LEADING OFF: Verlander 4-0 going into start vs. Twins
April 28, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Monday:

HOT START

Houston's Justin Verlander is 4-0 with a 2.61 ERA going into Monday night's start at Minnesota. He dominated the Twins at home last week, allowing one run and four hits in a season-high eight innings with eight strikeouts and no walks. Twins right-hander Jake Odorizzi (2-2) gave up two runs in 5 2/3 innings when he won at Houston on April 22.

OLD FOES

Right-hander Kenta Maeda (3-2) starts for the Los Angeles Dodgers in a series opener at San Francisco after giving up a season-high six earned runs against the Chicago Cubs in his last outing. Right-hander Jeff Samardzija (2-1) has lost four of five decisions in eight appearances against Los Angeles.

HE'S BACK

Right-hander Michael Wacha (1-0) starts for St. Louis at Washington in the opener of a four-game series in his return from the 10-day injured list. Wacha missed one turn because of left knee patellar tendinitis. Left-hander Patrick Corbin (2-0) starts on five days' rest for the Nationals.

SUCCESS STORY

Right-hander Tanner Roark (1-1) is 8-4 in 22 career starts against the Mets going into his start at New York against right-hander Zack Wheeler (2-2) in the opener of a four-game series.

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Patrick Corbin, Washington Nationals (2-0, 2.48 ERA, $-15):
Corbin has settled in nicely with his new team, since signing a big contract this offseason. He has so far rewarded the Nationals with a quality start in five of his first five games. And he has been getting better with each start. Corbin has pitched to a 1.74 ERA and a 0.68 WHIP over his past three starts and he?ll look to stay hot when the Nats host the Cardinals tonight. Washington is currently a -144 favorite with a total of 8.5.

SLUMPING

Kenta Maeda, Los Angeles Dodgers (3-2, 5.20 ERA, $94):
The Dodgers right-hander has swapped good and bad starts this season, but with two of his last three falling in the bad category Maeda gets dubbed our Slumping Starter for today.

Maeda has seemed to battle his control all season, issuing 13 walks in his five starts, including seven over his past three. In those three games he owns a 6.75 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP. Maeda will try to get back on track when the Dodgers begin a three-game set in San Francisco. The Dodgers are currently -154 road faves with a total of 7.5.

BIG UNDER MACHINE

The Reds continue to be an Under bettor?s dream. Excellent pitching with terrible hitting as evidenced by yesterday?s 5-2 loss to the Cardinals. With the loss the Under is now 20-6-1 in the Reds 27 games this season. Cincinnati ranks third in team ERA this season, while ranking dead last in batting average, so this trend seems sustainable for the time being. The Reds send Tanner Roark to the bump to counter the Mets Zack Wheeler. The total for tonight?s game in New York is currently 8.

Odorizzi edges Verlander as Twins beat Astros 1-0
April 29, 2019
By The Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Jake Odorizzi pitched seven solid innings to outduel Justin Verlander, Ehire Adrianza homered off Houston's ace and the Minnesota Twins beat the Astros 1-0 on Monday night.

Odorizzi (3-2) gave up four hits while beating Houston for the second time in two starts. He walked one and struck out seven, and Minnesota won for the eighth time in 10 games. Blake Parker recorded his sixth save.

Adrianza's first homer of the season led off the third. He hit a towering, deep shot to the plaza in right field on a full count against Verlander (4-1), who allowed two hits, walked two and struck out seven over six innings.

Coming off a dominant sweep of Baltimore, the Twins faced Houston for the second time in a week. They also saw Verlander in the previous series, when he gave up one run and needed just 98 pitches to get through eight innings.

BREWERS 5, ROCKIES 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Struggling slugger Jesus Aguilar hit his first two homers of the season and Milwaukee beat Colorado with NL MVP Christian Yelich sidelined by lower back soreness.

Zach Davies allowed an unearned run in five 1/3 innings, and Milwaukee opened a 10-game homestand with a breakout game from its beefy first baseman.

Aguilar entered hitting .123 after accruing 35 homers and 108 RBIs last season. He had a three-run homer in the first and added a solo shot in the third, both off Kyle Freeland (2-4). Aguilar also singled in the eighth and had four RBIs.

Davies (3-0) allowed just three hits and lowered his ERA to 1.38. He struck out two and walked three. Alex Claudio, Jay Jackson and Donnie Hart combined to retire 11 of the final 12 hitters.

RED SOX 9, ATHLETICS 4

BOSTON (AP) - Xander Bogaerts hit a tying two-run double that sailed over the head of center fielder Ramon Laureano, who made a bad read during a six-run third inning.

Rookie Michael Chavis drove in three and Mookie Betts had three singles for Boston, which had lost two straight to AL East-leading Tampa Bay.

Ryan Brasier (1-0) got four outs and was credited with the victory after starter Eduardo Rodriguez failed to go five innings with Boston leading. Matt Barnes got the final two outs on two pitches for his second save after Oakland loaded the bases.

Jurickson Profar had a two-run single for Oakland, which lost its fourth straight. Frankie Montas (4-2) gave up seven runs, one earned, in 4 1/3 innings.

CARDINALS 6, NATIONALS 3

WASHINGTON (AP) - Harrison Bader homered to spark a six-run fifth inning as surging St. Louis rallied past Patrick Corbin and Washington in the opener of a four-game series.

Marcell Ozuna put the Cardinals ahead 4-3 with a two-run single. Jose Martinez had an RBI double, and Yadier Molina added a run-scoring single off Corbin (2-1), who took a 3-0 lead into the fifth.

Michael Wacha (2-0) went five innings after being activated from the 10-day injured list earlier in the day. The right-hander allowed three runs and four hits while striking out five.

Jordan Hicks pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his ninth save.

BRAVES 3, PADRES 1

ATLANTA (AP) - Ozzie Albies homered and drove in two, Mike Soroka gave up one run in six innings and Atlanta beat San Diego.

Soroka (2-1) allowed four hits, struck out a career-high eight and walked one. The 21-year-old right-hander lowered his ERA to 1.62.

Rookie right-hander Jacob Webb recorded the final two outs for his first save, one day after his first win. Webb struck out pinch-hitter Wil Myers to end the game.

Nick Margevicius (2-3) allowed three runs, one earned, on four hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings.

REDS 5, METS 4

NEW YORK (AP) - Jesse Winker homered off All-Star closer Edwin Diaz with two outs in the ninth inning, and Cincinnati beat New York after wasting a four-run lead.

Left-handed batters had been 0 for 15 this year against Diaz (0-1) before Winker drove a fastball over the right-center field fence for his career-high eighth home run, the most by a Reds player this season. Diaz was pitching for the third straight day for the first time this season.

Raisel Iglesias (1-3) pitched two innings, striking out his last four batters.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Westgate SuperBook posted NFL win totals for 2019:

? Arizona Cardinals, 5

? Atlanta Falcons, 8.5

? Baltimore Ravens, 8.5, over -$120

? Buffalo Bills, 6.5, over -$160

? Carolina Panthers, 8, under -$120

? Chicago Bears, 9, under -$120

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??

13) 76ers 94, Raptors 89- Kawhi Leonard was 13-24 from floor; rest of Toronto?s team was 20-67 (29.9%). Series is tied, 1-1.

12) Ben Simmons is a weird player; I think he?s one of the five best passers I?ve ever seen, but it almost seems like he defiantly refuses to become a shooting threat.

In this game, Simmons played 44:00, was 3-6 from floor. No foul shots, no 3?s. He had seven rebounds, five assists. Someone who has the ball as much as Simmons does takes six shots in 44:00? Very unusual.

11) Nuggets 121, Trailblazers 113? Jokic had 37 points, nine rebounds, six assists as Denver takes the first game of this series. Nuggets are 41-5 at home this season.

10) Today?s unusual stat from Dan Hayes: Max Kepler?s 10-pitch walk in the 1st inning vs Justin Verlander Monday night was the 76th time Verlander has thrown 10 pitches in a plate appearance among the 11,497 batters (0.6%) he has faced in his great career.

9) Tennessee basketball coach Rick Barnes parlayed his dalliance with UCLA into a 5-year, $26M contract extension with the Vols.

8) Texas Tech basketball coach Chris Beard signed a six-year contract that will pay him $4.575M annually, through the 2024-25 season. His annual salary is now 4th-highest in the country, behind John Calipari, Mike Krzyzewski and Barnes.

7) Baseball injuries:
? Giants put P Derek Holland (finger) on the IL.
? Braves put P Chad Sobotka (abdomen) on the IL.
? A?s put 1B/OF Mark Canha (wrist) on the IL.
? Brewers put P Aaron Wilkerson (foot) on the IL.

6) New England Patriots ranked 25th in NFL LY with a 53.8% touchback rate on kickoffs, so it is possible that the punter they traded up to draft in the 5th round will also be used as a kickoff guy, seeing how PK Stephen Gostkowski is 35 now. Field position is important.

5) James Harden led the NBA in foul shots attempted in five of the last seven years, and finished 2nd/3rd the other two seasons.

4) Blues 4, Stars 3? St Louis wins a road game, is up 2-1 in this series.

3) Giants 3, Dodgers 2? Evan Longoria?s bases loaded double in the 7th inning was the game-winning hit.

2) Reds 5, Mets 4? Jesse Winker?s 9th-inning homer decided this one. It was the first hit that Mets? closer Edwin Diaz allowed to a lefty batter this season.

1) I?d be curious to know how much NFL teams value if a prospect played for a winning program in college. I?m not 100% sold that playing on a winning team is that big a deal; sometimes your deficiencies can be hidden if you?re surrounded by superior athletes.

But I?d be more interested in how NFL teams feel than how I think about it.

LEADING OFF: Sabathia goes for 3,000 Ks, Yelich hobbled
April 29, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

MISTER 3,000

CC Sabathia (1-0, 2.40 ERA) needs three strikeouts for 3,000 when the New York Yankees visit Arizona. The 38-year-old veteran, who plans to retire after this season, is trying to join Randy Johnson and Steve Carlton as the only left-handers to reach the milestone. Sabathia would become the 17th member of the club and first to enter since John Smoltz in 2008. With 13 players on the injured list, the depleted Yankees (17-11) have still managed to win three straight and 11 of 13. But in Arizona, they will be facing a team that currently has a winning record for only the second series this season. New York was swept by Houston in three games from April 8-10.

INJURY WATCH

Some of the game's top stars have hobbled into the work week. NL MVP Christian Yelich sat out Monday, a day after the Brewers right fielder left a game with lower back soreness. Mets second baseman Robinson Cano has a swollen hand after being hit by a pitch, but X-rays and an MRI were negative. Padres rookie Fernando Tatis Jr. was held out Monday with a hamstring injury. He was hurt during an awkward-looking split stretching for a throw at second base Sunday. All three are considered day to day.

SINKING SHIP

Looking to snap an eight-game losing streak, the Pittsburgh Pirates open an interleague series at Texas. Jordan Lyles (2-1, 2.05 ERA) starts against a Rangers team that has scored 29 runs over its past two games.

ALL HEALED

Twins third baseman Miguel Sano will begin an injury rehab assignment with Class A Fort Myers after recovering from a right heel laceration. Sano missed all of spring training and the start of the season after cutting his right foot falling down metal steps celebrating a winter league championship in the Dominican Republic. Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said Sano will start with partial games at Fort Myers and build himself up. Sano is expected to make stops in Double-A and Triple-A during a lengthy assignment.

Aguilar homers, Brewers come through late to beat Rockies
April 30, 2019
By The Associated Press

PHOENIX (AP) CC Sabathia became the 17th player in major league history and third left-hander to reach 3,000 career strikeouts, but was outpitched by Arizona ace Zack Greinke in the Diamondbacks' 3-1 win over the New York Yankees Tuesday night.

Sabathia (1-1) arrived in the desert needing three strikeouts to hit 3,000 and got them all in the third inning.

The milestone whiff came when he got John Ryan Murphy swinging, sending the Yankees pouring out of the dugout.

Sabathia became the first pitcher to reach 3,000 strikeouts since Atlanta's John Smoltz in 2008, and joined Randy Johnson and Steve Carlton as the only lefties to do it.

Wilmer Flores hit a solo homer and a run-scoring single off Sabathia. He allowed two runs and five hits, and struck out five before being lifted with two on and one out in the sixth inning.

Greinke (5-1) won his fifth straight game. He allowed one run on five hits in 7 2/3 innings.

BREWERS 4, ROCKIES 3

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Jesus Aguilar homered again and Milwaukee, held without a runner for five innings, broke through late and beat Colorado.

Jhoulys Chacin pitched six scoreless innings for the Brewers. Milwaukee has won 12 of its last 14 against Colorado, including a sweep in last season's NL Division Series.

The Brewers again played without NL MVP Christian Yelich, who sat out with lower back soreness for the second straight game.

German Marquez (3-2) took a perfect game into the sixth before surrendering a leadoff double to Ben Gamel that hit left fielder Raimel Tapia's glove. Gamel later scored.

Chacin (3-3) allowed just two hits over six innings.

Josh Hader got two outs for his seventh save in as many tries despite giving up a two-out, two-run homer to Ian Desmond in the ninth.

ASTROS 11, TWINS 0

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Gerrit Cole allowed one hit in seven innings, and Houston backed him with three homers.

Cole (2-4) gave up his only hit in the sixth inning while the Astros broke out offensively to win a meeting of division leaders and snap Minnesota's four-game winning streak.

George Springer, Jake Marisnick and Alex Bregman went deep for Houston.

Cole struck out 11 and walked three, including the first two batters of the game. Relievers Josh James and Chris Devenski completed the three-hitter.

PIRATES 6, RANGERS 4, 11 INNINGS

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Bryan Reynolds led off the 11th inning with his first career homer and Starling Marte then added a two-run shot as Pittsburgh ended its eight-game losing streak by beating Texas.

The Pirates were scoreless until getting three runs in the ninth off closer Jose Leclerc.

Reynolds led off the 11th with a blast off Jesse Chavez (0-1) that landed on the hill in center field.

Kyle Crick (1-1) pitched a perfect 10th. Felipe Vazquez worked the 11th for his seventh save after allowing Joey Gallo's leadoff homer - his 10th.

METS 4, REDS 3, 10 INNINGS

NEW YORK (AP) - Rookie Pete Alonso hit a game-winning sacrifice fly off Cincinnati closer Raisel Iglesias in the 10th inning, and New York rebounded from a blown ninth-inning lead.

J.D. Davis doubled to left-center to cap a 10-pitch at-bat leading off the 10th against Iglesias (1-4). Jeff McNeil singled sharply to put runners at the corners with his fourth hit of the game.

With the infield in and outfield shallow, Alonso hit a fly to the warning track in right and the Mets avoided dropping below .500 for the first time this year.

Rookie Drew Gagnon (1-0) escaped a two-out jam in the 10th by getting Jose Iglesias to pop out. Jeurys Familia fell one out short of his second regular-season six-out save, allowing two runs in the ninth.

RED SOX 5, ATHLETICS 1

BOSTON (AP) - Rick Porcello pitched eight shutout innings and struck out a season-high eight as Boston beat Oakland.

Porcello (2-3) allowed only two hits and walked two while winning his second straight start.

Mookie Betts and Mitch Moreland homered for Boston and the Red Sox won for the fourth time in six games.

Aaron Brooks (2-3) pitched 4 1/3 innings for Oakland, allowing five runs on six hits and three walks.

INDIANS 7, MARLINS 4

MIAMI (AP) - Carlos Gonzalez hit a tiebreaking three-run homer, only his second extra-base hit of the season, and Cleveland beat Miami.

Trevor Bauer (4-1) overcame a slow start to pitch seven innings. He allowed four runs and struck out 10.

Curtis Granderson hit his fourth homer for the Marlins, who lost their fourth game in a row and have the worst record in the majors.

Gonzalez's homer off Sandy Alcantara (1-3) broke a 3-3 tie in the third.

Former Marlin Brad Hand completed a five-hitter by pitching a perfect ninth for his ninth save in as many chances.

DODGERS 10, GIANTS 3

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - David Freese hit a three-run homer, Justin Turner went deep for the first time this season and Los Angeles beat San Francisco.

Kike Hernandez also connected, and Walker Buehler (3-0) pitched into the sixth inning to remain unbeaten in six starts.

Dodgers slugger Cody Bellinger singled, walked and scored twice, but was denied in his bid to break the major league record for most home runs before May 1. Bellinger has 14 homers so far this season.

Freese homered for the first time since April 11, driving a 3-2 pitch from Drew Pomeranz (1-3) deep to right in the fourth.

TIGERS 3, PHILLIES 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Miguel Cabrera had an RBI single and Niko Goodrum added a two-run homer to lift Detroit past Philadelphia.

Spencer Turnbull (2-2) pitched six strong innings as the Tigers snapped a four-game skid.

Cabrera moved into a tie for 68th all-time with 2,705 career hits

It was the Tigers' first meeting with the Phillies since 2016 and their first trip to Philadelphia since 2007.

Shane Greene pitched a scoreless ninth for his 12th save in as many chances.

Vince Velasquez (1-1) needed 99 pitches to get through 3 2/3 innings before being lifted. Velasquez gave up three runs and six hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.

CARDINALS 3, NATIONALS 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Adam Wainwright pitched neatly into the seventh inning, helping himself by kicking the ball over to first for a key out, and St. Louis beat Washington.

Harrison Bader drove in two runs and Kolten Wong had two hits as NL Central-leading St. Louis earned its fourth straight victory. It was the Cardinals' 18th win in April, matching a team record set in 2008.

Wainwright (3-2) allowed two runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Tyler Webb, John Gant and Andrew Miller combined for 2 2/3 innings of one-hit ball. Miller got two outs for his first save with St. Louis.

Anibal Sanchez (0-4) struck out seven in five innings.

PADRES 4, BRAVES 3

ATLANTA (AP) - Franmil Reyes homered twice and drove in three runs, Eric Hosmer also went deep and rookie Chris Paddack turned in another impressive start, leading San Diego past Atlanta.

Reyes homered on the 11th pitch of the game, followed by another solo shot in the sixth to break a 2-2 tie.

Paddack (2-1) went six innings, surrendering only a two-out, two-run single to Matt Joyce in the second.

Julio Teheran (2-4) became the ninth pitcher in Braves' franchise history to start 200 games, but he had no answer for Reyes.

Craig Stammen gave up a run-scoring single to Ronald Acuna Jr. in the eighth, but Kirby Yates worked a scoreless ninth for his major league-leading 14th save in as many chances.

Wednesday?s 6-pack

The Athletic?s NBA Mock Draft

1) Zion Williamson, Duke

2) Ja Morant, Murray State

3) RJ Barrett, Duke

4) Darius Garland, Vanderbilt

5) Jarrett Culver, Texas Tech

6) De?Andre Hunter, Virginia

Quote of the Day
?They have to win the division. This is a put-up-or-shut-up season for them, especially for Clay Helton. I?m looking to see drastic improvements. People have to be held accountable and players have to be held accountable. They have to create an environment there where players really understand the tradition of winning that came before them.?
USC alum Reggie Bush, talking about the Trojans? football team

Wednesday?s quiz
Which NBA general manager holds the Toronto Blue Jays? franchise record for youngest player to hit a home run?

Tuesday?s quiz
Spurs, Pacers, Nets, Nuggets came to the NBA when the ABA folded in 1976.

Monday?s quiz
In the football movie Invincible, which is a true story. a 30-year old bartender tried out for and made the Philadelphia Eagles as a special teams player in 1976.

***********************

Wednesday?s List of 13: Mid-week musings??.

13) Last year, the Arizona Cardinals spent a lot of $$$ on quarterbacks:
? They paid Sam Bradford $16M; he played three games.
? They paid Josh Rosen $11.5M; he lives in Miami now.
? They paid Mike Glennon $5M; he lives in Oakland now.

Now the Cardinals? QB?s are Kyler Murray, Brett Hundley and two guys I?ve never heard of, free agents from Murray State and Princeton. Kyler Murray better be the real deal.

12) No idea how NFL teams will handle their rookie QB?s this year, but last season, all five first-round quarterbacks were playing by midseason, so there?s that.

11) Interesting article in the Los Angeles Times about UCLA?s search for a new basketball coach; Bruins offered to double Jay Wright?s salary, but the Villanova coach turned them down. When a coach declines having his salary doubled, thats a major red flag.

Similar to Loyola coach Porter Moser turning down St John?s, when they offered to more than double his salary. Turning down a Big East job to stay at Loyola was an eye-opener.

10) So far this baseball season, relief pitchers have a worse ERA than starting pitchers; that hasn?t happened over a full season in fifty years. Starting pitchers need to last longer in games; there is too much strain being put on bullpens.

9) There are 127 I-A college football teams; for some reason, in 2020 there will be three new bowl games, bringing the total (for now) to 43.

Fenway Park, Myrtle Beach and the new dome in Los Angeles get the new bowl games; why do baseball stadiums in Boston/New York have bowl games? These games are in December; warm weather cities seem like a better bowl destination.

Do kids want to freeze their butts off in a bowl game? I think not.

With 43 bowls, teams with losing records will go to bowls, which also isn?t ideal.

8) 233 players have declared for early entry to the NBA Draft; players have until late May to pull their names from the draft. NBA Draft is two rounds- 60 players get picked, so do the math, then add in the seniors who will also be involved.

If you?re not a first round pick, go back to school. Become a better player. Unless you want to play in the G-League or in Europe.

7)

6) Harden led the NBA in foul shots attempted in six of last seven years; he led the NBA in free throws made the last five years in a row. He is obviously used to getting calls.

5) Baseball stuff:
? Dodgers put OF AJ Pollock (elbow) on IL.
? Nationals put 3B Anthony Rendon (elbow) on DL.
? Padres put SS Fernando Tatis (hamstring) on DL
? Mariners sent OF Mallex Smith to AAA because he can?t hit.

4) Ranger College basketball coach Billy Gillispie was named JUCO Coach of the Year this week, after leading Ranger to a 31-4 record this year- they played in the NJCAA championship game.

The former head coach at Kentucky, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and UTEP, Gillispie returned to coaching this season after a kidney transplant. Good for him.

3) Tim Mead was named this week as the new vice-president of National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Mead represented the Los Angels Angels for the last 40 years, under three owners, nine managers and six interim managers, last 22 years as the team?s vice president of communications.

Not often you see a guy get a new job, followed by a flood of 100% positive tweets giving the thumbs up to the hire. Everyone really likes this guy, so good for the Hall of Fame.

2) Milwaukee Bucks are now 19-4 vs spread this season in the game following a loss.

1) Wake Forest signed football coach Dave Clawson to an 8-year contract extension; Wake is the smallest school that has big-time college football. Tough job.
