Low, Low Halo?

The Los Angeles Angels host the Toronto Blue Jays in the final game of a three-game set, as the Halos go for the sweep. The under has connected in five of the past seven games for the Blue Jays, although Wednesday's game snuck over the line with nine total runs on a 8.5 number. The under is 8-2-1 in Toronto's past 12 games against a left-handed starting pitcher, although the over is 3-1-1 in their past five on the road vs. LHP. The over is also 9-2-1 in the past 12 road outings by RHP Aaron Sanchez, while going 6-1-1 in the past eight oad outings against a team with a losing record, and 9-4 in his past 13 starts overall. The over is also 5-1 in their past six games overall on the road against teams with a losing record.

For the Angels, the over is 4-1 in their past five games at home, and 6-2 in the past eight games overall. The over is 4-1 in their past five against teams with a losing record, and 4-1 in the past five against AL East clubs, too. The over is 7-1 in the past eight games vs. RHP, while going 5-1 in the past six home outings vs. RHP. However, the under is a perfect 4-0 in each of LHP Tyler Skaggs' starts this season, while going 4-1 in his past five home outings dating back to last season. The over, however, is 9-4-1 in the past 14 home starts by Skaggs against teams with a losing overall mark.

Looking Ahead

Thursday, May 2

The Cardinals and Nationals hook up in the fourth of a four-game set, and St. Louis is looking for the sweep. The over is 13-6-1 in the past 20 road games for the Cardinals, while going 11-5-1 in the past 17 away from home against a right-handed starting pitcher. The over is also 8-2-1 in the past 11 against NL East teams, although the under is 3-0-1 in the past four vs. RHP and 3-1-1 in their past five games overall. The over is 35-17-2 in the past 54 home games for the Nationals, while going 9-4 in their past 13 games against teams with a winning percentage over .600.

RHP Stephen Strasburg starts for the Nats, and the over is an incredible 37-12-2 in the past 51 home starts, while going 6-2 in his past eight starts overall. The over is also 4-0 in the past four starts against NL Central teams, and 21-5-1 in the past 27 home outings against teams with a winning overall record. The over is also 4-0 in his past four outings against teams from the NL Central.

The Red Sox and White Sox battle on the south side. The under is 7-0-1 in the past eight by LHP David Price, and 4-0-1 in the past five road outings by the southpaw. The under is also 4-1 in his past five road outings against teams with a losing overall record. For the White Sox, the under is 5-2-1 in the past eight games at home, 6-1-1 in their past eight home games against a losing team and 5-1 in their past six vs. LHP. However, the over is 6-1 in RHP Lucas Giolito's past seven starts, and 7-1 in his past eight outings at home.

Wind Report

The only place the conditions will affect the game play will be on the south side of Chicago, as the wind will be blowing out from 10-13 mph. That could potentially affect the total.

Friday, May 3

The Athletics and Pirates kick off an interleague series in the Steel City on Friday, with LHP Brett Anderson taking on RHP Joe Musgrove. The under is 16-5-2 in the past 23 interleague games for the A's, while going a perfect 7-0 in their past seven interleague road games vs. RHP. However, the over is 4-1 in Anderson's past five starts, while going 3-1-1 in the past five road starts by Anderson. The over is also 4-0 in his past four starts on a grass surface. For the Bucs, the under is 5-2 in the past seven at home, and 5-1 in their past six interleague home games. The under is also a perfect 5-0 in the past five against teams with a losing record, and 4-1 in the past five home games vs. LHP.

The Mariners and Indians kick off a three-game set on Friday night in Cleveland. The over has been plentiful for the M's, going 21-8-2 in the past 31 games overall and 10-2-1 in the past 13 road outings. The over is also 9-2-1 in their past 12 road games vs. RHP, and 3-1-1 in the past five overall against righties. The over is also 5-0-1 in LHP Yusei Kikuchi's past six outings overall. For the Tribe, the under is 5-0-1 in the past six against AL West clubs. The under is also 6-1-1 in their past eight overall, while going 4-1 in RHP Shane Bieber's past five starts. The under is also 5-0-1 in the past six against teams with a winning record.

It's a southpaw battle when Dodgers LHP Clayton Kershaw and Padres LHP Eric Lauer hook up in San Diego. Surprisingly, the over is 6-0 in Kershaw's past six road starts, and 5-0 in his past five on the road against teams with a winning overall mark. The over is also 3-1-1 in the past five against winning teams. The over is 6-2 in L.A.'s past eight against southpaws, too, and 11-4-1 in the past 16 against AL West foes. For the Padres it's the exact opposite. The under is 5-1 in the past six at home, and 7-2 in their past nine vs. LHP. The under is also 5-0 in the past five at home vs. LHP. The under is 8-3-1 in the past 12 overall for the Padres, but the over is 4-1 in Lauer's past five starts overall. In this series, the over is 5-0-1 in the past six meetings in this series, and the over is 9-2 in the past 11 starts by Kershaw against the Padres.

Wind Report

The winds will be gusting in from the left-center field power alley into the face of the batters at 10-12 mph for the Cardinals-Cubs afternoon game at Wrigley Field. On the south side, the Red Sox and White Sox will be affected by 10-13 mph winds blowing from third base to first base, potentially affect the power stroke of right-handed batters.

LEADING OFF: Kluber's broken forearm checked, Ohtani eager
May 1, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

KLUBER HURT

Indians ace Corey Kluber will be re-evaluated in Cleveland, a day after a line drive in Miami broke his right forearm. There was no early word on how long the two-time AL Cy Young Award winner would be out.

The right-hander was put in a cast after being struck by Brian Anderson's liner. Kluber has a 5.80 ERA this season for the AL Central champions.

ALL SET?

Shohei Ohtani says he's disappointed he won't return to the Los Angeles Angels' lineup this week. The AL Rookie of the Year says he's ready to play whenever the team allows it.

Ohtani had Tommy John surgery Oct. 1, and he is currently taking the final rehab steps for his return. Although he won't travel with the Angels for their series in Monterrey, Mexico, this weekend, he could be ready to play when the Angels visit Detroit on Tuesday.

The two-way star isn't expected to pitch this season while recovering from the elbow surgery, but is expected back in the batter's box soon.

TRY AGAIN

Noah Syndergaard (1-3, 6.45 ERA) tries to get on track when the Mets finish a 10-game homestand with a 12:10 p.m. matinee against Cincinnati. Syndergaard has lost his last two outings and hasn't gone more than five innings in any of his past three, allowing 14 earned runs and 27 hits over 15 innings during that span. But he is 4-0 with a 2.67 ERA in five career starts vs. Cincinnati.

SIMMERING

Jacob Rhame and the Triple-A Syracuse Mets finish a series against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs with a 10:35 a.m. game in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The matchup between the top affiliates from New York and Philadelphia got off to a testy start this week. As Rhame warmed up Monday night, the video board at the ballpark played a clip of Rhys Hoskins taking a 34-second trot around the bases after homering off the reliever last week at Citi Field. The homer came a day after Rhame buzzed Hoskins with a couple of pitches - Rhame was suspended two games and later sent to the minors.

Syndergaard does it all in Mets' 1-0 win over Reds
May 2, 2019
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Noah Syndergaard became the first pitcher in 36 years to homer and throw a shutout in a 1-0 victory, lifting the New York Mets over the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday.

Syndergaard (2-3) struck out 10 and allowed four hits in his third career complete game, shaking off a sloppy start to the season with a do-it-all effort. He became the first Mets starter to get an out in the eighth this season, and the franchise's first starter ever to go yard in a 1-0 complete-game win.

Thor did his hammering in the third inning, driving a ball 407 feet to the opposite field in left-center off Tyler Mahle (0-4).

The previous pitcher to homer in a 1-0 complete-game win was the Los Angeles Dodgers' Bob Welch against the Reds on June 17, 1983, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

NATIONALS 2, CARDINALS 1

WASHINGTON (AP) - Stephen Strasburg reached 1,500 strikeouts in fewer innings than any pitcher in major league history, and Washington beat St. Louis after a long rain delay to salvage the finale of a four-game series.

Despite the strong performance by Strasburg, the Nationals (13-17) fired pitching coach Derek Lilliquist after the game and replaced him with minor league pitching coordinator Paul Menhart. General manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement moments after the final out.

Strasburg (3-1) lasted 6 2/3 innings, giving up a run and six hits with two walks and nine strikeouts. He got opposing starter Dakota Hudson looking in the fifth for his eighth strikeout of the game and the 1,500th of his career - in 1,272 1/3 innings.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Boston left-hander Chris Sale held the previous mark, reaching 1,500 in 2017 after 1,290 innings.

Sean Doolittle struck out pinch-hitter Paul Goldschmidt with the bases loaded to end the eighth, then finished for his fourth save.

Hudson (2-2) allowed two runs, one earned, and four hits in six innings. Kolten Wong hit an RBI single and Yairo Munoz had three hits for St. Louis, which had won five straight.

TWINS 8, ASTROS 2

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Jose Berrios won his fourth straight start, Jason Castro homered off former battery mate Brad Peacock and drove in four runs, and AL-leading Minnesota beat Houston.

Backed by a six-run fourth from the Twins against Peacock (2-2), Berrios (5-1) finished seven smooth innings with seven hits and two runs allowed to push the Twins to their first season series victory over the Astros since 2013.

With 52 home runs in 29 games, the Twins have powered their way to or near the top of the league in several hitting categories.

WHITE SOX 6, RED SOX 4

CHICAGO (AP) - Nicky Delmonico hit a three-run homer with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Chicago over Boston.

It was Chicago's second straight walk-off win. Yonder Alonso had a two-run single in the nightcap of Wednesday's doubleheader against Baltimore for a 7-6 victory.

James McCann hit a two-run homer for the White Sox, who have won five of six.

Andrew Benintendi homered, J.D. Martinez had three hits and Rafael Devers drove in two runs as the Red Sox had their three-game winning streak snapped.

Chicago's rally in the ninth began with a one-out error by Devers on a grounder to third by Jose Rondon. Alonso followed with a single to put runners at the corners. Delmonico, who entered as a pinch hitter in the seventh, connected off Ryan Brasier (1-1) to win it.

Carson Fulmer (1-1) got two outs for the victory.

ROCKIES 11, BREWERS 6

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Nolan Arenado, David Dahl and Raimel Tapia homered to help Colorado earn a four-game split with Milwaukee.

Arenado had three hits, including his ninth home run this season. Dahl finished a triple short of the cycle for the Rockies, who outscored the Brewers 22-10 in the final two games of the series.

Jon Gray (3-3) allowed seven runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings with nine strikeouts.

Freddy Peralta (1-1) fell behind 7-0 by the second inning and gave up nine runs - six earned - eight hits and three walks in four innings.

RAYS 3, ROYALS 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Brandon Lowe hit a two-run homer off Wily Peralta with two outs in the ninth inning, and Tampa Bay split a four-game series with Kansas City.

Peralta (2-2) walked Daniel Robertson on four pitches leading off the ninth, and Lowe connected with two outs for his seventh home run this season.

Adam Kolarek (2-1) got the final two outs of the eighth, and Diego Castillo struck out two in a perfect ninth for his fourth save in as many chances.

PADRES 11, BRAVES 2

ATLANTA (AP) - Ian Kinsler and Wil Myers homered, Matt Strahm worked six innings and San Diego routed Atlanta to earn a split of a four-game series.

The Padres broke the game open with a five-run fifth, helped by an errant throw from Atlanta pitcher Mike Foltynewicz (0-1) that allowed four unearned runs to score. San Diego added five runs in the sixth - the first time since 2000 they have scored five runs in consecutive innings.

Strahm (1-2) took a shutout into the sixth before allowing a two-run single to Nick Markakis.

ANGELS 6, BLUE JAYS 2

? Week 11: Patriots @ Philadelphia (-1.5)

? Week 12: Packers (-1) @ San Francisco

? Week 13: Saints (-3) @ Atlanta

? Week 14: Cowboys @ Chicago (-3.5)

? Week 15: Colts @ New Orleans (-4)

Tweet of the Day

?I should feel bad for Rosen who hasn?t earned anything in the NFL yet? I was a 5th rounder & in 11 seasons 5 guys were specifically drafted to take my job. I could have (cried) about it or compete & f?ing fight for it. Period. That?s the @nfl & Life.?
Former NFL lineman David Diehl

Friday?s quiz
What is the western-most province in Canada?

Thursday?s quiz
In the basketball movie Hoosiers, Gene Hackman coached at Hickory HS.

Wednesday?s quiz
Celtics? general manager Danny Ainge holds the Toronto Blue Jays? franchise record for youngest player to hit a home run.

************************

Friday?s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here?..

13) Mets 1, Reds 0? Noah Syndergaard threw a complete game 1-0 shutout and hit a home run; this is only the 7th time this has EVER happened, and only second time since 1971. Here are the other six times this happened (thanks to Andrew Simon for the research):

? Red Ruffing 8/13/32
? Spud Chandler, 5/21/38
? Early Wynn, 5/1/59
? Jim Bunning, 5/5/65
? Juan Pizarro, 9/16/71
? Bob Welch, 6/17.83

12) %age of runs scored on home runs the last four years:
2016: 40.2%
2017: 42.3%
2018: 40.3%
2019: 43.4% (thru Monday)

Before 2016, the all-time record was 37.3%.

11) Milwaukee Brewers have pitching issues; only once in their last 18 games has their starting pitcher finished the 6th inning; in half of those 18 games, the starter didn?t even finish the 5th inning, so there has been a tremendous strain on their bullpen.

10) Pac-12 is joining the ACC, Big 14 in moving to 20 conference basketball games, starting with the 2020-21 season. This does two main things:
? Creates more programming for the Pac-12 Network.
? Decreases the opportunities for mid-majors to schedule quality non-league games.

Now, if the geniuses who run the Pac-12 would allow their network to be shown on DirecTV. then maybe the league could get the exposure it deserves.

9) Golden State Warriors? TV guy Jim Barnett was in the SF Giants? TV booth during the game Wednesday night; he was saying how when he played in the NBA (Barnett had an 11-year career, scoring 11.7 ppg), he went through four pairs of sneakers per season.

Then he was saying that nowadays, Stephen Curry wears a different pair of sneakers every game. Must make the Warriors? equipment manager?s job a real joy.

8) Apparently the family of a Chinese student admitted to Stanford in 2017 paid $6.5M to try to guarantee her spot there. My question is, why? Stanford is an excellent school, but still??

Why $6.5M? Why not $1M? Or $10M?

Is it that difficult to get into these schools? Or that lucrative to be an alumnus of one of these schools? Why not just save the $6.5M and go to a state school?

7) Baseball injuries:
? White Sox put P Carlos Rodon (edema in left arm) on IL.

6) College basketball transfer portal:
? Rutgers poaches Stony Brook grad transfer Akwasi Yeboah (16.7 ppg).

5) Wednesday night was 7th time in Jacob deGrom?s career that he?s thrown 7+ scoreless innings without getting the win in that game.

4) From the New York Post:

?Over last three fiscal years, Madison Square Garden paid CEO James Dolan $75.6M, according to a lawsuit filed on behalf of his shareholders. The average salary for CEO?s at similar companies is $17M a year.

The lawsuit claims Dolan is too focused on touring and recording as the frontman and guitarist for his band JD & the Straight Shot. In 2017 the band performed 50 times in six countries and 41 US cities.?

Lot fewer people would complain about Dolan if the Knicks didn?t suck every year. They?ve missed the playoffs the last six years, haven?t won an NBA title since 1973. NHL?s Rangers haven?t won the Stanley Cup since 1994; that is their only title since 1940- they missed the playoffs the last two years.

3) There are 16 players in the Pro Football Hall of Fame who weren?t drafted.

2) Sounds like Auburn is going to have a freshman QB starting this fall, which isn?t always good for a coach?s job security.

1) Get well soon to Celtics? GM Danny Ainge, who suffered a mild heart attack in Milwaukee Tuesday night. He received immediate medical attention and is expected to make a full recovery.

LEADING OFF: Vlad Jr. in Texas, MLB-best Twins visit Yankees
May 2, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Friday:

CHILD'S PLAY

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the Blue Jays open a weekend series at Texas, where the touted rookie's Hall of Fame father was part of the 2010 Rangers team that won the AL championship and went to franchise's first World Series. During Guerrero's only season in Texas, the club's hitting coach was Clint Hurdle, now manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Hurdle, whose Pirates swept a two-game series at Texas this week, said the elder Guerrero approached him one August night that season and told the coach to meet him in the batting cage the next day.

''I'm always wondering, am I ever going to get to work with this guy? Because I hadn't,'' Hurdle said, laughing while recalling the story. ''He walks in with Junior and says, `My son, here, please work with my son.' ... And he walked out.'' Hurdle conducted about a 30-minute session with the 11-year-old Guerrero, concluding he was ''very advanced'' and hit the ball ''way too hard'' for his age.

''That was my experience working with Vlad,'' Hurdle said.

HOUSE OF HORRORS

Minnesota (19-10) takes baseball's best record into the opener of a three-game series at Yankee Stadium, where the Twins are 14-50 since 2002 - including the postseason. James Paxton (3-2, 3.38 ERA) pitches for New York against Kyle Gibson (2-0, 4.88), who is 1-5 with a 6.86 ERA in eight starts against the Yankees.

NL CENTRAL SHOWDOWN

An old rivalry is renewed when the NL-leading Cardinals (20-11) and Cubs meet for the first time this season at Wrigley Field. Jack Flaherty (3-1) gets the ball for St. Louis, which had won five straight before a rain-delayed 2-1 loss at Washington on Thursday. Flaherty has not allowed a run in 12 innings this season during day games. Kyle Hendricks (1-4) starts for the second-place Cubs, who are riding a four-game winning streak.

Friday's Diamond Notes
May 3, 2019
By Kevin Rogers

Hottest team: Twins (10-3 last 13)

Believe it or not, Minnesota owns the top record in Major League Baseball at 19-10 after capturing three of four home games from Houston. Forgiving an 11-0 defeat on Tuesday night, the Twins limited the Astros to a total of four runs in the three wins, while blowing out the defending AL West champions, 8-2 on Thursday to finish their homestand at 6-1.

The Twins travel to the Bronx tonight to face the Yankees, who return home from a 6-3 west coast road swing. Kyle Gibson looks to remain hot on the mound for Minnesota as the right-hander is coming off a pair of victories over Baltimore in which he allowed three earned runs in 13 innings of work. The Twins have won four of Gibson?s five starts this season, while giving up one earned run in 11.2 innings in two starts against New York in 2018, although Minnesota lost both games.

Coldest team: Athletics (0-6 last six)

Oakland traveled out east last weekend owning a winning record at 14-13, but back-to-back sweeps at the hands of Toronto and Boston have put the A?s under .500. The offense hasn?t done much on this trip by not scoring more than four runs in any of the six losses, while giving up at least five runs in each of the past five defeats.

The A?s remain on the road for an interleague series with the Pirates at PNC Park this weekend. Pittsburgh is riding a brief two-game winning streak following an eight-game skid after grabbing a pair of games at Texas. Brett Anderson started the season with three straight wins for Oakland, but the southpaw is winless in his past three appearances, while suffering his worst outing of the season at Toronto his last time out by getting tagged for six runs and 10 hits in 4.1 innings of work.

Hottest pitcher: Tyler Glasnow, Rays (5-0, 1.75 ERA)

The Pirates traded Glasnow last season to Tampa Bay in exchange for Chris Archer and it seemed to be deal that would favor Pittsburgh in the short term. However, the Rays are the ones in the driver?s seat of this trade as the right-hander hasn?t yielded more than two earned runs in any of his six starts, while Tampa Bay is 5-1 in his appearances. Glasnow is 3-0 away from Tropicana Field, including a victory at Fenway Park over the Red Sox his last time out. Tampa Bay travels to Baltimore to face the Orioles as Glasnow tossed seven innings in a 4-2 triumph over the O?s as a -235 favorite in mid-April.

Coldest pitcher: Chris Sale, Red Sox (0-5, 6.30 ERA)

Amazingly, Boston is winless in six starts made by Sale in 2019, including three defeats as a favorite of -200 or higher. The numbers have actually improved for the lanky left-hander as Sale has given up four earned runs and struck out 18 in his last two starts, although the Sox lost at home to the Tigers and Rays. Sale heads back to Chicago to face his former team, the White Sox trying to break through the win column. Boston lost on a walk-off homer on Thursday to drop to 3-8 in series openers, while the Red Sox haven?t been much better in Game 2?s of a series off a loss by going 2-5.

Biggest OVER run: Mariners (8-1-1 last 10)

Don?t look at the scoreboard if you?re a fan of the Mariners recently as Seattle?s pitching has allowed 46 runs in the last four games. The M?s lost all four of those home contests to the Rangers and Cubs, including three defeats by 11 runs or more. Prior to this cold spell offensively, Seattle plated 19 runs in the first two games of its series against Texas. The M?s own a 9-2-1 mark to the OVER in the last 12 games away from T-Mobile Park as Seattle heads to Cleveland for a weekend series. Southpaw Yusei Kikuchi has drilled the OVER in three straight road starts, as the Mariners scored five runs or more in those contests.

Biggest UNDER run: Reds (13-3-1 last 17)

Cincinnati is by far the top UNDER team in baseball as the Reds have cashed only seven OVERS on the season. The Reds exchanged a pair of 1-0 contests against the Mets the last two days, while scoring three runs or less in five of the past six games. Cincinnati?s offense hasn?t been great this season, but the Reds have received quality pitching since a shaky start the opening week. Sonny Gray heads to the hill for Cincinnati against San Francisco as the Reds are 5-1 to the UNDER in the right-hander?s six starts. The offense has been inconsistent when Gray takes the ball as the Reds have scored five and seven runs in two wins, but have posted two runs or less in four losses.

Matchup to watch: Dodgers vs. Padres

It?s not a surprise that Los Angeles sits atop the NL West at 20-13, but San Diego is making a threat towards the top spot in the division at 18-14. The Padres started their road swing strong with a pair of victories at Washington, but blew a 6-0 lead in the finale in an extra innings loss and went on to lose two of the first three games at Atlanta. San Diego?s bats woke up on Thursday afternoon as the Padres scored five runs each in consecutive innings of an 11-2 rout of the Braves.

The storyline heading into tonight?s contest is Manny Machado facing his former team (albeit for the second half of 2018) for the first time since signing his mega-deal with the Padres. Southpaw Eric Lauer began the season with a masterful start against the Giants by tossing six scoreless innings, but he is winless in his past three outings. Lauer was sharp in his previous start against the Dodgers last September as a +240 underdog in L.A. by posting five innings and allowing one run in a 5-3 win.

The Dodgers lost two of three to the rival Giants earlier this week, including a pair of low-scoring one-run defeats. Los Angeles turns to Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw, who is unbeaten in three starts after beating Pittsburgh his last time out, 3-1. The Dodgers have won all seven starts made by Kershaw against the Padres dating back to the start of the 2016 season, including four wins at Petco Park.

Betcha didn?t know: The Braves were embarrassed on Thursday by the Padres (you probably knew that). Atlanta heads to Miami as Kevin Gausman has dominated the Marlins in two starts since getting traded from the Orioles last season. The Braves? right-hander hasn?t given up a run in 12 innings against Miami, while the Marlins are 1-6 in their last seven games off a win after beating Cleveland on Wednesday.

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

James Paxton, New York Yankees (3-2, 3.38 ERA, $-81): After making the move to the Big Apple from Seattle, there was some uncertainty about how the lefthander would adjust to hitter-friendly Yankee Stadium, but Paxton is really starting to settle in.

Over his last three starts Paxton has been on fire, allowing just three runs while striking out 32 batters through 19.2 innings of work. A matter of fact, Paxton has actually pitched at his best at home this season, with just one run allowed through 19.2 innings. He will hope to continue his success today as the Yankees host the high-scoring Minnesota Twins.

SLUMPING

Sonny Gray, Cincinnati Reds (0-4, 3.64, $-227)
: Unlike most of the pitchers who make our slumping column, Gray has actually pitched pretty well despite his 0-4 start to the season. He has an impressive WHIP of 0.98 and opponent BA of .198 through six starts. Unfortunately the Reds haven't given him much run support; in Gray's four losses, Cincy has scored a total of four runs. Gray will go for his first win of the season tonight against the Giants who rank 29th in the majors in both runs per game with 3.16 and batting with .214.

WEATHER

Not too much to report in the area of weather for today's games, with wind possibly only playing a factor in (where else) the Windy City. There is a 10 mph wind breeze towards right field at Guaranteed Rate Field for the Sox game, while a 12 MPH wind is blowing towards home plate at Wrigley for the matchup between the Cardinals and Cubs.

3 STRIKES

ARENADO ON FIRE

Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado has been on fire lately, batting .355 with three doubles, five homers and 10 RBI over his last ten games. Today the Rockies will be facing off against the Diamondbacks and starting pitcher Robbie Ray. Arenado has batted .355 with three doubles and three homeruns in 31 at bats against Ray in his career. Arenado has -167 odds to get an RBI today and +230 odds to crank a homerun.

STARTING OFF ON THE WRONG FOOT

The Baltimore Orioles are just 10-44 in their last 54 opening games of a series. Today they begin their home series against the Tampa Bay Rays who are 8-1 in their previous nine Game 1s and have 5-0 Tyler Glasnow on the mound. The O's are understandily heavy underdogs in this one, at +203.

OVER BETTORS REJOICE

The Seattle Mariners have been the best Over bet in the majors this season going 22-9 O/U. They're also 5-0-1 to the Over in Yusei Kikuchi's last six starts. Tonight Kikuchi and the M's will face off against Shane Bieber and Cleveland. While Bieber has been a strong Under bet this season (2-4 O/U) the Over has cashed in five straight meetings between these two teams.

Hendricks needs 81 pitches for CG, Cubs beat Cards 4-0
May 3, 2019
By The Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) Kyle Hendricks needed just 81 pitches for a four-hitter, Anthony Rizzo homered for his third straight game and the Chicago Cubs beat the NL Central-leading St. Louis Cardinals 4-0 on Friday.

The second-place Cubs won their season-high fifth in a row while cutting St. Louis' lead to 1+ games. The Cardinals have back-to-back losses after five consecutive victories.

Hendricks (2-4) pitched his third career shutout and fourth complete game, his first since he shut out Miami on Aug. 1, 2016. The right-hander struck out three and did not walk a batter, after getting pounded in a loss at Arizona last week. Hendricks improved to 6-2 in 15 starts against St. Louis.

Rizzo made it 3-0 with a three-run drive against Jack Flaherty (3-2) in the third and finished with three hits. Javier Baez added an RBI single in the seventh, and the Cubs opened a 10-game homestand with a win.

Flaherty allowed three runs and four hits in 5 2/3 innings.

BRAVES 7, MARLINS 2

MIAMI (AP) - Freddie Freeman and Brian McCann each homered to help Atlanta settle its score with Miami pitcher Jose Urena.

Braves right-hander Kevin Gausman was ejected in the second inning for throwing a 97 mph fastball behind Urena (1-5), who was at the center of a melee between the teams last season. Touki Toussaint (2-0), recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett, replaced Gausman and allowed one run in four innings with six strikeouts.

Gausman's first pitch to Urena was knee-high behind the batter, and plate umpire Jeff Nelson immediately signaled the ejection.

The game was Urena's first against the Braves since he was suspended for six games for intentionally hitting Atlanta's Ronald Acuna Jr. on the arm with a pitch last August, triggering a bench-clearing confrontation.

YANKEES 6, TWINS 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Gary Sanchez homered twice and New York overcame its latest injury, beating Minnesota after starter James Paxton exited early with soreness in his left knee.

Already with 13 players on the injured list, the Yankees said Paxton will have an MRI on Saturday. The oft-injured Paxton, acquired from Seattle in an offseason trade to be a front-end starter, lasted only three innings on a nippy, 51-degree night.

Jonathan Holder (2-0) tossed two perfect innings before Adam Ottavino and Tommy Kahnle each worked a hitless inning. Aroldis Chapman got three outs for his sixth save.

Sanchez launched a 428-foot shot off Kyle Gibson (2-1) leading off the fifth and lined a laser to left field against birthday boy Mike Morin for his 10th home run in the seventh.

GIANTS 12, REDS 11, 11 INNINGS

CINCINNATI (AP) - Stephen Vogt hit a tying homer in the ninth inning, Evan Longoria connected in the 11th and San Francisco rallied from an eight-run deficit for a victory over Cincinnati.

Down 8-0 after three innings, the Giants piled up three homers off the NL's top bullpen to pull it out and ruin top prospect Nick Senzel's debut for the Reds.

The Giants were down to their final out when Vogt connected off Raisel Iglesias for his first homer, tying it 11-11. Longoria led off the 11th with a homer just inside the left field foul pole off Jared Hughes (2-1), allowing San Francisco to get the better of a matchup between the NL's two worst offenses.

Reyes Moronta (1-2) escaped a threat in the 10th. Will Smith retired the side in the 11th for his eighth save in eight chances.

PHILLIES 4, NATIONALS 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Rhys Hoskins hit a three-run homer, Jerad Eickhoff threw five crisp innings and Philadelphia beat Washington.

After Kurt Suzuki went deep off Seranthony Dominguez (3-0) to give the Nationals a 2-1 lead in the sixth, the Phillies rallied.

Jean Segura's infield single with one out chased Jeremy Hellickson. Lefty Dan Jennings (0-1) entered to face Bryce Harper, who drew a walk. Nationals manager Dave Martinez had a right-hander warming up in the bullpen but kept Jennings in to pitch to Hoskins. The cleanup hitter blasted a 1-1 pitch out to left to give Philadelphia a 4-2 lead.

RED SOX 6, WHITE SOX 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Chris Sale snapped out of his early season funk to earn his first win with an impressive performance against his former team, tossing six scoreless innings of three-hit ball in Boston's victory over Chicago.

Sale (1-5) entered with a 6.30 ERA through six starts but was dominant against Chicago in striking out a season-high 10. The left-hander retired seven of his first eight batters and didn't allow a hit until Yoan Moncada lined a sharp single with two outs in the fourth.

Rafael Devers launched a three-run homer deep to center off Reynaldo Lopez in the first inning. Michael Chavis added two-run shot to the top of the left field stands in the sixth as Boston won for the fourth time in its last five games.

Lopez (2-4) allowed six runs and eight hits through five-plus innings. In his previous start, the right-hander yielded only an unearned run and struck out a career-high 14 in six innings.

INDIANS 2, MARINERS 1

CLEVELAND (AP) - Pinch-hitter Tyler Naquin's two-out single in the ninth inning drove in the winning run and Cleveland defeated Seattle.

Naquin, batting for Jordan Luplow, grounded the first pitch from Anthony Swarzak (2-1) through the right side to score Leonys Martin from second base. Naquin was mobbed by teammates down the right field line after Cleveland's second walkoff win of the season.

The hit also provided some good news for the Indians, who placed pitcher Corey Kluber on the 10-day injured list before the game. Kluber broke his right arm after being hit by a line drive Wednesday and is out indefinitely. The Indians said Kluber does not need surgery for now and will be re-examined in three to four weeks.

Brad Hand (1-1) struck out two in the ninth to earn the win.

BREWERS 3, METS 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Ryan Braun hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the fifth inning off Steven Matz (3-2), Brandon Woodruff pitched five solid innings and Milwaukee beat New York.

Braun had three hits to lift his average to .226, including his seventh home run of the season. Milwaukee played its fifth consecutive game without NL MVP Christian Yelich, who continues to deal with low back discomfort.

Woodruff (4-1) gave up six hits and one run in five innings to beat the Mets for the second time in a week. He walked two and struck out seven.

Josh Hader got six outs for his eighth save in eight tries. Hader allowed the first two batters in the ninth to reach before striking out the next three.

ATHLETICS 14, PIRATES 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Josh Phegley drove in a career-high eight runs to set a franchise record for most RBIs in a game by a catcher and Oakland snapped a six-game losing streak.

Phegley sandwiched a run-scoring single in the third between bases-clearing doubles in the second and fourth and added a long solo homer in the ninth. He finished 4 for 5 for the A's, who jumped on Joe Musgrove (1-3) early to win for just the fifth time in 18 tries away from O.Co Coliseum.

Matt Chapman added his ninth home run for Oakland and Kendry Morales went 3 for 4 as the A's set season highs in both runs and hits (16), and nearly matched their entire 15-run output during the six-game slide that dropped them to the bottom of the American League West.

Brett Anderson (4-2) allowed one run on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts to pick up his first win since April 9. Anderson even added a pair of singles at the plate for the first multihit game of his career.

RAYS 7, ORIOLES 0

BALTIMORE (AP) - Tyler Glasnow pitched seven innings of three-hit ball to earn his major league-leading sixth win, and Tampa Bay got a slump-breaking homer from Mike Zunino in a rout of Baltimore.

Glasnow (6-0) struck out eight, walked none and lowered his AL-best ERA to 1.47. It's been an impressive turnaround for the right-hander, who entered this season with a 4-16 lifetime record.

Zunino snapped an 0-for-17 skid with a three-run homer off Dan Straily (1-2) to make it 4-0 in the fourth inning.

TIGERS 4, ROYALS 3

DETROIT (AP) - Matthew Boyd struck out nine in another solid outing, and Detroit scored three runs in the first inning.

It was the sixth straight quality start for Boyd (3-2), who allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings. He walked one. Shane Greene allowed a solo homer to Jorge Soler in the ninth, but he was able to close the game out for his American League-leading 13th save in 13 chances.

Jorge Lopez (0-3) settled down nicely after a tough first inning. He allowed four runs and five hits in seven innings.

**************************

Saturday?s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind??.

13) A 14-year old kid named Yang Kuang played in the European Tour event in China this week; he made the cut by a stroke, making a 15-foot putt on the last hole to finish the two days -1.

They show the kid get up and down from the bunker; he isn?t very big, but what a future he has, to be able to hold his own against pros when he is just starting high school.

12) So I?m having lunch at Denny?s Friday, and the couple in the next booth is having a fairly big argument; they?re newlyweds, and the Mrs is ?stressed out?, but they can?t agree on why she is stressed out, which stresses her out even further. Neither person is happy.

This goes on for a while, then they mercifully ask for the check, take their argument elsewhere. Hopefully they have a comfortable couch in their home, seeing how the Mr figured to be sleeping there Friday night. Oy.

11) The dictionary defines ?scapegoat? this way:

?a person who is blamed for the wrongdoings, mistakes, or faults of others, especially for reasons of expediency.?

Or in the case of the Washington Nationals, pitching coach Derek Lilliquist, who got told to take a hike Thursday after Washington stumbled to a 13-17 start.

Not his fault Bryce Harper signed in Philly.

10) Braves 7, Marlins 2? Last year, when Ronald Acuna was batting leadoff and hitting lot of homers, Jose Urena of Miami drilled him with the first pitch of a game and got tossed. Lot of words were exchanged since then. This game was the first time since then that Urena faced Atlanta.

Bottom of 2nd inning, Urena comes to bat and the first pitch is behind him, which wasn?t very subtle- Urena actually did a good job to avoid the pitch. Home plate ump immediately tosses Braves? P Kevin Gausman out of the game, which didn?t go over well with the Atlanta dugout.

9) You know the home team is pretty sad when their TV people send the roving reporter out to promote the stadium?s concession stands in the 2nd inning, and during her report, there is no one else in the shot. No one. Zero. Bupkis.

Marlins? home games are like the old joke, that if you?re an escaped convict, that would be a good place to hide out, since no one would think to look for anyone there.

8) With more strikeouts/home runs in baseball, that means fewer balls in play; does that lead to teams play worse fielders, since they?re going to get less action?

Milwaukee is playing Mike Moustakas at 2B, Travis Shaw at 3B; I?m guessing they have to have a 2B with better range than Moustakas somewhere in their system.

7) NFL and FOX agreed to fewer, but longer commercial breaks during next year?s Super Bowl. Four commercial breaks per quarter instead of five, with each running for 2.5 minutes instead of two minutes. Overall, same amount of commercials will be shown.

6) Detroit Lions? trainer quit this week, to pursue ?other opportunities?; the guy had spent 25 years in the NFL, the last five in Detroit. He was replaced by somebody from U of Michigan, who had previously spent time with the Patriots, Giants. Go figure. Matt Patricia spent a long time with the Patriots.

I may be a conspiracy theorist here, but guys don?t quit jobs like that, not when they?ve spent 25 years in the league. New head coach comes in, and after one season the trainer ?quits?. It will read that he jumped ship, but the suspicion here is that he got pushed.

5) Hope for New Jersey Jets? fans this season:

Since 2000, Jets head coaches, 1st year and then after??

2000 Al Groh First year: 9-7 Only lasted one year
2001 Herm Edwards: First year: 10-6 Rest of time: 29-35
2006: Eric Mangini: First year: 10-6 Rest of time: 13-19
2008: Rex Ryan: First year: 9-7 Rest of time: 37-43
2015: Todd Bowles: First year: 10-6 Rest of time: 14-33
2019 will be Adam Gase?s first year as Jets? coach.

4) Cincinnati Reds scored total of nine runs in Tyler Mahle?s first six starts, which explains why they lost five of those games. Mahle is 0-4, 4.09 with a 1.30 WHIP; he hasn?t been terrible, just hasn?t gotten any support whatsoever.

3) Cubs 4, Cardinals 0? Kyle Hendricks threw an 81-pitch complete game, the fewest pitches in a complete game since Aaron Cook in 2012.

2) Giants 12, Reds 11 (11)? Cincinnati led 8-0 in 3rd inning, 11-7 in 8th inning but lost, day after splitting pair of 1-0 games in New York. Stephen Vogt went 3-3 with three runs scored for SF, in a game he didn?t enter until the fifth inning.

1) The governor of Montana signed a sports betting bill this week, the first state this year to pass a sports betting bill. Tennessee will also have sports betting soon; governors in Iowa, Indiana have similar bills on their desks.

Montana expects to have their system up for the NFL season.

The Cardinals and Cubs square off at Wrigley Field on Saturday afternoon at 4:05 p.m. ET on national television. For the Cubs, they have picked up five consecutive victories, while going 4-0 in their past four vs. RHP. They're also 4-1 in the past five at home. However, the Cubbies have managed just one win over the past five starts by RHP Yu Darvish. In this series, the Cards have won just five times in the past 21 trips to Wrigley Field, while going 1-5 in the past five road outings by Wacha in Chicago. The 'over' is 8-2-1 in the past 11 meetings in Wrigley, and 5-1-1 in Wacha's past seven starts on the north side.

The Nationals and Phillies face each other on Friday night, as LHP Patrick Corbin and RHP Jake Arrieta do battle at 'The Vault'. Currently OF Bryce Harper's new team is five games above his old team in the NL East standings. Washington has won just twice in the past seven on the road, while going 1-4 in the past five overall. They're also 1-5 in the past six vs. RHP. For the Phillies, they're 5-1 in the past six starts, and 4-0 in the past four against NL East opponents. Philly has also won five of the past six at home, and they're 26-9 in the past 35 at home vs. LHP. In addition, they're 4-1 in Arrieta's past five starts against divisional foes.

On the south side, it's a battle of Sox, and a battle of southpaws, too, as LHP Eduardo Rodriguez of the Red Sox battles LHP Manny Banuelos. Boston is starting to piece things together after a slow start, going 4-1 in the past five on the road, while going 4-1 in the past five overall, too. However, they're still just 1-5 in their past six tries vs. LHP, and 0-4 in the past four on the road against southpaws. E-Rod has been hot, and the BoSox are 4-0 in his past four against AL Central teams, 12-3 in his past 15 on the road and 22-5 in his past 27 against teams with an overall losing record. The White Sox are 4-1 in their past five vs. LHP, and 5-2 in the past seven overall, too. They're also 5-2 in the past seven on the south side. In this series the under is an impressive 10-2 in the past 12 meetings, while going 4-1 in the past five battles at Guaranteed Rate Field.

It's more lefty-on-lefty crime when the Dodgers battle the Padres at Petco as LHP Rich Hill and LHP Joey Lucchesi battle. The Dodgers have won six of their past eight overall, and they're 5-2 in the past seven road outings against a team with a winning record. They're also 8-1 in Hill's past nine starts, and 4-0 in his past four road outings. For the Padres, they're 7-3 in the past 10 vs. LHP, while going 5-1 in the past six at home against lefties. The Padres have dropped each of their past four against divisional foes. They're 4-1 in Lucchesi's past five home outings, but 3-13 in the past 16 against NL West foes. L.A. has won four of their past five trips to San Diego, and they're 6-2 in Hill's past eight starts against the Padres.

Weather Report

The weather report looks great all across the MLB venues on Saturday, with precipitation chances under 20 percent and wind under 10 mph. Weather won't play a factor.

Sunday, May 5

The Braves and Marlins will square off in South Florida. RHP Julio Teheran is on the bump, and the Braves are just 1-4 over his past five road outings, although they're 6-2 in his past eight outings against teams with a losing overall record. The Marlins are just 2-10 in RHP Pablo Lopez's past 12 starts, and they 0-7 in his past seven outings against divisional foes. The over is 5-2 in Teheran's past seven outings overall, while the under is 5-0 in Lopez's past five outings. The over is also 8-3 in the past 11 starts against the Marlins by Teheran.

RHP Zack Greinke and RHP German Marquez will do battle in the Mile High City, as the Diamondbacks and Rockies square off. Arizona has won six straight starts by Grinke, and they're 11-4 across his past 15 road outings. They're also 11-5 in the past 16 starts by Greinke against divisional opponents. The Rockies have won six of Marquez's past eight home outings, and they're 5-2 in the past seven starts overall by the righty. They're also 7-3 in the past 10 starts against NL West opponents by Marquez. The Rockies are 4-0 in Marquez's past four vs. the Diamondbacks, and the over is 5-0 across the past five starts by Marquez against Arizona.

The Cardinals and Cubs are the nationally televised game on Sunday night, with RHP Adam Wainwright and LHP Jose Quintana doing battle. St. Louis has won seven of the past 10 starts by Waino, and they're 38-17 in his past 55 inside the divisiion. The Cubbies have won each of Quintana's past four starts, and they're 4-1 in his past five at home against winning teams, 6-2 in his past eight overall against winning club and an impressive 20-7 in the past 27 starts by Q at home. The under is 4-1-1 in Quintanan's past six while working on six days of rest, and, for what it's worth, the under is 8-3-1 in his past 12 showings on a Sunday. The under is also 4-1-1 in his past six against the Cards. For St. Louis, the under is 4-0-1 in Waino's past five starts, 8-1-1 in his past 10 overall against teams with a winning overall record and 6-2-1 in Wainwright's past nine against the Cubs.

Weather Report

The Rays and O's will face a 50 percent chance of rain for the start of their 1:05 p.m. ET game on Sunday. However, the rain will taper off considerably and they'll get it underway, perhaps after a slight delay. The same holds true for the Nationals-Phillies battle, as their is a 35 percent chance of rain for the first hour of Sunday's game, but less than 20 percent after.

In the Bronx the rains will also be falling, potentially pushing back the Twins-Yankees battle by a few hours. However, they'll likely be able to get it in, as rain chances diminish to 25 percent by 4:00 p.m.

For the Blue Jays-Rangers battle in Arlington it will be the winds which affect the game. There will be a 9-12 mph wind blowing in from right field to home plate, knocking the ball down for left-handed hitters in particular. For Dodgers-Padres in San Diego, the winds will be blowing in from 9-12 mph from left field to home plate. Lastly, the Astros and Angels will face 10-13 mph winds blowing in from the left-center field power alley to home plate at Monterrey Baseball Stadium.
