Sunday's Tip Sheet
January 6, 2018

The first Sunday of the New Year offers a full slate of college basketball betting action highlighted by a trio of night games featuring some of the best teams in the ACC, American Athletic and Pac-12 conferences. Everything gets underway at 6 p.m. (ET) with the first of two matchups on ESPNU.

No. 24 Florida State Seminoles at No. 15 Miami Hurricanes (ESPNU, 6 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Miami -3.5

Betting Matchup

Florida State kicked off play in the ACC with a tight 100-93 loss to Duke on Dec. 30 as an 11 ?-point road underdog and it earned a PUSH in Wednesday?s big 81-80 victory at home against North Carolina as a one-point favorite. This will be the Seminoles third-straight game against a ranked opponent in conference play with Louisville next up on the slate. They are 12-2 straight-up on the year with a 9-2-1 record against the spread. Florida has covered in its first three road games this year.

The Hurricanes made their way up the national polls with a SU 12-1 run through their first 13 games including a 67-53 victory against Pittsburgh in their ACC opener as 12 ?-point road favorites to close out the year. However, things did not go their way on Wednesday night in a stunning 64-54 loss to unranked Georgia Tech as five-point road favorites. Miami (7-5 ATS) had no answer for the Yellow Jackets? Josh Okogie, who burned its vaunted defense for 30 points.

Betting Trends

-- The Seminoles are 10-1 ATS in their last 11 Sunday games and they are 8-1 ATS in their last nine games following a SU win. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in six of their last seven conference games.

-- The Hurricanes have gone 6-14 ATS in their last 20 home games and they are 7-20-1 ATS in their last 28 games coming off a SU loss. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in six of their last seven Sunday games.

-- The underdog in this ACC clash is 6-2-1 ATS in the last nine meetings and the total has stayed UNDER in four of the last five meetings in Miami.

SMU Mustangs at No. 19 Cincinnati Bearcats (ESPN2, 6 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Cincinnati -7.5

Betting Matchup

SMU knocked off Central Florida and South Florida at home to begin AAC play as part of a straight-up five-game winning streak to close out 2017, but in its first game of the New Year on Thursday night it came up short in a 73-70 road loss to Tulane as nine-point favorites. The Mustangs are now 12-4 SU with an even 5-5-1 record against the spread. The total has gone OVER in three of their last five games. This was the just the second time SMU allowed more than 69 points this season.

Cincinnati has established itself as the early frontrunner in the AAC along with Wichita State at 13-2 SU and it opened conference play with victories against Memphis at home and Temple on the road. The Bearcats had their hands full with the Owls in Thursday?s 55-53 squeaker with Jacob Evans III hitting the game winner with less than a second to play. Cincinnati failed to cover as a 7 ?-point favorite against Temple to fall to an even 7-7 ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in nine of those 14 games.

Betting Trends

-- The Mustangs are 5-2-1 ATS in their last eight games following a SU loss and they have gone 5-0-1 ATS in their last six games on Sunday. The total has gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in nine of their last 11 conference games.

-- The Bearcats have gone 5-2 ATS in their last home seven games against a team with a SU losing record on the road and they have gone 9-3 ATS in their last 12 home games overall. The total has stayed UNDER in seven of their last nine games following a SU win.

-- The home team has won eight of the last nine meetings SU with SMU holding a 3-0 edge ATS in the last three games. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in six of the nine games.

No. 4 Arizona State Sun Devils at Utah Utes (ESPNU, 8 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Arizona State -2.5

Betting Matchup

Arizona State?s perfect 12-0 SU run through nonconference play while going a profitable 9-2-1 ATS has been severely tainted with back-to-back road losses to Arizona and Colorado to begin play in the Pac-12. The Sun Devils closed as six-point underdogs in an 84-78 loss to the rival Wildcats in a PUSH and they went on to lose to the Rams on Thursday night by nine points in overtime as nine-point favorites. Arizona State is the sixth-highest scoring team in the nation with 90.0 points per game, but it is allowing an average of 73.9 points on defense.

Utah (10-4 SU, 7-5 ATS) started conference play with back-to-back road victories against Oregon as a 9 ?-point underdog and Oregon State in a game that closed as a PICK. On Thursday night at home, the Utes had no answer for Arizona in a 94-82 loss as 3 ?-point underdogs. The total went OVER 142 points in that game after staying UNDER in their previous five outings. Utah runs five deep in players putting up at least 10 points a game as part of its 76.1-point scoring average.

Betting Trends

-- The Sun Devils have gone 12-3-1 ATS in their last 16 games coming off a SU loss and they are 6-1-1 ATS in their last eight games against a SU winning team. The total has gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in six of their last seven Sunday games.

-- The Utes are 5-2 ATS in their last seven home games and the total has gone OVER in three of their last five home games against a team with a SU losing record on the road. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in nine of their last 10 games on Sunday.

-- Head-to-head in this Pac-12 tilt, the favorite has covered in the last five meetings and the total has stayed UNDER in four of the last five meetings in Utah.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Odds to win the 2018 Masters:

15-2? Jordan Spieth

10-1? Dustin Johnson

12-1? Rory McIlroy

15-1? Thomas, Fowler, Woods

18-1? Day, Rahm, Rose

25-1? Koepka, Matsuyama

**********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

13) Titans 22, Chiefs 21? Kansas City is first NFL team to lose a playoff game after leading by 18+ points at halftime- they?re 1-11 in their last 12 playoff games, losing last six home playoff tilts. QB Alex Smith will likely be elsewhere next season.

12) Falcons 26, Rams 13? Any NFL team that is -2 or worse in turnovers stands less than a 20% chance of winning that game; against playoff-caliber teams, a lot lower %age. Rams turned ball over twice on special teams, had zero takeaways? cannot win that way.

11) Colorado 80, Arizona 77? On Selection Sunday the Buffaloes could be leaning heavily on this week, when they upset Arizona and ASU in Boulder. Colorado led here by 16 at the half- they start three freshmen. PG Wright had 16 points, 10 assists, 7 turnovers.

Quote of the Day, part 2, from Arizona coach Sean Miller:
?You always want your team to play for you as the coach, and our guys, they really struggle playing for me ? they really do. I can?t get them to play hard. We do it for a while. I know we?ve had a win streak and we also have a good team. We have a lot of talent. With our team, it?s really hard to get our guys to run as fast as they can. That?s not them. That?s me. I have a hard time reaching our guys. I can?t reach them, I really can?t.?

That doesn?t sound good.

10) Florida 77, Missouri 75? Mizzou was up a hoop when they fouled a Florida 3-point shooter with 0:21 left- the kid made 2 of 3 shots, tying the game. Mizzou then held for last shot, but a casual pass on the wing was stolen by Chiozza and he beat the buzzer with a walk-off layup, an awful loss for the homestanding Tigers.

9) NC State 96, Duke 85? Kevin Keatts gets his first ACC win in Wolfpack?s ACC home opener; all five State starters scored in double figures. Wolfpack bench outscored Duke?s 25-4.

Virginia 61, North Carolina 49? Tar Heels shot 25.8% inside arc, turned ball over 19 times (-8); they lost 53-43 here LY, and then won the national title five weeks later.

8) Bad Beat of the Night: Iowa State (+7.5) lost by 9 at Oklahoma State, 96-87 in overtime.

7) West Virginia 89, Oklahoma 76? Trae Young scored 28, but no other Sooner had more than 12? Young had 8 turnovers, only 5 assists.

6) Providence 81, Xavier 72? Friars even their Big East mark at 2-2; they were crushed 44-28 on boards, but Xavier was just 5-18 on arc.

5) LSU 69, Texas A&M 68- Kid on LSU nailed a 30-footer for the walk-off road win for Bayou Bengals, who are 10-4. Texas Aggies were 11-1, looked like best team in country in November, but thanks to injuries, suspensions, are now 0-3 in the SEC.

4) Tennessee 76, Kentucky 65? Wildcats were up 37-29 at half, but lost for 4th time in last five visits to Knoxville. Volunteers get their first win in three SEC games.

3) Wyoming 79, Boise State 78 OT? Broncos were up 16 at halftime, lose in OT, their first loss in four Mountain West games. Wyoming is 11-5 now.

2) Western Kentucky 112, Marshall 87? Freshman Anderson scored 16 points in 19:00 off the bench in his first college game after becoming eligible Friday.

1) Jacksonville State 64, Belmont 60? Upset in the Ohio Valley Conference; Murray State/Austin Peay are tied for first now.

Kent Bates-Diop, Ohio State stun No. 1 Michigan State
January 7, 2018

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Keita Bates-Diop scored a career-high 32 points, and Ohio State stunned No. 1 Michigan State 80-64 on Sunday.

The overachieving Buckeyes put together an electrifying 12-0 run to finish the first half and kept their foot on the gas to give first-year coach Chris Holtmann a signature win.

Ohio State (13-4, 4-0 Big Ten) won for its third straight in taking down the best team it is likely to see this season. The mistake-prone Spartans (15-2, 3-1) lost for the first time in the last 15 games, dating back to a seven-point loss to then-No. 1 Duke on Nov. 14.

The Spartans, who came in leading the nation with a 53.3 field-goal percentage, shot just 39 percent for the game and committed a dozen turnovers. Joshua Langford and Miles Bridges each scored 17 points.

Bates-Diop hit 12 of 21 attempts from the floor, including 2 of 4 from the 3-point line. His previous career high was 27 points against Iowa three days ago.

C.J. Jackson had 14 points for Ohio State, and Jae'Sean Tate added 13.

NO. 4 ARIZONA STATE 80, UTAH 77

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Shannon Evans scored 22 points, and Arizona State held on for a choppy win over Utah to end a two-game losing streak.

Mickey Mitchell hit two free throws with 21.7 seconds remaining after being fouled on a drive to give Utah a 79-77 lead. Justin Bibbins missed what could have been the game-winning 3-pointer with 6 seconds left.

Kodi Justice scored 20 points and carried the offensive load most of the night for Arizona State (13-2, 1-2 Pac-12), but Evans found a groove late, scoring 10 straight points down the stretch. Tra Holder, the league's leading scorer, added 11 points.

Bibbins had 22 points and six assists to lead the Utes (10-5, 2-2), who also lost to No. 14 Arizona on this homestand. Sedrick Barefield added 21.

NO. 9 WICHITA STATE 95, SOUTH FLORIDA 57

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - Shaquille Morris scored 15 points to lead a balanced scoring effort, and Wichita State blew out South Florida.

Zach Brown had 13 points, and Markis McDuffie scored 12 for Wichita State (13-2, 3-0 American Athletic Conference). Darral Willis scored 11 points.

Morris, Brown and McDuffie were a combined 16 of 19 from the floor, helping the Shockers shoot 62.7 percent.

Malik Martin led South Florida (7-10, 0-4) with 15 points. David Collins scored 12 points, and Terrence Samuel added 10 for the Bulls.

The Shockers had 48 points off the bench in their largest victory since beating Savannah State 112-66 on Nov. 12.

NO. 15 MIAMI 80, NO. 24 FLORIDA STATE 74

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) - Miami 5-foot-7 freshman Chris Lykes scored a season-high 18 points, and the Hurricanes withstood a late rally by the Seminoles.

Bruce Brown scored a season-high 23 points and Dewan Huell had 20 points and eight rebounds for the Hurricanes, who took the lead for good in the early minutes and made 13 of their first 14 shots.

Miami (13-2, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) won at home for the first time since Dec. 5. The Seminoles (12-3, 1-2) lost for the third time in their past six games.

Florida State cut a 16-point second-half deficit to four with 24 seconds left. Braian Angola then made a backcourt steal but missed a 3-pointer that would have left the Seminoles trailing by one.

Brown made five of six free throws in the final 45 seconds and finished 12-for-14 at the line.

Angola had 16 points for Florida State, which shot a season-low 36 percent.

NO. 19 CINCINNATI 76, SMU 56

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. (AP) - Jacob Evans III scored 18 points, and Gary Clark had a big second half as Cincinnati pulled away to beat SMU and extend the longest active home-court winning streak in the country.

The game matched the American Athletic Conference's top defensive teams, and it showed in the first half as they went a combined 15-for-52 from the field and the Bearcats led 34-20.

Cincinnati (14-2, 3-0) broke it open with a 12-point run late in the first half featuring Evans' 3-pointer. Clark scored 13 of his 18 points in the second half as the Bearcats finally got the ball inside and pushed the lead to 20.

SMU (12-5, 2-2) shot only 35.7 percent from the field and had 18 turnovers that set up 26 of Cincinnati's points. Jarrey Foster led the Mustangs with 16 points.

Tuesday?s 6-pack

? Stanford 77, USC 76? This game Sunday night ended when a kid on Stanford drained a half-court shot at the buzzer. It is a clip worth finding on the Interweb- quite an ending.

? Raptors 114, Nets 113 OT? Toronto is a very quiet 28-10.

? Vegas Golden Knights, an NHL expansion team, are 18-2-1 at home.

? Dustin Johnson almost got a hole-in-one on a 433-yard, par-4 hole Sunday

? Duquesne is a surprising 3-0 in Atlantic 14, with new coach Keith Dambrot, who was Lebron James? high school coach.

? Minnesota 127, Cleveland 99? Lebron was a career-worst minus-39.

*************************

Tuesday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??.

13) Alabama 26, Georgia 23 OT? Freshman QB Tua Tagovailoa was 35-53 passing this whole season, before this game. Alabama put him in to start second half, trailing 13-0- they looked dead, but Tagovailoa was 14-24/166 with three TD?s, including the game-winner in OT, as Alabama wins another national title, in highly dramatic fashion.

Jalen Hurts is 25-2 as Alabama?s QB, but he?ll never start another game? will he transfer?

12) Watching the ESPN Film Room on ESPN News, Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said: ?In bowl games, officials are going to let ?em play a little more. So if you have to hold, hold.? Kevin Sumlin agreed and said same thing also goes for defensive backs in pass coverage.

11) Gundy made another point just before halftime, saying how important it is for teams to have something positive happen right before the half. ?It really helps the mood in the locker room at halftime.? Halftimes are lot longer in college ball than the NFL.

10) Kevin Sumlin got fired by Texas A&M after this season; if he wants to go on TV next year, he will be very good. Good natured guy, gets points across quickly.

9) Gundy and Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald agreed that their teams are better off with their coordinators calling plays, rather than the head coach, who has to manage the administrative aspects of the program. They were saying playcallers study film ?for eight hours a day?.

8) 6.5 years ago, Georgia QB Jake Fromm played in the Little League World Series; now he was a QB in the national championship game as a freshman in college.

7) A gambler at South Point Casino in Las Vegas risked $557,500 to win $300,000, taking Alabama on the money line. No pointspread. Yikes.

I can?t even imagine what it must be like watching a game with half a million bucks riding on it. Especially this game!!!

6) Portent of the future? National anthem was played with Donald Trump on the field, but the players were in the locker room. Thats smart, avoiding any potential political displays or any other controversies that would take away from the game.

5) If Alabama played 14-0 Central Florida on a neutral field, they?d be a 13-point favorite.

4) In divisional round of NFL playoffs, #1-seeds are 16-5 against #6 seeds- the #6-seed won a road game the previous week, while the #1-seed had a bye.

3) When a 2-seed plays a 3-seed in this round, the 2-seed is 26-8- the bye really does help.

2) Since 2001, when the Patriots play at home in this round of playoffs, they?re 5-4-2 vs spread.

1) Chicago Bears hired Chiefs? OC Matt Nagy as their new head coach. Nagy played six years in the Arena League? he joins Jay Gruden as former AFL QB?s who are now NFL head coaches.

Tuesday's Tip Sheet
January 8, 2018

**Butler at Creighton**

-- Seton Hall is the only Big East team with an unbeaten record remaining in conference play. Creighton, with a 3-1 mark in league play, is in a second-place tie with Xavier, while Butler is in a fifth-place tie with a 2-2 record in Big East action.

-- Butler will make the trek West to Omaha on Tuesday night to face the Bluejays, who are undefeated in 10 home games with a 6-3 spread record at CenturyLink Center. Doug McDermott?s team won eight of its first nine home games by double-digit margins before knocking off St. John?s 78-71 as a 12-point ?chalk? this past Wednesday.

-- Creighton went to Capital One Arena in D.C. on Saturday and dealt out woodshed treatment to Georgetown in the form of a 90-66 clubbing as a 5.5-point road favorites. The Bluejays raced out to an 18-point halftime lead and coast into the win column. They drained 16-of-36 launches from 3-point range (44.4%) and had a 24/10 assists-to-turnovers ratio. Eleven different players scored and four were in double figures led by Toby Wegner, the senior forward who hit 5-of-8 treys in a 19-point effort. Davion Mintz buried 4-of-5 attempts from downtown and finished with 17 points and six assists without a turnover. Junior guard Khyri Thomas contributed 15 points, six rebounds and four assists, while Martin Kramelj had 12 points, 11 boards and a pair of steals.

-- As of early Monday night, most betting shop had Creighton (13-3 straight up, 9-6 against the spread) installed as a 7.5-point favorite.

-- Creighton is ranked third in the nation in scoring (90.2 points per game) and seventh in field-goal percentage (51.3%). Marcus Foster, who started his career at Kansas State before transferring, is averaging a team-best 18.8 PPG while shooting 43.3 percent from downtown. Foster is making 50.2 percent of his FG attempts and averages 3.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. He had scored in double figures in his team?s first 15 games before being held to a season-low nine points Saturday at Georgetown.

-- Thomas, the homegrown Omaha native who averaged 12.3 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game while starting all 35 games as a sophomore last season, is averaging 14.9 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.3 steals per game this year. Krampelj, the 6?9? sophomore from Slovenia, is averaging 12.7 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. He is shooting at a team-best 65.6 percent clip from the field.

-- Creighton is No. 31 in the RPI Rankings and 25th in the latest Associated Press poll. The Bluejays are 3-1 versus the Top 50 and 5-3 against the Top 100. They own quality home scalps over Providence, St. John?s and Nebraska, in addition to a win at Northwestern and a neutral-court triumph over UCLA. McDermott?s club lost at Seton Hall, at Gonzaga and vs. Baylor on a neutral floor.

-- Butler (12-5 SU, 8-8 ATS) has lost outright in two of its three road assignments while going 0-3 ATS. The Bulldogs are unranked in the AP but have an outstanding RPI of 23. There are 2-4 versus the Top 50 and 3-5 against the Top 100. Butler handed Villanova its only loss of the season in a 101-93 victory at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Dec. 30. The Bulldogs also have a home win over Utah and a neutral-court triumph over Ohio State. Their five defeats have come at Maryland, at Xavier, vs. both Purdue and Texas on neutral courts and a home loss to Seton Hall.

-- LaVall Jordan is the new head coach after Chris Holtmann left to take the Ohio State job. Jordan is 38-years-old and played for Butler in the late 1990s. In fact, Jordan is the player who missed a pair of free throws while his team held a one-point lead vs. Florida with about eight seconds remaining. Those missed set up Mike Miller?s epic buzzer beater that allowed the Gators to advance to the Round of 32 and eventually the national-title game in the 2000 NCAA Tournament. Jordan spent time on Todd Lickliter?s staff at Butler from 2003-2007 and more recently, he served under John Beilein at Michigan before taking his first-head coaching gig at UW-Milwaukee, where he went 11-24 in one season.

-- Jordan?s team lost a 90-87 decision to Seton Hall as a three-point home favorite Saturday. Butler allowed a 65-54 lead with less than 10 minutes remaining get away. Senior forward Kelan Martin scored a team-high 27 points before fouling out in the losing effort. Sophomore guard Kamar Baldwin finished with 14 points, six rebounds and five assists, while Henry Baddley had 14 points and three blocked shots in just 22 minutes of playing time from off the bench. Nate Fower was also in double figures with 11 points in 16 minutes of action in a reserve role.

-- Martin is averaging team-highs in scoring (19.8 PPG) and rebounding (6.5 RPG), while Baldwin (15.3 PPG, 4.9 RPG) is averaging team-bests in steals (1.8) and blocked shots (0.7 BPG). Paul Jorgensen, a junior who is a transfer from George Washington, is scoring at an 11.8 PPG clip while hitting 41.8 percent from 3-point land.

-- Butler has limped to a 1-4 record both SU and ATS in five games as an underdog.

-- Creighton won both meetings against Butler last year both SU and ATS, including a 75-64 win as a 5.5-point home ?chalk.?

-- The ?over? is 9-6 overall for the Bluejays, 5-4 in their home games. However, they?ve seen three consecutive ?unders? (regardless of the venue).

-- The ?over? hast hit in nine consecutive Butler games. The Bulldogs have seen the ?over? go 11-5 overall and 2-1 in their road contests.

-- The ?under? is 6-1 in the past seven head-to-head meetings between these Big East adversaries.

-- Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Eastern on Fox Sports 1.

**Purdue at Michigan**

-- Purdue (15-2 SU, 11-5 ATS) is atop the Big Ten standings in a first-place tie with Ohio State, as both schools have all won all four league games to date. Matt Painter?s team is 2-0 both SU and ATS in a pair of road games.

-- As of Monday night, most books had Purdue listed as a two-point road favorite.

-- Purdue hasn?t tasted defeat since losing back-to-back games on consecutive days (11/22 & 11/23) at the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas. Painter?s team lost a 78-75 decision to Tennessee in overtime before falling 77-73 to Western Kentucky. Since then, however, the Boilermakers have won 11 straight games while compiling a stellar 8-3 spread record.

-- Purdue had covered the number in four consecutive games until beating Nebraska 74-62 on Saturday as a 20.5-point home favorite. Vince Edwards was the catalyst with 21 points, 10 rebounds and six assists without a turnover. Isaac Haas added 14 points, six boards and two blocked shots, while Dakota Mathias finished with 11 points, four boards and four steals.

-- Purdue has been a single-digit favorite five times, producing a 4-1 record both SU and ATS.

-- Sophomore guard Carsen Edwards leads Purdue in scoring, averaging 16.8 points and 4.1 RPG. Haas averages 14.7 points and 5.4 RPG while shooting at a 64.3 percent rate from the field. Haas is second on the Boilermaker in blocked shots with 20. Senior forward Vince Edwards averages 14.1 points, 8.6 rebounds and 2.6 APG, while Mathias (13.3 PPG) averages 4.6 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game. Mathias has an outstanding 78/27 assists-to-turnover ratio and is draining 45.7 percent of his 3-balls. Redshirt freshman center Matt Haarms, a 7?3? center from Amsterdam, is averaging 5.9 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.0 blocked shots per game.

-- Purdue is ranked fifth in the latest AP rankings and 17th in the RPI. The Boilermakers are 5-1 against the Top 50 and 8-2 versus the Top 100. They own road wins at Marquette and at Maryland, in addition to neutral-court scalps of Arizona and Butler. They?ve won at home vs. Louisville, Northwestern, Lipscomb (RP #53) and Nebraska.

-- Michigan (14-3 SU, 9-6-1 ATS) is undefeated in nine home games with a 4-3 spread record.

-- Michigan has won seven games in a row since dropping its Big Ten opener at Ohio State (71-62) on Dec. 4. The Wolverines are off Saturday?s 79-69 win over Illinois as 10-point home ?chalk.? Moritz Wagner led a balanced offensive attack that saw five players score in double figures with 14 points. Wagner made 6-of-7 shots from the field, pulled down seven rebounds and blocked three shots. Duncan Robinson and Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahim scored 13 points apiece.

-- Beilein?s squad is No. 38 in the RPI, going 1-2 against the Top 50 and 3-3 versus the Top 100. Michigan has home wins over UCLA and Indiana, in addition to a win at Texas and a victory over VCU on a neutral court. The Wolverines lost to LSU at the Maui Classic and also fell at North Carolina and at Ohio State.

-- Charles Matthews, a transfer from Kentucky, is averaging a team-high 15.6 PPG for Michigan. Wagner is averaging 14.1 points and 7.2 RPG, while Abdur-Rahim is averaging 11.0 PPG and has a dynamite 59/10 assists-to-turnovers ratio.

-- The ?under? is 9-6 overall the Wolverines, 5-3 in their home contests. However, they?ve seen back-to-back ?under? and three in their last four games.

-- The ?over? is 9-7 overall for the Boilermakers, 1-1 in their road outings.

-- ESPN will have the telecast at 9:00 p.m. Eastern.

**B.E.?s Bonus Nuggets**

-- St. John?s Marcus LoVett averaged 14.9 points and 2.1 steals per game in the Red Storm?s first eight contests. Although he?s nearing a return from a knee injury, LoVett has been ruled ?out? for Tuesday?s game against Georgetown. Chris Mullin?s team was favored by 6.5 points Monday night.

-- Thirteen of 14 SEC schools are in the RPI Top 100. Only Vanderbilt at No. 142 is out of the Top 100, and Bryce Drew already has a pair of five-star recruits committed to the Commodores in the 2018 class. Ole Miss (#87) is the 13th school, while nine SEC teams are in the RPI Top 50. Kentucky (#9), Tennessee (#10), Auburn (#13) and Arkansas lead the way. However, Florida is atop the SEC standings with a 3-0 record in league play. Chris ?Cheese? Chiozza beat the buzzer again Saturday with his steal and run-out bucket with 0.1 seconds left to lift the Gators to a 77-75 win at Missouri.

-- Auburn is also unbeaten in SEC play, but it is only 2-0 and thus is one-half game back of UF. The Tigers can pull even atop those standings with a win Tuesday vs. Ole Miss. Bruce Pearl?s team was listed as a 9.5 or 10-point home favorite Monday night. AU is undefeated in eight home games with a 4-2 spread record, while the Rebels are 0-2 both SU and ATS on the road. This game will tip at 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPNU.

-- Boise State lost its first Mountain West Conference game Saturday night by a 79-78 count at Wyoming in overtime. Leon Rice?s team allowed a 16-point intermission lead to get away against the Cowboys, wasting a 27-point effort from star senior slasher Chandler Hutchison. BSU will be in bounce-back mode Tuesday night at Fresno State. As of Monday night, the Bulldogs were three-point home favorites against the Broncos, who have seen the ?over? go 5-0-1 in their six outings. This game will tip at 11:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPNU.

-- The CBS Sports Network will have tripleheader on Tuesday night: Rhode Island (-9) at Saint Louis (7:00 p.m. Eastern), Seton Hall (pick ?em) at Marquette (9:00) and San Jose State at San Diego State (-22 at 11:00).

TOP 25 THIS WEEK: No. 8 Texas Tech gets 2 top-10 opponents
January 9, 2018

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Texas Tech coach Chris Beard figures his Red Raiders haven't accomplished all that much yet, even with the eighth-ranked Red Raiders holding the program's highest ranking in two decades.

His team will get two chances to accomplish a lot more this week.

A week after upsetting Kansas on the road, Texas Tech has a pair of big matchups to headline the week ahead for AP Top 25 teams. First the Red Raiders visit No. 9 Oklahoma on Tuesday night, then they host No. 2 West Virginia on Saturday.

''We're the same program that's only been to one NCAA Tournament in the past decade,'' Beard said before his team's weekend win against Kansas State, adding: ''We've got a lot of guys who understand where we came from and where we're trying to get.''

Texas Tech (14-1, 3-0 Big 12) vaulted 10 spots in Monday's poll, earning its highest ranking since being a program-best No. 7 in March 1996.

Texas Tech ranks third nationally in KenPom's adjusted defensive efficiency (87.6 points per 100 possessions) through Sunday's games while leading the Big 12 by holding opponents to 37 percent shooting.

''To me, this race doesn't even start until February,'' Beard said of the Big 12. ''We're all just kind of jockeying for position right now. We're pleased we've gotten a couple of wins on the board, but we understand it's a long, long season and we really haven't done anything yet.''

TOUGH BIG 12: Oklahoma and freshman star Trae Young have their own pair of games against ranked Big 12 opponents. The Sooners (12-2, 2-1) follow the Texas Tech game by hosting No. 16 TCU on Saturday.

AT THE TOP: Villanova needed just a week to reclaim its lost No. 1 ranking in the AP Top 25. The Wildcats returned to the top after an upset-filled week that included losses by No. 1 Michigan State and No. 2 Duke .

The Wildcats got 52 of 65 first-place votes to move up from third to No. 1, where they spent three weeks in December. Villanova (14-1, 2-1 Big East) hosts No. 10 Xavier on Wednesday night.

MOUNTAINEERS ROLLING:
Second-ranked West Virginia (14-1, 3-0 Big 12) earned 12 first-place votes and secured the program's highest ranking since December 1959 during Jerry West's senior season. Coming off a win against Oklahoma , the Mountaineers host Baylor on Tuesday before visiting the Red Raiders on Saturday.

VIRGINIA'S CLIMB: Virginia climbed five spots to No. 3 and earned a first-place vote after an upset-filled week that saw six top-10 teams lose.

Zach Osterman of The Indianapolis Star was the voter with the Cavaliers topping his ballot after their weekend win against reigning national champion North Carolina . He called it ''one of the more difficult ballots I've thrown together'' with so much upheaval at the top, though he pointed to Virginia's resume featuring a lone loss to West Virginia.

''I think the way they play basketball produces results,'' Osterman said of the Cavaliers. ''I've been high on them for a while. Some other people losing around them this week meant in my eyes they moved up.''

Virginia (14-1, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) faces Syracuse on Tuesday then hosts North Carolina State - which has upset wins against Arizona and Duke when both were ranked No. 2 this season - on Sunday.

OTHER RANKED MATCHUPS: Saturday brings two other matchups of ranked teams: Xavier against No. 25 Creighton in the Big East and No. 18 Miami against No. 19 Clemson in the ACC.

WATCH LIST: Notre Dame is in flux with star Bonzie Colson sidelined with an injury , but the Fighting Irish lead all unranked teams in voting and get a Saturday home game against UNC to help their odds of getting back in the poll this week.

Meanwhile, Texas A&M - which went from No. 11 last week to unranked after two Southeastern Conference losses - will have get two chances to make it a short absence from the poll. The Aggies visit No. 21 Kentucky on Tuesday, then travel to No. 24 Tennessee on Saturday.

No. 2 West Virginia escapes with 57-54 win over Baylor
January 9, 2018

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) Jevon Carter sank the go-ahead 3-pointer with 57.5 seconds left and No. 2 West Virginia escaped with a 57-54 victory over Baylor on Tuesday night.

West Virginia (15-1, 4-0 Big 12) struggled to make shots the entire game but extended the nation's longest winning streak to 15, the Mountaineers' best since winning 22 straight in 1988-89.

Lamont West and Daxter Miles Jr. led West Virginia with 12 points apiece.

Baylor's Manu Lecomte scored 13 points and Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. had 11 points and 10 rebounds for his eighth double-double of the season.

West Virginia, which had little inside success on offense against the taller Bears (11-5, 1-3), shot 31.1 percent (19 of 61) from the floor and was held to its lowest point total of the season.

But the Mountaineers never trailed in the second half of a close game with few scoring runs. Baylor made one field goal over the final eight minutes.

No. 3 VIRGINIA 68, SYRACUSE 61

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - Kyle Guy scored 22 points, De'Andre Hunter added 15 and Virginia beat Syracuse.

Guy made five 3-pointers for Virginia (15-1, 4-0 Atlantic Coast Conference). The Cavaliers attempted a season-high 27 3s and made nine. Devon Hall added 13 points, eight assists and seven rebounds for Virginia.

Frank Howard scored 18 points to lead the Orange (12-5, 1-3). Oshae Brissett added 16 points and Paschal Chukwu scored nine points and grabbed 16 rebounds, but the Orange shot under 40 percent against the nation's top scoring defense and managed just three assists on 23 baskets.

No. 5 PURDUE 70, MICHIGAN 69

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Isaac Haas made a tiebreaking free throw with four seconds remaining and Purdue remained unbeaten in the Big Ten by edging Michigan.

The Boilermakers (16-2, 5-0 Big Ten) have won 12 in a row, while the Wolverines (14-4, 3-2) had their seven-game winning streak snapped. Purdue is 5-0 in conference play for the first time since 1989-90.

In the final seconds, Michigan rushed the ball up the court and Charles Matthews took a desperation shot just after crossing midcourt that hit the rim but missed.

No. 9 OKLAHOMA 75, NO. 8 TEXAS TECH 65

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) - Trae Young scored 22 of his 27 points in the second half to help Oklahoma top Texas Tech.

Young, a freshman point guard who leads the nation in scoring and assists, shot just 1 of 12 in the first half. He went 6 for 11 in the second to help the Sooners bounce back from a loss to No. 2 West Virginia on Saturday.

Young also had nine assists and four steals for Oklahoma (13-2, 3-1 Big 12), which won its 11th straight at home. Christian James had 15 points and Khadeem Lattin added 11 points, eight rebounds and seven blocks.

Oklahoma shot 56 percent in the second half. Texas Tech entered the night ranked fourth in the nation in scoring defense, allowing 59 points per game.

Keenan Evans scored 19 points for Texas Tech (14-2, 3-1).

No. 12 KANSAS 83, IOWA STATE 78

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - Malik Newman scored a career-high 27 points, Svi Mykhailiuk added 23 and Kansas staved off an upset bid by Iowa State, pulling away in the closing minutes.

Devonte Graham added 11 points for the Jayhawks (13-3, 3-1 Big 12), most of those coming in crunch time, when he shook off a 1-for-11 start from the field to knock down three big jumpers.

Lindell Wigginton had 27 points and Donovan Jackson scored 20 for the Cyclones (9-6, 0-4), whose four straight losses - including back-to-back overtime defeats - have come on the heels of nine straight wins.

Cameron Lard added 15 points and 10 rebounds, though he also committed seven of the Cyclones' 17 turnovers. Nick Weiler-Babb contributed 13 points, 10 boards and eight assists.

MARQUETTE 84, No. 13 SETON HALL 64

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Andrew Rowsey scored 31 points and Marquette used a 16-0 run in the second half to pull away from Seton Hall.

Sam Hauser added 14 points for the Golden Eagles (12-5, 3-2 Big East). He shot 4 of 9 from 3-point range, including a 3 with 5:25 left for a 73-55 lead.

Energized Marquette outhustled Seton Hall (14-3, 3-1) and held its own in the paint against the Pirates' dominant center, Angel Delgado (12 points, 10 rebounds). The Golden Eagles set a quick tempo to beat the Pirates on both ends of the floor.

Seton Hall stumbled after reaching its highest ranking in the AP Top 25 poll since Jan. 2, 2001.

No. 20 NORTH CAROLINA 96, BOSTON COLLEGE 66

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - Luke Maye had career highs of 32 points and 18 rebounds, and North Carolina's small lineup got off to a fast start in an easy win against Boston College.

Cameron Johnson added 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Tar Heels (13-4, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), who avoided their first three-game losing streak since January 2014. UNC coach Roy Williams juggled his starting lineup to move in Johnson over freshman forward Garrison Brooks - and that wing-heavy unit responded by getting out in transition and on the attack in their active opening minutes.

Maye became the first North Carolina player with at least 30 points and 15 rebounds at home since Antawn Jamison in 1997-98, according to ESPN Stats & Info.

Ky Bowman scored 21 points to lead Boston College (11-6, 2-3), which has lost 11 straight against the Tar Heels.

No. 21 KENTUCKY 74, TEXAS A&M 73

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - PJ Washington made a steal that led to Kevin Knox's go-ahead layup with 2:28 left, then added four points down the stretch to help Kentucky rally past Texas A&M.

Trailing 59-53 with 8:43 remaining, the Wildcats clawed back to tie the game three times before Washington stole a high pass and fed Knox for a 69-67 lead. Washington added a layup between two free throws for a 73-69 edge.

The Aggies weren't done, taking advantage of missed Kentucky free throws to get within a point with four seconds left on Robert Williams' tip-in. Two misses by Washington at the line set up a final chance for Texas A&M, but a long pass sailed out of bounds as time expired.

Hamidou Diallo had 18 points as Kentucky (13-3, 3-1 Southeastern Conference) bounced back from last weekend's loss at No. 24 Tennessee.

Tyler Davis scored 21 for the Aggies (11-5, 0-4), who lost their second consecutive one-point game.

No. 22 AUBURN 85, MISSISSIPPI 70

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - Desean Murray had 16 points and eight rebounds to help Auburn erase a 10-point halftime deficit and beat Mississippi.

Auburn (15-1, 3-0 Southeastern Conference) won its 13th straight game and opened 3-0 in conference play for the first time since 2002-03. The Tigers had lost 10 straight against Ole Miss.

Mustapha Heron added 15 points for Auburn, which played its first home game as a ranked team since 2000. Afernee McLemore had 13 points and nine rebounds.

Breein Tyree led the Rebels (9-7, 2-2) with 24 points.

No. 24 TENNESSEE 92, VANDERBILT 84

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Grant Williams scored a career-best 37 points as Tennessee rallied from a 10-point deficit in the second half to beat Vanderbilt.

The sophomore forward avoided foul trouble, and Vanderbilt couldn't handle the 6-foot-7, 241-pound Williams around the basket. Admiral Schofield tied his career high with 22 points as Tennessee (11-4, 2-2 Southeastern Conference) won its second straight.

Jordan Bowden scored all 12 of his points in the second half for the Volunteers.

Saben Lee led Vanderbilt with 21 points. Jeff Roberson added 19 and Riley LaChance had 16 for the Commodores (6-10, 1-3).

No. 25 CREIGHTON 85, BUTLER 74

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Marcus Foster scored 21 of his 23 points in the first half, and Martin Krampelj had 14 points and 14 rebounds for his third straight double-double in Creighton's victory over Butler.

The Bluejays (14-3, 4-1 Big East) won for the ninth time in 10 games and improved to 11-0 at home. The Bulldogs (12-6, 2-3) lost their third straight since upsetting then-No. 1 Villanova on Dec. 30.

Foster was coming off a season-low nine points on 3-of-14 shooting at Georgetown on Saturday. He took on the role of playmaker in the second half, when he had six of his season-high eight assists, including a couple big ones after Butler pulled within six points late.

Butler star Kelan Martin struggled with Khyri Thomas guarding him. After averaging 25.8 points in the Bulldogs' first four Big East games, Martin was held to two in the first half and 10 for the game. He did have 11 rebounds.

Wednesday?s 6-pack

? Kansas 83, Iowa State 78? 41.7% of Jayhawks? shots are 3?s, way up from previous years.

? Purdue 70, Michigan 69? Wolverines didn?t score over last 2:51 of game.

? Georgetown 69, St John?s 66? Johnnies are now 0-5 in the Big East.

? West Virginia 57, Baylor 54? WVU won despite shooting 9-36 INSIDE the arc.

? Kentucky 74, Texas A&M 73? Aggies were 14-24 on foul line, are 0-4 in SEC

? Boise State 70, Fresno State 64? Are Broncos the best team in Mountain West?

*********************

Wednesday?s List of 13: Mid-week musings??.

13) Monday night was a COLLEGE football game, not the NFL. ESPN sucks for interviewing Jalen Hurts after the game- they were probably hoping he would pout, but the kid is all class.

Have you ever even seen an NFL QB who was benched interviewed after a game when his sub came in and won the game? Ever? What was the point?

12) Second half of the national title game is played with two freshman QB?s; that defies logic.

11) Four of the last five national champs in college football trailed by 10+ points in 4th quarter of the championship game.

10) Kudos to the Clippers? DeAndre Jordan, who is 26 for his last 33 on the foul line. Working on your game pays off? teams will stop fouling him on purpose soon.

9) Clippers? Lou Williams is #2 in NBA in 4th quarter scoring; Clippers are his 5th team in the last five years. I remember seeing him play AAU ball in Orlando back when I used to go down there every July to see games. Seems like long time ago but it was 2004, not that long ago.

8) Patriots could?ve had the #4 pick in April?s draft if they had traded Jimmy Garoppolo to the Browns instead of San Francisco. Cleveland was willing to trade Houston?s pick to get a QB, but New England obviously wanted to ship him out of the AFC, and in fairness, Houston was 3-4 at the time of the trade- no one knew the pick wound wind up being #4.

7) Someone voted Duke 20th in the college basketball poll this week; I?d be curious who he thinks the 19 teams are who are better than Duke.

6) Football coaching carousel:
? Former Tennessee coach Derek Dooley is the new OC at Missouri
? Teryl Austin is still a defensive coordinator, only now in Cincinnati, not Detroit
? Rams? QB coach Greg Olson is the Oakland Raiders? new OC- he gets a 4-year deal.
? Carolina Panthers fired OC Mike Shula, QB coach Ken Dorsey

5) Unusual Fact of the Day: 1972 Miami Dolphins went 17-0, but starting QB Bob Greise started only six of the 17 games, and only one playoff game- the Super Bowl. When Miami won 14-7 in the Super Bowl, Greise threw only 11 passes the whole game. Football was different then. Backup QB for Miami back then was Earl Morrall, who also started Super Bowl III for the Colts.

4) Toronto Blue Jays were the oldest team in the major leagues last season.

3) Missouri football gets important, good news; QB Drew Lock will be back next season. He is very good.

2) Alabama?s football coaches banked a total of $1.27M in bonuses for winning the national title; Nick Saban gets a $100K bonus, but DC Jeremy Pruitt got the biggest one- $234K. Pruitt is now off to be the new head coach at Tennessee.

1) One of the interesting things about our country is how different sports are lot more popular in various areas of the country; New York ranked #52 out of 56 markets in ratings for the college football national title game Monday night. No one on NYC talk radio talks about college football recruiting, ever, not even on Signing Day.

You watch the Paul Finebaum Show on SEC Network and people in the south are discussing Ole Miss? nickel defense on weekday afternoons in April. I?m not judging, just noting the diversity our country has makes it a more interesting place.
