STREAKING/SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Aaron Nola, Philadelphia Phillies (6-0, 4.18, $225):
If Nola had a theme song it would probably be "All I Do Is Win." His ERA, 1.48 WHIP and .272 BAA are all subpar but he's still unbeaten with a 6-0 record in 12 starts. Overr his last six starts the Phillies are 6-0.

Today, Nola and Philadelphia are visiting San Diego as -147 favorites. In his career, Nola has pitched just one game at PETCO Park, a victory in 2018 where he went six scoreless innings. San Diego is batting just .231 this season, and that number is even worse at home at .220.

SLUMPING

Wade LeBlanc, Seattle Mariners (2-2, 6.99 ERA, $-208):
The Mariners are 0-4 in LeBlanc's last four starts. The lefty has struggled all year with a WHIP of 1.66 and BAA of .312, which is bad news with Seattle going up against a Houston lineup that has the fourth-best batting average (.283) and second-best slugging percentage (.510) in the majors against southpaws.

The Astros will be starting rookie Corbin Martin who is 1-1 in four starts with a 5.51 ERA, 1.71 WHIP and .284 BAA. But run-support could still be lacking for LeBlanc, with the M's batting just .225 at home. The Mariners are priced as +115 underdogs with the Over/Under set at 9.5.

3 STRIKES

ON THEIR HEELS

The San Diego Padres come into Monday off two straight losses to the Miami Marlins and have just two wins in their last seven games. During those five defeats, the Padres have been roughed up in the early innings, allowing a total of 26 runs in the first five innings ? an average of 5.2 runs per game in the opening five frames ? including giving up seven and five first-five runs in those losses to Miami.

San Diego starter Eric Lauer has a 4.25 ERA through the first five frames this season and has been especially generous to batters in the fourth inning (15.30 ERA). The Philadelphia Phillies, Monday?s opponents, are plating an average of 2.88 runs in the opening five innings so far in 2019 and will be itching to put some ticks on the scoresheet after plating only six total runs in a three-game series sweep at the hands of the L.A. Dodgers this past weekend. Books have the Phillies? first-five team total set at two runs (Over -115).

UNDER WONDERS

The Houston Astros take the field Monday as the second-best Under bet in the majors, with a 23-34-3 Over/Under record in 2019 (59.6% Unders). A good part of that mark has to do with the club?s stingy play on the road, boasting a collective 3.10 ERA as a visitor which has manifested itself into a 11-18-1 O/U count.

Ahead of the Astros are the Cleveland Indians at 23-35-1 Over/Under (60.3% Unders) while the Cincinnati Reds (23-34-2 O/U), Milwaukee Brewers (25-34-1 O/U), and Philadelphia Phillies (25-32-2 O/U) round out the Top 5 Under plays.

Why are these records notable? Well, so far, the 2019 MLB campaign has produced 9.4 runs per game ? the highest scoring rate since the 2007 season in which clubs plated an average of 9.6 runs per contests. Heading into Monday, the 2019 season has produced a 423-419-38 Over/Under record ? with just 50.23 percent of games going Over.

WORLD SERIES UPDATE

With just four games on the MLB odds board Monday, it?s the perfect time to check in on the latest odds to win the World Series. The Los Angeles Dodgers are +275 front runners, taking a 41-19 record into Monday?s action.

Behind the Dodgers are the Houston Astros at +300, New York Yankees at +550, Minnesota Twins at +750, and Philadelphia Phillies at +1,200.

Buehler, Seager held Dodgers beat Diamondbacks 3-1
June 4, 2019
By The Associated Press

PHOENIX (AP) Walker Buehler pitched eight innings of two-hit ball and Corey Seager hit a three-run homer as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Arizona Diamondback 3-1 Monday in the opener of a three-game series.

The NL West-leading Dodgers won their sixth straight, improving to 42-19. The Diamondbacks saw their two-game winning streak halted.

Seager hit a full-count pitch from Arizona starter Robbie Ray (4-3) out to left-center field in the top of the fourth to break a scoreless tie. Justin Turner singled and David Freese walked with one out ahead of Seager's eight homer of the season.

Buehler (6-1) carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the fifth inning and got the first two outs before Christian Walker homered. Buehler struck out a season-high 11 without a walk for his first career win over the Diamondbacks.

Arizona failed to provide enough run support for Ray, who gave up three runs on six hits in seven innings and struck out nine.

Kenley Jansen worked the ninth inning for his 18th save in 20 chances. Arizona brought the tying run to the plate with two outs, but David Peralta popped out to end the game.

CUBS 8, ANGELS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Jon Lester allowed one run in seven innings, and Chicago beat Los Angeles in the makeup of a contest scheduled for April 14 that was postponed because of inclement weather.

Coming off three straight losses at St. Louis in which they scored six total runs, the Cubs broke loose with a five-run sixth inning. Javier Baez began the onslaught with a run-scoring double, one of his three RBIs, as Chicago picked up its second win in its past eight games.

Lester (4-4) allowed four singles, walked one and struck out six, giving up his only run on a sacrifice fly by Jonathan Lucroy in the seventh.

Former Cub Trevor Cahill (2-6) was charged with five runs on six hits and two walks in 4 1/3 innings in relief of opener Cam Bedrosian. Cahill has one win in his last nine appearances.

Baez and Willson Contreras homered off Luis Garcia in the seventh.

Monday?s quiz
Sacramento is the state capital of California.

Sunday?s quiz
Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers meet at Pittsburgh?s Point State Park to form the Ohio River.

*******************************

Tuesday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??

13) Angels played in Seattle Sunday afternoon, played a makeup game in Wrigley Field on Monday, and host the A?s in Anaheim tonight; that is 3,462 miles in three days, the 3rd-most miles any MLB team has travelled in a 3-day period.

12) As of Monday afternoon, there were 806 players in the college basketball transfer portal; with 353 D-I hoop teams, that works out to 2.28 players per team.. Thats a lot.

178 of the transfers are grad transfers, who are immediately eligible.

11) Michigan coach Juwan Howard did a very smart thing Monday and hired former St Joe?s assistant Phil Martelli as an assistant. Guys who are new head coaches need an experienced voice to help them avoid some of the pitfalls of their job.

10) When you watch and read about the baseball draft, keep in mind that Mike Trout was the 25th pick in the 2009 MLB Draft. Scouting/drafting is an inexact science.

9) On May 1st, Minnesota Twins were 20-1 to win the World Series; 33 days later, they?re down to 13-2 to win the Series.

8) Sports betting legislation passed in Illinois this week; meanwhile here in New York, we have crickets??nothing happening. NFL training camps start next month.

7) Orioles took Oregon State C Adley Rutschman with the first pick of the MLB Draft, the first catcher taken first since Buster Posey in 2001.

Royals took SS Bobby Witt Jr with the #2 pick; his dad Bobby Witt pitched in the major leagues for 16 seasons.

6) Breakdown of DT Gerald McCoy?s deal with the Carolina Panthers:
? 1 year, $4M to sign.
? $3M base salary
? $500K camp roster bonus.
? $500K in 45-man per game bonus
? 6.5 sacks for $500k.
? 8 sacks gets him $1.5M.
? $250K for Pro Bowl.
? $250K for playoffs.
? $4M guaranteed.
Worth noting that Carolina/Tampa Bay (McCoy?s old team) are division rivals.

5) Friday, a bettor in Sparks, NV played a $5, 10-team parlay and hit it for $3,605; four of the ten wagers were underdogs. Pretty impressive.

4) Cubs 6, Angels 1? In his first game as a Cub, Carlos Gonzalez made a great diving catch in top of 7th inning to rob Jonathan Lucroy of a bases loaded double.

3) Milwaukee Brewers activated Travis Shaw from the IL and demoted rookie 2B Keston Huira, despite Huira hitting five home runs and having an .865 OPS in only 17 games. Milwaukee also DFA?d 1B Jesus Aguilar.

2) This was the first baseball draft ever where none of the first six picks were pitchers.

1) Excellent news: Mets broadcaster Ron Darling will be back in the booth tonight for the Mets-Giants game; Darling has been battling thyroid cancer the last few months but has been cleared to return to work. He is a friendly voice in the booth; great to have him back.

LEADING OFF: Angels stop at Wrigley, Bellinger gets off day
June 3, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors on Tuesday:

TRAVELING ANGELS

The Angels took a circuitous route back to Los Angeles for the start of an eight-game homestand following Sunday's victory over the Mariners in Seattle.

The Angels traveled first to Chicago to face the Cubs to make up a game that was snowed out in April. They arrived at the team hotel shortly after midnight.

''I think everyone got a good night's sleep,'' manager Brad Ausmus said. ''With a 3 o'clock start, you don't have to get up too, too early. It's just a pain having to travel four hours and then 4+ hours back in a 24-hour period, but it's better than getting in at 6 in the morning. It's an inconvenience, but we'll get over it.''

Los Angeles lost 8-1 to the Cubs and opens a three-game set against Oakland on Tuesday.

DAY OF REST

Major league batting leader Cody Bellinger was out of the starting lineup for the Los Angeles Dodgers' series opener against the Diamondbacks in Arizona.

Bellinger, who's batting .376 with 20 home runs, missed his third game of the season Monday to rest.

Bellinger has played in 58 of 60 games this season, having missed a game in April and May. Manager Dave Roberts said it was just a normal day off given Bellinger's workload this season. He has a team-leading 210 at-bats and has played first base along with all three outfield positions.

Max Muncy was also held out for rest. Muncy's 197 at-bats are third-most on the team.

DRAFTING

The Baltimore Orioles selected Oregon State switch-hitting catcher Adley Rutschman with the No. 1 pick in the draft.

The announcement at MLB Network studios marked the second time the Orioles have led off the draft, and first since they took LSU pitcher Ben McDonald in 1989.

The 21-year-old Rutschman had been the favorite to go first overall since he led Oregon State to the College World Series title last year and was selected as the most outstanding player. He followed that up with a dominant junior season at the plate - hitting .411 with a career-best 17 homers to go along with 58 RBIs and a school-record 76 walks - and behind it, throwing out 13 of 27 baserunners for the Beavers.

A native of Sherwood, Oregon, he is a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award given to the country's top college player. He was also the Pac-12 player of the year and the conference's co-defensive player of year.

Rounds 3-10 of the draft are scheduled for Tuesday, with rounds 11-40 on Wednesday. The second and third days of the draft will be held via conference calls with teams.

BACK IN THE BOOTH

Mets announcer Ron Darling is set to return to the team's broadcast booth Tuesday night following surgery to treat thyroid cancer.

Darling said April 13 he was taking a medical leave. On May 6, he said a mass had been removed and he planned to be back at work in about a month.

The 58-year-old former pitcher said in a statement Monday his doctors tell him his cancer has been ''stabilized for now'' and he has been cleared to work. He adds that he will be monitored closely for the next several months.

Darling was 136-116 from 1983-95 and helped the Mets win the 1986 World Series.

Ballpark Figures - Week 11

Ten Little Indians

The Minnesota Twins swing into Progressive Field on Tuesday to kick off a series against the Cleveland Indians. Minnesota holds an 11 1/2-game lead of the defending AL Central Division champs, so it might not be as important of a series to them as it is to the Tribe. In the opener the Indians will use RHP Shane Bieber against rookie LHP Devin Smeltzer. Bieber has been one of the better pitchers for the Indians, going 4-2 with a 3.67 ERA and .274 opponent one-base percentage while striking out an impressive 85 batters over 68 2/3 innings. The southpaw Smeltzer made his major league debut on May 28, spinning six scoreless with three hits and seven strikeouts over six innings in a no-decision against the Milwaukee Brewers. Now he will make his first career starts on the road.

The Twins have fired to the top of the AL Central with 13 victories over the past 16 road games, and they're an impressive 21-5 in the past 26 games against Central foes. In addition, they're 6-1 in the past seven road outings against teams with a winning home record and 38-13 in the past 51 games against right-handed starting pitchers. They have also dominated the dregs of the league, going 36-15 across the past 51 games against teams with a losing overall record.

For the Indians, they're just 1-6 across their past seven games at home, and they're 0-4 in the past four series openers while winning just four of their past 14 games overall. They have struggled inside the division, too, winning only four of their past 13 games overall. Bieber could be the answer, however, as the Indians have won each of his past four home starts, and six of his past seven against winning sides while taking five of his past six starts overall. In addition, the Twins are just 1-4 in their past five games in Cleveland, although the Indians were playing a lot more consistent baseball during that stretch.

As far as the total is concerned, the under is 4-1-1 in the past six meetings in Cleveland and 4-1-1 in the past six meetings overall, too. The over has dominated for the Twins lately, going 2-0-2 in their past four overall, and 4-0-2 in their past six games away from home. The over is also 3-0-2 in the past five road outings against right-handed starting pitchers, while going 7-3-1 in the past 11 following a win. The under is 5-2 in their past seven inside the division, however. The under is also 7-2 in Cleveland's past nine against division rivals, while going 5-1 in the past six games at home. The under is 18-8 in their past 26 games, too.

Looking Ahead

Tuesday, June 4

It's a battle between southpaws when the Atlanta Braves and Pittsburgh Pirates do battle in the Steel City on Tuesday. The Braves are 4-1 in LHP Max Fried's past five outings on the road while going 4-1 in his past five inside the division. The Braves are 8-2 across the past 10 on the road, too, while going 4-0 in their past four vs. LHP. However, the Braves are 0-7 in their past seven following a day off, and they are 0-7 in their past seven Tuesday games, for whatever that's worth. The Bucs are 1-6 in the past seven at home and 1-6 in the past seven against teams with a winning overall mark. They're also 3-8 in the past 11 overall and 2-7 in the past nine against left-handed starting pitchers. They have won LHP Steven Brault's past four starts, and they're 5-1 in his past six outings at home while going 6-2 in his past eight tries against winning teams.

The Giants and Mets hook up in Queens, and it's a nice pitching matchup with LHP Madison Bumgarner and RHP Noah Syndergaard squaring off. San Francisco has won just three of the past 11 overall, and they're 0-7 in their past seven series openers. They're also just 7-19 in MadBum's past 26 road starts, and 1-7 in his past eight kicking off a new series. The Mets have won just one of the past five, but they're 9-4 in Syndergaard's past 13 home outings, while going 10-3 in his past 13 against losing teams. They Mets are also 9-1 in the past 10 at home, and 6-1 in their ;ast seven at home vs. LHP.

The A's and Angels hook up, and Oakland is looking to stay hot on the road. They have won six in a row away from the Bay Area, and they're 4-0 in the past four on the road vs. RHP. The A's have dropped five in a row, and they're 0-5 in the past five vs. RHP, too. Frankie Montas could change that, as the A's are 8-3 in his past 11 outings against teams with a losing record. The Halos are just 2-5 in the past seven at home, and 1-4 in the past five openers of a series. However, they are 13-5 in the past 18 at home vs. RHP while going 16-5 in the past 21 home dates against teams with a losing road record.

Weather Report
The winds will be blowing in at 10-13 mph from right field for the Rays-Tigers battle. It will be the opposite for the Giants-Mets game in Queens, with winds blowing 9-12 mph out to right field.

On the north side of Chicago, the Rockies and Cubs will be experiencing a jetstream blowing out to left-center field at an 11-14 mph clip. The Red Sox-Royals game will also feature gusting winds of 11-14 mph blowing out to the fountains in left-center field. Across I-70, the Reds and Cardinals will also face a stiff 10-13 mph wind blowing into the left-field seats.

Wednesday, June 5

The Yankees will use LHP James Paxton, back from injury, up against RHP Trent Thornton is a game which appears heavily skewed in favor of the visitors. The Yankees are a perfect 6-0 in their past six road games against a right-handed starter, while going 39-18 in the past 57 overall vs. RHP. The Yankees have also won five straight starts by Paxton. For the Jays, they're 1-5 in Thornton's past six home outings. They have also struggled against southpaws, going 5-11 in the past 16 at home vs. LHP, and 16-39 in the past 55 overall against lefties. The over is 6-2-1 in New York's past nine vs. RHP, while the over is 4-0-1 for Toronto in their past five vs. LHP.

The Red Sox roll out LHP Chris Sale for their game in Kansas City against RHP Jakob Junis of the Royals. The Red Sox have won five of Sale's past six tries against AL Central opponents, and they're 26-11 in his past 37 against losing teams. However, they have won just two of his past seven on the road, and three of his past 12 starts overall. The Royals are 1-4 over Junis' past five outings, and 3-8 in his past 11 home starts against teams iwth a winning record. In addition, the under is 6-0 in Sale's past six road outings, and 6-1 in his past seven overall. The under is 3-1-1 in Junis' past five showings against a team with a winning overall mark.

The Astros and Mariners play on, with RHP Brad Peacock and RHP Mike Leake locking horns. Houston has won each of Peacock's past five outings against AL West teams, while going 21-7 in his past 28 starts overall. They're also 6-2 in his past eight road outings against teams with a losing record. For the M's, they have managed wins in just two of Leake's past nine starts, while going 0-4 in his past four tries against teams with a winning overall mark. The under is 3-1-1 in Peacock's past five road outings, and 3-0-2 in his past five overall. The under is 4-1 in Leake's past five starts, while going 10-3 in his past 13 against winning teams. The under is also 4-1 in Peacock's past five showings against the Mariners.

Weather Report
In the matinee game between the White Sox and Nationals, the teams will face a stiff wind blowing out to right-center field at 12-15 mph to make things interesting for the pitchers. For the second straight day, the Giants and Mets will face gusty winds blowing out, this time at 12-15 mph to straightaway center field. The teams will also be playing beat the clock, as the chances of rain pick up from 25 percent at 7 p.m. ET to 55 percent at 9 p.m. ET.

The Rays and Tigers face the potential of a lengthy delay and/or postponement, with a rain forecast of 40 percent of higher from 7-10 p.m. , tapering off to 21 percent by 11 p.m. If they do get underway, winds will be blowing out 10-13 mph to center field. In Cleveland, the rains will be more steady all throughout the day, and since these teams play so frequently, a postponement and day-night doubleheader reschedule down the road is likely.

The O's and Rangers will face 40 percent chances of rain all throughout the afternoon and evening, with winds blowing in from left-center field at 10-13 mph.

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Hyun-Jin Ryu, Los Angeles Dodgers (8-1, 1.48 ERA, $450):
Ryu has been streaking all season long, but his last five starts have been incredible. The lefty has pitched to a ridiculous 0.48 ERA and a 0.72 WHIP while limiting opponents to a .199 on base percentage. His strikeout-to-walk ratio is also 10-1 in that stretch.

Ryu and the Dodgers will look to keep it rolling when they visit the Diamondbacks tonight. Los Angeles is currently a hefty -210 favorite with a total of 9.5.

SLUMPING

Jerad Eickhoff, Philadelphia Phillies (2-3, 4.10 ERA, $267):
Eickhoff has cooled off dramatically after a hot start to his season. Over his last four starts he has been roughed up to the tune of an 8.35 ERA and a 1.58 WHIP. The right-hander has been really hurt by the long ball, allowing opponents to hit for a .763 slugging percentage while surrendering 10 dingers.

Eickhoff will look to get back on track as the Phillies visit the Padres tonight. Philadelphia is currently a +130 road dog with a total sitting at 7.5.

3 STRIKES

MATCHUP DISADVANTAGE

The Detroit Tigers are the second-worst team in the majors at home with a 9-17 record. Today the Tigers host the Tampa Bay Rays who are the second-best team in the majors on the road with a 18-8 record. As if that wasn't enough of a mismatch the Rays will have reigning AL Cy Young winner Blake Snell (3.06 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, .214 BAA) on the mound, while the Tigers will go with Ryan Carpenter and his 7.48 ERA.

The Rays are -166 favorites on the runline at FanDuel, while the -2.5 runline pays out at -104.

"MADISON" SQUARE GARDEN

Some athletes fade in the bright lights of a big city, others thrive. Madison Bumgarner has been the latter when in New York, dominating the Mets on their home-field. In five career regular season starts at Citi Field he has gone 5-0 with a 0.73 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and .155 BAA.

Today Bumgarner and the Giants face off against Noah Syndergaard and the Mets in a battle between two aces that have struggled at times this year. The Giants are +110 underdogs and might be worth taking a flier considering Bumgarner's track record in The Big Apple.

PHILLY'S PROBLEMS AT PETCO

Philadelphia enters San Diego having gone 0-5 in their last five games overall and 1-6 in their previous seven games at Petco Park. Right-hander Jerad Eickhoff will get the start for the Phillies and he's allowed at least four runs and two homers in each of his last four starts. The Phillies are just 4-13 in Eickhoff's last 17 starts on the road.

The Padres will have rookie sensation Chris Paddack and his 4-3 record and 2.40 ERA on the mound, but Paddack is coming off his worst performance as a pro, allowing four runs and three homers in the five innings to the Yankees. But San Diego is still 5-2 in their previous seven games at home and 7-3 in Paddack's last 10 starts. The Friars are -152 favorites tonight.

Strasburg earns 100th win, Nationals beat White Sox 9-5
June 4, 2019
By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) Stephen Strasburg earned his 100th career victory, Anthony Rendon homered and drove in five runs and the Washington Nationals rallied past the Chicago White Sox 9-5 on Tuesday.

Strasburg (6-3 gave up four runs in a 39-pitch first inning and spotted Chicago a 5-0 lead. He completed five innings and gave Washington's offense time to solve former teammate and White Sox starter Reynaldo Lopez.

Rendon belted a two-run double in the third, then smacked a three-run homer in the fifth to chase Lopez (3-6) and give the Nationals a 6-5 lead.

Reliever Josh Osich surrendered back-to-back doubles before Victor Robles belted a two-run homer to make it 9-5. Washington's six runs in the fifth were its most in any inning this season.

Sean Doolittle recorded the final two outs for his 13th save in 15 opportunities.

Howie Kendrick homered for the Nationals, who have won eight of their last 10. Yoan Moncada hit Chicago's lone homer, a solo shot in the second.

Strasburg struck out six as he improved to 100-55, becoming the first National to reach the 100-win plateau since the franchise moved from Montreal. The right-hander earned a victory while allowing more than four runs for the first time in his career.

GIANTS 9, METS 3, 10 INNINGS

NEW YORK (AP) - Bruce Bochy joined John McGraw as the only Giants managers to win 1,000 regular-season games when San Francisco beat New York behind Stephen Vogt's tiebreaking, two-run double in the 10th inning.

On a night that began as a rematch between the Giants' Madison Bumgarner and Noah Syndergaard of their duel in the 2016 NL wild-card game, New York rallied from a 2-0 deficit to take a sixth-inning lead only for its bullpen to falter again.

Bochy has 1,003 losses in San Francisco and is 1,951-1,978 during a 25-year career as a major league manager that started with a dozen years in San Diego.

McGraw led the New York Giants to 2,583 wins from 1902-32.

Appearing for the fifth time in an eight-day span, Robert Gsellman (1-1) gave up a single to pinch-hitter Tyler Austin leading off the 10th, walked Brandon Belt and bounced a wild pitch. Vogt lined a changeup over leaping Michael Conforto and off the right-field fence.

Mark Melancon (2-0) pitched a perfect ninth.

Wilson Ramos hit a solo homer and rookie Pete Alonso hit a two-run drive for the Mets.

BLUE JAYS 4, YANKEES 3

TORONTO (AP) - Freddy Galvis hit a two-run home run, Randal Grichuk added a solo shot and Toronto held off New York to end a season-worst six-game slide.

Toronto closer Ken Giles struck out Gleyber Torres with two on in the ninth to wrap his 11th save, and Eric Sogard had three hits as the Blue Jays won for the first time since beating San Diego on May 26. Toronto went winless on a six-game trip to Tampa Bay and Colorado.

Clint Frazier and Aaron Hicks homered for the AL East-leading Yankees, who lost consecutive games for the first time in more than a month. New York's last back-to-back defeats came April 30 and May 1 at Arizona. The Yankees lost 8-5 to Boston on Sunday.

Masahiro Tanaka (3-5) lost his second straight start, allowing four runs and six hits in six innings.

Daniel Hudson (4-2) pitched 1 1/3 innings and Giles got the final four outs.

TIGERS 9, RAYS 6

DETROIT (AP) - Miguel Cabrera had a grand slam among his three hits as Detroit snapped a 10-game home losing streak with a victory over Tampa Bay.

Cabrera, who had five RBIs, was back in the lineup after missing two games with chronic knee pain.

Detroit last won at home on May 8, and went 0-9 on a homestand from May 13-23.

Willy Adames hit a grand slam for the Rays.

Blake Snell (3-5) allowed six runs on seven hits and two walks in 4 1/3 innings. The six earned runs were one short of his career high, set on May 1 against the Kansas City Royals.

Ryan Carpenter (1-2) picked up his second career win, giving up two runs on seven hits in seven innings. Shane Greene pitched the ninth for his 19th save in 20 tries.

INDIANS 5, TWINS 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - Francisco Lindor hit two of Cleveland's four home runs in a victory over Minnesota.

Lindor hit a solo home run in the third and broke a 1-all tie with a two-run homer in the fifth. Roberto Perez and Jake Bauers added back-to-back homers in the seventh.

Minnesota came into the game with best record in baseball and holds a 10 +-game lead over Cleveland in AL Central.

Shane Bieber (5-2) gave up solo homers to Marwin Gonzalez in the second and Eddie Rosario in the sixth. He allowed two runs and struck out seven in seven-plus innings.

Rookie left-hander Devin Smeltzer (0-1) gave up all four homers in his second major league start. Smeltzer allowed five runs in 6 1/3 innings.

BRAVES 12, PIRATES 5

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Austin Riley and Josh Donaldson hit three-run home runs in consecutive innings, and Atlanta rallied past Pittsburgh.

Freddie Freeman added a two-run homer, his 15th, in a three-run ninth inning that sealed the Braves third straight win.

Riley sent a slider from Kyle Crick (2-2) over the wall in right field for his ninth home run of the season in the seventh, turning a 5-3 deficit into a one-run lead. Donaldson pushed the lead to 9-5 in the eighth with a 439-foot shot to left-center field for his eighth.

Dan Winkler (2-1) had one strikeout in a scoreless sixth inning to get the win. Braves starter Max Fried gave up a season-high five runs and nine hits in four innings.

Melky Cabrera had two hits, including a two-run homer, and three RBI, batting cleanup for Pittsburgh in place of Josh Bell.

Steven Brault allowed two runs and five hits in four innings.

MARLINS 16, BREWERS 0

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Garrett Cooper had two hits and scored twice during Miami's franchise-record, 11-run fifth inning in a rout of Milwaukee.

Cooper matched a career high with four hits and scored four times, leading the way as last-place Miami rolled to its 12th win in 17 games. Cooper, Starlin Castro and Brian Anderson homered, and rookie Harold Ramirez continued his hot start with two hits and two RBIs.

Every player in Miami's starting lineup had at least one hit, scored at least once and drove in at least one run. Even pitcher Pablo Lopez got into the act, hitting an RBI double in the fifth that drew a hearty round of boos from the Miller Park crowd of 25,364.

Milwaukee had won five of seven. But it was shut down by Lopez (4-5) and three relievers, finishing with six hits in its worst loss of the season.

It was already 4-0 when Chase Anderson (3-1) was pulled after four ineffective innings.

CUBS 6, ROCKIES 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Kyle Schwarber and Javier Baez homered, Kyle Hendricks was solid through seven innings and the Chicago ended Colorado's season-high eight-game winning streak.

Carlos Gonzalez had two RBIs - on a double and sacrifice fly - as he started in right field for a second straight game.

Hendricks (6-4) allowed three runs and six hits while striking out 10 - including five in a row over the second and third innings.

Steve Cishek followed with a perfect eighth. Pedro Strop pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his fifth save in seven chances.

Daniel Murphy hit a solo shot and drove in another run with a single. Nolan Arenado extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a single and Tony Wolters had an RBI, but the Rockies came up short in a rematch of last year's NL Wild Card game.

Colorado's Jeff Hoffman (1-2) gave up five runs and six hits through six innings in this third start since being recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque on May 24.

RED SOX 8, ROYALS 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Eduardo Nunez belted a pinch-hit, three-run homer to break open a close game in the eighth inning, and Boston went on to beat Kansas City.

Rafael Devers also drove in a pair of runs for the Red Sox.

Eduardo Rodriguez (6-3) was stingy over 5 2/3 innings, allowing just six hits while striking out seven. His only mistake came in the second, when Cheslor Cuthbert hit a two-run shot to left.

Glenn Sparkman matched Rodriguez most of the way, but he left a runner on base when he was lifted with one out in the sixth. Scott Barlow (1-2) promptly gave up the lead with a miserable relief outing, and Nunez's homer off Jake Diekman in the eighth inning was merely the finishing touch.

ORIOLES 12, RANGERS 11

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Pedro Severino hit a career-high three home runs and thwarted Texas' ninth-inning rally with a wild defensive play, lifting Baltimore.

Texas scored six runs in the ninth and had the tying run on base with one out when Mychal Givens replaced Richard Bleier on the mound. Givens struck out Delino DeShields and Elvis Andrus, but strike three to Andrus was a wild pitch that went to the backstop. Severino scrambled to retrieve the ball, then delivered a perfect throw to first baseman Chris Davis a step ahead of Andrus for the final out.

Dwight Smith Jr. had a career-high six RBIs for Baltimore. Dylan Bundy (3-6) earned his first win since May 17, allowing three runs and six hits in five-plus innings. Givens earned his fifth save.

Drew Smyly (1-4) gave up seven runs and eight hits in 3 1/3 innings as Texas ended a three-game winning streak.

Keon Broxton hit his third home run in nine games with the Orioles and has hits in six games.

Shin-Soo Choo led off Texas' first with his 200th career home run.

REDS 4, CARDINALS 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Luis Castillo pitched one-run ball over six innings, Yasiel Puig homered and Cincinnati beat St. Louis following a rain delay of 1 hour, 20 minutes.

The loss snapped the Cardinals' four-game winning streak after sweeping the Chicago Cubs over the weekend.

Castillo (6-1) gave up two hits, walked four and struck out eight with 111 pitches. Castillo did not allow a hit after the first inning. He retired his final 12 batters following a walk in the third. Raisel Iglesias pitched the ninth for his 12th save in 14 chances.

St. Louis starter Genesis Cabrera (0-2) pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing four runs, three earned, with eight hits and two walks.

DODGERS 9, DIAMONDBACKS 0

PHOENIX (AP) - Hyun-Jin Ryu allowed three hits in seven scoreless innings, Cody Bellinger hit a two-run triple after a rare day off and Los Angeles stretched its winning streak to seven games with a rout of Arizona.

Ryu (9-1) needed 25 pitches to get through the first inning thanks to shaky defense behind him, but dominated after that to win his seventh straight start.

Bellinger had a two-run triple in his first at-bat against Taylor Clarke (1-2) following his first day off since May 3. He went 1 for 4, dropping his big league-best average to .374.

Enrique Hernandez homered and had two RBIs for the NL West-leading Dodgers, who have won 11 of 12. Corey Seager hit a pair of run-scoring doubles and David Freese a two-run double.

The Diamondbacks were held to three hits in their seventh loss in nine games.

ATHLETICS 4, ANGELS 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Ramon Laureano had two hits, including a home run, Frankie Montas threw six solid innings and Oakland snapped a five-game losing streak by beating Los Angeles.

Laureano extended the majors' longest active hitting streak to 17 games with a double in the fourth inning. He then hit a two-run shot off Griffin Canning (2-2) to left to extend Oakland's lead to 4-0 in the sixth.

Montas allowed two runs on four hits to improve to 7-2. His only mistakes came in the sixth inning when he hit Mike Trout with a splitter on the 13th pitch of the at-bat. Shohei Ohtani followed with a two-run drive to center.

The four hits by the Angels is a season low at home and the ninth time this season they have been held to four or fewer.

Blake Treinen retired the side in the ninth for his 12th save.

PHILLIES 9, PADRES 6

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Jay Bruce hit a grand slam and a two-run homer, and Philadelphia beat San Diego to snap a five-game skid.

Bruce tied a career high with six RBIs in his second game since being acquired by the Phillies. His ninth career slam gave Philadelphia a lift on the day it learned outfielder Andrew McCutchen will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL.

Jerad Eickhoff (3-3) pitched six innings and surrendered three runs and four hits, striking out five.

Rookie Chris Paddack (4-4) was rocked for the third time in four starts. He lasted 4 1/3 innings and was charged with six runs (five earned) on eight hits, with four strikeouts.

Hector Neris pitched the ninth for his 11th save.

The Padres got two homers from Franmil Reyes and a two-run shot by Eric Hosmer.

Scott Kingery and Maikel Franco added homers for the Phillies.

ASTROS 11, MARINERS 5

SEATTLE (AP) - Alex Bregman had two hits and three RBIs, and seven other Astros drove in at least one run as Houston beat Seattle its fifth straight win.

The Astros have won 9 of 11 and are 5-0 on their road trip. They also are 5-0 this season against the Mariners, who have lost four straight.

Astros left-hander Reymin Guduan (1-0) was recalled for Triple-A Round Rock on Tuesday and came in to pitch against the left-hand hitting Vogelbach, who sent a liner off the wall in center to clear the bases.

Andrew Moore, making his first major league appearance since September of 2017, gave up four runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings as the Mariners starter. Brandon Brennan (2-4) allowed three runs in the sixth.

Jake Marisnick had two hits and two RBIs for Houston, and Tony Kemp and Robinson Chirinos each homered.

Mitch Haniger hit his 15th home run of the season for the Mariners.

Wednesday?s 6-pack

? Giants 9, Mets 3 (10)? If you bet the under, my condolences.

? It is June 5; the Phillies have already used 41 players this year.

? Dodgers 9, Arizona 0? Hyun-Jin Ryu allowed two ER in his last 44.2 IP.

? If you?re wondering, Tim Tebow is batting .159 at AAA Syracuse.

? RIP Alan Young, who passed away at 96; he played Wilbur Post on the classic TV show Mr Ed.

? Bruins? Zdeno Chara (broken jaw) hasn?t been ruled out of Game 5 in the Stanley Cup finals. Hockey players are tough.

Quotes of the Day
?No, I don?t regret it. And to be fair, I don?t think I owe anyone an explanation because it?s not a rule that I have to speak??.since I got traded over here it?s been some stories that shouldn?t have come out that have come out. And it?s difficult because the way I am perceived by people is not how I think I really am.?
Clint Frazier

Wednesday?s quiz
When was last time the NBA Finals ended in a 4-0 sweep?

Tuesday?s quiz
San Antonio Spurs were the last Western Conference team other than Golden State to play in the NBA Finals; they beat Miami in the 2014 Finals.

Monday?s quiz
Sacramento is the state capital of California.

*****************************

Wednesday?s List of 13: Mid-week musings??.

13) There are 256 regular season games in the NFL every year; last year, 73 of them (28.5%) were decided by 3 or fewer points.

12) Las Vegas Bowl is one of the first beneficiaries of the new domed stadium in Las Vegas; the LV Bowl will now feature a matchup of a Pac-12 team vs either an SEC team or Big 14 team every year, starting in 2020. The bowl also moves into a post-Christmas slot; the #2 Pac-12 team will be heading to Las Vegas for this game.

11) Since 2011, there have been 12 Pac-12-SEC football games:
2011:
LSU +3 W40-27 vs Oregon
2012:
LSU -23 W41-3 Washington
Missouri -3 W24-20 Arizona State
2013:
Tennessee +28 L14-59 @ Oregon
Auburn -14 W31-24 Auburn
2015:
Tex A&M -3 W38-17 vs Arizona St.
2016:
Tex A&M -3 W31-24 OT UCLA
Alabama -11.5 W52-6 vs USC
Alabama -13.5 W24-7 vs Washington
2017:
Tex A&M +5.5 L44-45 @ UCLA
Ole Miss -7 L16-27 @ California
2018:
Auburn -2 W21-16 vs Washington

SEC teams are 9-3 SU in those games, 9-3 vs spread, 7-2 when favored.

10) Michigan landed former Alabama assistant Josh Gattis as its new offensive coordinator at least in part because Nick Saban doesn?t want a play caller who has never called plays before, so he wouldn?t name Gattis as the Crimson Tide?s OC.

As a player, Gattis starred at safety for Wake Forest and was the leader of the only Demon Deacons team that won the ACC title and went to the Orange Bowl.

9) North Carolina football coach Mack Brown has had his right knee replaced by a surgeon who once played for him, Dr. Michael Bolognesi, who played DB for Brown at UNC from 1989-93.

8) There were only three high school pitchers taken in the first round of the baseball draft, the lowest amount since 2008.

7) Baseball stuff:
? Phillies lost OF Andrew McCutchen (torn ACL) for the season.
? Tigers put 3B Jeimer Candelario (shoulder) on IL.
? Indians put P Jefry Rodriguez (shoulder) on IL.
? Royals put 3B Hunter Dozier (right side) on IL.

6) Northern Arizona basketball coach Jack Murphy is leaving the Lumberjacks to become the associate head coach at Arizona, his alma mater. Murphy went 78-149 in seven years at NAU and was going into the final year of his contract, which means he was probably getting fired next spring unless the Lumberjacks won the Big Sky, so he jumped ship before he got pushed.

5) Odds to win college basketball national title next April:
8-1? Michigan State
10-1? Kentucky, Duke
12-1? Kansas, Memphis
16-1? North Carolina, Villanova
20-1? Gonzaga, Louisville, Oregon, Virginia

4) Kawhi Leonard filed a lawsuit against Nike on Monday in California in an attempt to reclaim control over a logo Leonard says he created, when he was a Nike client. Leonard signed a deal with New Balance earlier this season.

3) UConn added grad transfer QB Micah Lemon from NC State, which prompted Huskies? QB Marvin Washington to announce he was leaving UConn. Huskies? WR Keyion Dixon also said he would be leaving the UConn program.

2) RJ Hampton was a highly sought after basketball recruit who instead chose to play pro ball in New Zealand this season, which is his business, but supposedly he signed the pro contract a full month before he told the college teams that he wouldn?t be playing for them.

Why would someone do this? Once he signed the contract, there was no going back. Lot of people, both coaches/other recruits, were waiting for his decision so the next domino in the process could fall.

Without knowing all the fact, it does seem very selfish.

1) St. Louis Blues have never won a Stanley Cup, but four of their former coaches have won 17 of them; their series with Boston now stands at 2-2. Blues have an interim coach (Craig Berube).

LEADING OFF: Nelson back, Sale slumps, Cutch out, umps hurt
June 4, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Wednesday:

WELCOME BACK

Jimmy Nelson makes his long-awaited return to a big league mound when he starts for Milwaukee against Miami at Miller Park. The right-hander hasn't pitched in the majors since Sept. 8, 2017, when he injured his pitching shoulder diving back to first after rounding the bag on a single. At the time, he was 12-6.

Nelson had surgery and missed last year, when the Brewers reached the NL Championship Series. He had been set to begin a rehab assignment in late April, but that was delayed when his twin daughters were born prematurely.

Now, he's back. Taking the ball on his 30th birthday, too.

''I'm just real anxious, excited about it,'' he said.

Nelson is rejoining the rotation after Milwaukee put pitchers Jhoulys Chacin and Gio Gonzalez on the injured list Sunday.

TOUGH SELL

Boston lefty Chris Sale is tied for the major league lead in losses, taking his 1-7 record into Kauffman Stadium to face the Royals. Sale ranks among the leaders with 98 strikeouts in 68 1/3 innings, but has a 4.35 ERA through 12 starts.

Sale has started the last three All-Star Games for the American League, and threw the final pitch for the World Series last year when the Red Sox clinched another championship.

MINUS MCCUTCHEN

Phillies outfielder Andrew McCutchen is out for the season with a torn knee, and a couple of newcomers will try to take his place. McCutchen tore his left ACL in a rundown Monday, and hopes to be OK for opening day next year.

The injury came a week after Philadelphia outfielder Odubel Herrera was put on administrative leave by Major League Baseball, a day after his arrest in a domestic violence case. His leave has since been extended through June 17 - he cannot play until MLB lifts the restriction.

Last weekend, Philadelphia acquired outfielder Jay Bruce in a trade with Seattle. The Phillies also called up Adam Haseley from Triple-A, and 23-year-old made his major league debut when he started in center field at San Diego on Tuesday night.

UMPS THUMPED

A trio of big league umpires will see how they're feeling a day after they were forced to exit games with injuries.

Plate umpire Mike Everitt left when he was struck in the chest by a 95 mph fastball from White Sox starter Reynaldo Lopez in Washington. The pitch wasn't touched by swinging hitter Trea Turner or catcher James McCann.

Plate ump Tom Hallion left an inning after he was hit in the mask by a foul ball in the Giants-Mets game at Citi Field. Second base umpire Scott Barry was helped off the field in Milwaukee with an apparent leg injury.

All three games continued with three-man crews.
