Boston Common

The Boston Red Sox have looked very ordinary so far this season, and no one expected even 18 regular-season games that they would be dead-last in the majors with a minus-40 run differential. They were scorched by the New York Yankees by an 8-0 score in Tuesday's series opener, and they have just one run over the past two games. The 'under' has connected in three in a row for Boston, and the under is 4-1 in their past five against teams with a losing record, and 4-0 in their past four road games against teams with a losing overall home mark, too. With Nathan Eovaldi on the mound, though, that could turn around. The over is 6-0-1 in his past seven starts, and 4-0 in his past four on the road while going 3-0-1 in his past four games inside the division.

For the Yankees, they too have struggled, and are below .500 midway through April. They were expected to battle the Red Sox in the standings, but not to avoid the basement in the American League East. The under is 6-1 in the past seven home starts for the Yankees, while going 4-1 in their past five games against teams with a winning percentage under .400. Like Eovaldi, the over has been a common 'Happ'-ening for JA Happ. The over is 6-0 across his past six starts, and 5-0 in his past five outings against divisional foes. The over is also 5-1 in Happ's past six hoe outings, and 7-0-1 in his past eight against teams with a losing overall record. The over is also 7-3 in the past 10 meetings between these AL East rivals.

Looking Ahead

Wednesday, April 17

The Giants and Nationals do battle in the nation's capital at 7:05 p.m. ET. The under is 6-1-1 in San Francisco's past eight games against National League East foes, while going 4-1-1 in their past six games overall. The undeer is also 4-1 in Jeff Samardzija's past five starts overall. The over is 5-0 in Washington's past five against teams with a losing record, and 16-6 in their past 22 overall. The over is also 24-9-1 in the past 34 games at home. However, the under is a whopping 16-3 in Jeremy Hellickson's past 19 starts overall, 4-1 in his past five home starts and 4-0 in his past four against teams with a losing overall mark.

The Astros and Athletics continue their battle in Oakland. The under is 8-3 in Houston's past 11 on the road, while going 5-2 in the past seven road outings against a team with a winning home mark. The over is a perfect 8-0 in the past eight overall for Oakland, and 4-0 in the past four against divisional foes. However, the under is 7-3 in the past 10 at home for the A's, and 4-1 in Frankie Montas' past five outings while going 4-1 in his past five inside the division, too. The over is 15-5-1 in the past 21 meetings in this series in Oakland.

Wind Report

The wind won't be a factor in many parks, although the winds will affect the Giants and Nationals. We'll have breezy conditions knocking balls down, as a wind blows 10-13 mph from right field into the face of the batters. If the game in Minneapolis gets underway with a 70 percent chance of rain from 6-9 pm CDT, the batters will be facing stiff wind from 12-15 mph blowing in from the left-center field power alley. In Texas, the wind will also be blowing in from 13-16 mph, keeping totals down.

Thursday, April 18

Hey, for what it's worth (not much), the under is 7-0 in the past seven for the Reds on a Thursday. More importantly, the under is 9-1-1 in their past 11 games against pitchers with a WHIP of 1.15 or less. The under is also 21-6 in their past 27 games on the road, while going 17-5 in their past 22 road games against a teams with a winning record. For the Padres, they like going low on Thursdays, too, going 24-9-1 in their past 34 on the day. The under is 7-3 in their past 10 home games heading into Wednesday. However, in this series, the over is 10-1 in the past 11 meetings, and 4-1-1 in the past six battles at Petco Park.

The Mariners have RHP Felix Hernandez on the bump, and he is opposed by RHP Chris Stratton. The over is 8-3-1 in the past 12 overall for the M's, and 7-3-1 in their past 11 games against right-handed starting pitchers. In addition, the over is 4-1 in King Felix's past five road outings, and 6-2 in his past eight against AL West foes. For the Halos , they entered Wednesday's game with a 16-5-1 mark in their past 22 games, and 9-4 in the past 13 vs. RHP. In addition, tue under is 7-2 in Hernandez's past nine road outings against the Angels, and 15-6-1 in his past 22 overall against the Halos.

Wind Report

For the afternoon game between the Diamondbacks and Braves, there will be a 10-13 mph wind blowing in from center field to home plate. The winds will be blowing out moderately for the Giants-Nationals at 9-12 mph. In Detroit, the White Sox-Tigers game will see rain in the forecast starting right around first pitch. If they do get underway, the winds will be gusting in from 17-20 mph, keeping totals down. Winds will be blowing left to right at Target Field for Jays-Twins, a steady 13 mph wind. For Phillies-Rockies, the winds will be gusting early on from the left-center field power alley to home plate, decreasing as the game progresses.

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Trevor Williams, RHP Pittsburgh Pirates (1-0, 2.45 ERA, $394)
: Williams is off to a strong start to 2019, despite the lone win on his 2019 resume. The right hander has an ERA south of 2.50 through is first three appearances ? all three qualifying as quality starts ? and helped the Bucs cash as +174 underdogs at Washington in his last outing.

SLUMPING

Matt Harvey, RHP Los Angeles Angels (0-1, 10.05 ERA, $72)
: Harvey was bailed out in his most recent effort, allowing six runs on seven hits through just 4 1-3 innings but the Halos put 11 runs on the board to clean up the righty?s mess. Over his last two starts, Harvey has given up 14 runs on 8 1-3 innings with eight of those coming against the Texas Rangers ? today?s opponent.

3 STRIKES

EARLY RISERS

The Tampa Bay Rays have produced early action in the bulk of their games to start the 2019 MLB season. Tampa Bay has scored or allowed at least one first-inning run in 13 of its first 17 games so far. The Rays have been the first to strike on the scoreboard in 10 of those contests, while opponents have had success plating a run in the opening frame in four games, including Tuesday?s 4-2 win over Baltimore in which the Orioles opened scoring on a single from Rio Ruiz in the first. Baseball bettors should take a look at first-inning props and totals.

HOME RUN HAPP

Veteran southpaw J.A. Happ has a new home in the Bronx but the change in venue hasn?t helped in terms of keeping the ball in the park. Happ has allowed at least one home run in each of his three starts to begin 2019, and if you go back to last season, he?s served up dingers in six straight appearances. In fact, the left hander has allowed a total of 18 home runs in his las t 18 outings, going back to June 20 of last year. FanDuel has Red Sox sluggers J.D Martinez and Mookie Betts priced at +230 and +320 to hit a home run Wednesday, respectively.

OOOOOOOO-VERS IN OAKLAND

The Oakland Athletics have been a favorite of Over bettors in the past couple weeks, topping the total in eight straight games heading into tonight?s contest with the Houston Astros (more on that above). Oakland kicked off the schedule as one of the hottest Under plays in baseball, playing Over the number in the season opener then proceeded to finish Under in seven straight games. However, with an abundance of offense ? 5.18 runs per game ? and a dipping defense ? 4.63 ERA ? the Over results are bubbling to the top. Tonight?s total is set at nine runs.

Thursday?s 6-pack

? Rays 8, Orioles 1? Tampa Bay has won 14 of its first 18 games.

? Cubs 6, Marlins 0? Miami is 4-15 and sinking fast.

? Indians 1, Mariners 0? Seattle started season 13-2, has now lost six in a row.

? A?s 2, Astros 1? Oakland beats its division rival for first time in five tries.

? Royals 4, White Sox 3 (10)? Tim Anderson homered, tossed his bat, then got drilled his next time up and the benches emptied. Go figure.

? Pacers (+7.5) were up 2 with 0:51 left in Boston, and not only lost?.they didn?t cover the spread, losing 99-91.

Quote of the Day
?There?s the media. I meet the media twice each day ? before batting practice, and then after the game. I think it?s gone well so far. I really like the group of media members in Baltimore. I also feel like I?m getting better at it. It?s something I?ve never really had any experience with. People ask me if there?s anything I didn?t realize I was getting myself into, and it?s that I?m talking a lot more than I ever have. To the media. To players. To coaches. To a lot of people. You talk a lot as a manager.?
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde

LEADING OFF: Braves need a closer, Royals-Chisox tempers
April 17, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Thursday:

CLOSER NEEDED

The Braves have a big hole in their bullpen now that closer Arodys Vizcaino will miss the rest of the season after having right shoulder surgery. General manager Alex Anthopoulos has heard fans chanting at SunTrust Park for the team to sign free agent closer Craig Kimbrel and bring him back to Atlanta, and he indicated the Braves are exploring all available options.

''There's been a ton of turnover from the beginning of camp to where we are today,'' Anthopoulos said. ''I think it goes without saying we're going to look to do what we can both internally and externally.''

The NL East champion Braves have recently used A.J. Minter as their closer, but he's struggled.

DISCIPLINE DAY?

Major League Baseball will certainly review at the bench-clearing fray that erupted after Kansas City's Brad Keller drilled Tim Anderson with a fastball on Wednesday. In his previous at-bat, the energetic White Sox shortstop had spiked his bat to celebrate a home run.

Anderson, the AL's leading hitter, was ejected along with Keller, Chicago manager Rick Renteria and Royals bench coach Dale Sveum.

Anderson has often talked about encouraging players to express themselves, something MLB has tried to embrace with its ''Let the Kids Play'' marketing campaign. But not everybody in the game sees such exuberance the same way.

AILING

The Red Sox will see how second baseman Dustin Pedroia is feeling, a day after an early exit at Yankee Stadium because of discomfort in his left knee. The 35-year-old former AL MVP was pulled in the second inning.

Pedroia was activated April 9 and is 2 for 20 at the plate. He has been slowed since a slide into his surgically repaired left knee at second base by Baltimore's Manny Machado in April 2017.

Pedroia had left knee surgery in October 2017 and was limited to three games in the majors last year.

WELCOME BACK

The Dodgers return to Milwaukee for the first time since Game 7 of last year's NL Championship Series, when they sank the Brewers to earn a second straight pennant.

Julio Urias got one out for Los Angeles as a reliever in that game, and he'll start the opener of this four-game series. He also faced Milwaukee last Friday and allowed six runs in five innings. Brewers righty Zach Davies makes his second straight start against the Dodgers. He pitched seven innings of one-run ball in a win last Saturday.

Weekend Watch
Joe Williams

Thursday, April 18

The Giants and Nationals have a battle of left-handed pitchers for the matinee game from the nation's capital. San Francisco has won just three of their past 11 on the road against left-handed starting pitchers, and they're 1-6 in the past seven against NL East opponents. In addition, San Francisco is just 7-22 in the past 29 games away from home. The Nationals are 1-5 in the past six vs. LHP, although they're 4-1 in the past five against teams with a losing overall record. The 'over' has connected in five of the past six meetings overall, and the over is 4-1-1 in the past six meetings at Nationals Park.

The Reds have dropped four in a row against NL West opponents, and they're 0-5 in the past five road games against a team with a losing home mark. Cincinnati is also 10-28 in the past 38 contests against teams with a winning overall mark. The Padres have won just once in the past five at home, and they're 0-4 in the past four at home vs. RHP. The under is 22-6 in the past 28 road games, and 18-5 in their past 23 away from home against winning teams. The under is 7-3 in San Diego's past 10 home games, too. However, the over is 10-1 in the past 11 meetings, and 4-1-1 in the past six meetings at Petco Park. Weather Report The wins will be blowing in at a 14-17 mph clip from right field to home plate, and there is a 35 percent chance of rain or greater fort he White Sox-Tigers game all throughout the early-evening hours. A postponement here wouldn't be a surprise. For the Jays-Twins in Minneapolis, the wind will blow out to right field at 10-13 mph. In Denver, wind will also be an issue, but it's blowing in from left-center field at 11-14 mph in the early to middle innings, tapering off to 8-11 mph by the final third of the game.

Friday, April 19

Madison Bumgarner takes the ball on Friday for the series opener against the Pirates in the Steel City. San Francisco is just 1-5 in the past six starts by MadBum, and 0-4 in his past four assignments against NL Central opponents. In addition, they're just 9-23 in his past 32 starts away from home. The Pirates have won four in a row at home, and four of the past five overall. In addition, the Bucs have won 15 of the past 20 games against teams with a losing overall mark. San Francisco has won seven of their past nine trips to Pittsburgh, too.

Justin Verlander makes the start on the road against the Texas Rangers against Drew Smyly in a matchup which looks ultra-favorable on paper. The 'Stros have won seven in a row against teams with a winning overall mark, and they're 4-0 in the past four after an odd day. In addition, Houston has won 21 of the past 29 against AL West foes, and 20 of their past 28 vs. LHP. Houston has also won 20 of Verlander's past 24 starts on the road, and 16 of his past 22 against divisional opponents. The Rangers have won four in a row at home, and they're 5-1 in the past six at Globe Life Park vs. RHP. Houston has also won 18 of their past 23 trips to Arlington, while the under has hit in four of the past five meetings in Texas. Weather Report The Diamondbacks and Cubs will square off in an afternoon battle at Wrigley, and the wind will be blowing in briskly from left field into the face of the batters at a whopping 24-27 mph. That will help 'under' bettors immensely. There is a 30 percent chance of precipitation in Baltimore for the Twins-O's matchup. If the game does get underway, the winds will be blowing out at 17-20 mph to left-center field.

In Pittsburgh, a delay is likely, as the weather forecast calls for a 50 percent or greater chance of rain through 10 p.m., lowering to 30 percent. The Giants and Bucs might have trouble getting underway. There is a 30-40 percent chance of rain for Royals-Yankees, too. If they are able to play, the winds will blow 17-20 mph from right to left. The White Sox-Tigers will deal with 40 or more percent chance of rain, and winds 19-22 mph blowing out to right field. For the Braves-Indians, they'll also faced a steady rain, and it sounds unlikely they'll get the interleague series opener in. In Texas, the Astros and Rangers will deal with winds of 10-13 mph blowing out to the right-center field power alley. Lastly, the Mets and Cardinals will also deal with breezy conditions, blowing 15-18 mph from left field to first base.

Saturday, April 20

Matt Shoemaker will take the ball for the Blue Jays, and he knows the Athletics well from his days with the Angels. He is 4-1 with a 3.79 ERA across eight starts against the A's since the start of the 2016 season, and they're hitting just .258 against him. Shoemaker is 2-1 with a 3.91 ERA in five outings at Overstock.com Coliseum, and the A's are hitting just .217 against him there with 24 strikeouts over 25 1/3 innings. If anyone gives him trouble, it would be who you expect. 1B/DH Khris Davis is 6-for-15 (.400) with two doubles and two solo homers, while OF Stephen Piscotty has two homers and seven RBI vs. Shoemaker in just nine at-bats.

The Rays will take their hacks against Red Sox SP Rick Porcello, who enters 0-3 with an 11.12 ERA and 3.00 WHIP. The struggles could continue, as Tampa Bay's current roster is a collective .287 with five doubles, a triple, two homers and 13 RBI across 150 at-bats. However, since the start of the 2016 season he is 9-6 with a 3.71 ERA with 106 strikeouts over 106 2/3 innings across 17 starts vs. Tampa Bay. That includes a 5-3 mark, 2.93 ERA and 56 strikeouts over 55 1/3 innings in nine starts at Tropicana Field.

Gerrit Cole and the Astros will look to take care of the Rangers in Arlington. You know Houston's dominance vs. Texas, but he is just 1-2 overall this season despite a 3.24 ERA, 36 strikeouts and a 0.92 WHIP. Since joining the Astros he is 2-0 with a 2.88 ERA in four starts vs. the Rangers, and they're hitting just .180 against him with nine walks and 40 strikeouts across 25 innings.

Sunday, April 21

Collin McHugh will face the Rangers in the series finale. He is humming along with a 3-1 record, 1.96 ERA and 0.83 WHIP with 27 strikeouts over 23 innings in four starts. Since the start of the 2016 season he is 2-1 with a 3.62 ERA with 26 strikeouts and just three homers over 27 1/3 innings in four starts and six relief appearances against Texas. He is also 2-1 in three starts and three relief appearances at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, but he has a dismal 5.12 ERA in those appearances. If anyone gives him trouble, it might be Elvis Andrus and Rougned Odor. Andrus is 7-for-22 (.318) against him overall, while Odor is 7-for-23 (.304) with a double, a home run and five RBI.

In a replay of the 1995 World Series, the Cleveland Indians host the Atlanta Braves at Progressive Field on Sunday Night Baseball. RHP Shane Bieber will make the start, and he has impressed to date for a team already with an embarrassment of riches in the pitching department. Bieber is 2-0 with a 1.71 ERA and 0.81 WHIP over his three starts and four appearances across 21 innings with 22 strikeouts. He enters play with three consecutive quality starts. Max Fried is also on a similar roll, posting three straight quality starts heading into play, posting a 2-0 record, 0.92 ERA and 0.86 WHIP with 12 strikeouts and just four walks over 19 2/3 innings. While the Braves entered the series 5-1 in the past six interleague games, the under is 4-1 in their past five interleague road outings vs. RHP. The under is 5-1 in Cleveland's past six interleague home games against teams with a winning record entering the series, too. The under was also 9-2-1 in the previous 12 meetings between Atlanta and Cleveland heading into Friday's series opener.

The Under is 26-6 in Kyle Freeland's 32 career starts at Coors Field. The total for today's game against the visiting Phillies is 11.

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Zach Davies, Milwaukee Brewers (2-0, 1.53 ERA, $330): If there is a weak spot on this Brewers team, most would say it?s the starting rotation, but Davies is doing his best to prove otherwise.

The veteran right-hander has been red-hot to start the season, allowing just three earned runs in his first three starts, with a WIHP of 1.30. He?ll look to keep it rolling tonight against the Dodgers, the last team he faced, where he pitched 7 innings, allowing just one run on eight hits. The Brewers are slight -105 home dogs with a total of 9.5.

SLUMPING

Chris Stratton, Los Angeles Angels (0-1, 5.54 ERA, $178):
Stratton?s first season with the Angels hasn?t gotten off on the right foot, despite the fact L.A. has won his last two starts. Stratton has battled his control all season walking 10 batters and with a WHIP of 2.00 his ERA could be worse. That has resulted in short outing as he hasn?t pitched five innings this season.

Stratton will try to bounce back when he and the Angels host the suddenly slumping Mariners Thursday night in L.A. The Haloes are currently -120 home favorites with a total of 9.5.

3 STRIKES

RAYS EARLY RISERS

We mentioned this yesterday, but the Tampa Bay Rays have produced early action in the bulk of their games to start the 2019 MLB season. Tampa Bay has scored or allowed at least one first-inning run in 14 of its first 18 games so far. The Rays have been the first to strike on the scoreboard in 11 of those contests, including plating three first inning runs in yesterday's 8-1 win over the Orioles. While opponents have had success plating a run in the opening frame in four games. Baseball bettors should take a look at first-inning props and totals for today's series finale with the O's.

Corbin takes 1-hitter into 8th, Nationals beat Giants 4-2
April 18, 2019
By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) Patrick Corbin took a one-hitter into the eighth inning in his first victory with Washington, Wilmer Difo homered and the Nationals beat the punchless San Francisco Giants 4-2 on Thursday.

Signed to a $140 million, six-year contract in December after pitching for six seasons in Arizona, Corbin started three games without a decision with his new team before throwing a gem in the deciding matchup of a three-game series.

Corbin (1-0) struck out nine, walked one and a hit a batter over 7 2/3 innings against a struggling San Francisco offense that came in with a .208 average. The lone hits against the lefty were Evan Longoria's fifth-inning double and Erik Kratz's two-out RBI double in the eighth.

After Kratz broke up the shutout, Kyle Barraclough entered and retired pinch-hitter Buster Posey. Sean Doolittle worked the ninth, giving up three hits and a run while earning his second save.

San Francisco starter Drew Pomeranz (0-2) gave up four runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings.

After the Giants went down in order to start the game, Ryan Zimmerman hit a two-out RBI double in the bottom half for a 1-0 lead. In the third, Anthony Rendon extended his career-best hitting streak to 16 games with a two-out double and scored on a double by Juan Soto. Difo hit a solo shot in the fourth, and Pomeranz was lifted after issuing a bases-loaded walk in the fifth.

DIAMONDBACKS 4, BRAVES 1

ATLANTA (AP) - Christian Walker continued his remarkable late-innings production with a two-run homer in the seventh, Luke Weaver got Arizona off to a good start and the Diamondbacks beat Atlanta to complete a three-game sweep.

Walker lined the opposite-field homer to right-center off Chad Sobotka (0-1) following a single by Adam Jones. It was Walker's sixth homer - all in the seventh inning or later. He added a double in the ninth.

Weaver (1-1) struck out nine in five scoreless innings, fanning the last five batters he faced. He allowed four hits.

The Diamondbacks have won four straight, including their first sweep of the Braves since 2016.

Arizona led 4-0 before Freddie Freeman led off the eighth with a homer against Matt Andriese.

Yoshihisa Hirano, who earned the win in the opening game of the series, gave up a one-out single to Ender Inciarte in the ninth. Hirano struck out pinch-hitter Josh Donaldson and ended the game on Ozzie Albies' flyball for his first save.

BLUE JAYS 7, TWINS 4

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Randal Grichuk, Justin Smoak and Teoscar Hernandez homered to help Toronto beat Minnesota.

Eric Sogard added a three-run double for the Blue Jays. They took three of four at Target Field.

Eddie Rosario homered twice for the Twins.

Blue Jays relievers Thomas Pannone, Ryan Tepera, Tim Mayza and Joe Biagini (1-1) combined to allow one run in 3 1-3 innings. Ken Giles earned his sixth save in seven chances with a scoreless ninth.

Michael Pineda (2-1) had his worst start of the season, allowing six earned runs and seven hits in 3 2-3 innings. He struck out one batter, threw a wild pitch and allowed two home runs to equal his combined total from his first three starts.

TIGERS 9, WHITE SOX 7

DETROIT (AP) - Nicholas Castellanos had three hits and drove in a pair of runs and Detroit beat Chicago to end a five-game losing streak.

Grayson Greiner had a career-high three hits and two RBIs for the Tigers. Miguel Cabrera, playing on his 36th birthday, also drove in a pair of runs to help Detroit set season highs for runs and hits (14).

With the score tied at 7, Greiner led off the eighth with a single and moved up when Carson Fulmer (0-1) hit both JaCoby Jones and Josh Harrison with pitches. Castellanos and Cabrera put the Tigers ahead with back-to-back sacrifice flies.

Drew VerHagen (1-0) picked up the win after recording the last out of the eighth inning. Shane Greene pitched the ninth for his ninth save in nine attempts.

ROYALS 6, YANKEES 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Homer Bailey won consecutive starts for the first time since July 2017, holding New York to three hits over six innings for Kansas City.

Jorge Soler and Ryan O'Hearn hit solo home runs off Domingo German (3-1), and the Royals won their second straight after starting the season 5-12, including 0-5 on the road.

Bailey (2-1) allowed a tying run to the Yankees on Gleyber Torres' first-inning sacrifice fly, then gave up just one more hit. Bailey, who struck out six and walked one, had not won back-to-back starts since July 4, 2017, at Colorado and five days later at Arizona.

Richard Lovelady got five outs, and former Yankee Ian Kennedy finished. New York was limited to four singles, including a pair by Clint Frazier in the fourth and ninth innings.

DODGERS 3, BREWERS 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Cody Bellinger hit his 10th home run, Max Muncy hit a two-run shot, and Julio Urias struck out a career-high nine and allowed one hit in six strong innings as Los Angeles extended its winning streak to five games with a win over Milwaukee.

Bellinger drove a 3-2 pitch from reliever Matt Albers (1-1) into the Dodgers' bullpen in right center in the sixth inning. Muncy followed with a homer that landed in the netting above the Brewers' bullpen in left.

That was all the offense Urias (1-1) needed.

Kenley Jansen pitched the ninth for his sixth save, despite Christian Yelich hitting his 10th home run.

Milwaukee starter Zach Davies allowed three hits over five innings, with three walks and two strikeouts.

ORIOLES 6, RAYS 5, 11 INNINGS

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Joey Rickard drove in the winning run in the 11th inning with an RBI double, his fourth hit of the game, to lift Baltimore over Tampa Bay.

Rickard doubled off Diego Castillo (0-1) after two-out singles by Chris Davis and Rio Ruiz kept the inning alive for Baltimore.

John Means (2-2) got the win with two innings of relief for the Orioles, who snapped a six-game losing streak against Tampa Bay. Trey Mancini had three hits and Pedro Severino homered for the Orioles.

Tommy Pham had four hits, included his third home run of the season for the Rays, but was picked off while trying to steal third base with the score tied in the ninth after Avisail Garcia homered off Mychal Givens.

The Rays lost for just the second time in their last 10 games.

ROCKIES 6, PHILLIES 2

DENVER (AP) - Ryan McMahon homered twice and had five RBIs in his return to the lineup and Kyle Freeland pitched six scoreless innings in Colorado's win over Philadelphia.

McMahon had the first multi-homer game of his career and helped the Rockies snap a five-game home losing streak. Colorado has won four in a row overall after dropping eight straight.

J.T. Realmuto hit his seventh homer, and Cesar Hernandez had three hits for Philadelphia.

McMahon had been out of the lineup since suffering a strained left elbow against the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 5. He missed 10 games, but came back strong to help Freeland get his eighth win in his last nine decisions at Coors Field.

Freeland (2-3) allowed just two hits and didn't walk a batter.

Tony Wolters had three hits and Nolan Arenado two for the Rockies.

REDS 4, PADRES 1

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Joey Votto hit his first career leadoff homer and Tucker Barnhart and Jesse Winker also connected as Cincinnati beat San Diego to snap a four-game losing streak.

Votto, 35 and in his 14th big league season, was batting leadoff for the third straight game and just the fourth time in his career. He drove rookie Chris Paddack's third pitch to right-center, his second.

Barnhart, batting ninth while starter Tanner Roark batted eighth, hit a two-run shot to right with two outs in the fifth. The homer was upheld after a video review. Winker homered off Phil Maton with one out in the ninth, his fifth.

Roark (1-0) earned his first win in his fourth start. He held the Padres to one run and four hits in 5 1/3 innings, struck out five and walked two. Raisel Iglesias struck out the side in the ninth for his third save.

Paddack (0-1) allowed three runs and three hits in six innings while striking out five and walking one in his fourth start.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

? Tampa Bay Rays have outscored opponents 22-3 in first inning.

? A?s signed DH Khris Davis to a 2-year, $33.5 contract extension.

? Kyle Freeland has made 33 career starts at Coors Field; under is 27-6.

? Mariners 11, Angels 10? Seattle blew a 10-2 lead, won in 9th inning.

? Golden St 132, Clippers 105? Warriors led 73-52 at halftime.

? St Louis 3, Winnipeg 2? Blues trailed 2-0 after second period.

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??

13) St John?s struggled with hiring a basketball coach; apparently there was an internal divide about who the school should go after. St John?s is located in Jamaica, Queens, which is part of New York City. You?d think it would be a prime job.

The basketball coach at Loyola-Chicago interviewed for the St John?s job, was offered an 8-year contract that doubled his salary, and turned it down. Not many people turn down $2M a year.

Loyola is in the Missouri Valley Conference, the 15th-rated league in America. Ramblers have been in the MVC for six years, going 27-9 the last two years, after going 27-45 in their first four years, when Wichita State was in the Valley and it was a tougher league (#10 league in 2017).

12) Porter Moser is the Loyola coach who turned St John?s down; he?s been a head coach for 15 years at three schools. Here is his breakdown:

2001-03, Ark-Little Rock: 48-34 overall, 25-19 in Sun Belt games. No trips to NCAA?s.
2004-07, Illinois State: 51-67 overall, 22-50 in MVC games, when both Creighton/Wichita were in the league. No trips to NCAA?s.
2012-present, Loyola: 141-125 overall, 6-28 in Horizon games, then 54-54 in MVC. One trip to NCAA?s.

11) 15 years as a head coach, one time in the NCAA tournament, but it was one great time, An 11-seed in 2018, Loyola made it to the Final Four, with three of their four wins in NCAA?s that year by either one or two points.

Big East was the #5 league this season, after being #2 or #3 the previous four years.

10) Then there is Iona coach Tim Cluess, who is 199-108 in nine years as coach at Iona, which is in New Rochelle. According to Mapquest, Iona/St John?s are 19.1 miles apart. Under Cluess, Iona is 124-46 in MAAC games; they?ve made the NCAA tournament the last four years and six of last eight years.

Cluess also coached D-II ball at CW Post (now LIU Post) for four years, going 98-23.

Cluess played at St John?s from 1979-81; three of his brothers also played at St John?s; he knows the NYC/New Jersey area. Not sure why St John?s didn?t hire him, but Cluess took his name out of the running Thursday.

Update: St John?s hired former UAB/Missouri/Arkansas coach Mike Anderson. His teams will play hard and play fast. He?s never had a losing season (two 16-16 seasons) and won 20+ games in 11 of 17 seasons as a head coach.

Elsewhere in the world??..
9) Chargers are going to wear their powder blue jerseys as their home uniform for the 2019 season, which is a smart decision. I?m wondering how many fans come up from San Diego to Carson for Charger home games now; they move into the Inglewood dome in 2020.

8) Tampa Bay Buccaneers might not be too happy with their 2019 schedule; they go seven weeks without playing a home game, and during those 49 days, they?ll travel a total of 20,378 miles to play in Los Angeles, New Orleans, London, Nashville and Seattle.

They play the Giants at home in Week 3, and then not again until Week 10.

7) USC has already added three grad transfers for next season, all kids who can shoot the 3; they shot 37-40-45% from the arc last year, at Akron-Columbia-San Jose State. Trojans have couple of highly-touted freshman big men coming in- they should be a lot better next season.

6) First seven games at the new ballpark in Las Vegas was 9,744, which amounts to seven sellouts. AAA Aviators are the Oakland A?s farm club.

Old ballpark was downtown, next to the Cashman Center; terrific park to watch a game. New park is in Summerlin, right near the Red Rock Hotel, roughly 14 miles from downtown.

5) LSU told athletic director Joe Alleva take a hike; not sure what this means for basketball coach Will Wade, who was suspended by Alleva but was reinstated last week.

4) Baseball injuries:
? A?s put P Marco Estrada (back) on the IL.
? Phillies put OF Odubel Herrera (hamstring) in the IL.

3) In 2015, there were 104 complete games pitched in the major leagues, only 42 last year.

2) Joey Votto popped out to the first baseman Wednesday night, for the first time in his 6,828 major league plate appearances. He still has never popped out to the catcher or the pitcher.

1) New Jersey Jets do not leave the eastern time zone at all during the 2019 season; they even have three home games in preseason, seeing how the Jets-Giants game is a Giants ?home? game.

By way of contrast, LA Rams play four games in eastern time zone, a preseason game in Hawai?i and a regular season game in London. Lot of travel for them.

Friday's Diamond Notes
Kevin Rogers

Hottest team: Rays (8-2 last 10 games)

Although Tampa Bay fell in extra innings on Thursday to Baltimore as a -250 home favorite, the Rays are coming off their sixth consecutive series victory to sit atop the AL East at 14-5. Tampa Bay erased a 5-2 deficit to force extras, but Baltimore scored a run in the top of the 11th inning to win 6-5 and prevent the Rays from their first sweep at Tropicana Field this season.

The Rays welcome in the defending champion Red Sox this weekend as Boston has slumped to a 6-13 record out of the gate. Manager Kevin Cash is going back to the bullpen-by-committee approach on Friday with right-hander Ryne Stanek making his fifth start of the season. Stanek has yet to pitch more than two innings in any of his eight appearances, while not allowing a run in four starts. In Boston?s previous trip to Tampa Bay last August, the Rays pulled off a three-game sweep, while allowing only five runs.

Coldest team: Marlins (1-9 last 10 games)

For as well as the Rays are playing, their Sunshine State counterparts are playing as bad as anyone in baseball. Granted, the talent isn?t there, but Miami has plated two runs or less in each of its last eight losses, while getting shut out in back-to-back home defeats to the Cubs this week. The Marlins own an 0-6 record in series openers, while scoring three runs in their past four Game 1?s.

The Nationals travel to Miami this weekend as Washington grabbed 13 of 19 matchups last season. The last time the Marlins won a game, Caleb Smith started against the Phillies six days ago in a 10-3 blowout. The Miami southpaw yielded one hit in six innings as the Marlins improved to 7-3 in his past 10 starts since May 2018. Smith heads to the hill on Friday opposite former Marlins? standout Anibal Sanchez, who is seeking his first win in four starts this season.

Hottest pitcher: German Marquez, Rockies (2-1, 2.00 ERA)

Colorado finally broke through the win column at Coors Field following an 0-5 start at home in Thursday?s 6-2 triumph over Philadelphia. The Rockies turn to their best pitcher of 2019 so far in Marquez, who tossed a complete-game one-hitter against the Giants his last time out in a 4-0 win. The good news for the right-hander is in three road starts he has given up one earned run, while Colorado owns a 3-0 record away from Coors. The bad news is Marquez was racked in his lone home start against the Braves by giving up five runs in five innings of a 7-1 loss. Last season when Marquez faced the Phillies at home, he shut them down by striking out 11 batters in seven scoreless innings of a 14-0 rout.

Coldest pitcher: Corey Kluber, Indians (1-2, 6.16 ERA)

Kluber is coming off three consecutive seasons of 18 or more victories, while capturing the 2017 AL Cy Young award. However, the Cleveland ace couldn?t hold onto an early 3-0 lead at Kansas City his last time out as he was racked for six runs in less than three innings of a 9-8 loss. Kluber has pitched well in two starts, but has also not pitched past the fourth inning in losses to the Royals and White Sox. The right-hander returns home to face the suddenly struggling Braves as Cleveland seeks its fourth consecutive win after sweeping Seattle on the road.

Biggest OVER run: Blue Jays (6-3 last nine)

Toronto continues its road trip as the Blue Jays are coming off their first series win of the season at Minnesota. The Jays? offense busted out by scoring 5, 6, and 7 runs in the three victories at Target Field, while plating at least four runs in seven of the past nine games. Toronto ventures to Oakland to face an Athletics? squad that was limited to three runs against the Astros in a two-game home series. Marcus Stroman is winless in four starts for Toronto, but he hasn?t been helped in the run support department as the Jays have scratched together only six runs in those four appearances.

Biggest UNDER run: Dodgers (6-0 last six)

Los Angeles allowed five or more runs 10 times in its first 15 games. The Dodgers? staff has locked down of late by giving up a total of eight runs in the past five contests, all victories. L.A. held off Milwaukee on Thursday, 3-1 as the Brewers? lone run came on a Christian Yelich solo homer in the ninth inning. The Dodgers had cashed three straight OVER tickets prior to this 6-0 run to the UNDER as Ross Stripling takes the mound on Friday at Miller Park. Stripling dominated the Brewers at Chavez Ravine last weekend by giving up four hits and one run in eight innings of a 7-1 victory to mark his second consecutive UNDER.

Matchup to watch: Astros at Rangers

Both Lone Star State squads have looked good to begin this season as they hook up for their second series this month. The Rangers captured two of three in Arlington in early April, as Texas limited Houston to only six runs in the entire series.

However, Houston has been on fire since dropping that series by winning 10 of its last 11 games. The Astros ran off 10 consecutive victories at one point, including sweeps of the Athletics, Yankees, and Mariners. Houston saw its hot streak end in Wednesday?s 2-1 setback at Oakland, but the Astros own a perfect 6-0 record in series openers this season.

Justin Verlander (2-0, 3.52 ERA) has tossed quality starts in three of four outings this season, while coming off a gem at Seattle in which he struck out 11 batters in six innings. However, the lone non-quality appearance for Verlander came at Texas on April 2 as the former Cy Young winner was knocked around for four runs in four innings of a 6-4 defeat as a hefty -220 road favorite.

Drew Smyly (0-1, 7.15 ERA) counters for the Rangers, who are fresh off a three-game home sweep of the slumping Angels. Smyly is winless in three starts, while yielding four earned runs in each of his past two outings. In his first start of the season against the Astros, the southpaw scattered four hits and allowed one run in three innings of a 2-1 setback in the series opener.

Betcha didn?t know:
Since the start of last season, the Giants have compiled a 3-10 road record when Madison Bumgarner takes the mound. San Francisco has lost each of Bumgarner?s past five starts away from Oracle Park, including defeats to Los Angeles and San Diego earlier this month. The Giants continue their road trip in Pittsburgh, as the Pirates have won four consecutive games at PNC Park.
