Friday's Diamond Notes
Kevin Rogers

Hottest team: Rays (8-1 last nine)

Tampa Bay continues to roll since getting shut down by Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers in a 7-3 loss on May 21. The Rays have lost only once since while capturing series wins over the Indians and Blue Jays. Tampa Bay made a bold statement against AL Central-leading Minnesota in Thursday?s 14-3 rout of Twins to improve to 35-19 on the season. The Rays reached double-digit runs for the fourth time this season, while not allowing more than three runs for the ninth consecutive game.

Tampa Bay continues its series with Minnesota on Friday night at Tropicana Field as reliever Ryne Stanek takes the mound in another bullpen-by-committee production for the Rays. Tampa Bay has won seven of eight home starts made by Stanek this season, although he has not pitched more than two innings in any of those outings. The Rays enter this contest owning a solid 8-2 mark in Game 2?s of a series at the Trop this season.

Coldest team: Blue Jays (1-7 last eight)

All of the focus in Toronto is on the Raptors after capturing Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Thursday. The Blue Jays haven?t been as fortunate of late by picking up only seven victories in May with none of those coming in consecutive games. Toronto was swept at Tampa Bay earlier this week, while plating only seven runs in the series and suffering its third road sweep of the season.

The Jays travel to Colorado for a weekend interleague set with the suddenly-hot Rockies, who are coming off a four-game sweep of Arizona. Toronto sends out the ageless wonder in Edwin Jackson to the hill in the series opener as the right-hander is winless in three starts since joining the Jays, while allowing 13 runs in his past two outings. Toronto has won five road series openers in 2019, as the Jays are 1-1 this season when listed as an away underdog of +200 or higher.

Hottest pitcher: Patrick Corbin, Nationals (5-2, 2.85 ERA)

All of the sudden, Washington is starting to look like a winning baseball team. Albeit, it?s a two-game winning streak, but the Nationals have won five of six contests and dropped 14 runs on the Braves in Wednesday?s blowout at SunTrust Park. Corbin is fresh off his best start as a National by tossing a complete game shutout in a 5-0 victory over Miami last Saturday, while compiling his ninth quality start in 11 outings. Corbin faces the Reds in the series opener as the Nationals try to improve on a 4-14 record in Game 1?s of a series, including a dreadful 1-9 mark off a win.

Coldest pitcher: Chris Archer, Pirates (1-5, 5.75 ERA)

Pittsburgh has been a solid road team this season at 17-13, but the Pirates have stumbled at PNC Park by losing seven of their last eight home contests. The Pirates fell behind early 5-1 in Thursday?s 11-5 setback to the Brewers to drop to 3-8 in the last 11 games overall. Archer has struggled this season by owning a 1-5 record and 5.75 ERA, while the Bucs are 0-6 in the right-hander?s last six appearances. Archer hasn?t lasted past the fifth inning in five straight starts, while losing two outings to the Brewers last season as he faces Milwaukee on Friday.

Biggest OVER run: Dodgers (9-1 last 10)

Los Angeles had its nine-game OVER streak snapped in Thursday?s 2-0 shutout of the Mets. Prior to that low-scoring output, the Dodgers scored seven runs or more in each of their seven victories, including nine runs each in the first two wins of their series against New York. The Dodgers welcome in the Phillies in a battle of division leaders at Chavez Ravine as Kenta Maeda has seen the UNDER cash in three consecutive home starts. The Phillies are currently on a 5-2 run to the OVER away from Citizens Bank Park.

Biggest UNDER run: Tigers (5-1-1 last seven)

Detroit is fresh off a rare series victory by taking two of three at Baltimore. The Tigers rode strong pitching in the two wins by allowing two runs, although Detroit failed to score more than four runs in any game of that series. Detroit?s offense isn?t shattering any records anytime soon as the Tigers have been held to four runs or less in 14 of the past 15 games. The Tigers head to Atlanta for an interleague set with the Braves as former University of Alabama standout Spencer Turnbull takes the mound. Turnbull has drilled the UNDER in all five of his starts away from Comerica Park this season.

Matchup to watch: Cubs vs. Cardinals

The race for the top spot in the NL Central continues to heat up as the Cubs and Brewers each own 31 victories. Chicago holds a one-game edge over Milwaukee heading into the weekend as the Cubs travel to St. Louis for the first time this season. The Cubs pulled off a three-game sweep of the Redbirds at Wrigley Field in early May, while scoring 23 runs in the series.

Chicago hasn?t been sharp lately by losing five of its past seven games, but avoided a sweep at Houston in Wednesday?s 2-1 triumph over the Astros. Yu Darvish takes the ball in the series opener at Busch Stadium as the right-hander has not figured in a decision in his last five starts. However, the Cubs have won four of his past six outings, including a 6-5 victory over the Cardinals on May 4 in spite of Darvish allowing five runs in four innings.

The Cardinals have lost 14 of their past 20 contests, but grabbed a getaway day win over the Phillies on Thursday, 5-3. St. Louis has not won back-to-back games since April 30 and May 1 at Washington, while losing seven in a row off a victory. Miles Mikolas has dropped three consecutive starts for St. Louis after the Cardinals won six of his first eight outings of 2019. Mikolas didn?t face the Cubs at Wrigley earlier this month, as the righty is riding a five-start UNDER streak, while tossing seven innings in three of his past four trips to the hill.

Betcha didn?t know:
The Yankees and Red Sox hook up tonight in the Bronx. You probably knew that, but it is Game 1 of their series after last night?s contest was wiped off due to impending storms in the area. Boston and New York have gone in different directions in series openers this season with the Red Sox owning a 6-12 mark, while the Yankees are 14-4 in Game 1?s. However, Boston has won five consecutive games when coming off back-to-back losses.

Surging Yankees top Red Sox, Sale 4-1
May 31, 2019
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) DJ LeMahieu homered and hit an RBI double off the wall against Chris Sale, sending the surging New York Yankees to a 4-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Friday night.

Aaron Hicks broke a third-inning tie with a two-run single, and J.A. Happ (5-3) pitched well against Boston again to win his fourth consecutive decision overall. New York got four shutout innings from its deep and dominant bullpen, handing the defending World Series champions their third loss in a row. Adam Ottavino, Tommy Kahnle, Zack Britton and Aroldis Chapman each worked an inning to finish the five-hitter. Chapman struck out two in a perfect ninth for his 16th save.

Despite a rash of injuries, the Yankees hold a 1+-game lead in the AL East over Tampa Bay - and a widening gap on the Red Sox. New York has won all three meetings between the longtime rivals this season, beating Sale (1-7) twice and outscoring Boston 17-4. New York has won nine of 11 overall and is 31-10 since a 6-9 start.

Rafael Devers homered early for the third-place Red Sox, who fell 8+ games back in the division. That's the furthest they've been behind the Yankees since finishing the 2015 season nine games in the dust.

PIRATES 9, BREWERS 4

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Josh Bell finished off his historic May with two more hits, Starling Marte added three hits and scored three times and the Pirates pounced on struggling Milwaukee starter Jhoulys Chacin.

Bell went 2 for 5 and drove in a run in front of a crowd that included fans in the right-field seats wearing ''Bellieve'' T-shirts as part of a promotion that doubled as an All-Star Game push for the 26-year-old first baseman. Bell's two singles gave him 94 total bases in May, the most by any player in any month in the franchise's 138-year history. Bell hit .389 in May with 12 home runs, 12 doubles and 31 RBIs.

Kevin Newman extended his hitting streak to a career-best 10 games with a pair of hits, including a two-run single off reliever Freddy Peralta in the third to cap a six-run outburst that put the Pirates firmly in control.

Chris Archer (2-5) gave up early home runs to Jesus Aguilar and Keston Hiura, but settled down to work seven innings and pick up his first victory since April 7. Chacin (3-7) fell to 1-7 in his last 10 starts.

REDS 9, NATIONALS 3

CINCINNATI (AP) - Curt Casali hit a three-run homer off Patrick Corbin, who had one of the worst starts of his career, and the Reds beat Washington to end the Nationals' streak of eight straight wins at Great American Ball Park.

Corbin (5-3) gave up eight runs - one shy of his career high - in 2 2/3 innings. The Reds piled up 11 hits, matching the most the left-hander had allowed in a game. He retired only eight of his 20 batters. Corbin hadn't allowed so many runs since he also gave up eight on Sept. 8, 2017, during a 10-6 loss to San Diego. It's only the fifth time in his career that he has allowed eight or more runs.

Reds right-hander Tyler Mahle (2-5) gave up three runs in five innings, including Juan Soto's 10th homer. Soto has hit safely in a career-high 14 straight games.

Cincinnati's Joey Votto returned after missing three games with a tight right hamstring and had three hits. Eugenio Suarez was back in the lineup after getting hit on the left hand by Clay Holmes' pitch on Wednesday.

TWINS 5, RAYS 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Eddie Rosario hit a tiebreaking, two-run single off Adam Kolarek in the ninth inning after a pair of batters were hit by pitches, and Minnesota beat Tampa Bay in a matchup of two of the major leagues' hottest teams.

Minnesota, a big league-best 38-18, overcame a 3-1 fifth-inning deficit and won for the 13th time in 16 games. The Twins opened a season-high 10+-game in the AL Central. They have scored three or more runs in 24 straight games, matching the Minnesota record for a single season, set in 2006.

Jose Berrios and Taylor Rogers (2-1) combined on a four-hitter and stopped a six-game winning streak by the Rays (35-20), their longest since last August. Tampa Bay won the series opener 14-3 and had allowed three runs or fewer in its previous nine games. Helped by $7.11 tickets, the Rays drew 14,375 to Tropicana Field after three straight days of crowds ranging from 5,786 to 8,076.

Diego Castillo (1-4) hit Jonathan Schoop on the left shoulder with a slider leading off the ninth. Schoop was sacrificed to second and took third on a groundout, and Jorge Polanco was intentionally walked, and Castillo hit Willians Astudillo on the left arm with a slider on a 1-2 count.

ROCKIES 13, BLUE JAYS 6

DENVER (AP) - Trevor Story hit a pair of two-run homers as part of a career-high seven-RBI night and the Colorado Rockies beat the slumping Toronto Blue Jays for their sixth straight win.

It was the 13th career multi-homer game for Story, who also had a three-run double, walked and scored four times. Nolan Arenado added three hits, including two doubles, and three RBIs.

Rockies starter German Marquez (6-2) proved just as difficult at the plate as on the mound. He lined two singles in extending his hitting streak to five games, which is the longest by a Rockies pitcher since Mike Hampton hit safely in eight straight in 2002. On the mound, Marquez allowed two runs and struck out seven over seven efficient innings.

Edwin Jackson (0-3) tied a career high by allowing 10 earned runs in lasting just 2 1/3 innings. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a solo homer in the eighth during a four-run inning. Randal Grichuk had a solo shot in the second for the Blue Jays, who've dropped eight of their last nine games.

ORIOLES 9, GIANTS 5

BALTIMORE (AP) - Dwight Smith's first career grand slam capped a six-run outburst in the first inning and the Orioles outslugged the San Francisco Giants.

Trey Mancini and Renato Nunez also homered for the Orioles, who overcame a five-run, first-inning deficit and improved to 8-21 at home as the teams met at Camden Yards for the first time since 2004. Nunez has homered in seven of his last 11 games and has a team-leading 14 homers this season.

Mike Yastrzemski, traded by Baltimore on March 23 after he was reassigned to minor league camp, homered and tripled in his first two at-bats for San Francisco, which has lost eight of nine.

The Giants charged to a 5-0 lead off Andrew Cashner (6-2) in the first inning. The Orioles countered with six runs, highlighted by Smith's grand slam, in the bottom half off Drew Pomeranz (1-6). Cashner and Pomeranz combined for 90 pitches in the opening inning. It was the first time that two teams scored at least five runs in the first inning since July 6, 2012, (Yankees and Red Sox), according to STATS LLC.

Richard Bleier got five outs for his second save.

WHITE SOX 2, INDIANS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Dylan Covey pitched six effective innings for his first win since August, and the White Sox beat sloppy Cleveland for their season-high fifth straight win.

Charlie Tilson hit a two-run double to get Chicago's offense rolling. Tilson, Yoan Moncada, Yonder Alonso and Yolmer Sanchez each had two hits. The win moved the White Sox into a second-place tie in the AL Central with Cleveland.

The Indians committed four errors. Four of Chicago's six runs against slumping Cleveland starter Trevor Bauer were unearned.

Covey (1-4) settled down after allowing a leadoff homer to Francisco Lindor and scattered eight hits and ended a personal six-game losing streak. Josh Osich and Juan Minaya followed with three innings of one-hit relief.

Bauer (4-5) allowed nine hits and struck out eight in seven innings, but shaky fielding doomed the right-hander.

TIGERS 8, BRAVES 2

ATLANTA (AP) - Niko Goodrum homered twice and had a career-high five hits, Nicholas Castellanos and Grayson Greiner also went deep, and the Detroit Tigers romped past the Braves.

Spencer Turnbull (3-4) pitched into the seventh inning, allowing just five hits and one earned run in dealing the Braves their third straight loss at SunTrust Park.

Goodrum, who came into the night hitting just .208, launched a 419-foot drive that nearly went into the Chop House restaurant above the right-field seats in the third inning. He hit another almost as far in the eighth for his second career multihomer game. Goodrum finished 5 for 5 to raise his average to .230. He scored four times and also collected a run-scoring single in a three-run fifth that blew the game open.

After two straight strong starts, Atlanta's Mike Foltynewicz (1-4) had another rough night. Foltynewicz surrendered seven hits and five runs in five innings.

Atlanta has been outscored 22-6 in its last two defeats.

RANGERS 6, ROYALS 2

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Joey Gallo's first career grand slam capped a six-run, sixth-inning outburst as the Rangers rallied past the Kansas City Royals.

Gallo's home run, his team leading 16th of the season, sailed 457 feet.

Ariel Jurado (2-2) won for the first time in three major league starts this season. He allowed two runs on five hits and three walks and had career highs in strikeouts (six) and pitches (101).

Danny Duffy (3-2) lost for the first time since April 26. Carrying a two-hit shutout into the sixth inning, Duffy allowed all six runs, six hits and two walks - both in the sixth.

Jesse Chavez, the first of three Texas relievers, worked a 1-2-3 seventh inning. He ran his scoreless streak to 17 1/3 innings in May, a franchise record for one month.

Cheslor Cuthbert homered in his first major league at-bat of the season, and Alex Gordon tripled-in Kansas City's other run. Adalberto Mondesi had his major league-leading 19th stolen base, giving the Royals a major league-leading 53.

CARDINALS 2, CUBS 1, 10 INNINGS

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Matt Carpenter hit a game-ending single against an unusual defensive alignment in the 10th to lead the Cardinals past the Chicago Cubs.

The Cardinals won back-to-back games for the first time since April 30-May 1 and avoided the worst winning percentage for May in franchise history by going 9-18 (.333). They went 8-18 in May 1980.

Kolten Wong helped set up Carpenter's clutch swing with a one-out double off Mike Montgomery (1-1) for the team's lone extra-base hit. Dillon Maples then came in and walked Harrison Bader and Jedd Gyorko to load the bases. Cubs manager Joe Maddon brought in Steve Cishek to face Carpenter, and put four players on the right side of the infield. But Carpenter drove in Wong with a fly ball that found the grass in the left field corner.

Carlos Martinez pitched a perfect eighth for St. Louis, and Jordan Hicks (2-2) worked two scoreless innings. The last pitch Hicks threw in the ninth registered at 104.3 mph, which is the fastest in baseball this season.

MARINERS 4, ANGELS 3

SEATTLE (AP) - Jay Bruce hit his 300th career home run, Tom Murphy had a two-run shot and an RBI double, and the Mariners beat the Los Angeles Angels.

Bruce's seventh-inning homer to center field provided the insurance run the Mariners needed to preserve the narrow victory, snapping a three-game losing streak. Bruce became the eighth active player with 300 home runs and 300 doubles, achieved in 1,557 games. That list includes teammate Edwin Encarnacion (a late scratch due to a dental procedure) and the Angels' Albert Pujols.

The win snapped the Angels' three-game winning streak and wasted a fairly strong start by the Angels' Tyler Skaggs (4-5), who gave up just five hits but made a handful of costly mistakes while giving up four runs in seven innings.

The Angels briefly got to Mike Leake (4-6) in the sixth inning when Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani hit back-to-back home runs to left field with two outs. It was the first time Los Angeles has hit consecutive home runs this season, but it wasn't enough for the Angels.

PADRES 5, MARLINS 2

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Franmil Reyes, Hunter Renfroe and Ian Kinsler homered, and left-hander Joey Lucchesi combined with two relievers on a four-hitter for his first victory in six starts to lead the Padres past the Miami Marlins.

Lucchesi (4-3) hadn't won since beating Cincinnati at home on April 21. He retired his first seven batters before allowing a double by Miguel Rojas in the third. He then retired eight straight before allowing a home run by pinch-hitter Rosell Herrera with one out in the sixth. Lucchesi struck out five and walked one.

Craig Stammen pitched 1 2/3 hitless innings, Phil Maton allowed two singles to open the Marlins' ninth and Kirby Yates came on to get the final three outs for his 22nd save, best in the majors.

Herrera was pinch-hitting for lefty Caleb Smith (3-3), who lost his third straight decision after allowing two runs and three hits in five innings.

DODGERS 6, PHILLIES 3

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Max Muncy, Joc Pederson, Corey Seager and Enrique Hernandez homered, powering Los Angeles past Philadelphia in the opener of a series matching the National League's best teams.

The West-leading Dodgers improved to a major league-best 23-7 at home and have won 11 of their last 15 at Chavez Ravine against the East-leading Phillies. The Dodgers' 39 victories lead the NL. Los Angeles rapped out 12 hits while limiting the Phillies to five, including two in the ninth.

Kenta Maeda (7-2) allowed two runs and three hits in six innings and won his fourth straight start. He struck out six and walked none. Kenley Jansen earned his 17th save.

Muncy and Seager belted two-run shots and Pederson had a solo homer off Jake Arrieta (5-5), who gave up five runs and 10 hits in five innings, striking out three and walking one.

Philadelphia's Bryce Harper, Andrew McCutchen and Rhys Hoskins combined to go 2 for 12. McCutchen homered to lead off the fourth.

ASTROS 3, ATHLETICS 2

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Derek Fisher hit a tiebreaking homer to lead off the eighth inning for his first long ball of the season and the short-handed Houston Astros rallied to beat the Athletics.

The Astros trailed the A's 2-0 heading into the seventh inning on a night they were missing injured stars Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa and George Springer. But Josh Reddick started the comeback with a solo homer and Tony Kemp tied the game with a double. That set the stage for Fisher, who sent a drive out to center field against Lou Trivino (2-2) on the first pitch of the eighth to hand the A's their third straight loss following a 10-game winning streak.

Hector Rondon (3-1) pitched out of a jam in the seventh with help from a diving stop at shortstop by defensive replacement Jack Mayfield that held Ramon Laureano at third base with the infield drawn in. Roberto Osuna pitched the ninth for his 16th save in 17 chances.

Houston's Josh Reddick snapped an 0-for-15 rut with a solo homer.

METS 5, DIAMONDBACKS 4

PHOENIX (AP) - Carlos Gomez snapped a tie with a pinch-hit double during New York's bizarre two-run eighth inning, sending the Mets past the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Todd Frazier and Adeiny Hechavarria sparked New York's winning rally with consecutive two-out singles off Matt Andriese (3-4), putting runners on first and third. Pinch hitter J.D. Davis then hit a chopper toward the mound that bounced off Andriese's glove as he reached up. Marte could not handle the ball cleanly as the tying run scored. Gomez followed with a grounder inside the bag at third that drove in Hechavarria, but the ball boy stationed down the line - Arizona uses seniors dubbed ''Golden Glovers'' - fielded the ball thinking it was foul, and Davis was not permitted to score.

Zack Wheeler (5-3) struck out nine in seven innings, and Robert Gsellman got three outs for his first save.

Arizona lost its fifth straight game, matching a season high. Christian Walker and Ketel Marte homered for the Diamondbacks

***********************

Saturday?s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind??

13) Dodgers? pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu signed a one-year deal with the Dodgers this year for $18M; he?s having a great season, will get a bigger one-year deal next season. Who knows, he may even get a 2-year deal.

Contrast that to Dallas Keuchel, who is sitting out right now because he couldn?t get a multi-year contract. Keuchel would make more than Ryu if he had agreed to a one-year deal, but right now he is making bupkis this season, zero.

Question is, was it Keuchel who didn?t listen to his agent, or the agent who didn?t listen to Keuchel? At some point, the player has to play in order to get paid, right? Either way, it has been an expensive year for the pitcher. He?ll probably sign somewhere fairly soon.

12) Batters are 2-42 with runners in scoring position against Ryu this season.

11) Mets? TV guy Todd Zeile played 16 years in the major leagues; he grew up in the Los Angeles area, went to a lot of Dodger games as a kid. Zeile said on air the other night that his father told him that he didn?t believe Zeile was a major league player until he heard Vin Scully say his name on the air, thats how revered Scully is/was in Tinseltown.

10) New Packers? coach Matt LaFleur tore his achilles tendon playing basketball this week; he is having it operated on Sunday.

9) Since 2008, only two big leaguers have had an OB% of .340+ with 200+ PA in every season:
Joey Votto and???.Shin-Soo Choo

Funny thing about Choo is this; my fantasy team is having a dreadful season, so I?m looking to build for the future a little and Choo is 37- I?ve been looking to move him for prospects but with absolutely no luck, and he is really good. His OPS is .933, which is damn good.

One guy actually thought I was talking about Choi on Tampa Bay, and I?m laughing, thinking ?My team is worse than this guy?s and he doesn?t know who the players are.? Oy.

8) Raptors? coach Nick Nurse was head coach at Grandview College when he was 23 years old; he played at Northern Iowa. There?s a chance one or more of his players at Grandview was older than Nurse was when he was coaching them.

7) Baseball stuff:
? Colorado sent P Kyle Freeland down to AAA.
? Cardinals put C Yadier Molina (thumb) on IL.
? Marlins put 1B Neil Walker (quad) on IL.

6) Tampa Bay Rays have scored in first inning in 25 of their 54 games; they?re 20-5 when they score in the first inning.

Marlins have scored in only nine first innings, fewest in major leagues.

5) Arizona Diamondbacks have seven of the top 75 picks in next week?s baseball draft.

4) My favorite Al Pacino movies:
a) Any Given Sunday
b) Heat
c) Scent of a Woman

3) Cubs/Cardinals are going to play a two-game series next season at London?s West Ham Olympic Stadium on June 13-14, 2020. New York-Boston are heading to London this month.

2) There is a newscaster at WKRN in Nashville named Bob Mueller; you can imagine that the last couple of years have been very interesting for him.

The TV Bob Mueller pronounces his name differently than the lawyer Bob Mueller, but he gets hate mail from people and strange looks when he makes reservations in restaurants. Sometimes real life is stranger than fiction.

1) Los Angeles Angels are driving me nuts with the way they use the ?opener?. Tampa Bay uses Ryan Stanek most every time they use an opener, which makes it easy to chart. Angels use just about all their pitchers- they?ve used nine different openers this season, in addition to their four normal starting pitchers.

Makes me wonder when you?re using minor league pitchers to start a game.

LEADING OFF: Davis could be back, Kershaw vs Harper
May 31, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Saturday:

KD'S RETURN?

The Oakland Athletics are hoping to get injured slugger Khris Davis back in the lineup for the middle game of a series against the first-place Houston Astros. Davis took batting practice before the series opener and could be activated from the injured list as early as Saturday after being sidelined since May 22 with a left him injury. Davis might like to get back in time to face Houston ace Justin Verlander (8-2, 2.38 ERA). Davis homered three times in eight at-bats against Verlander last season. Brett Anderson (6-3, 3.86 ERA) starts for Oakland.

KERSHAW VS. HARPER

Clayton Kershaw starts for the Los Angeles Dodgers against the Philadelphia Phillies in a match-up of first-place teams. The left-hander is 5-0 with a 3.46 ERA and 48 strikeouts this year and 3-5 with a 3.07 ERA in 13 starts against the Phillies. Kershaw will be facing Bryce Harper, who is 2 for 21 with 13 strikeouts against the Dodgers' ace.

GERMAN-TOWN

Yankees right-hander Domingo German (9-1, 3.43) leads the majors in wins. He won six straight starts before getting tagged for a career-high seven runs and nine hits, including four homers, over five innings Sunday in a no-decision at Kansas City.

MILE HIGH WELCOME

Blue Jays right-hander Marcus Stroman has allowed three earned runs over his last three starts. His 2.74 ERA ranks among the leaders in the American League. On Saturday, he has his work cut out for him when he gets his first experience with hitter friendly Coors Field. The Rockies are hitting .296 at home this season and averaging 6.2 runs.

LOOKS FAMILIAR

The Nationals face former teammate Tanner Roark in the second game of their series against the Reds. The Nationals traded Roark for Tanner Rainey in December. Roark hasn't allowed a homer in his last 35 1/3 innings, the second-longest such streak of his career.

SEVENTH HEAVEN?

Milwaukee's Brandon Woodruff will try for his seventh straight victory when he faces the Pirates in Pittsburgh. The 26-year-old is 6-0 with a 2.37 ERA over his last eight starts, including a 5-0 mark with a 1.42 ERA in his last five outings. A win would lift Woodruff into a tie with Hyun-Jin Ryu of the Los Angeles Dodgers for tops in the National League. Woodruff is 0-1 in three appearances against the Pirates in his career.

SOROKA'S START

Atlanta right-hander Mike Soroka is close to qualifying for the best ERA in the big leagues. The 21-year-old Canadian goes into his start against Detroit with a miniscule 1.07 ERA, having not allowed more than one earned run in any of his eight starts.

Soroka has pitched 50 2/3 innings, meaning he would need to go a season high 7 1/3 in his ninth start -Atlanta's 58th game- to qualify for the ERA list. Going into Friday's games, Ty Buttrey of the Los Angeles Angels led the big leagues with a 1.27 ERA. Hyun-jin Ryu of the Los Angeles Dodgers had the best mark in the NL at 1.48.

June Pitchers Report
May 31, 2019
By Marc Lawrence

If you think the Belmont Stakes is a long race for horses on the Triple Crown trail, wait until you get a load of MLB hurlers during the month of June. It?s where many either hit a wall and fold-up or find a second-gear and become crucial to their team?s hopes of being in a pennant chase during the dogs days of summer.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team-starts over the course of the last three seasons during the month of June. On the flip side, we've also listed pitchers that struggle in June, winning 33% percent or less of their team-start efforts. To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each June over the last three years. And for your convenience alongside each record, we break down each pitcher?s greatest success or greatest failure rate either home (H) or away (A) within his good or bad month.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season?s June list.

GOOD MONTH PITCHERS

Carrasco, Carlos - 10-5 (5-1H)

The Indians right-hander has not been his usual self in 2019 with an ERA 0.75 higher than his career norm. However, Carrasco is well known for hitting a hot stretch during the season and with the weather likely to finally heat up, so might Cleveland's veteran starter.

Davies, Zach - 8-3 (3-1 A)

Davies might not be big (6'0) or imposing (155 pounds), but the Milwaukee hurler can certainly pitch. He starts this month with a 2.19 ERA and opposing batters have just a .311 OBP against him. With runners on base, the OBP drops to .252. He's a gamer.

Fiers, Mike - 10-5 (5-2 A)

Aside from the no-hitter, this Oakland starter has not pitched well, with an ERA almost a run higher than his career number of 4.10. However, it has been coming down and if he can keep the ball in the yard (11 homers allowed), he should continue to improve in June.

Foltynewicz, Mike - 9-2 (7-0 H)

With no spring training due to injury, Foltynewicz has struggled to get in a rhythm. Pitch placement has been the Braves righty downfall, allowing a homer every 10 outs this season to date. If the strikeouts return to normal, this could be a springboard month for him.

Godley, Zack - 8-2 (5-1 A)

With an ERA of 7.36, Godley has been sent to the bullpen to figure out how to miss more bats. (.295 batting average allowed in 2019)

Greinke, Zack - 14-3 (9-1 A)

If you are too young to have seen Hall of Famer Greg Maddox pitch for the Cubs or Braves, this is the closest you will get in the big leagues today. When Maddox lost MPH on the fastball, he figured out how to change speeds better, create more spin and movement on his pitches and keep hitters guessing. That is exactly what Greinke is doing at 35 and he's having a masterful season.

*Kershaw, Clayton - (11-2 (6-1 A)

In his 11th season in the majors, Kershaw no longer blows hitters away and a straight change is still a work in progress but betting against the best pitcher of this generation is still fool-hardy, especially with the offense the Dodgers own.

Kluber, Corey - 11-5 (7-3 H)

Suffered a fractured forearm on his pitching arm on May 1st. Recently had the first cast removed and reports on proper healing are on schedule, but no time is given on possible return.

*Lester, Jon - 15-2 (9-1 A)

After a fantastic start to the season, the latter stages of May were rough on Lester. In June, he's been nearly unbeatable in recent years and will look to return to dominance again.

Sale, Chris - 11-5 (6-1 H)

The velocity is coming back for the Boston left-hander, but command of the fastball and slider remains a conundrum from start to start. Like many hurlers in the East and Midwest, some warm temperatures might get Sale back on schedule.

*Sanchez, Aaron - 7-3 (4-0 H)

Pitching for a much weaker Toronto club, Sanchez's ERA is up. This is attributable to walking more batters, which are up 13 percent over previous averages. Could be hard to match good numbers this month.

Tanaka, Masahiro - 9-4 (5-2 A)

With Yankees having an incredible season, no reason for Tanaka to not to continue to benefit from superior run support. Tanaka's basic stats are similar to the past, but like a lot of pitchers, homers are up.

BAD MONTH PITCHERS

Archer, Chris - 4-8 (1-3 A)

We have long since given up on the idea that Archer will ever be a top line pitcher that he looked like five years ago. His WHIP is up from 1.25 to 1.55 and he's averaging a walk just over every four outs he induces.

Gausman, Kevin - 4-11 (1-6 A)

Another pitcher who was supposed to be a stud, but does not have that third quality pitch. Gausman has actually given up fewer hits with a .228 batting average surrendered (.264 lifetime), but Atlanta has the right-hander is throwing 13 fewer pitches a start, which is probably helping him. Strictly a No. 4 starter today.

Gray, Sonny - 4-8 (2-4 H)

Not everyone can pitch in New York with the expectations and media coverage and Gray might have been one of those guys. He doesn't have the same velocity of a few seasons ago, but he's more comfortable in Cincinnati and his ERA is drifting downward. Will this trend continue? Stay tuned.

Harvey, Matt - 4-9 (2-6 A)

A supposed injury has Harvey on the IL in Anaheim, but with a 7.50 ERA, his results on the season is likely to miss a couple of starts or more and possibly end up as a long reliever going forward.

Hellickson, Jeremy - 2-10 (1-5 H)

Soft-tosser with an ERA over 6.00 and a WHIP over 1.70 proves he's always in trouble and mostly unable to work out of it. Hellickson is not fooling hitters anymore and not us, either.

*Liriano, Francisco - 4-8 (2-4 H)

Working exclusively out of the bullpen this season for Pittsburgh.

Cardinals C Molina goes on IL with strain
May 31, 2019
By The Associated Press

ST. LOUIS (AP) Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina was put on the 10-day injured list Friday because of a strained right thumb tendon.

The 36-year-old, a nine-time All-Star, got hurt during Saturday's game against Atlanta and tried to play through the injury.

''It's just a slight little tear between the thumb and the webbing, his right finger, rather,'' Cardinals manager Mike Shildt said.

Shildt said the injury affected Molina's batting.

St. Louis said the roster move was retroactive to Wednesday.

Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak said surgery had not been discussed.

''We did an MRI this morning and that indicated that there is some damage to the tendon in his thumb, throwing hand, and we'll have him see a specialist this afternoon, as well,'' Mozeliak said. ''Probably have a better idea of maybe length and what to expect by sometime tomorrow morning.''

Matt Wieters will get most of the playing time while Molina is sidelined. St. Louis selected the contract of Andrew Knizner from Triple-A Memphis.

Molina is batting .265 and four home runs and 33 RBIs and started 49 of the Cardinals' first 53 games. He is on the disabled/list for the sixth for the sixth time.

The 24-year-old Knizner was batting .286 with five home runs and 17 RBIs at Memphis.

Weekend Watch
Joe Williams

Saturday, June 1

It's a lefty-lefty battle at T-Mobile Park (still weird not calling it Safeco Field), as the Angels use LHP Andrew Heaney in his second outing of the season against LHP Tommy Milone, who makes just his third trip to the mound for the M's. Heaney debuted against the Rangers on May 26, allowing two earned runs, two hits, one walk and eight strikeouts over five innings in a no-decision. The last time he faced the Mariners he allowed two earned runs, eight hits and four walks over five innings in a no-decsion on Sept. 15, a game which the M's eventually won. Milone faced the Rangers twice, striking out 13 batters over 10 2/3 innings, and he enters with a 3.38 ERA. The Halos enters 5-12 across the past 17 vs. LHP, while the M's are 2-9 in their past 11 against southpaws, so something's gotta give.

The Astros will send RHP Justin Verlander out to face LHP Brett Anderson. Houston has cashed in 23 of Verlander's past 28 road starts, while going 19-6 across his past 25 outings inside the division. Houston is 20-6 in the past 26 games overall against AL West foes, too. For the A's, they have won 10 of the past 13, although they were cooled off on Friday night. They're 6-1 over Anderson's past seven at home, and 4-1 in his past five outings overall. However, Oakland is just 1-4 in his past five against winning teams, and 2-7 in his past nine at home against winning sides.

In Los Angeles it's a lefty vs. lefty battle as the Phillies trot out LHP Cole Irvin to face Dodgers ace LHP Clayton Kershaw. The Dodgers have won each of Kershaw's past eight regular-season games, and 16 consecutive regular-season starts by the lefty dating back since the Giants beat the Dodgers on Aug. 13 when he took a no-decision. His last loss came back on July 21 in Milwaukee, and his last regular-season setback at Dodger Stadium came April 25, 2018.

The Phillies are just 4-9 across the past 13 games against National League West teams, while going 3-8 in the past 11 road games against a left-handed starter. For the Dodgers, they're 17-4 in the past 21 games against teams with a winning record, while going 36-17 in the past 53 games overall. They're also 41-10 in Kershaw's past 51 outings against National League East teams, while going 19-7 in the past 26 home games against teams with a winning overall mark. The under has also cashed in each of Kershaw's past five outings against the Phillies, while the Dodgers are 5-2 across his past seven starts vs. Philadelphia. The Phils have won just three of their past 13 overall at Dodger Stadium, too.

Weather Report
The precipitation and wind forecast are all favorable. Precip calls for a 20 percent or less chance, and winds at all MLB venues will be 10 mph or less, so basically no factor.

Sunday, June 2

The Mets and Diamondbacks wrap up their series in the desert with LHP Steven Matz working for the visitors against RHP Merrill Kelly. New York has won nine of Matz's past 12 outings, including 5-1 in his past six against NL West clubs. The Mets are 1-6 over his past seven road outings against teams with a losing record, however. The Diamondbacks are just 1-4 over Kelly's past five outings, and they're 1-4 in his past five against teams with a losing overall mark. The under is 9-4 in Matz's past 13 starts against teams with a losing record, and 3-1-1 in Matz's past five home outings and 4-1 in the past five against teams with a losing record.

Sunday's nationally televised game on ESPN features the Red Sox and Yankees, as LHP David Price and LHP CC Sabathia hook up. The Red Sox enter just 2-7 in the past nine road games against LHP, and they're 1-4 in Price's past five outings. However, Boston is an impressive 16-6 in his past 22 outings against winning sides, and 13-4 in the past 17 inside the AL East. The Yankees are just 6-2 across the past eight starts by Sabathia, while going 28-9 in his past 37 outings at home. The under is 6-0 over Price's past six against winning teams, while goiing 8-3-1 in his past 12 overall and 5-2-1 in the past eight road outings by Price. For Sabathia, the under is 34-16-3 in his past 53 at home, including 18-7-1 in his past 26 at home against winning sides. The under is a perfect 11-0 in Sabathia's past 11 home starts vs. Boston, and 15-5-1 in his ;ast 21 overall aginst Boston.

Weather Report
The battle between the Brewers and Pirates will feature wins blowing out to right field at 10-13 mph. Wind will also be a factor for the Indians-White Sox battle, blowing from third base to first base at a 11-14 mph clip. The Cubs and Cardinals will also be contending with winds blowing 11-14 mph from the left-center field power alley to home plate.

The only trouble spot for rain will be the Sunday night affair, as there is a 35 percent chance of ran at first pitch, dwindling to 30 percent by 8 p.m. ET, and 25 percent by 9 p.m. ET. The game should get in, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see the tarpaulin come out.
