. A few minutes later, he showed up in the corner of the small arena, watching the game while sipping a beer.

I went over and shook his hand and talked to him; we talked for 15-20 minutes about his playing career and basketball in general. Good guy. Hope he rests in peace.

11) Interesting article on SI.com this week about how teams gather information for the NFL Draft; couple years ago, one GM sent a message to a second GM that he wasn?t interested in a certain player, but the second GM should take him.

The second GM didn?t believe the first one?s message; he traded up ahead of him, then took the player in question. Paranoia runs rampant this week.

10) Another interesting aspect of the days before he draft is how some teams utilize the media to gain knowledge. Late night text messages, asking a media person if anyone else had mentioned something about Player A being injured. Some of the national reporters are pretty well-informed and can be useful conduits for information.

9) 20 years ago this week, Fernando Tatis Sr hit two grand slams in the same game at Dodger Stadium; odd thing is, he hit both of them off the same pitcher (Chan Ho Park).

8) Coaching carousel:
? Northern Kentucky hired former coach South Carolina/Western Kentucky coach Darrin Horn as its new coach.

7) Temple?s new basketball coach Aaron McKie has already signed up three transfers, one each from Indiana, Wisconsin, Kennesaw State.

6) Milwaukee Brewers signed P Gio Gonzalez; only once in their last 13 games has the Brewers? starting pitcher finished the 6th inning.

So far this season, Milwaukee has scored 71% of its runs via the home run, which would be a major league record if they did that all year.

5) In case you were wondering, Merriam-Webster added 640 new words/terms to the dictionary in this year?s edition, including ?peak?, ?buzzy? and ?garbage time?

4) Not sure if I knew this or not: If an NFL player suffers a season-ending injury in a voluntary workout, he is paid for that season. In reality, ?voluntary workouts? aren?t voluntary, unless you are one of the team?s stars.

3) If they ever make the movie Draft Day 2, they could take notes on Kyler Murray?s winter and run the plot around that. More and more, this kid seems like kind of an odd duck.

Murray was scheduled to be at a charity event Wednesday, but he ended up being a no-show, because ?he had other places to be.? You want to be the #1 pick in the draft and you blow off a charity event the day before the draft? Oy.

2) Prayers to Kelly Stafford, wife of Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford, who had an operation to remove a brain tumor last week and is now trying to recover at home. Very painful thing; we wish her the best in her recovery.

1) The NFL Draft starts tonight; finally, no more mock drafts and fake news with teams lying about who they?re interested or not interested in. They stretch this out over three days now, but it is fun to watch.

Next year, it?ll be even more fun to watch; the 2020 NFL Draft is in Las Vegas, and I?ll be there to see it, which figures to be an interesting experience.

Seattle Slew Of Runs?

The Texas Rangers have recalled LHP Taylor Hearn from Triple-A to make his major league debut on Thursday night opposite Mariners LHP Marco Gonzales at T-Mobile Park in Seattle. The Rangers originally wanted to keep their Top 10 prospect from making the bigs until around or after the All-Star break, but they used RHP Adrian Sampson in relief on Wednesday, and they decided to pull the trigger on Hearn now. The over has connected in four of the past five games for the Rangers inside the American League West Division, and it has hit in five of the past six games against teams with a winning record, too. The over is also 4-0 in the past four following a loss for Texas. And, for whatever it's worth, the over is 7-1 in the past eight games on a Thursday for the Rangers.

The over has connected in six straight home games for the Mariners against a left-handed starting pitcher, while going 6-0 in their past six overall vs. LHP, too. In addition, the M's have gotten off to a high-scoring start lately, hitting the over in Game 1 in each of their past six series. The over hasn't been popular in starts by LHP Marco Gonzales, however, as the under is 3-0-1 in his past four starts, while going 4-1 in the past five home outings by Gonzo. The under is also 4-1 in his past five starts against AL West foes, too. In this series, the under is 4-1 in the past five meetings, and 4-1 in the past five battles at T-Mobile Park, too.

Looking Ahead

Thursday, April 25

The Marlins and Phillies tangle in the City of Brotherly Love, and Philadelphia RHP Aaron Nola is looking for a little consistency. He is 2-0 through his first five starts across 25 innings, but he has a 6.84 ERA while the 'over' has connected in each of his first outings, including 4-0 in four outings against NL East foes. The over is also 10-3 in Game 1 of a new series for the Phillies, and 8-2 in their past 10 home games vs. LHP. For LHP Caleb Smith, the over is 4-1 in his past five road outings, and 5-2 in his past seven appearances. The under is 6-1 in Miami's past seven overall, and 4-0 in the past four against teams with a winning overall record. The under is 4-1 in their past five vs. RHP, too. In this series, the over is 4-0-1 in the past five in Philly, and 5-1 in the past six meetings overall.

The Yankees and Angels hit the over again on Wednesday, and the over is 4-1 in New York's past five overall, and 4-1 in their past five vs. RHP, too. The over is 12-2 in the past 14 road outings vs. RHP, too. However, the under is 6-1-1 in Masahiro Tanaka's past eight road outings, and 23-11 in his past 34 tries against AL West opponents. For the Halos, the over is 4-1 in their past five overall, 4-1 in the past five home games and 4-1 in the past five against teams with a winning record. However, the under is 11-4 in the past 15 in this series in Anaheim, while going 5-1 in Tanaka's past six starts against the Halos.

Wind Report

The winds will be mostly tranquil across MLB on Thursday. If wind does play a factor anywhere, it will be Fenway Park with a gentle 6-9 mph breeze blowing right to left across the infield. The winds will also be blowing in from 5-8 mph for the afternoon battle between the Dodgers and Cubs, but it will mostly be neutral.

Friday, April 26

The Orioles and Twins open a series in the Twin Cities on Friday at Target Field after a day off for each team. The over has connected in six of the past eight games overall for the O's, while the over is 4-1 in their past five games against teams with a winning record. The over is also 6-2 in their past eight vs. LHP, while going 6-1 in Alex Cobb's past seven starts. The over is also 5-2 in his past seven road outings against teams with a winning overall mark. For the Twins, the over is 5-2 in their past seven overall, and 4-1 in the past five following a scheduled day off. The over is 4-1 in the past five in this series, too.

The Angels and Royals have a battle of left-handed starting pitchers facing each other, as LHP Tyler Skaggs (ankle) returns from the 10-day injured list to face LHP Danny Duffy. The over is 9-2-1 in the past 12 road games for the Halos, and 4-0-1 in Skaggs' past five outings overall. The under is also 4-0 in the past four road games vs. LHP for the Angels. For K.C., the over has cashed in four of the past five overall, and 4-1-1 in their past six vs. LHP. In addition, the over is 19-7-3 in the past 29 home games for the Royals, while going a perfect 6-0 in Duffy's past six home outings.

The Pirates and Dodgers kick off a set in Chavez Ravine. The under is 5-2 in the past seven road outings, and 6-2 in their past eight against AL West foes. The under is also 14-6 in the past 20 on the road against teams with a winning overall record. For the Dodgers, the under is 5-0 in the past five home games, 8-1 in the past nine vs. RHP and 20-4-2 in the past 26 at home against teams with a winning overall mark. The under is also 5-1 in Hyun-Jin Ryu's past six home outings against a team with a winning record, and 8-2 in his past 10 overall against winning teams. In this series, the over is 5-0 in the past five meetings, and 6-2 in the past eight meetings in L.A.

Wind Report

The Marlins and Phillies will face very breezy conditions on Friday evening, blowing out at 14-17 mph to the left-center field power alley. That is, if the game gets underway. The forecast is calling for a 75 percent or greater chance of rain starting at 7 p.m. ET, so it wouldn't be surprising to see this one scheduled as a day-night doubleheader on Saturday. The same holds true for the Padres-Nationals game from D.C. There is a 75 percent or greater chance of rain at 7 p.m. ET, although the chances taper off to 20 percent by 11 p.m. It might be a late night in Washington, or the game could also be rescheduled. If they do play, there will be a 13-16 mph wind blowing in from the left-center field power alley into the face of the batters.

The Brewers and Mets will likely be rained out, too, with a 60 percent or greater chance of rain from 7 p.m. onward. If they do play, the winds are blowing out from 15-18 mph to left field. They'll have clear conditions in Atlanta for the Rockies-Braves game, with a jetstream blowing to left-center field at a 11-14 mph clip. For Tigers-White Sox on the south side, it will also be very clear with a brisk 11-14 mph wind blowing out to right-center field.

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Luis Castillo, Cincinnati Reds (2-1, 1.47 ERA, $84):
It looks like 2019 could be the breakout campaign for the Reds electric right-hander. Castillo has been nearly unhittable this season, limiting opponents with a 0.88 WHIP and a .250 on base percentage, while racking up 41 punch outs. Castillo will look to stay hot as he and the Reds host the Braves tonight. The Reds are currently -138 faves with a total of 9.

SLUMPING

Jordan Zimmermann, Detroit Tigers (0-3, 4.94 ERA, $20):
Zimmermann has cooled off after a hot start to the season. The Tigers have lost his last three starts thanks to his 9.22 ERA and 1.83 WHIP in those games. He?ll look to get back on track when he and the Tigers visit the Red Sox tonight. The Tigers are currently +188 road dogs.

3 STRIKES

CALLING IT TIGHT

Umpire Phil Cuzzi has been a pitcher?s dream early on this season. He is ringing up almost five times as many batters as he gives passes to first base and has a very high 64.5 percent strike rate. The Under has gone a perfect 4-0 in the games where he been behind home plate as a result. He will be calling balls and strikes tonight in Cincinnati when the Reds host the Braves. The total is currently 9.

A PAIR OF PUNCHOUT PITCHERS

Two of the best strikeout artists in the game do battle tonight in Houston as the Astros? Gerrit Cole faces off against the Indians? Trevor Bauer. The two right-handed hurlers rank second and fifth respectively in the MLB in strikeouts this season. The total for tonight?s matchup is currently 7.5, but keep an eye out for any strikeout props as well.

TRUE TO THE BLUE BLUES

The Mariners burst out of the gates winning 13 of their first 15 games thanks to some ridiculously hot hitting, but things have cooled off significantly since then, especially at home. The M?s have now dropped nine of their past 12 including six straight at home where they scored just 2.5 runs per game. Now, that was against the Astros and Indians and tonight?s opponent, the Rangers are not on their level. The Mariners are currently -154 favorites with a total of 8.5.
