PLAY-AGAINST TREND OF THE DAY:

-- The Giants are 0-28 SU this decade as a 140-plus dog off a game as a dog in which they struck out their opponent at least ten times and stranded at least six of their opponent's baserunners, as long as their opponent is not winless on the season.

Zach Davies wins 7th game for Milwaukee
June 8, 2019
By The Associated Press

MILWAUKEE (AP) Zach Davies became the first Milwaukee starter to win his first seven decisions in a season, hanging on for five innings Saturday before the Brewers' bullpen finished off a 5-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Ryan Braun had an RBI single in the fourth that put the Brewers ahead to stay. Mike Moustakas hit his 19th home run and pinch-hitter Manny Pina added a late homer.

Milwaukee moved a season-high nine games over .500 and beat the Pirates for the fifth time in six games this year.

Davies (7-0) gave up seven hits and left with a 4-3 lead. Four relievers blanked the Pirates on one hit, with Josh Hader striking out the side in the ninth for his 15th save.

Pirates starter Jordan Lyles lasted only three innings, giving up three runs on five hits and four walks.

Michael Feliz (2-2) took the loss.

Colin Moran hit his ninth homer of the year for the Pirates. Rookie Bryan Reynolds extended his hitting streak to a major league-high 16 games with a single in the third.

BRAVES 1, MARLINS 0

MIAMI (AP) - Julio Teheran pitched six sharp innings, rookie Austin Riley scored the only run and Atlanta edged Miami.

The Braves won despite getting only three hits and improved to 5-0 this season at Marlins Park. Miami had just four hits.

Teheran (4-4) gave up two hits and struck out five. Luke Jackson recorded four outs for his ninth save.

Riley hustled for a leadoff double in the seventh against Trevor Richards (3-6), took third on a flyout and scored on Tyler Flowers' sacrifice fly.

Richards gave up two hits in seven innings.

TIGERS 9, TWINS 3

DETROIT (AP) - JaCoby Jones homered twice and drove in a career-high five runs in Detroit's win over Minnesota.

Christin Stewart also homered for the Tigers, who had lost three straight and 13 of 14 at Comerica Park.

Nick Ramirez (2-0), Detroit's second pitcher in a bullpen game, gave up one run and three hits with three walks in three innings.

Kyle Gibson (6-3) gave up five runs and eight hits with two walks in five innings.

Jones hit a three-run homer in the second and a tw-run homer in the eighth. Stewart led off the bottom of the third with his fifth homer.

INDIANS 8, YANKEES 4

CLEVELAND (AP) - Rookie Oscar Mercado hit a two-run homer off CC Sabathia to break a fifth-inning tie and Cleveland defeated New York.

Roberto Perez homered in his fourth straight game for Cleveland. The Indians have won four of five on their homestand against AL division leaders New York and Minnesota.

Didi Gregorius hit a home run in his second game back with New York this season. The Yankees have lost five of six.

Sabathia (3-3), denied the 250th win of his career for the second straight outing, appeared to injure his leg fielding a groundball earlier in the fifth. The 38-year-old left-hander was removed after the fifth, allowing four runs.

Adam Plutko (2-1), called up from Triple-A Columbus before the game, retired 16 of the final 17 hitters he faced following Gregorius' two-run homer in the first. The right-hander sent down the last 10 hitters, giving up two runs in six innings.

ORIOLES 4, ASTROS 1

HOUSTON (AP) - Renato Nunez hit his 16th homer, Richie Martin added a two-run shot in the ninth and Baltimore snapped a three-game skid by beating Houston.

Nunez homered in the sixth inning and the Astros tied it in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly, but a solid defensive play by right fielder Anthony Santander ended the threat.

It was still tied in the eighth when Will Harris (1-1) took over for starter Framber Valdez and Hanser Alberto greeted him with a double to left field. Trey Mancini singled, and Nunez reached when Alberto got caught in a rundown between third and home for the first out.

Pedro Severino grounded into fielder's choice, but the Orioles took a 2-1 lead when shortstop Jack Mayfield badly overthrew first base for an error that allowed Mancini to score.

Paul Fry (1-3) struck out two in 1 2/3 innings, and Miguel Castro got the last four outs for his second save.

Valdez yielded five hits and one run in a career-high seven innings in his first start this season after making 14 relief appearances.

PHILLIES 4, REDS 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Nick Pivetta struck out six in his first career complete game, Jay Bruce had a two-run single and Philadelphia beat Cincinnati.

Pivetta (4-1) allowed six hits in his third start since his demotion to the minors. The right-hander is 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA since being recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

J.T. Realmuto hit a solo homer for the NL East leaders.

Reds starter Tanner Roark (4-5) gave up four runs and six hits in five innings.

Pivetta retired 17 straight batters after allowing two hits to start the game. He hadn't gone more than 7 1/3 innings in his previous 64 career starts.

Nick Senzel led off the game with a double, went to third on Joey Votto's single and scored on Eugenio Suarez's double-play grounder.

RAYS 9, RED SOX 2, 1ST GAME

RED SOX 5, RAYS 1, 2ND GAME

BOSTON (AP) - Marco Hernandez hit a key two-run double in his first major league start in over two years, David Price pitched six solid innings in his 300th career start as Boston beat Tampa Bay to salvage a split of a day-night doubleheader.

It was Boston's first home win over the Rays this season after losing the first four meetings, including the opener.

Tampa Bay's four-game winning streak ended.

Price (4-2) gave up a run on five hits, matched his season-high with 10 strikeouts and walked two.

Reliver Colin Poche took the loss in his major league debut, giving up two runs in 1 1/3 innings.

In the opener, Ryan Yarbrough held Boston to an unearned run into the eighth inning and Travis d'Arnaud hit a three-run homer.

Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a solo homer for Boston, which has dropped the first two of a four-game series.

The 27-year-old Yarbrough (5-2) limited Boston to three singles, striking out seven without issuing a walk before Bradley homered off the Pesky Pole in the eighth.

The Rays jumped ahead 4-0 in the second against Josh Smith (0-2).

RANGERS 10, ATHLETICS 5, 1ST GAME

RANGERS 3, ATHLETICS 1, 2ND GAME

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Adrian Sampson threw a four-hitter for his first career complete game, and Texas wrapped up a doubleheader sweep over Oakland.

Sampson (5-3) struck out seven and walked one over 109 pitches to win his fifth game in a row.

Danny Santana got the first hit for Texas in the nightcap with a one-out single in the fifth and scored before adding an RBI triple an inning later.

Mark Canha's 10th homer, in the fourth, accounted for the only Oakland run.

In the opener, Tim Federowicz homered in his first big league game this season, Nomar Mazara also went deep.

Jeffrey Springs (4-1) worked three innings in relief of starter Joe Palumbo, the lefty who went four innings in his big league debut after being recalled from Double-A Frisco.

Texas went ahead to stay with a three-run first off Paul Blackburn (0-1), who was called up as Oakland's 26th player for the doubleheader after being in Triple-A Las Vegas all season. The right-hander gave up five runs in three innings.

Between games, Texas celebrated the retirement of the No. 29 jersey of former third baseman Adrian Beltre.

Matt Olson and Josh Phegley homered for the A's.

WHITE SOX 2, ROYALS 0

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Lucas Giolito worked into the eighth inning and had a career-high 11 strikeouts to win his seventh consecutive start, outdueling Brad Keller as Chicago beat Kansas City.

Giolito (9-1) allowed three hits and two walks in 7 2/3 innings.

Rookie Eloy Jimenez hit a two-run homer in the second inning off Keller (3-8), who worked eight innings, allowing two runs on five hits, with one walk and four strikeouts.

Alex Colome pitched the ninth for his 13th save in as many chances.

Royals manager Ned Yost was ejected for arguing a strike call to Alex Gordon in the sixth inning.

DIAMONDBACKS 6, BLUE JAYS 0

TORONTO (AP) - Zack Greinke and four relievers combined on a five-hitter, Alex Avila and Kevin Cron hit solo home runs and Arizona topped Toronto.

Nick Ahmed drove in two runs as the Diamondbacks won their third straight.

Greinke (7-2) allowed four hits in six innings to win for the first time in four starts. Matt Andriese pitched the eighth and Zack Godley finished.

Toronto was blanked for the fifth time this season. The Blue Jays have scored two runs or fewer five times in their past seven games. They went 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position and left seven men stranded.

Blue Jays right-hander Aaron Sanchez (3-7) allowed five runs and six hits in six innings.

METS 5, ROCKIES 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Steven Matz struck out 10, Pete Alonso moved closer to the Mets' rookie home run record and New York beat Colorado.

Matz (5-4) threw 120 pitches in six innings. He gave up two earned runs on six hits and two walks.

The Rockies stranded seven runners against Matz, who struck out Charlie Blackmon, leaving runners at the corners in the sixth.

Alonso led off the seventh with his 21st home run - it came with some drama, too.

Alonso's drive was just beyond the glove of left fielder David Dahl and off the orange line atop the fence. The ball bounced back onto the field, Alonso kept running and he slid into third. An umpire crew review showed it was indeed a home run. Alonso moved within five of matching Darryl Strawberry's rookie record.

Seth Lugo retired all six batters he faced and Edwin Diaz notched his 14th save with a one-hit ninth.

Jon Gray (5-5) allowed four runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out eight over 5 2/3 innings.

CARDINALS 9, CUBS 4

CHICAGO (AP) - Pinch-hitter Victor Caratini hit a tiebreaking bases-loaded double in Chicago's four-run sixth inning in a win over St. Louis.

Hitting for starting pitcher Jon Lester with the bases loaded, Caratini lined the first pitch from John Gant to left field. Marcell Ozuna attempted a sliding catch, but the ball dropped and rolled to the wall, allowing three runs to score.

Kyle Schwarber, who had homered in the fourth inning, followed with a double to drive in Caratini, and the Cubs won for the fifth time in six games.

Lester (5-4) was hit hard early, allowing all four St. Louis runs in the first inning on long homers by Ozuna and Harrison Bader. He retired the last 11 hitters he faced in five-hit, six-inning outing.

John Brebbia (1-3), the first of five St. Louis relievers, allowed two runs in 1 1/3 innings and took the loss.

DODGERS 7, GIANTS 2

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Corey Seager had three of his four hits and three of his four RBIs following intentional walks to Cody Bellinger, and Los Angeles beat San Francisco.

Justin Turner added three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored and pinch-hitter Kyle Garlick started the go-ahead rally in the sixth with his first career hit.

Rich Hill (3-1) allowed two runs in five innings, escaping a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the fifth.

Jeff Samardzija (3-5) worked 5 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits, and three earned runs while striking out five and walking two.

Aramis Garcia hit a solo homer and Donovan Solano added an RBI single for the Giants.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

College football spreads for games on Nov 2:

? Miami @ Florida State (-1.5)

? Houston @ Central Florida (-14)

? Georgia (-3.5) vs Florida (@ Jacksonville)

? Virginia Tech @ Notre Dame (-16)

? Oregon (-1) @ USC

? Utah @ Washington (-8)

**********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a summer Saturday

13) I?m probably a little late with this, but if you like music, A Star Is Born is an outstanding movie and I highly recommend it. Saw it this weekend; I?ve never seen the Kris Kristofferson version from 1976 or the much older version, but Bradley Cooper/Lady Gaga had great chemistry. Not that pleasant a movie, but really well done and great acting.

12) Indiana-Kentucky high school All-Stars have a game every year; Indiana won this year?s game 120-74- a kid named Jake LaRavia of Lawrence Central apparently dominated the game.

Writer Gregg Doyle did nothing but rave about the 6-8 LaRavia, who will attend Indiana State in the fall. He made 42% of his 3?s last year in high school, but Doyle says his game is well-rounded and that the Sycamores should be very excited to have him on their side next year.

11) Texas Rangers retired Adrian Beltre?s number 29 Saturday night; little unusual for a team to retire a guy?s number so soon after he retires. Quite an honor.

10) Angels 12, Mariners 3?Seattle?s Yusei Kikuchi had a 3.43 ERA through his first 11 starts; in his last 9.2 IP, he?s allowed 29 hits and 17 runs. No bueno.

9) Raptors? G Fred VanVleet needed seven stitches and lost part of a tooth in Friday night?s win in Oakland; he collided with Golden State?s Shaun Livingston.

8) Baseball can be weird; Minnesota?s Max Kepler was in an 0-21 slump, but then Thursday, he went 4-4 wth three homers against Trevor Bauer. Go figure.

7) Baseball stuff:
? Red Sox put 1B Mitch Moreland (quad) on IL.
? Pirates activated OF Corey Dickerson from the 60-day IL.
? Cardinals placed 3B Jedd Gyorko on the 10-day (back)
? Padres placed RHP Adam Warren on the 10-day IL (forearm)
? Angels put Trevor Cahill (elbow) on the IL.

6) Not only is the Giants? Brandon Crawford the oldest starting shortstop in the majors, he is the one of only two starting SS?s (Elvis Andrus) who is 30+ years of age.

5) NBA will have two regular season games in Mexico next season; Mavericks-Pistons will play on December 12, with Suns-Spurs meeting two days later.

4) Brothers CJ and Kevin Cron both hit their first major league homer in Toronto; their father Chris Cron his two major league hits, both in Toronto.

3) Vanderbilt 3, Duke 0? Kid named Kumar Rocker threw a no-hitter, struck out 19 for Vandy; it is funny how Vanderbilt is lousy at football, mediocre at basketball but great at baseball. Young Mr Rocker is a freshman, has quite a future ahead of him.

2) Oregon State C Adley Rutschman is said to be the best draft prospect since Bryce Harper in 2010 and he is the best catching prospect since Buster Posey in 2008. He?s a switch-hitter with power, and he?s a very advanced receiver, but here?s the thing:

When you?re a really good hitter and a team invests a ton of money in you, they might want you to change positions, to maximize your career? catchers tend to fade out earlier, but to wear and tear. Rutschman may be learning other positions as he climbs the Orioles? minor league ladder.

1) Quote of the Day, part 2:
?He?s not the biggest guy, but he definitely walks with a presence, walks with a purpose. He?s taken on a good role in knowing all the plays and being able to call some plays for us. He?s quicker than snot. He?s been flying around and making a lot of good plays.?

Steelers?LB TJ Watt, talking about first round pick, LB Devin Bush

STREAKING/SLUMPING STARTERS

STREAKING

Jake Odorizzi, Minnesota Twins, (8-2, 1.96 ERA, $748):
The Twins right-hander continues his impressive form having gone three-straight starts - and six of his last seven starts - without giving up a single run. On the season he's held opponents to a batting average of .181 while having a WHIP of 0.96. Odorizzi hasn't lost in nearly two months, with his last defeat coming on April 10. Over his last nine starts he's gone 8-0 with an incredible 1.02 ERA.

Odorizzi and Minnesota will take their 23-12 away record to Detroit to face Ryan Carpenter (1-2 with a 6.35 ERA in five starts) and the Tigers. The Tigers are just 11-20 at home and are priced at +210 underdogs.

SLUMPING

Drew Smyly, Texas Rangers (1-4, 7.93 ERA, $-136):
Smyly might be one of the worst starters in baseball but he just keeps eating innings. He's given up seven runs in each of his last two starts while also giving up a total of seven homeruns over his most recent three starts. Smyly will put his .283 BAA and 1.86 WHIP on the line against the Oakland Athletics.
The A's will have Frankie Montas on the mound. Montas has been just as hot as Smyly has been cold, posting a 7-2 record with a 2.83 ERA. Smyly and the Rangers are +150 underdogs with the Over/Under set at 11.

THREE STRIKES

DEJA VU

Last Sunday, Angels 21-year-old hurler Jose Suarez made his big league debut against the Mariners. This Sunday he'll play his second career game...also against the Mariners. Suarez threw well in his debut, allowing three runs over five 2-3 innings in a 13-3 victory. But the Mariners hitters will be more familar with Suarez this time around and they bat much better away from home, plating 5.44 runs per game with a slugging percentage of .487 (second-best in the majors) on the road. The M's will have Wade LeBlanc and his 5.70 ERA on the mound. With Seattle 42-22 O/U this season, and the Angels 8-3-2 to the Over in their last 13 games, the Over 10 is worth consideration.

BIG PICKUP

The Phillies recent trade for Jay Bruce has already paid off in a big way. The left-handed slugger has batted .500 with four dingers and nine RBI in four games with Philadelphia. Bruce and the Phillies will go up against Sonny Gray and the Reds today and Bruce has +115 odds to get Over 1.5 total bases.

THOR PAYING OFF FOR OVER BETTORS

To say Noah Syndergaard has had an inconsistent year would be an understatement. The former All-Star has seemingly lost his edge and now sits at 3-4 with a 4.83 ERA. But oddsmakers seem to be setting his lines like the ace he used to be. With the Mets hosting the Rockies and starting pitcher Jeff Hoffman (7.29 ERA and .310 BA in four starts), look to the Over which has gone 8-2-1 in Thor's last 11 starts. Currently the O/U is installed at a very reasonable 8 runs.

LEADING OFF: Sparkman faces Anderson again, Gardner's lip
June 8, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

KEEP IT COOL

Royals right-hander Glenn Sparkman pitches against the White Sox at Kauffman Stadium - in his last outing, he was ejected for hitting Chicago sparkplug Tim Anderson in the helmet with a pitch.

Sparkman was tossed in the second inning on May 29 in Chicago. The Royals have mixed it up with the bat-flipping Anderson a few times.

RIVALRY NIGHT

It's Cardinals-Cubs under the lights at Wrigley Field when Adam Wainwright (5-5, 4.34 ERA) faces Kyle Hendricks (6-4, 3.16) in the series finale. Wainwright tossed eight shutout innings in a 2-1 win over the Cubs at St. Louis last Sunday when he allowed two hits but walked a career-high seven. Hendricks has won five straight decisions over his last seven starts with a 2.09 ERA during that span.

OUCH!

Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner will see how he's feeling, a day after his hard hit - but not the kind he hoped for.

Fuming after his bid for extra bases was caught Saturday, Gardner fired his batting helmet against a dugout wall in Cleveland- only to have the protective gear ricochet back and smack him in the face.

The result: A bloody lower lip that took six stitches to close. He said getting the stitches hurt more than being hit with the helmet.

''It was just frustration building up, we gave up the lead,'' Gardner said. ''You hit a ball like that that's an out, it's just frustrating.''

Gardner was 0 for 4 in the 8-4 loss to Cleveland. He's hitless in his last 22 at-bats, dropping his batting average to .217.

CHECK THEM

Red Sox slugger J.D. Martinez has missed three straight games after being removed Thursday with back tightness. ''We'll try for Sunday,'' manager Alex Cora said after a doubleheader split with Tampa Bay at Fenway Park. ... Diamondbacks outfielder Adam Jones was held out of the starting lineup in Toronto for a third straight game because of a hamstring problem.

STILL WAITING

Dallas Keuchel's first start in the minors for the Atlanta Braves was rained out, meaning he'll need to wait another day or two before taking the mound.

The newly signed former Cy Young Award winner was supposed to pitch Saturday for Triple-A Gwinnett, but the game never began. More rain is in the forecast, so Keuchel is likely to pitch Monday for Class A Rome in the South Atlantic League. The 31-year-old lefty is expected to throw 75 to 90 pitches.

PITCHER-BASED TREND OF THE DAY:

Hendricks masters Cardinals again in Cubs' 5-1 win
June 9, 2019

CHICAGO (AP) Kyle Hendricks tossed one-run ball over seven innings to continue his dominance over St. Louis, lifting the Chicago Cubs to a 5-1 win over the Cardinals on Sunday night.

Carlos Gonzalez hit his first homer with the Cubs and Kyle Schwarber went 2 for 3 with two RBIs as Chicago completed a three-game sweep of its NL Central rivals and a 6-1 homestand.

All nine games between the Cardinals and Cubs this season have been won by the home team. The Cardinals swept the Cubs in St. Louis last weekend, and Chicago had another three-game sweep at Wrigley Field last month.

Hendricks (7-4) scattered eight hits to win his sixth straight decision. Steve Cishek worked a scoreless eighth, Carl Edwards got two outs in the ninth and Pedro Strop got the final out for his seventh save.

Hendricks is now 7-0 with a 2.31 ERA in his last 10 starts against St. Louis. The Cubs have won all 10 games.

Paul Goldschmidt had two hits and Kolten Wong added an RBI double for St. Louis.

Chicago took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI groundout by Anthony Rizzo. The Cardinals quickly tied the score in the second on an RBI double by Wong.

The Cubs regained the lead with two runs in the fifth. Jason Heyward led off with a single and was sacrificed to second by Hendricks. David Bote, batting ninth, followed with a single to center to score Heyward. Schwarber then doubled to right-center, scoring Bote all the way from first base.

Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright (5-6) exited the game at that point and Giovanny Gallegos came in and retired Kris Bryant and Rizzo to keep the score 3-1.

St. Louis tried to answer in the sixth as Paul Goldschmidt led off with a double and Marcell Ozuna followed with a broken-bat single to put runners on the corners. But Dexter Fowler hit a grounder to first base and Rizzo threw home to nail Goldschmidt. Hendricks then retired Wong and Harrison Bader to end the threat.

Chicago made it 4-1 in the seventh on an RBI single by Schwarber.

Gonzalez's solo blast in the eighth capped the scoring.

ROSTER MOVE

Before the game, the Cardinals recalled RHP Daniel Ponce de Leon from Triple-A Memphis and optioned RHP Ryan Helsley to Memphis.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Cardinals: C Yadier Molina (right thumb tendon strain) took batting practice Sunday and is expected to join the team in Miami on Monday. ''He continues to progress in a positive direction,'' manager Mike Shildt said. ''He'll take batting practice with us (Monday), then we'll evaluate from there.''

Cubs: LHP Xavier Cedeno (left wrist inflammation) began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa on Sunday and tossed a hitless inning with a walk and a strikeout.

UP NEXT

Cardinals: RHP Michael Wacha (3-2, 6.30 ERA) starts Monday night in the opener of a three-game series at Miami. RHP Sandy Alcantara (3-5, 3.80) pitches for the Marlins.

Cubs: RHP Yu Darvish (2-3, 4.88 ERA) takes the mound Monday night in the opener of a three-game series at Colorado. RHP German Marquez (6-3, 4.07) goes for the Rockies.

Moustakas home run earns fan new car as Brewers top Pirates
June 9, 2019
By The Associated Press

MILWAUKEE (AP) Mike Moustakas launched a homer that won a new car for a fan, NL MVP Christian Yelich hit his major-league leading 24th home run on his bobblehead day and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-2 Sunday for a three-game sweep.

Moustakas connected for his 20th homer off Francisco Liriano (1-1), a tiebreaking, two-run drive in the eighth inning that hit a promotional car perched above the right-center field fence. The Brewers said season ticketholder Mark Gruber was the fortunate fan. He'll get the keys to his new SUV in a pregame presentation on June 20.
