Gonzalez, Buxton hit homers, Twins beat Rays 6-2
June 1, 2019
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Gary Sanchez hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the fifth inning, Aroldis Chapman escaped trouble in the ninth and the New York Yankees bullpen held tight again to beat the Boston Red Sox 5-3 Saturday night.

After starter Domingo German was chased early, six Yankee relievers combined for 5 1/3 scoreless innings to lock down another victory over the rival Red Sox - New York is 4-0 to start the season series, a first since 2012.

Chapman walked Mookie Betts and allowed a single to Andrew Benintendi leading off the ninth, but J.D. Martinez hit a double-play grounder and Rafael Devers rolled the last out to first.

Chapman got his 17th save in 18 tries, closing out a game where Chad Green (1-2) and Adam Ottavino stranded runners with timely strikeouts.

Boston went 2 for 14 with runners in scoring position, including seven strikeouts. The Red Sox tied a season high with 14 strikeouts and matched a season most with their fourth straight loss.

The Yankees have won 15 of 18 and clinched their ninth straight series victory, a first for the franchise since 1998.

Xander Bogaerts homered and had three hits for the Red Sox, who have lost 6 of 8 and fell 9 1/2 games behind New York for the AL East lead. That is Boston's biggest deficit in the division since finishing 15 games out in 2015.

Rick Porcello (4-5) allowed five runs in 4 2/3 innings.

TWINS 6, RAYS 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Marwin Gonzalez and Byron Buxton homered and drove in two runs each as Minnesota beat Tampa Bay.

The Twins, who lead the majors with 108 homers, failed to go deep while splitting the first two games of the series at Tropicana Field.

Kyle Gibson (6-2) allowed one unearned run and six hits over five innings for Minnesota.

Minnesota went up 2-1 on consecutive RBI doubles by Jorge Polanco and Gonzalez in the third off Yonny Chirinos (6-2).

After Buxton had an RBI single during the fourth, Gonzalez made it 4-1 on a fifth-inning solo shot.

The Twins took a 5-1 lead on Buxton's homer in the sixth off Hunter Wood.

Miguel Sano had an RBI double during the seventh to complete a stretch where Minnesota scored in five consecutive innings.

Travis d'Arnaud had a run-scoring single in the second for the Rays.

BREWERS 12, PIRATES 10, 13 INNINGS

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Orlando Arcia hit his second homer of the game, a two-run drive in the 13th inning that sent Milwaukee over Pittsburgh.

Both teams blew late leads before Arcia connected with two outs off Alex McRae (0-1) for his first multi-homer game in the majors. Earlier, Arcia hit a two-run homer in the second.

Starling Marte had four hits for Pittsburgh, including a three-run homer in the eighth for a 10-8 lead.

Keston Hiura hit a tying, two-run homer with one out in the Milwaukee ninth. Christian Yelich hit his major league-leading 22nd homer, tripled and drove in four runs for Milwaukee.

Mike Moustakas hit his third home run in as many games for the Brewers before leaving in the ninth after suffering a right hand bruise from being hit by a pitch.

Pinch-hitter Jose Osuna homered for the Pirates while Elias Diaz got three hits and drove in four runs.

Milwaukee starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff was charged with six runs over four innings, allowing a season-high 10 hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

INDIANS 5, WHITE SOX 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Carlos Santana and Leonys Martin homered and Cleveland took advantage of a blunder on the bases to end Chicago's five-game streak.

The Indians climbed back to .500 and prevented the White Sox from reaching the break-even mark for the first time since April 5.

Chicago loaded the bases with no outs in the third on a single by Tim Anderson and walks to Yolmer Sanchez and Charlie Tilson. Leury Garcia hit a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead, but pitcher Jefry Rodriguez escaped further damage when he caught Sanchez off second on pickoff attempt.

Sanchez got caught in a rundown and was tagged out by third baseman Jose Ramirez, who then threw over to first base to get Tilson retreating to the bag to end the inning.

Indians reliever Oliver Perez (1-0) went 1 2/3 innings for the win. Brad Hand pitched a perfect ninth for his 16th save in 16 chances.

Ivan Nova (3-5) allowed six hits and three earned runs in seven innings, striking out 3.

RANGERS 6, ROYALS 2

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Joey Gallo hit a tie-breaking home run for the second straight game before leaving in the fifth inning due to injury as Texas beat Kansas City.

Gallo was removed because of tightness in his left oblique while batting. He initially felt the injury while in the outfield and then again on a check swing during a plate appearance. He had an MRI and passed some strength tests after the game.

Lance Lynn (7-4) allowed both runs. He yielded six hits and a hit batter, striking out seven for his fifth straight quality start.

The Rangers have won four of five, improved to 19-9 at home and moved two games over .500 at 29-27.

Homer Bailey (4-6) gave up four runs on six hits and two walks in 3 2/3 innings for his fourth straight start without a victory.

The Royals have lost five of their last six games and have the worst road record in the majors at 8-22. Kansas City left seven runners on base and was 2 for 11 with runners in scoring position.

GIANTS 8, ORIOLES 2

BALTIMORE (AP) - Brandon Belt drove in four runs, Buster Posey homered and San Francisco used a rare offensive outburst to breeze past Baltimore.

San Francisco built a 7-1 lead in the fifth inning and cruised to only its second win in 10 games.

Mike Yastrzemski scored twice and had an RBI for the Giants, who made it easy for rookie right-hander Shaun Anderson to earn his first major league victory.

Anderson (1-1) allowed two runs and five hits over seven innings in his fourth big league start. Anderson ended a run of 40 consecutive starts of fewer than seven innings by Giants pitchers - the team's longest such streak in the last 100 years.

San Francisco scored all its runs off David Hess (1-7). Since April 1, Hess has gone 0-7 over 10 starts.

Renato Nunez hit his 15th home run for Baltimore, the eighth in 12 games.

NATIONALS 5, REDS 2

CINCINNATI (AP) - Gerardo Parra hit a three-run homer that ended Tanner Roark's streak of keeping the ball in the park and Matt Adams added a solo shot, leading Washington over Cincinnati.

Washington has won nine of its last 10 at Great American Ball Park. Overall, the Nationals are 17-5 against the Reds since 2016.

The Nationals faced Roark (4-4) for the first time since trading him to the Reds in the offseason. Parra's homer in the second inning ended Roark's string of 36 2/3 innings without allowing a homer, the second longest of his career.

Tanner Rainey (1-1) entered in the fifth inning and fanned three of the five batters he faced for his first major league win. Sean Doolittle picked up his 11th save in 13 chances.

Washington's Juan Soto went 0 for 4, ending his career-best hitting streak at 14 games.

BRAVES 10, TIGERS 5

ATLANTA (AP) - Mike Soroka won his sixth straight decision, Freddie Freeman and Austin Riley each hit a two-run homer, and Atlanta beat Detroit to snap a three-game skid.

Soroka (6-1) scuffled a bit, allowing season highs of three runs and seven hits and striking out five in 6 2/3 innings.

Braves closer Luke Jackson earned a five-out save, his eighth overall this season in 12 chances.

Daniel Norris (2-4) allowed six hits, one walk and six runs - five earned - and struck out four.

ANGELS 6, MARINERS 3

SEATTLE (AP) - Kole Calhoun and Mike Trout homered late, Andrew Heaney struck out 10 and Los Angeles overcame two home runs by Edwin Encarnacion and beat Seattle.

Calhoun's second home run of the series broke a 3-3 tie and helped overcome Encarnacion's 34th multi-home run game. The Mariners' designated hitter tied the game in the sixth inning with a two-run shot, his second of the game and 15th this season.

Cesar Puello beat out a slow roller to third in the eighth inning that chased reliever Brandon Brennan (2-3). Two outs later, Calhoun homered on a 3-2 pitch to give the Angels a 5-3 lead.

Trout added an insurance run in the ninth with his 14th home run of the season.

Cam Bedrosian (2-3) earned the win in relief and Hansel Robles earned his seventh save. Bedrosian, Ty Buttrey and Robles each pitched one inning of relief with one strikeout.

ROCKIES 4, BLUE JAYS 2

DENVER (AP) - Jon Gray struck out seven in a solid seven-inning outing, Nolan Arenado singled to extend his hitting streak to 12 games and Daniel Murphy drove in two runs as Colorado beat Toronto.

David Dahl had three hits as the Rockies won their seventh straight and improve to 8-1 on their homestand. Scott Oberg got the final out for his second save.

Gray (5-4) allowed two hits in 6 2/3 innings and didn't allow a run for the second time this season.

Gray's scoreless outing overshadowed a strong start by Toronto's Marcus Stroman (3-7). The right-hander settled down after a rough first, giving up four runs, three earned, in seven innings.

Raimel Tapia extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a double in the fifth inning.

DODGERS 4, PHILLIES 3

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Will Smith hit a towering, tiebreaking home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving Los Angeles a comeback victory over Philadelphia in a matchup of division leaders and the two best teams in the National League.

With one out, Smith smashed his first career homer into the left field pavilion off Hector Neris (1-2).

Julio Urias (3-2) got the victory with two innings of relief. He gave up a two-run homer to Bryce Harper in the eighth that tied it at 3-all.

Clayton Kershaw allowed one run and six hits, struck out six and walked none.

ASTROS 5, ATHLETICS 1

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Justin Verlander struck out eight over eight innings and moved into a share of the major league lead with his ninth win, pitching Houston past Oakland.

Verlander (9-2) allowed one run on four hits and walked two, allowing only Stephen Piscotty's second-inning homer. He also passed Cy Young (2,806) for 22nd place in major league history for strikeouts and now has 2,809.

Josh Reddick hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the fourth for Houston. Reddick also had a two-run drive against his old Oakland team in a 9-1 Astros win here April 16.

Robinson Chirinos added a two-run drive in the ninth for the Astros.

Oakland starter Brett Anderson (6-4) exited in the sixth, allowing three runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings.

A's slugger Khris Davis returned from a stint on the injured list with a bruised left hip and went 0 for 4.

MARLINS 9, PADRES 3

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Harold Ramirez's two-run double highlighted Miami's five-run fourth inning, Bryan Holaday hit a two-run homer and Jose Urena won his third straight start in beating San Diego.

The Marlins sent 11 batters to the plate in the fourth, with Garrett Cooper hitting two singles, driving in one run and scoring one run. The first six Marlins batters reached to knock out rookie lefty Nick Margevicius and give the Marlins a 4-2 lead. Ramirez's two-run double was followed by RBI singles by Martin Prado and Miguel Rojas. Luis Perdomo came on and got two outs before first baseman Eric Hosmer's error loaded the bases. Cooper followed with an RBI single.

Holaday hit a line-shot homer off Adam Warren in the sixth for his first of the season. Ramirez added an RBI grounder in the ninth.

Urena (4-6) held San Diego to three runs and three hits in six innings, struck out six and walked three.

He allowed rookie Josh Naylor's first career homer and Hosmer's RBI single in the sixth.

Margevicius (2-6) allowed five runs - four earned - and six hits in three-plus innings, struck out one and walked one.

Friday?s quiz

Sunday?s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday??

13) New sports book opened in Las Vegas Saturday, at the Golden Gate Casino downtown. Circa Sports is running this book; there will be a new Circa hotel/casino being built downtown soon, which looks like it will be really nice.

12) Friday, someone bid more than $4.5M in a charity auction for the opportunity to have dinner with famed investor Warren Buffett. Wonder what was on the menu?

11) Alex, I?d like Bad Baseball for $500:

Bottom of 3rd inning in Chicago, White Sox have runners on 1st and 2nd, one out, with Yoan Moncada up, the #2 hitter in order. TV analyst Steve Stone predicts a pickoff attempt at 2B, because the shortstop took his glove off. Sure enough, they pick the guy off second, but not only that, they throw to first and pick that genius off, too.

Pitcher is dying on the mound and he gets a double play without throwing a pitch.

Stone is one of the best TV analysts; very smart.

10) Jacob deGrom?s last three starts were against Scherzer, Kershaw, Greinke. Lot of high profile pitching matchups.

9) Baseball stuff:
? Milwaukee put P Gio Gonzalez (arm) on IL.
? Red Sox put 1B Steve Pearce (back) on IL.
? Texas OF Joey Gallo (oblique) left Saturday?s game early

8) Twins 6, Rays 2? Minnesota is now 39-18; last year, they got their 39th win on July 8.

7) College basketball transfer portal:
? Texas A&M?Corpus Christi G Kareem South bolted to California.
? American F Sam Iorio bolts to South Alabama.
? Tennessee Tech grad transfer G Chris McNeal is poached by Cincinnati.

6) Toronto Raptors? big man Pascal Siakam didn?t start playing basketball until he was 17; imagine that?

5) In Game 1 of the NBA Finals, Golden State was +2 in the 14:52 when Steph Curry was on the floor and Fred VanVleet wasn?t; they were -11 in the 25:24 with Curry/VanVleet both on floor. VanVleet has done a better job of defending Curry than anyone else in the NBA.

4) Murray State G Ja Morant, who is expected to be the #2 pick in the NBA Draft, is having minor surgery on his right knee, which should sideline him 3-4 weeks and likely means he won?t play in the Las Vegas Summer League in July.

3) Kid on Baylor hit three homers, knocked in 11 runs in a 24-6 rout of Omaha Saturday in the NCAA baseball tournament. 11 RBI in one game doesn?t happen much, at any level.

2) Brewers 12, Pirates 10 (13)? Both closers blew their first save of the year in this 5-hour game; Arcia homered in the 13th for the game-winning runs.

1) There were 1,135 home runs hit in May, breaking the all-time record for a month by 16.

LEADING OFF: Betts back in leadoff spot, Giolito streaking
June 1, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Sunday:

BACK ON TOP

The World Series champion Red Sox haven't looked quite the same this season - not even on the lineup card. Manager Alex Cora is changing that, restoring 2018 AL MVP Mookie Betts to the leadoff spot.

Cora informed Betts before Saturday night's 5-3 loss to the AL East-leading Yankees that he would be batting first the rest of the season - just like he did last year. Cora opened the year experimenting with Andrew Benintendi atop the lineup, with Betts at No. 2.

The Red Sox play at Yankee Stadium in this week's Sunday night game.

GEE, GIOLITO!

White Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito (7-1, 2.85 ERA) has excelled in his last eight starts, going 6-0 with a 2.20 ERA. The streak includes his first big league shutout, a four-hitter against Houston.

The 24-year-old Giolito will start in Cleveland vs. rookie righty Zach Plesac. The 24-year-old Plesac, nephew of longtime reliever Dan Plesac, made his major league debut on Tuesday and held Boston to one run and four hits in 5 1/3 innings at Fenway Park.

GALLO GROUNDED

The Texas Rangers will see how slugger Joey Gallo is doing, a day after he exited early with tightness in his left oblique.

Gallo hit a grand slam Friday night against Kansas City and connected Saturday for his 17th home run.

Gallo was pulled while batting in the fifth inning. Manager Chris Woodward said the outfielder told him he felt the pain earlier in the game when throwing. Gallo had an MRI and passed some strength tests after the 6-2 win over the Royals.

SHIFTS FOR JAVY

Cubs shortstop Javier Baez has been dealing with a bruised right heel for almost two weeks, and was scratched for the lineup in Chicago's most recent game at St. Louis.

Baez is hitting .303 with 13 home runs and 34 RBIs. Manager Joe Maddon said Baez could move to third base when he returns, which would cut down his lateral movement and the amount of times he has to hit the base. Baez has played 50 games at shortstop this season and one at third base.

MIGGY HOBBLING

Tigers star Miguel Cabrera is dealing with soreness in his right knee, a problem that has persisted since spring training. He's had an MRI and manager Ron Gardenhire says the team will seek a second opinion on the images before deciding what's next for the two-time AL MVP and 11-time All-Star.

The 36-year-old Cabrera is batting .284 with two home runs and 22 RBIs in 194 at-bats this season. He underwent season-ending left biceps surgery in June 2018.

STREAKING/SLUMPING PITCHERS

STREAKING

Jake Odorizzi, Minnesota Twins (7-2, 2.16 ERA, $640):
The Twins right-hander is a big reason that Minnesota has the best run difference in the majors at plus-107. He has been absolutely on fire this season with a 0.99 WHIP and batting average allowed of .184, and those numbers include his first two starts of the year when he got roughed up for seven runs over 5 1-3 innings.

In his last eight starts Odorizzi is 7-0 with a 1.15 ERA and 57 strikouts over 47 innings. In five of his last six starts he hasn't given up a single run.

Today Odorizzi and the Twins will have their terrific road record tested against the Tampa Bay Rays. The Twins are the tiniest of road underdogs at +102 with the O/U set at 8.

SLUMPING

Marco Gonzales, Seattle Mariners (5-5, 3.96 ERA, $-64):
Much like the rest of his team, Gonzales has struggled after a great start to the year. At the end of April, Gonzales was 5-0 with a 2.80 ERA but the M's are 0-6 in his last six starts and he's taken the L in five of those. In his last start he got dinged for six runs in four innings against Texas and two weeks ago allowed five runs in five innings versus the Twins.

Oddly enough, Gonzales has been even worse at pitcher-friendly T-Mobile Park, with a 4.91 ERA and .298 BAA. Today, Gonzales and Seattle host the Los Angeles Angles who will be giving top pitching prospect Jose Suarez his major league debut.

3 STRIKES

BAD BEAT

The Nationals bullpen is historically bad and oddsmakers are well aware. Washington relievers have an ERA of 6.85 and BAA of .284, both easily the worst marks in the majors which is a big reason that they are just -114 favorites with ace Max Scherzer on the mound against the Cinncinnati Reds today. The Nats have blown plenty of leads this season, which has got to be frustrating for their starting pitchers and Washington bettors alike. Taking Scherzer and the Nats on the first five innings moneyline pays out at just -166 at FanDuel.

BUYER BEWARE

White Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito has been dynamite this year, going 7-1 with a 2.85 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and BAA of .186. Today the White Sox are -130 favorites at home against the weak-hitting Cleveland Indians but there are a few betting traps to watch out for: Giolito has a 4.32 ERA in five starts at home, Cleveland is 28-13 in the last 41 games between these two AL Central rivals and the Tribe will be starting promising rookie Zach Plesac who impressed in his major league debut, giving up just one run in 5 1-3 innings against the Red Sox.

GET THE BROOM OUT

The Astros continue to cruise right along and are hoping to complete the sweep of the A's in their three-game series in Oakland. The 'Stros will have Gerrit Cole on the mound. Cole is 5-5 with a 4.02 ERA this season, but has been far more effective than those numbers suggest. He has a WHIP of 1.05, BAA of .212 and has struck out a major league-leading 112 batters in 71 2-3 innings. Houston is 5-1 in Cole's last six starts.

Oakland starter Chris Bassit has also pitched well, going 3-1 in seven starts with a 3.27 ERA and .200 BAA, but the A's are reeling with four straight losses. Houston is 20-7 in their last 27 games in Oakland. The A's are 0-7 in their previous 7 games after losing the first two games of a series.

Bruce Bochy needs one win to join John McGraw as the only managers in Giants history with 1,000.

Jeff Samardzija (3-4) allowed three hits and struck out six over six innings.

Gabriel Ynoa (0-2) gave up four runs - two earned - and five hits in five innings for the Orioles, a big league-worst 18-41.

ATLANTA (AP) - Dansby Swanson homered, drove in three runs and scored the tiebreaker on Freddie Freeman's double off Joe Jimenez (2-3) in the eighth.

Touki Toussaint (3-0) got one out in the eighth.

Atlanta took two of three from the Tigers for its first home interleague series win since also winning two of three against Detroit in 2016. Atlanta was 0-5-3 in its last eight home series against American League teams.

BREWERS 4, PIRATES 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Zach Davies (6-0) allowed eight hits over eight-plus innings, struck out three and walked one.

Corbin Burnes inherited a two-on, one-out jam in the ninth but wiggled free for his first save this season and second of his big career.

Eric Thames hit a two-run homer and an RBI double for Milwaukee.

Jordan Lyles (5-3) gave up four runs and eight hits in six innings.

DODGERS 8, PHILLIES 0

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Rich Hill (2-1) struck out nine and scattered three hits over seven innings, and West-leading Los Angeles completed a three-game sweep of East-leading Philadelphia.

Eduardo Escobar also hit a two-run shot in the first.

ROCKIES 5, BLUE JAYS 1

DENVER (AP) - Antonio Senzatela (4-4) allowed one run and four hits in six innings, Chris Iannetta homered and Colorado won its eighth straight game. The Rockies swept their weekend set against the struggling Blue Jays to close out a 9-1 homestand.

Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Some college football spreads for this fall:

Sept 21? Notre Dame @ Georgia (-9.5)

Sept 28? USC @ Washington (-9.5)

Oct 5? Michigan State @ Ohio State (-15.5)

Oct 12? Texas vs Oklahoma (-6.5)

Oct 19? Michigan (-4.5) @ Penn State

Nov 9? LSU @ Alabama (-16)

**********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend??

13) Warriors 109, Raptors 104? Golden State opened second half on an 18-0 run; they even series 1-1, with Game 3 in Oakland Wednesday. Klay Thompson tweaked a hamstring in the 4th quarter and is questionable for Game 3.

12) Chicago Bears? coach Matt Nagy gave the commencement address at his alma mater, the U of Delaware this weekend; they showed a 2:30 clip on Twitter and it was sound advice for all of us. Basically, the theme of the talk was:

?Be You = Believing in yourself more than anyone else.?

11) Dwyane Wade was a surprise speaker at Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS?s graduation ceremonies Sunday in Parkland, FL; that is the school where a mass shooting took place last year. The now-retired Wade has been a regular supporter of the school ever since the shooting.

We hear a lot about famous people doing cruddy things; Wade does a lot of good things.

10) Hasheem Thabeet was the No. 2 overall draft pick in the 2009 NBA Draft; he scored only 2.2 ppg in his five-year NBA career- he last played for the Thunder in 2014. Thabeet has played overseas since then.

He is 32 now, and is trying to make a comeback in the NBA. Am guessing someone gives him a shot in the Las Vegas Summer League. He is 7-foot-3, after all.

9) Had lot of thunderstorms in the Albany area Sunday, and thunderstorms knock out my satellite signal, so I can?t watch baseball. I don?t like thunderstorms.

8) Some SEC football teams are upgrading their non-conference schedules; Florida didn?t sell out recent home games with Charleston Southern, Colorado State and Idaho, plus they got hurt by strength of schedule, when you think about the college football playoff selection process, so they?ve added home/home series with Colorado/Texas.

7) Baseball stuff:
? Milwaukee put P Jhoulys Chacin (back) on the IL.
? Seattle traded Jay Bruce to the Phillies, for a minor league 3B.
? Rangers put OF Joey Gallo (oblique) on the IL.

6) Despite Bruce getting traded from Seattle to Philly, the Mets remain responsible for a $1.5M installment of his signing bonus, a payment due Jan. 31, 2020.

5) Stan Wawrinka beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in five sets at the French Open tennis tournament; match took five hours, nine minutes. Next round will be a tough one for him.

4) College basketball transfer portal:
? Former Valparaiso C Jaume Sorolla bolted to Cincinnati.

NL: New York-Twins-Astros. Wild Card: Rays-Rangers

1) Baseball draft starts at 6pm Monday; the weirdest of the drafts, since kids get picked and then disappear into the minor leagues for a few years. Hopefully this year, the A?s won?t pick any football players.

Because of the draft, it is a very slow day for games; only four games scheduled, one a makeup; the three regularly-scheduled games are all on the west coast.

Dodgers (-140, 8 ?) at Diamondbacks ? 9:40 PM EST

Through 60 games, the team with the best record in baseball is the same one that represented the National League in the World Series the last two seasons. The Dodgers (41-19) finished off a 6-1 homestand against NL East foes, capped off by a three-game sweep of the Phillies to improve to 25-7 at Chavez Ravine.

Los Angeles allowed three runs in each of the first two wins against Philadelphia before blanking the Phillies on Sunday, 8-0 as hefty -180 favorites. The game was actually closer than the final score indicated as the first run didn?t come across until the seventh inning. The Dodgers busted things open in the eighth inning for seven runs to give a nice assist to run-line backers, highlighted by Joc Pederson?s 18th home runs of the season.

The Diamondbacks (30-30) started the weekend in poor form after getting swept at Colorado in a four-game series, capped off by three losses by one-run apiece. The woes continued in Friday?s 5-4 defeat to the Mets after allowing two late runs to extend the cold streak to five. It looked the losing skid would reach six games on Saturday in a battle of aces between Zack Greinke and Jacob deGrom as the Mets jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the eighth inning. However, the D-backs rallied for four in the bottom of the eighth before walking off in the 11th for a 6-5 triumph.

Arizona carried that momentum in Sunday?s matchup with New York as the D-backs hit a pair of first inning home runs to cruise past the Mets, 7-1. Right-hander Merrill Kelly bounced back from consecutive poor outings to put together his best start of the season by striking out 10 in 7.2 innings of work. Arizona picked up only its fourth home series victory in nine tries this season, but the D-backs enter Monday?s matchup with a 7-2 record in series openers at Chase Field.

Dodgers? right-hander Walker Buehler was bailed out in a walk-off win over the Mets last Wednesday as he allowed five earned runs in five innings of work. Los Angeles dug out of an 8-3 hole to stun New York, 9-8 thanks to four runs in the ninth inning as the Dodgers have scored 19 runs in Buehler?s last two starts. The Dodgers have split Buehler?s six road starts this season, while giving up five runs in only three innings against Arizona on March 31 in an 8-7 victory.

Robbie Ray went through a four-start stretch in May in which he yielded a total of six runs as Arizona went 3-1. However, the D-backs? southpaw was tagged for five runs in less than five innings of work in a 5-4 defeat at Colorado last Wednesday to suffer his first loss since April 3 at San Diego. The D-backs have split four home starts made by Ray this season, while Arizona beat Los Angeles, 5-4 in 13 innings the last time the left-hander faced the Dodgers on March 29.

Phillies (-125, 7 ?) at Padres ? 10:10 PM EST

In spite of suffering their first sweep this season, the Phillies (33-26) still sit atop the NL East. Philadelphia traveled to Los Angeles following back-to-back series wins over St. Louis and Milwaukee, but the Phillies limped out of Chavez Ravine with three consecutive losses. The offense mustered fewer than three runs for the fourth straight game, as Philadelphia slipped to 1-18 the last 19 contests when posting three runs or less.

Philadelphia is in the midst of its longest losing skid of the season following Sunday?s 8-0 shutout by Los Angeles. The Phillies did their best to hold the Dodgers off the scoreboard as the game was scoreless through six innings, but L.A. attacked Philadelphia?s bullpen for eight runs, wasting a solid start by Nick Pivetta, who struck out nine batters in six scoreless innings. Philadelphia entered the series on a five-game winning streak in Game 1?s prior to the 6-3 setback on Friday night.

The Padres (30-29) cruised past the Marlins on Friday night in a 5-2 victory at Petco Park, but Miami captured the final two meetings for the series win. Since San Diego posted a five-game winning streak capped off by a 19-4 destruction of Toronto May 25, the Padres have slipped to 2-5 the last seven contests, while scoring nine runs in the five losses.

Aaron Nola has been one of the hottest pitchers in baseball since allowing 17 runs in his first four starts. The Phillies? right-hander has yielded 14 earned runs in his past eight starts combined, while Philadelphia has won each of Nola?s last six outings. The latest victory came against the Cardinals last Wednesday in an 11-4 rout as a -175 home favorite as Nola allowed one run in seven innings, marking his sixth start giving up one run or less.

Eric Lauer counters for the Padres, as the southpaw has been sharp since getting tagged for eight runs in three innings of a 12-2 setback at Colorado on May 10. In the past three starts, Lauer has given up four runs (three earned) as the Padres are 3-0 in this stretch. The more recent win for Lauer occurred last Wednesday at Yankee Stadium in a 5-4 triumph as a +170 underdog, while San Diego has won each of his past two starts at Petco Park against Pittsburgh and Arizona.

The Padres and Phillies are meeting for the first time this season as the two squads split six meetings last season. San Diego took two of three matchups at Petco Park, but Nola beat the Padres as a -185 road favorite, 5-1 for the lone Phillies? win in that series last August.
