Sunday?s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

13) Non-basketball note, but a great one: A young man from Central Florida did 20 reps on the bench press at the NFL Combine Saturday, using a prosthetic left hand- the young man has no left hand. Kudos to Shaquem Griffin, one determined dude. Hope you make it in the NFL.

12) Tennessee 66, Georgia 61? Vols were picked 13th in SEC preseason poll; there are 14 teams in the SEC. Instead, Tennessee tied Auburn for the regular season title, with only one senior in the Vols? 10-man rotation.

11) Hawai?i 68, Cal-State Fullerton 60? This game was delayed for an extra half hour at the half, because a bracket on top of one of the backboards broke, and the school had no replacement.

After consulting with the Big West head of officials, it was decided to lower the baskets that hang from the ceiling (like high school backboards) and play the second half with those baskets, instead of the usual portable backboards. Very unusual.

Shot clocks were on the floor in the corners, the way they were in the NBA 40 years ago.

10) Illinois State 76, Southern Illinois 68 OT? Exciting game in semifinals of Arch Madness in St Louis; Redbirds play top-seeded Loyola in the championship game Sunday.

No one pays to watch the referees: In first half of this game, after a whistle, a ref calls a taunting technical on an Illinois State player; the replay showed he said something to an opponent as they passed each other after the whistle. No physical contact, just quiet talk. LET IT GO!!!

Before that could be sorted out, a second SIU player says something in passing to the Illinois State player who got the T, and a second referee gives HIM a technical. So now we have offsetting technical fouls, when nothing should?ve been called in the first place.

Problem for Illinois State was that the technical on their guy was also his third personal foul, and this was still in the first half. He eventually fouled out in overtime.

9) Miami 69, Virginia Tech 68? Hurricanes won their last four games, by a total of 8 points.

8) Xavier 65, DePaul 62? Musketeers win Big East regular season title, first team other than Villanova to do that since the league re-organized.

7) Upsets of the Day:
Little Rock (+20.5) 72, UL-Lafayette 61 OT
Cleveland State (+13.5) 89, Northern Kentucky 80
Marshall (+11) 76, Middle Tennessee 67
Stanford (+8.5) 84, Arizona State 83
Arkansas State (+7) 83, UL-Monroe 79
Texas-El Paso (+6.5) 68, North Texas 66
Hawai?i (+6.5) 68, Cal State-Fullerton 60
Michigan (+5) 75, Michigan State 64
Texas (+5) 87, West Virginia 79 OT
Oklahoma State (+4.5) 82, Kansas 64

6) Texas-El Paso 68, North Texas 66? Mean Green were improved this year; they finish 8-10 in Conference USA, after being 9-27 the last two years? 11 of their 18 conference games this season were decided by 4 or fewer points, or in OT.

5) Stanford 84, Arizona State 83? Sun Devils were 12-0 on Christmas, a top 10 team; they then went 8-10 in the Pac-12, going 3-9 in games decided by 7 or fewer points, or in OT. ASU will be a really tough team to handicap in the NCAAs; I?m assuming they?re going to make it.

4) NC State 76, Louisville 69? Louisville-Florida State is the 8-9 game in the ACC tournament, with both teams going 9-9 in ACC play. Could it be a play-in game?

3) Duke 74, North Carolina 64? Duke outscored Tar Heels 49-29 in second half; they took 20 foul shots (9-20), Carolina took five (4-5). My quick math says Blue Devils were 7-15 on arc in the second half. Teams could meet again next weekend in Brooklyn.

2) Murray State 68, Belmont 51? First bid in the Field of 68 goes to the Racers; over last five years, five different teams have won the OVC tournament.

1? Cleveland State 89, Northern Kentucky 80? Top seed in Horizon goes down in the biggest upset of the day. Norse had beaten Cleveland State by 17-15 points in two meetings during the regular season, but those games don?t matter nearly as much as this one did.

Sunday's Early Tips
March 3, 2018

The American Athletic Conference (AAC) wraps up its regular season schedule this Sunday ahead of next week?s conference tournament.

One of the featured matchups of the day on the entire college basketball schedule pits the top two teams in the AAC against one another with the regular season title on the line.

No. 10 Cincinnati at No. 11 Wichita State (CBS, 12:00 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Wichita State -1 ?, Total 143 ?

Betting Matchup

With Thursday?s 78-49 romp against Tulane as 13-point road favorites, the Bearcats moved one step closer to locking up this season?s AAC regular season title at 15-2 straight. They are 26-4 SU on the year with a 17-12 record against the spread. The total stayed UNDER 138 points in that latest win and it has stayed UNDER in three of their last five outings. Cincinnati is 7-1 SU on the road this season in conference play with a 5-3 record ATS.

The Bearcats are ranked second in the nation in points allowed (57.2) and they have held opposing teams below this average in five of their last eight games. At the other end of the court, they are averaging 76.1 points per game behind four different players scoring at least 11 points per game. Junior guard Jacob Evans leads the team in scoring with 13.3 points a game while connecting on 40.9 percent of his shots from three-point range.

The Shockers kept their bid alive for an AAC title in their first season in the conference with Thursday?s thrilling 75-71 overtime victory against Central Florida. This extended their current SU winning streak to seven games, but after failing to cover as 10-point road favorites they sunk to 1-4 ATS in their last five outings. The total has gone OVER in Wichita State?s last 10 games. Returning home for the season finale, it has gone 7-1 SU at home in the AAC with a 5-3 record ATS.

Wichita State is one game back at 14-3 SU in the AAC standings, but it owns the tiebreaker for the regular season title with a 76-72 victory against the Bearcats on Feb. 18 as a six-point road underdog. The total went OVER the closing 141-point line in that game. The Shockers have the more potent offensive attack in this matchup with an average of 83.9 PPG. Both Larry Shamet and Shaquille Morris are averaging over 14 PPG and these two combined for 32 points in the first meeting this year.

Betting Trends

-- The Bearcats have gone 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games against a team with a SU winning record and the total has gone OVER in their last four Sunday games.

-- The Shockers are 1-4 ATS in their last five games following a SU win and the total has gone OVER in their last seven home games.

Connecticut at No. 25 Houston (CBSSN, 4:00 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Houston -15 ?, Total 141 ?

Betting Matchup

The Huskies stunned Temple 72-66 on Wednesday night as 2 ?-point home underdogs to improve to 7-10 both SU and ATS in conference play. This was only their third SU win in their last 10 games and just the second time they covered ATS in this same span. The total stayed UNDER 139 points in that game after going OVER in seven of their previous nine outings. Connecticut has lost six of eight road games both SU and ATS in conference play with the total going OVER in five of those eight games on the road.

Junior guard Jalen Adams had the hot hand on Wednesday night with 25 points and eight assists. He has led the Huskies in scoring all season long with an average of 18.4 PPG and this was his third straight game with at least 25 points. He is one of three players averaging at 14 PPG or more. Overall, Connecticut is well down the list in Division I in scoring with an average of 67.9 points, but it has scored at least 71 points in five of its last six games. At the other end of the court, it is allowing an average of 72.6 PPG.

Houston is the third nationally-ranked team in the AAC at 23-6 SU with a 13-4 record in conference play. The Cougars have gone 7-1 SU in their last eight games with a 6-1-1 record ATS. The total stayed UNDER 133 ? points in Wednesday?s 69-56 road victory against SMU and it has stayed UNDER in five of their last seven games. Houston is a perfect 8-0 SU at home this season including victories against Wichita State and Cincinnati while going 6-1-1 ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in six of those eight home games.

With an average of 17.7 points and 4.7 assists, senior guard Rob Grey has led Houston in both categories this season. He put up 19 points and nine assists against SMU as part of a combined 68 points and 27 assists in his last three games. The Cougars are averaging 78.1 PPG and they are shooting 46.8 percent from the field and 39.1 percent from three-point range. They have been one of the better defensive teams in the nation this season with a points-allowed average of 65.0.

Betting Trends

-- The Huskies have failed to cover in their last five Sunday games and the total has gone OVER in the last four games played on a Sunday.

-- The Cougars are 4-1 ATS in their last five games against a team with a SU losing record and the total has stayed UNDER in six of their last seven Sunday games.

-- The road team in this conference matchup has covered the spread in the last five meetings and the total has gone OVER in four of the last five meetings in Houston.

Sunday's AAC Top Wager
March 3, 2018

Cincinnati Bearcats vs. Wichita State Shockers

Two of the top teams in the country meet on Sunday on CBS, as the No. 10 Cincinnati Bearcats visit the No. 11 Wichita Shockers. This game will almost assuredly decide the regular season American Athletic Conference title.

If the teams end up tied for the title, Wichita State would win the tiebreaker because of a sweep of Cincinnati during the regular season and the Shockers would get the No. 1 seed in next week?s AAC tournament. The Shockers won 76-72 in Cincinnati earlier this season.

Let?s look at this marquee matchup on Sunday and NCAA basketball picks.

Date and Time: Sunday, March 4, 2018, 12:00 p.m. ET
Location: Charles Koch Arena, Wichita, KS
Odds Wichita State -1.5, Total 143.5
TV Coverage: CBS

What does a Cincinnati team have to do to get some respect? All they do is win games, as they are 55-10 over the last two seasons. They have just been a so-so bet on the road this season, as before Thursday?s game at Tulane they were 4-4-1 ATS. Cincinnati has the top scoring margin in the country, as they average about 76 points per game and give up just 57 per contest.

Cincinnati head coach Mick Cronin said on Cincinnati.com that winning the regular season conference title doesn?t mean as much as it used to. "Unfortunately, any regular-season conference championship in college basketball doesn't mean what it did when I was growing up," Cronin said. "We all know, in our game, all people really care about is March Madness. But I will tell you it's hard to do." Cincinnati has not won an outright league title since 2004 when they were in Conference USA. "I know (senior forwards) Gary (Clark) and Kyle (Washington) care about it, so it'd be great for us," Cronin said. "Obviously there's a lot more basketball to be played. Whether we win Thursday and clinch a share, you're still trying to point toward March and get better. But it's a great accomplishment."

Wichita State has not been a great bet at home this season, as they are just 6-7 ATS. They score plenty of points, as they average about 84 per game, while giving up 71 per contest. This is the first season for Wichita State in the AAC, as they previously were in the Missouri Valley Conference. It would be quite a coup to win the AAC title in their debut season.

?I knew we would have to be really good,? head coach Gregg Marshall said. ?I expected us to lose a couple games, which is what we?ve done. I didn?t know which ones, I didn?t predict any of that. In the end, we?re in this last week and we?re fighting for a regular-season championship. If we win the two games, that?s what we get ? we get a No. 1 seed (in the conference tournament) in our first year.

Key Stat

The Bearcats had gone over the total in two of their last three games before Thursday?s game at Tulane. Wichita State has been an ?over? machine, as they had gone over the total in nine straight games before their game on Thursday against Central Florida. The first time the Bearcats and Shockers met it was the Shockers winning 76-72 in a game that had no problem clearing the total of 141. The total for Sunday?s contest should be higher, probably somewhere in the mid 140?s.

Cincinnati vs. Wichita State Predictions

This is definitely a game to keep an eye on, not only for which team wins the AAC title, but which team is a serious NCAA Tourney contender. Cincinnati does virtually everything right, as they score plenty of points and play tough defense.

Wichita State has the offense, but sometimes they can be a bit slack on defense. I lean toward Cincinnati in this game, as I think they are the better overall team and I also like the contest to go over the total.

Cincinnati vs. Wichita State ATS Pick: Bearcats (+1.5) and Over (143.5)

Cincinnati vs. Wichita State Score Prediction: Cincinnati 78, Wichita State 75

Sunday College Basketball Best Bet
Cincinnati Bearcats at Wichita State Shockers

While there are a few conference tournament championship games on Sunday, it's a battle for regular season supremacy that's got me intrigued as the Bearcats and Shockers meet for the second and final time this regular season.

Wichita State took the first meeting 76-72 in Cincinnati as 6-point road underdogs, and with a win on their home court on Sunday they'll be tied with the Bearcats atop the AAC standings but will own the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Those kind of stakes mean we should see a playoff-type atmosphere in this game as it should be a great season-finale contest in the AAC.

Odds: Wichita State -1.5, Total 143.5

If Cincinnati wants to maintain their top spot, win the conference title and earn a season split with Wichita State, they'll have to improve drastically on defense compared to the first meeting. Wichita State shot 52.9% from the field in that first meeting, went 8-for-18 from 3-point land, and hit one fewer free throw then the Bearcats in the four-point win. All in all it was a disastrous performance defensively for the Bearcats, but thankfully there is plenty of good news in that regard for the return meeting.

Improving on defense shouldn't be too hard for a Cincinnati team that enters the weekend 2nd in the country in terms of FG percentage allowed (36.9%). The Bearcats have relied on their strong defensive play all year long and the 57.2 points allowed per game ranks 2nd in the country as well.

The loss to the Shockers earlier this year was more of an outlier than the norm for this Bearcats defense, and given what's on the line for both teams here, look for that Cincinnati defense to step up and have one of their better outings of the year.

Wichita State would prefer to push the pace when they can, but they've got to know that Cincinnati will look to bog this game down every chance they get. The Shockers aren't likely to shoot 50+% again against the #2 ranked defense in the land, so Wichita is going to have to rely on their own defense to hold down the fort as well. That unit could have done better in Cincinnati too, as the Bearcats shot 48.1% from the field themselves, and considering Cincinnati averages just 45.8% from the floor on the whole.

Cincinnati really is an average offensive team, and the Bearcats flaws on that end of the court do tend to show up in big games. Cincinnati's two losses in conference play came against this Shockers team and the Houston Cougars - #2 and #3 in AAC standings ? and when the Bearcats are out in hostile territory it's almost always the defense that leads them to success rather than the offense lighting it up.

So with that in mind and this game likely too close to call, I'm looking at this total as being a shade too high for this contest given the magnitude of the situation and defensive skill on the floor. Yes, the first game went 'over' the number, but even with those tremendous shooting percentages form both sides, it still was only seven points above the closing total of 141. Drop both teams shooting percentages dramatically here, even to just their season averages, and this total will have a tough time being reached.

Outside of their road game @ Houston (which did cash an 'under' ticket by the way), the Bearcats have allowed 49, 51, 57, 48, 38, 55, and 53 points in all of their conference road games this year. Even Houston only managed 67 points in a home win over the Bearcats in a game that stayed 'under' the total after the first meeting in Cincinnati easily surpassed the total. Sound familiar?

If the Bearcats are able to keep that trend going of holding AAC opponents to less than 60 points on their own floor, I don't see how this game sails 'over' the number without an overtime period or two. That's always going to be a concern given the battle these two could find themselves in, but with Wichita State's 10-0 O/U run currently propping up this total a bit higher than it should be, I've got no problem going the other way in a defensive-minded, tournament-type atmosphere, slugfest game between these two.

Best Bet: Under 143.5

No. 3 Purdue vs. No. 5 Michigan (CBS, 4:30 p.m. ET)

The Wolverines are seeking their second consecutive Big 10 tournament title after knocking off rival Michigan State on Saturday, 75-64 as 5.5-point underdogs. Michigan has won eight straight games and 13 of the past 16 contests since getting squeezed by Purdue at home on January 9 by one point, 70-69. The Wolverines dropped both matchups with the Boilermakers this season, including a 92-88 setback in West Lafayette as 11-point 'dogs in late January.

The Boilermakers pulled away from Penn State on Saturday, 78-70, but Purdue failed to cash for the second straight game in the Big 10 tournament as it closed as 8.5-point favorites. Matt Painter's team dropped to 1-10-1 ATS the last 12 games overall as all 10 ATS defeats came as a favorite of 8.5 points or more. Purdue lost to Michigan in the Big 10 tourney last season in overtime, 74-70, as the Boilermakers are seeking their first tournament championship since 2009.

No. 15 MICHIGAN 75, No. 2 MICHIGAN STATE 64

NEW YORK (AP) - Mo Wagner scored 14 of his 15 points after a dreadful first half and fifth-seeded Michigan moved within a game of its second straight Big Ten Tournament title.

Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman and Zavier Simpson also had 15 for the Wolverines (27-7), who were also the last team to beat Michigan State (29-4), when they did it on Jan. 13.

Miles Bridges had 17 points to lead Michigan State, which had a 13-game winning streak snapped.

---

No. 3 XAVIER 65, DePAUL 62

CHICAGO (AP) - Trevon Bluiett scored 22 points, and Xavier set a school record for regular-season wins while clinching the top seed in the Big East.

The Musketeers (27-4, 15-3) hung on for their 12th win in 13 games. That ended Villanova's four-year run of first-place finishes.

Bluiett became the school's all-time leader in 3-pointers, making four to give him 310 in his career.

Brandon Cyrus led DePaul (11-19, 4-14) with a career-high 20 points.

---

No. 4 VILLANOVA 97, GEORGETOWN 73

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Mikal Bridges scored 24 points and Jalen Brunson had 16 points and seven assists and Jay Wright moved into a tie atop Villanova's career wins list with 413.

Wright improved to 413-165 since he took the job in 2001 and has led the Wildcats to the 2009 Final Four and 2016 national championship. He matched Al Severance, who went 413-201 from 1936-1961.

The Wildcats (27-4, 14-4) head to Madison Square Garden as the No. 2 seed after their run of four straight regular-season conference titles was ended by Xavier.

Jesse Govan scored 30 points on 10-of-15 shooting for the Hoyas (15-14, 5-13).

---

No. 5 DUKE 73, No. 9 NORTH CAROLINA 64

Grayson Allen added 15 points in his final game at Cameron Indoor Stadium, and Gary Trent Jr. had 13 points - including three 3-pointers in the final 10 minutes - to help the Blue Devils (25-6, 13-5) clinch the No. 2 seed in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament.

Duke was 8 of 15 from 3-point range in the second half - the Blue Devils made just 1 of 10 from that distance in the first half - and outrebounded North Carolina 24-13 after halftime.

Cameron Johnson scored 16 points for the Tar Heels (22-9, 11-7),

---

OKLAHOMA STATE 82, No. 6 KANSAS 64

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) - Kendall Smith scored a career-high 25 points and Mitchell Solomon had 16 points and seven rebounds for Oklahoma State.

Oklahoma State (18-13, 8-10 Big 12) swept the season series from Kansas, marking the first time that the Jayhawks have been swept in a home-and-home since 2003-04, a span of 103 series.

Devonte' Graham, the reigning Big 12 Player of the Week, scored 15 points and had eight assists for the Jayhawks (24-7, 13-5), who had a five-game winning streak snapped.

---

No. 7 GONZAGA 83, LOYOLA MARYMOUNT 69

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Killian Tillie scored 24 points, including making all five 3-point attempts, while Johnathan Williams added 20 points for Gonzaga in the West Coast Conference quarterfinals.

Zach Norvell Jr. had 17 points as top-seeded Gonzaga (28-4) could not pull away until 5 minutes left in the game, despite shooting 61 percent from the field, including 19 of 24 (79 percent) in the second half. This was Bulldogs' 12th straight win, and 15th at the WCC Tournament.

James Batemon led eighth-seeded LMU (11-20) with 27 points.

---

No. 8 PURDUE 78, PENN STATE 70

NEW YORK (AP) - Carsen Edwards scored 27 points and Purdue pulled away to reach the Big Ten Tournament championship game for the second time in three seasons.

Third-seeded Purdue (28-5) faces No. 5 Michigan, which will try to repeat as tournament champs on Sunday at Madison Square Garden.

Purdue frustrated conference scoring leader Tony Carr, holding him to 4-of-18 shooting and 12 points. Shep Garner led the Nittany Lions (21-12) with 33 points.

---

No. 12 TEXAS TECH 79, TCU 75

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - Keenan Evans scored 23 points and Texas Tech stopped a four-game losing streak.

Evans had his first double-digit scoring game since a toe injury that sidelined him at halftime of a loss to Baylor that started the skid when the Red Raiders (23-8, 11-7) were in sole possession of the Big 12 lead.

Desmond Bane scored 21 points for the Horned Frogs (21-10, 9-9), who had their first four-game conference winning streak in 20 years stopped.

---

No. 14 AUBURN 79, SOUTH CAROLINA 70.

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - Bryce Brown scored 29 points, making eight 3-pointers, and Auburn claimed a share of the Southeastern Conference title.

The Tigers (25-6, 13-5) earned the top seed in next week's SEC Tournament with their first regular-season title since 1999 and third overall.

Brown led a comeback after Auburn trailed by 14 points midway through the first half, busted out of a shooting slump in a big way. He made 8 of 12 3-pointers after going 7 for 39 over the previous four games while nursing foot and shoulder injuries.

Frank Booker led South Carolina (16-15, 7-11) with 27 points and 10 rebounds.

---

No. 16 TENNESSEE 66, GEORGIA 61

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Admiral Schofield scored 23 points to lead Tennessee's second-half comeback Saturday as the Volunteers won a share of the Southeastern Conference regular-season championship.

The Vols (23-7, 13-5) share the SEC regular-season title with Auburn.

Tennessee is getting a share of its first league crown since 2008 after being picked to finish 13th out of 14 teams by the league's media before the season.

The Vols have won four straight and 11 of their last 13. Tennessee's latest victory ended Georgia's five-game winning streak in this series.

Yanta Maten had 18 points for Georgia (16-14, 7-11).

SYRACUSE 55, No. 18 CLEMSON 52

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Oshae Brissett and Tyus Battle each scored 17 points for Syracuse.

It was an opportunity for Syracuse (19-12, 8-10 Atlantic Coast Conference) to fill the biggest void on its resume - the lack of a marquee win - and the Orange capitalized. They were coming off a 15-point loss at Boston College, which put a big dent in their postseason hopes.

Clemson (22-8, 11-7) entered the game ranked eighth in RPI and already assured of its first NCAA Tournament berth in seven years. The Tigers finished 4-6 on the road and suffered just their second loss this season after leading at halftime.

Marcquise Reed had 21 points and Elijah Thomas 18 to lead Clemson as the pair accounted for every Clemson point in the second half.

---

No. 19 ARIZONA 66, CALIFORNIA 54

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Deandre Ayton had 26 points and 20 rebounds, helping Arizona clinch the Pac-12 regular-season title outright.

Arizona (24-7, 14-4) had a hard time shaking the Bears (8-23, 2-16).

Arizona closed the game with a 13-1 run, finishing off its fifth Pac-12 title in six seasons.

Allonzo Trier, Arizona's second-leading scorer, had a rough final home game of the 2017-18 season, finishing with two points on 1-of-10 shooting, including 0 for 7 on 3-pointers.

---

SAN DIEGO STATE 79, No. 21 NEVADA 74

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Trey Kell scored six points in the final 1:19 to finish with 17 and fellow senior Malik Pope scored 16 to lead San Diego State.

The victory, coupled with Wyoming's loss at Boise State, means the Aztecs (19-10, 11-7) avoid a play-in game in Las Vegas on Wednesday and will instead start in the quarterfinals on Thursday. SDSU won its sixth straight game.

Jordan Caroline scored eight of Nevada's final 10 points in the last 3 minutes and finished with 29 for the Wolf Pack (26-6, 15-3), who had already clinched their second straight regular-season title and the No. 1 seed.

---

FLORIDA 80, No. 23 KENTUCKY 67

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Jalen Hudson scored 22 points and Chris Chiozza broke the school's all-time assist record as Florida ended Kentucky's four-game winning streak.

The Gators (20-11, 11-7) won their third straight, swept Kentucky for the first time in four years and secured the No. 3 seed in next week's Southeastern Conference Tournament.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led Kentucky (21-10, 10-8) with 17 points.

---

MARSHALL 76, No. 24 MIDDLE TENNESSEE STATE 67

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) - Jon Elmore scored 23 points and Marshall swept two games from Middle Tennessee.

The Thundering Herd (21-10, 12-6 Conference USA) was the only C-USA team to beat the Blue Raiders (24-6, 16-2) this season as they ended Middle's 11-game winning streak.

Brandon Walters led the Blue Raiders with 20 points and Nick King added 18.

Monday?s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend

13) Cincinnati 62, Wichita State 61? Intense, high level game; Bearcats win the AAC regular season title. Cincy PG Evans was hobbling around most of the game; they need him to be healthy 11 days from now.

12) Loyola Chi 65, Illinois State 49? Ramblers are in NCAA?s for first time since 1985; this was their 5th year in the MVC- it is first time they?ve had a winning conference record since 2007.

As for Illinois State, they lost in finals of Arch Madness for 4th time in six years, losing to four different schools, two of whom (Creighton, Wichita) aren?t even in the MVC anymore.

11) Think about it, conference realignment has made coaches millionaires who work at schools that didn?t even move. Andy Enfield broke the bank at USC because of his success at Florida Gulf Coast, where his team made the Sweet 16 in 2013.

But Florida Gulf Coast became the best team in the Atlantic Sun only because Belmont moved up to the OVC; Bruins won the A-Sun title five of the last seven years they were in the league. Enfield should send the Belmont AD a gift every year.

FGCU is 70-22 in A-Sun play since Belmont moved on.

Wichita State became a MVC power after Creighton went to the Big East.

10) Lipscomb 108, Florida Gulf Coast 96? Speaking of which, you play the conference title game on your home floor, its not good if you?re down 60-31 at halftime. Lipscomb was 32-47 on the foul line, and this was a true road game for them. 47 free throws is an awful lot.

FGCU made a wild comeback in the second half, got within five points, but ran out of gas at the end and Lipscomb is in the NCAA?s for the first time ever.

Lipscomb won its last eight games and 12 of last 13- they play 7th-fastest tempo in country. Some of their high-profile non-conference games:
? Lost 86-64 at Alabama
? Lost 80-57 at Texas
? Lost 81-71 at Tennessee
? Lost 98-66 at Purdue

Lipscomb turns ball over 20+% of time out of conference, which is a red flag; at times they looked awful when Florida Gulf Coast was pressing them.

9) Phil Mickelson won a playoff over Justin Thomas in this week?s PGA event; Mickelson got his first Tour win in January 1991; Thomas was born in April, 1993

8) Over the last 30 years, this was just 23rd out of 1,355 PGA tournaments that was won by a golfer who was 47+ years old.

7) Virginia won the ACC by four games; 3rd-place teams were six games behind Virginia.

6) Ohio State coach Chris Holtmann is 49-23 in conference games wth Butler/Ohio State the last four years, but he is 0-4 in conference tournament games in those seasons.

When he was at Gardner-Webb, Holtmann?s teams were 23-29 in conference games, 1-3 in the conference tournaments, so he is 1-7 overall as a head coach in conference tourneys.

5) Radford 55, Liberty 52? Carlik Jones, a 31.1% 3-point shooter coming in, drained a walk-off, conference-winning 3-ball at the buzzer to send Radford dancing for first time since 2009, when they got waxed 101-58 by North Carolina as a 16-seed in first round.

This year?s Radford team had these high-profile pre-conference games:
? Lost 82-72 at Ohio State.
? Lost 74-62 at Vanderbilt
? Lost 95-68 at Virginia Tech
? Lost 77-62 at Nevada

They play the 5th-slowest tempo in America.

4) Interesting note: Some NFL teams at the Combine scheduled 15:00 interviews with UCLA players, only to grill that player about QB Josh Rosen. Teams will do anything they can to mine out information about players they might potentially select.

3) From MMQB.com: ???.there?s a favorite question employed by almost every team in the NFL when quizzing a prospect about his teammates: If you could take one teammate with you to your future NFL team, who would it be??

It is straight out of the movie Draft Day, where the Browns don?t draft a QB prospect in part because his teammates didn?t go to his 21st birthday party. A quarterback has to be a leader, a person his teammates believe in. Doesn?t work any other way.

2) We had 8.5 inches of snow in Albany the other day; in Cobleskill, which Mapquest says is 45 miles away from here, they had 39 inches of snow, over three feet!!! No bueno.

1? Kawhi Leonard and Jordan Brand were working on a new four-year extension worth more than $20 million, but now talks have stalled.

According to ESPN.com: ???.discussions broke down abruptly because representatives for Leonard didn?t feel that the new deal reflected the forward?s accomplishments and standing within the league.? Oh boy.

Leonard has been cleared by the Spurs? doctors to play, but has chosen not to; he?s played in nine games this season- he currently makes $500,000 a year on his Jordan endorsement deal, is being paid $18,868,625 by the Spurs this season.
