Santana powers Indians past Red Sox 14-9
May 29, 2019
By The Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) Carlos Santana homered and hit Cleveland's first triple of the season, Greg Allen added a pair of three-baggers and the Indians pounded out a season-high 18 hits in a 14-9 win over the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night.

Santana, who finished a single shy of the cycle, was 3 for 4 with five RBIs as Cleveland matched its season best for runs.

Jose Ramirez had two doubles and two RBIs. Allen and Kevin Plawecki also drove in two runs apiece for the Indians, who won two of three against the World Series champions in Boston.

The Indians, shut out over the first seven innings Tuesday night before rallying with seven runs over the last two for a 7-5 win, scored at least once in each of the first seven innings Wednesday.

Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr., Andrew Benintendi and Xander Bogaerts homered for Boston. The Red Sox scored three in the eighth, two on Bogaerts' 10th home run of the season, to pull to 14-9 and loaded the bases with one out in the ninth before the Indians called on Brad Hand to close it out for his 15th save.

Shane Bieber (4-2) got the win despite allowing six runs and eight hits in five innings. He struck out six.

Ryan Weber (1-1) took the loss.

ANGELS 12, ATHLETICS 7

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Gold Glove first baseman Matt Olson made a rare throwing error in the 11th inning to allow the go-ahead run to score and Los Angeles beat Oakland and sent the Athletics to their second straight loss after a 10-game winning streak.

Mike Trout was rested a day after fouling a ball off the top of his right foot.

Noe Ramirez (2-0) retired six batters to win. Cesar Puello had three hits, including his first career home run, and drove in four runs.

Puello was hit by a pitch from Lou Trivino (2-1) leading off the 11th and moved to second on a wild pitch. After Brian Goodwin walked, Luis Rengifo attempted to sacrifice both runners over. Olson attempted to field the bunt barehanded and bobbled the ball briefly before his throw to first sailed wide and into foul territory near the Angels bullpen.

Tommy LaStella singled three times and Jared Walsh had two hits and an RBI for the Angels. Shohei Ohtani singled, walked twice and scored once.

Olson, Mark Canha and Marcus Semien homered for Oakland.

PIRATES 7, REDS 2

CINCINNATI (AP) - Josh Bell tied Pittsburgh's record with his 12th homer in May, and the Pirates stopped Derek Dietrich's home run spree in beating Cincinnati for a split of the teams' four-game series.

Bell's three-run homer tied Jason Bay's mark from May 2006. His 23rd extra-base hit in May left him one shy of Paul Waner's club record for any month. He had three hits, raising his average to .345 with 18 homers overall.

Colin Moran also had a three-run shot off Anthony DeSclafani (2-3), who has given up seven homers in his last three starts.

Left-hander Steven Brault (2-1) fanned Dietrich twice during his latest shutdown performance against the Reds. Brault is 4-0 career against Cincinnati with a 1.03 ERA and a scoreless streak of 19 2/3 innings. Brault allowed three singles and struck out five in 5 1/3 innings of his third start.

YANKEES 7, PADRES 0

NEW YORK (AP) - DJ LeMahieu and Luke Voit jolted rookie Chris Paddack with instant home runs, James Paxton pitched four hitless innings in his return from the injured list and New York beat San Diego.

Gio Urshela also connected off Paddack, Gleyber Torres hit a late homer and Voit added his first big league triple as the Yankees won their eighth straight series.

San Diego didn't get a hit until the sixth when Wil Myers' blooper bounced out of LeMahieu's glove as he drifted out from second base.

Paddack (4-3) was pulled after five innings trailing 4-0.

Jonathan Holder (4-2) worked two innings and earned the win as the Yankees used five pitchers to complete the four-hitter.

NATIONALS 14, BRAVES 4

ATLANTA (AP) - Anibal Sanchez allowed one hit in six scoreless innings, Howie Kendrick hit a three-run double and Washington withstood a grand slam by rookie Austin Riley to beat Atlanta.

Sanchez (1-6) returned to Atlanta, where he thrived in 2018, to earn his first win of the season. He was perfect through 5 1/3 innings and allowed one hit and one walk with seven strikeouts.

Juan Soto and Matt Adams homered for Washington, which swept the two-game series and ended Atlanta's streak of five straight series victories. The Nationals have won five of six.

Kevin Gausman (2-4) gave up eight runs, matching his career high, on eight hits and two walks while recording only three outs.

CUBS 2, ASTROS 1

HOUSTON (AP) - Kyle Hendricks pitched eight strong innings, Kyle Schwarber homered for the second straight game and Kris Bryant added a solo shot in his return to the lineup to help Chicago avoid a sweep with a win over Houston.

The game included a scary and jarring moment when a young fan was hit by a foul line drive off the bat of Albert Almora Jr. in the fourth inning. The Astros did not provide an immediate update on the girl's condition, though a photo taken by The Associated Press appeared to show her conscious and crying as she was quickly whisked away and nearby fans looked on.

Almora, the Cubs' center fielder, and other players from both teams were visibly shaken up by the scene.

Hendricks (5-4) allowed four hits and one run with seven strikeouts for his fourth straight win. Steve Cishek worked a perfect ninth for his fifth save.

Wade Miley (5-3) worked seven innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs with nine strikeouts.

ROCKIES 5, DIAMONDBACKS 4

DENVER (AP) - Jeff Hoffman pitched five solid innings and beat out an infield single to drive in a key run as Colorado beat Arizona.

Brendan Rodgers had a two-run single and Trevor Story added three hits for the Rockies, who won their season-high fourth in a row at home and clinched a series win in the four-game set.

Carson Kelly homered and singled to drive in two runs for the Diamondbacks. Adam Jones also went deep and rookie first baseman Kevin Cron doubled twice and scored a run.

Hoffman (1-1) allowed three runs and seven hits, helping the Rockies get back to .500 at 27-27. He struck out six and walked two.

Scott Oberg got three outs for his first save.

Robbie Ray (4-2) gave up five runs - four earned - in 4 2/3 innings. He walked four and struck out six as his four-game winning streak ended.

RANGERS 8, MARINERS 7

SEATTLE (AP) - Nomar Mazara and Asdrubal Cabrera hit consecutive doubles in the ninth inning, lifting Texas over Seattle.

The Rangers capitalized on three errors and a wild pitch by relief pitchers in the sixth inning, leading to one of four lead changes. Shin-Soo Choo then hit a two-run single in the eighth to tie it at 7 in an unexpected pinch-hit appearance to set up Texas' ninth-inning rally.

Texas scored three runs in the first against Wade LeBlanc, but LeBlanc settled in and worked through the fifth inning, leaving with Seattle down 3-0.Things went very wrong when LeBlanc was replaced.

Jesse Biddle struck out the first batter he faced, but then flubbed Mazara's comebacker for one error and threw the ball away for another, allowing Mazara to reach second. Mazara got to third on a wild pitch while Biddle walked Cabrera, setting up Rougned Odor's RBI single and Ronald Guzman's sacrifice fly for a 5-4 Rangers lead. Austin Adams relieved Biddle, threw wildly to first on a pickoff attempt but evaded further damage by striking out Jeff Mathis.

Haniger rallied the Mariners again with a sixth-inning home run to make it 7-5.

The bullpen couldn't hold that lead, either. Mazara singled to lead off the eighth and Odor walked before Choo's two-run single tied it. Mazara and Cabrera doubled off Anthony Bass (0-1) for the lead, and Shawn Kelley picked up his sixth save.

MARLINS 4, GIANTS 2

MIAMI (AP) - Jorge Alfaro had a career-high four hits and Miami handed San Francisco its seventh consecutive loss.

Neil Walker had a tiebreaking, pinch-hit double in the seventh and Starlin Castro hit the first triple of the season for the Marlins, who have won nine of 12.

San Francisco's Madison Bumgarner (3-5) allowed two runs and six hits in six innings.

Brandon Belt hit his eighth home run of the season and drove in both runs for the Giants.

Marlins starter Pablo Lopez allowed four hits and one run in six innings. Nick Anderson (2-2) pitched a scoreless seventh while Sergio Romo escaped the ninth for his 11th save in 12 chances.

TIGERS 4, ORIOLES 2

BALTIMORE (AP) - Brandon Dixon hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the ninth inning to lead Detroit past Baltimore.

The Tigers took two of the three games and won their first road series since April 1-3 against the Yankees.

Orioles reliever Mychal Givens allowed a solo homer to John Hicks that tied the game 2-2 in the eighth.

Nicholas Castellanos walked to lead off the ninth and Dixon followed with a two-run shot off Branden Kline (1-2).

Nick Ramirez (1-0) didn't allow a hit over three innings of relief. Shane Greene gave up a two-out double to Stevie Wilkerson in the ninth but still picked up his 18th save.

Keon Broxton got his second homer for Baltimore.

Rookie left-hander John Means allowed one run and three hits with a season-high seven strikeouts and no walks over six innings for the Orioles, who have lost 13 of 16.

RAYS 4, BLUE JAYS 3, 11 INNINGS

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Willy Adames delivered a long single against a five-man infield in the 11th inning, driving in the winning run as Tampa Bay beat Toronto.

Adames' hit came off Justin Shafrer (0-1), who walked two and allowed a single by Avisail Garcia. With one out and the infield jammed with fielders, Adames drove a ball to deep center field.

Diego Castillo (1-3) got the win after pitching the 11th for the Rays, who have won five straight.

Tampa Bay banged out 14 hits; Garcia and Tommy Pham each had three.

The Blue Jays have lost seven of eight. Toronto had 12 hits, but went 2 for 16 with men in scoring position. Toronto had had four hits off Blake Snell's first 10 pitches of the game, including a two-run homer by Lourdes Gurriel Jr.

The game drew a crowd of 6,166, 380 more than Tuesday night's crowd of 5,786, the smallest in franchise history.

WHITE SOX 8, ROYALS 7

CHICAGO (AP) - Six innings after being beaned with a pitch from Kansas City starter Glenn Sparkman, Tim Anderson doubled in the go-ahead run in the eighth, lifting Chicago over Kansas City.

Jose Abreu hit a three-run homer, Yoan Moncada also connected and the White Sox swept a three-game series for the first time this season.

Jorge Soler homered and drove in three runs for Kansas City.

Kelvin Herrera (2-3) got the win despite giving up two runs and Alex Colome got the final three outs for his 11th save.

Ian Kennedy (0-2) took the loss.

PHILLIES 11, CARDINALS 4

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Bryce Harper hit his 10th homer, his 200th career double and drove in four before fouling a ball off his foot and exiting in the fifth inning, and Philadelphia beat St. Louis.

The hot-hitting Harper drove a two-run homer in the third and followed an inning later with a two-run hustle double. He had three hits when he left the game with the Phillies ahead by 10 runs.

Aaron Nola (6-0) struck out eight over seven innings. Scott Kingery and Maikel Franco hit back-to-back homers in the fifth, and Andrew McCutchen hit a two-run shot two batters later to blow the game open.

Matt Weiters homered for St. Louis. Genesis Cabrera took the loss, working 3 2/3 innings, allowing five hits, five runs (three earned) and two walks while striking out five.

Thursday?s 6-pack

Matchups for the Gavitt Games this fall:

? Villanova at Ohio State

? Michigan State at Seton Hall

? Creighton at Michigan

? Purdue at Marquette

? Providence at Northwestern

? Penn State at Georgetown

? Minnesota at Butler

? DePaul at Iowa

Quote of the Day

?Courage is not the absence of fear, but the capacity to act despite our fears.?
John McCain

Thursday?s quiz
Which state is known as the Granite State?

Wednesday?s quiz
Doug Williams, Mark Rypien, Joe Theismann won Super Bowls playing for Joe Gibbs.

Tuesday?s quiz
Jacob deGrom is a really good pitcher, but the Mets are 16-25 in his last 41 starts.

*****************************

Thursday?s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud??

13) One important thing in baseball now is for your starting pitchers to go deeper into games, to take stress off your bullpen. Over the course of a 162-game schedule, you can wear out your bullpen if they get used too much? after all, the starting pitchers are the better pitchers.

So far this season, Angels have only had 10 games where their starter went 6+ innings, but they use the opener a decent amount. John Means lasted six innings Wednesday; it was only the 11th game that Baltimore?s starters lasted 6+ innings

12) Pirates 7, Reds 2? These teams don?t like each other; since 2014, 72 Pirates have been hit by Cincinnati pitchers, 64 Reds have been hit by Pittsburgh hurlers. Six players were hit in the 5-4 Pirates? win Wednesday.

Eugenio Suarez got drilled on the hand in 8th inning; x-rays came back negative, but Suarez had some words for pitcher Clay Holmes on his way to first base.

11) Cubs starting pitchers gave up 6+ runs four games in a row Saturday-Tuesday, first time they?ve done that since August of 2006.

10) Foul poles at Safeco Field in Seattle are 92 feet high. In case you were wondering.

9) Toronto will host a college basketball tripleheader Nov 16;
? Tennessee-Washington
? Buffalo-Harvard
? Rutgers-St Bonaventure

8) College basketball transfer portal:
? Coppin State transfer Justin Steers bolts to Rider.

7) Baseball stuff:
? Astros put SS Carlos Correa (broken rib) on IL.

6) Houston now has Altuve, Springer, Correa, Diaz all on the IL. Tough times for their training staff. Correa got hurt during a home massage; he broke a rib getting massaged.

5) Top five starting pitchers, if you bet on all their starts:
1. Lucas Giolito CWS (8-2) +$855
2. Clayton Kershaw LA (8-0) +$800
3. Jordan Lyles Pitt (8-2) +$777
4. Matt Shoemaker Tor (5-0) +$673
5. Jose Berrios Minn (9-2) +$671

4) Seven of Notre Dame?s football opponents this fall have a bye week the week before they play the Fighting Irish, first time that has happened to anyone in the last 30 years.

3) Former Bengals? coach Marvin Lewis has joined Arizona State?s football staff as a special advisor to head coach Herm Edwards. Too bad; Lewis was good on TV doing AAF games and would?ve been a solid TV analyst for NFL games.

2) Blue Jays? CF Jonathan Davis made one of the best catches you?ll ever see to end the first inning in Tampa Bay last night- it saved two runs, cost Avisail Garcia two RBI.

1) Random thing I learned today: singer Ariana Grande is allergic to tomatoes- she cancelled two shows after having an allergic reaction this week. No pizza for her.

LEADING OFF: Netting under scrutiny again, Red Sox vs Yanks
May 29, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Thursday:

INJURED FAN

Protective netting at ballparks is again under scrutiny after a young girl was struck in Houston by a foul ball. Albert Almora Jr. of the Chicago Cubs hit a line drive into the stands down the third base line and almost immediately put his hands on his head in horror. The girl who got hit was picked up by a man who appeared to be with her, and he dashed up the stairs not long after she was struck. The Astros said the fan was taken to a hospital, but did not disclose any further details. A photo taken by The Associated Press showed the girl apparently conscious and crying as she was whisked away and nearby fans looked on.

Like all major league stadiums, Minute Maid Park has netting to protect fans near the field from foul balls. On the third base side in Houston, it extends to the end of the visiting team's dugout. The girl was sitting in what looked to be the third or fourth row about 10 feet past where the netting ends. Following recommendations from Major League Baseball, by the start of the 2018 season all 30 teams had expanded their protective netting to at least the far ends of the dugouts after several fans were injured by foul balls in 2017.

EAST TO WEST

Japanese stars Shohei Ohtani and Yusei Kikuchi are set to square off for the first time in the major leagues when the Mariners host the Angels. Ohtani and Kikuchi attended the same high school, though at different times, and they only faced each other twice in Japan. Kikuchi, Seattle's rookie left-hander, struck out Ohtani twice in two at-bats in 2013, and Ohtani got two hits and whiffed once against Kikuchi during a game in 2017. First pitch in Seattle is set for 11:10 a.m. Tokyo time.

OLD RIVALS

The first-place New York Yankees have won eight straight series heading into a four-game set against AL East rival Boston. Chris Sale (1-6, 4.19 ERA) pitches the opener for the Red Sox, who make their second visit to Yankee Stadium this season after dropping both games in mid-April. New York left-hander J.A. Happ (4-3, 5.09) is 8-4 against the Red Sox in the regular season.

OUCH!

The banged-up Houston Astros get a day off to rest after their latest injury. Already missing fellow stars Jose Altuve and George Springer, the AL West leaders expect to be without shortstop Carlos Correa for four to six weeks after he says he fractured a rib during a massage at home. ''To sustain an injury in such an unusual way makes it even more frustrating,'' the 2015 AL Rookie of the Year said in a statement issued through the team. Altuve is out indefinitely after experiencing fatigue and soreness in his surgically repaired right leg. Utility infielder Aledmys Diaz, catcher Max Stassi and right-hander Collin McHugh are also on the injured list.

NOT-SO-HOT TICKET

The Rays begin a four-game series against major league-leading Minnesota, and Tampa Bay is hoping fans actually show up to watch. Tropicana Field hosted a franchise record-low crowd of 5,786 on Tuesday, then drew 6,166 on Wednesday against Toronto. Attendance has been an issue for years, but the numbers are especially jarring with Tampa Bay among the majors' best teams. Rays President Brian Auld issued a statement Wednesday, saying ''we appreciate the support of our fans, and we believe that St. Petersburg, Tampa and the entire Tampa Bay region will rally around this exciting and compelling Rays team.''

Best Western

The Angels and Mariners kick off a four-game series at T-Mobile Park (formerly Safeco Field), and the Mariners are hoping that their pitching will be a little better. In the final two games of the series against the Texas Rangers they allowed 19 runs for a pair of 'over' results. The Halos know all about over results, cashing in four consecutive games overall, as well as four straight on the road. In the most recent four-game set in Anaheim on April 18-21, the over connected in three of the four games. However, in the earlier two-game mini series in Seattle, the under was 2-0.

This game features a battle of two left-handers, as Tyler Skaggs toes the slab for the Angels, and rookie LHP Yusei Kikuchi takes the ball for the Mariners. On a side note, this will also be the first meeting in the United States between Kikuchi and Shohei Ohtani. The two attended the same high school back in Japan. Kikuchi will make a traditional start, too, as he has had an opener every fifth starter as the team looks to manage his workload.

The over is 4-0 in the past four inside the division for the Angels. However, the under is an impressive 8-1-2 in the past 11 starts for Skaggs, including 5-1 in his past six on the road against teams with a losing record. The under is 3-1-2 in his past six starts on the road overall. For the Mariners, the over is 4-1 in the past five at home, and 10-2 in the past 12 at home vs. LHP. In addition, the over is 13-4 in the past 17 overall vs. LHP. For Kikuchi, the over is 4-0-1 in the past five home outings, and 9-1-1 in his past 11 starts overall. The over is 5-0 in Skaggs' past five against the Mariners, and 4-0 in his past four in Seattle. However, the under is 4-1 in the past five meetings overall in Seattle.

Looking Ahead

Thursday, May 30

It's a lefty on lefty matchup for the Red Sox and Yankees, as LHP Chris Sale and LHP JA Happ lock horns. The under is 3-0-1 in Boston's past four on the road, and 4-1-1 in their ;ast six on the road vs. LHP. In addition, the under is an impressive 8-0 in the past eight against teams with a winning overall mark. The under has also hit in five of Sale's past six outings as he has rounded into form after a rough start. For the Yankees, the under is 7-1-1 in the past nine games at home, including 6-1-1 in the past eight at home vs. LHP. The under is 4-1-1 in the past six against winning teams, too, but the over is 7-2-2 in their past 11 overall. The over is also 9-4-1 in Happ's past 14 starts overall.

The Indians travel to meet the White Sox in the Windy City, and the over has cashed in four straight for the Tribe, and four in a row on the road, too. The under has dominated in starts by RHP Carlos Carrasco, however, going 7-1 in his past eight starts when working on four days of rest. The under is also 7-2 in his past nine outings against the White Sox, while going 8-3-1 in the past 12 meetings between these teams overall in Chicago. The under is 4-1 in Chicago's past five at home, 4-1 in the past five inside the division and 4-1 in the past five vs. RHP, too.

Wind Report
The wind won't play a factor in any of the games on Thursday, with the forecast calling for winds of 9 mph or less. The only trouble spot overall will be in the Bronx, as the Red Sox-Yankees game is threatened by a 70 percent or greater chance of rain.

Friday, May 31

The over has dominated for the Cubs recently, while it's all about the under for the Cardinals lately.

The over is 7-1 in Chicago's past eight overall, and 4-1 in their past five games inside the NL Central. The over is also 6-0 in their past six vs. RHP, while going 20-8 in the past 28 on the road against righties. The over is 4-1 in Yu Darvish's past five, too, while hitting in four of their past five on the road when he starts. The under is 4-1 in the past five for the Cardiinals, 4-1 in their past five vs. RHP and 5-0 in the past five outings by Miles Mikolas. The under is also a perfect 5-0 in his past five outings overall. The under is 4-0 in the previous four meetings in St. Louis, too.

Astros RHP Brad Peacock and Athletics RHP Mike Fiers tangle in Oakland on Friday night. The under is 2-0-2 in Peacock's past four outings overall, while going 8-3 in his past 11 inside the division. The under is also 7-3-1 in his previous 11 starts when working on five days of rest. For the A's, the over is a perfect 4-0 in his past four starts against AL West clubs while going 6-2 in his past eight games overall. In this series, the over is 11-4-1 in the past 16 meetings in Oakland, and 18-8-2 in the past 28 meetings overall in this series.

It's a battle of lefties in San Diego, as the Marlins use LHP Caleb Smith against LHP Joey Lucchesi of the Padres. The under is 4-0-1 in Miami's past five vs. LHP, and the under is 4-1 in his past five outings against winning teams. However, the over is 7-2 in his past nine starts on the road, and 4-0 in his past four when working on four days of rest. The under is 5-2 in Lucchesi's past seven home outings, and 5-1 in his past six at home against teams with a losing overall mark. However, the over is 4-0-1 in the past five following a day off, and 4-1 in Lucchesi's past five starts overall.

Wind Report
The wind will be blowing out to the left-center field power alley at SunTrust Park for the Tigers-Braves interleague series battle. The Indians and White Sox continue their series, and the winds will be blowing out steadily at 10 mph to left field. Those are the only weather trouble spots, as precipitation is not in the forecast at any of the venues, and the winds are 9 mph or less at all other parks.

STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Hyun-Jin Ryu, Los Angeles Dodgers (7-1, 1.65 ERA, $350):
There is no hotter pitcher in baseball than Ryu. He had a ?rough? outing last time out and his ERA and WHIP over his last three starts are both 0.86. The South Korean southpaw is also limiting opponents to a .223 on base percentage. Heck, he has allowed just four walks all season. Ryu will look to keep it rolling when he and the Dodgers host the Mets tonight. Los Angeles is currently a big -270 favorite with a total of 8.5.

SLUMPING

Kyle Freeland, Colorado Rockies (2-6, 6.71 ERA, $-279):
It?s been tough to watch Freeland on the mound this season a year after he looked like one of the best pitchers in the NL. It?s been tough all season long for the lefty, but the last three starts have been particularly bad. He?s been roughed up to the tune of a 10. 03 ERA and a 2.23 WHIP while surrendering a .426 on base percentage. Freeland will look to get back on track when the Rockies host the Diamondbacks tonight.

3 STRIKES

HOME RUN HAPP

One of our favorite whipping boys takes the mound as one of sports? greatest rivalries resumes tonight as J.A. Happ and the Yankees host the Red Sox. Happ?s first full season in pinstripes hasn?t gone as exactly to plan thanks to a 5.09 ERA, but his problem has been mostly keeping the ball in the park. The lefty has already surrendered 14 home runs in his 11 starts this season, including five in his past three starts. A guy like J.D. Martinez is +340 to hit a home run tonight.

ONE-SIDED RIVALRY

Carlos Carrasco has dominated the White Sox over the past three seasons. The Indians? right-hander is 7-1 with a 1.08 ERA and a 0.69 WHIP in 10 games against the division rival Pale Hose over that stretch. That includes 12 innings of right-hit shutout ball this season. It?s no surprise Cleveland is a healthy -198 road favorite for tonight?s matchup, so maybe consider the Tribe on the runline at a much more reasonable -120.

Giants snap 7-game losing streak with 3-1 win over Marlins
May 30, 2019
By The Associated Press

MIAMI (AP) Brandon Crawford hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the eighth inning, and the San Francisco Giants broke a seven-game losing streak by rallying past the Miami Marlins 3-1 Thursday.

San Francisco's Tyler Beede, recalled before the game from Triple-A Sacramento, allowed one run in six innings to lower his ERA in four appearances to 7.82. Three relievers completed a seven-hitter.

The Giants averted a series sweep against the team with the National League's worst record, and won with six hits. They trailed 1-0 in the seventh when Crawford doubled and scored on a single by Mike Yastrzemski, who earned his first career RBI.

With the score 1-all, Adam Conley (1-5) walked pinch hitter Buster Posey in the eighth. Brandon Belt followed with a broken-bat single, and Evan Longoria walked to load the bases. Crawford greeted Wei-Yin Chen with a ground-rule double for a 3-1 lead.

Reyes Moronta (2-4) worked a scoreless seventh. Will Smith pitched a perfect ninth for his 13th save.

Sandy Alcantara pitched six innings, singled home the Marlins' lone run and worked around two hits, five walks and a hit batsman.

CARDINALS 5, PHILLIES 3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Dakota Hudson tossed six effective innings, Jedd Gyorko hit a two-run homer and St. Louis beat Philadelphia.

Marcell Ozuna, Matt Wieters and Matt Carpenter also went deep for the Cardinals, who avoided their first sweep against Philadelphia since 2006.

Hudson (4-3) allowed four hits and one run in his fourth straight quality start. Jordan Hicks got the last three outs for his 11th save in 12 tries after three relievers worked two innings.

Phillies starter Jerad Eickhoff (2-3) gave up four runs and eight hits in 6 1/3 innings. Bryce Harper and Rhys Hoskins had RBI hits and Cesar Hernandez added an RBI fielder's choice grounder for Philadelphia.

ROCKIES 11, DIAMONDBACKS 10, 10 INNINGS

DENVER (AP) - Daniel Murphy hit an RBI single in the 10th inning to lead Colorado to a victory over Arizona.

The Rockies swept the four-game series and extended their winning streak to five games. Colorado's last four wins at home have come on walk-offs by different players.

Trevor Story reached on a one-out double off Yoshihisa Hirano (0-2) and moved to third on a groundout by David Dahl. Arizona intentionally walked Nolan Arenado, and Murphy lined a single to left that scored Story.

Murphy finished with three hits and three RBIs, and Story had a career-high four hits. Ian Desmond also homered. Seunghwan Oh (3-1) pitched the top of the 10th and got the win.

Eduardo Escobar, Christian Walker and pitcher Taylor Clarke hit home runs for Arizona, which failed to hold the late lead and dropped its fourth straight.

RAYS 14, TWINS 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Austin Meadows drove in four runs to back the pitching of Charlie Morton, who remained unbeaten, as Tampa Bay beat major league-leading Minnesota.

Meadows delivered a three-run double in a six-run third inning against starter Martin Perez (7-2). He also singled home a run in the fourth, when the Rays scored five more times to make it 11-0.

Tampa Bay's winning streak is its longest since the team won eight straight in August last year.

Morton (6-0) limited the Twins to two hits before Luis Arraez doubled and scored on Ehire Adrianza's two-out single in the fifth.

Brandon Lowe had three RBIs, Ji-Man Choi hit a two-run homer and Christian Arroyo, Willy Adames, Travis d'Arnaud and Avisail Garcia also drove in runs for the Rays.

Perez allowed a season-high six runs and six hits over 2 2/3 innings for the Twins.

BREWERS 11, PIRATES 5

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Mike Moustakas had two homers among his four hits and Milwaukee beat Pittsburgh.

Yasmani Grandal also homered and had four hits to help the Brewers win for the third time in four games.

Moustakas hit a two-run shot in the first inning, and his solo shot in the third extended Milwaukee's lead to 4-1.

Grandal followed Moustokas' second homer with a solo shot to back Chase Anderson (3-0), who gave up two runs and six hits with five strikeouts in five innings.

Colin Moran homered in the fourth for Pittsburgh. Josh Bell pushed his hitting streak to 10 games.

Joe Musgrove (3-6) allowed five runs and 11 hits in six innings.

ROYALS 4, RANGERS 2

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Jorge Soler and Adalberto Mondesi homered and Jakob Junis allowed two runs in six innings as Kansas City snapped a three-game losing streak with a win over Texas.

Junis (4-5) allowed four hits, including homers by Shin-Soo Choo and Nomar Mazara, and two walks for his first win since May 1. The victory follows three losses and a no-decision.

Ian Kennedy worked a perfect ninth inning for his third save, and the first for Kansas City since May 1.

The Royals improved to 8-20 away from Kauffman Stadium, but still have the worst road record in the majors.

Mike Minor (5-4) allowed three runs on seven hits in five-plus innings.

WHITE SOX 10, INDIANS 4

CHICAGO (AP) - Yonder Alonso and Jose Abreu each hit a two-run homer, and Chicago beat Cleveland for its season-high fourth straight victory.

Alonso also doubled and scored against his former team, helping Chicago move within one game of Cleveland for second place in the AL Central. Eloy Jimenez had three hits and two RBIs, and Manny Banuelos (3-4) pitched 5 1/3 innings of three-run ball for his first win in a month.

Carlos Carrasco (4-6) matched a season high by allowing six runs and 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings of his third consecutive loss.

Jordan Luplow went deep for Cleveland, and Carlos Santana drove in two runs in the opener of a four-game series.

ANGELS 9, MARINERS 3

DODGERS 2, METS 0

? Wilt Chamberlain (Apr. 14, 1967)

? Walt Frazier (Apr. 26, 1972)

? Dave Cowens (May 23, 1976)

? Magic Johnson (June 2, 1991)

? Jason Kidd (June 5, 2002

? LeBron James (June 6, 2013)

Quotes of the Day
Part 1
?I?m extremely disappointed about not being on the field with my teammates. I sustained the rib fracture during a massage at my home on Tuesday. To sustain an injury in such an unusual way makes it even more frustrating. However, I will work hard to get back on the field as quickly as possible to help our team achieve our goal of winning another championship.?
Carlos Correa, who needs a new masseuse

Part 2
?Are you f?-ing blind?!?!?!?
Female fan at the Oakland Coliseum Wednesday, yelling at the home plate ump after a called strike. Her voice was captured by the field mike.

Friday?s quiz
Which NBA head coach was born in Lebanon?

Thursday?s quiz

Friday?s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??.

13) Oh Canada is one of my favorite songs; when I got married many, many years ago, we had to pay the organist $75, whether she played at the wedding or not. This was 1992, $75 was a decent payday. The $75 annoyed me a great deal; it really irritated me. I don?t even think the priest got $75. Organists must have a good union.

Anyway, we?re sitting there on the altar after Communion and the organist is earning her $75 and all of a sudden, I?m hearing her play Oh Canada, and there are murmurs in the church. I had no idea this was going to happen. Murmurs turned to laughter. She played it well.

The marriage didn?t go very well, but that was definitely the highlight of the wedding. Got a text reminding me of that during that national anthem in Toronto last night. Still makes me laugh.

12) Raptors 118, Warriors 109? Siakam shot 14-17 from floor, scored 32 points with five assists for Raptors. Green/Bell/Iguodala shot combined 6-18 from floor as Toronto takes 1-0 series lead on its home floor.

Dell Curry played the last three years of his 16-year career for Toronto, so of course Drake shows up for this game wearing a Dell Curry Raptors? jersey.

12) Weird stat of the day from The Sporting News: This is the 36th consecutive NBA Finals series with at least one former teammate of Shaquille O?Neal. Danny Green and Shaq were teammates on the Cavaliers nine years ago.

10) Back in January, when the St Louis Blues were floundering near the bottom of the NHL, a courageous bettor wagered $400 on the Blues (250-1) to win the Stanley Cup. He is three wins away from a big payday. Notable that he didn?t hedge his bet before the finals to guarantee a profit. Finals series is tied, 1-1.

9) You can?t make this stuff up: A Jacksonville couple was arrested this week on charges of animal cruelty after a police officer rescued a pig from the couple?s steaming hot Lexus that was parked in a mall parking lot. Temperatures were in the high 90?s at the time.

I mean, not only do you have a pig in a car, but you have a damn Lexus. Why?

8) All-time record for home runs in a month:
? 1,119 in August 2017
? 1,101 in June 2017

So far this May, entering Thursday?s games, there have been 1,069 homers hit.

7) Baseball stuff:
? Detroit optioned OF Victor Reyes back to AAA.
? Red Sox put P Hector Velasquez (back) on the IL.
? Cincinnati optioned P Lucas Sims back to AAA.
? Marlins optioned P Elieser Hernandez back to AAA.

Jake Odorizzi?s last six starts for Minnesota:
? 35.2 IP, allowed 3 runs, 39 baserunners, Twins won all six games.

6) Cleveland Indians didn?t hit a triple in their first 54 games; they hit three of them Wednesday, in their 55th game.

5) MLB Network couldn?t wait to show Boston-New York games Thursday/Friday, but horrible weather postponed Thursday?s game in the Bronx- it?ll be made up August 3rd as part of a doubleheader. I?m guessing that twinbill will be on national TV.

National TV outlets should try showing more Astros? games; they have a dome. No rainouts.

4) This didn?t sound right when I heard it, but apparently, Los Angeles County has more voters than 42 of the other 49 states; they have voters who speak 13 different languages.

3) Lakers-Nets are playing two preseason games in China in October.

2) College basketball transfer portal:
? South Carolina poached 6-9 Micaiah Henry from Tennessee Tech.
? Brad Calipari (John?s son) entered the transfer portal; guess he wants playing time.
? KJ Lawson bolts from Kansas to Tulane; another guy who wants to play.

1) In case you were wondering, people in Finland prefer silence to casual conversation.

Schools and tutors in Finland are now offering courses in casual conversation; ?It does not come naturally to Finns.? Some Finns have begun to take lessons, in classrooms or even from private tutors, so they can make conversation in their international business dealings.

Says one Finnish small talk tutor: ?Lower your standards; not every conversation you have has to be clever. You can comment on food, any music that is playing, even the weather.?

Who knew that could be a job? Go figure.

LEADING OFF: Rays on a roll, Cubs vs Cards, Red Sox at Yanks
May 30, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Friday:

ON A ROLL

Austin Meadows and the Rays have won six games in a row heading into another matchup with major league-leading Minnesota. Meadows drove in four runs Thursday night in a 14-3 rout of the Twins. The young outfielder has multiple hits in five consecutive games, not to mention three doubles, three homers and 11 RBIs during Tampa Bay's longest winning streak since taking eight straight in August last year. Minnesota right-hander Jose Berrios (7-2, 3.20 ERA) attempts to slow the Rays after allowing 13 runs (11 earned) and 29 hits over his last three outings.

ARCH ENEMIES

The Cubs and Cardinals renew their rivalry in St. Louis, with Yu Darvish (2-3, 5.40 ERA) set to pitch the series opener for first-place Chicago against 2018 All-Star Miles Mikolas (4-5, 4.76). Darvish gave up 12 hits and six runs in a season-high seven innings of an 8-6 win against Cincinnati last time out. Mikolas is 3-0 with a 1.32 ERA in six career appearances, four starts, versus the Cubs. The NL Central foes are set to play at London next season in a two-game series at West Ham's Olympic Stadium on June 13 and 14.

TWO AT THE TOP

It's a matchup of National League division leaders at Dodger Stadium when Jake Arrieta (5-4, 3.60 ERA) pitches the opener of a three-game series for Philadelphia. The 2015 NL Cy Young Award winner is 3-3 with a 3.07 ERA in seven career starts against Los Angeles. Kenta Maeda (6-2, 3.67) is up for the Dodgers.

TRY AGAIN

Beautiful weather is finally forecast for New York, where the first-place Yankees host longtime rival Boston after their scheduled series opener was rained out Thursday night. J.A. Happ (4-3, 5.09 ERA) and Red Sox lefty Chris Sale (1-6, 4.19) were both pushed back a day, and the game will be made up as part of a day-night doubleheader on Aug. 3. New York (36-19) has a half-game lead in the AL East over Tampa Bay. The defending champion Red Sox are 7+ games behind the Yankees at 29-27.

WALK IT OFF

Say one thing for the streaking Rockies, they're certainly giving their fans some fantastic finishes lately. Colorado has won five straight overall, and its past four wins at home have come on walk-offs by different players. Daniel Murphy did the honors Thursday with an RBI single in the 10th inning that gave the Rockies an 11-10 victory and a four-game sweep of NL West rival Arizona. ''It's been really remarkable. It's been a testament to this team,'' Murphy said. ''It's as resilient a group I've ever been a part of.'' Colorado slugger Nolan Arenado is 12 for 27 with four home runs in the last week and is riding a 10-game hitting streak. Up next, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. takes his first swings at Coors Field when the Toronto Blue Jays make an interleague visit.

MAY DAY

Cleveland right-hander Trevor Bauer looks to close out a difficult May on a high note when he pitches against the White Sox. Bauer, who went 12-6 with a career-low 2.21 ERA last year, is 0-3 with a 6.52 ERA in his last five starts. He struck out eight in six innings against Tampa Bay on Sunday, but also threw a wild pitch and hit two batters while allowing three earned runs in the Indians' 6-3 loss. Dylan Covey pitches for Chicago. The 27-year-old right-hander is 0-3 with a 5.75 ERA in his past four starts.
