sad for his wife and kids :nooo:

this guy was fearless and it caught up to him all too early. He was a huge risk taker and put himself into situations where this could happen...unfortunately

when i hear about stuff like this i cant help but be a little angry that someone who has children, continually puts themselves at risk.

RIP Steve.

With his knowledge and skill, he is usually in no more danger than us driving down the road, IMO.

I agree, but this guy wasnt wrapped too tight. Isnt he the one who held his infant son in one hand and teased an alligator or something with the other?

This was just a matter of time. Feel for his family and kids. RIP.

That sucks. I really liked his shows as they were very entertaining. He was one funny fellow.
RIP Steve Irwin

I am deeply saddened. I have enjoyed his programs on Animal Planet, especially those that highlighted his family. He was raised doing the things that he did and wanted to instill in his children the same love and passion he had for nature. I just hope their mother will continue the legacy.

freakish accident. most who have spent a lot of time in the ocean have been popped by a stingray, usually in the foot. hurts like hell but is rarely fatal, virtually never for a healthy adult. from what i read, he was swimming closely over a large one and it stung him under the ribcage and pierced his heart. sounds like the big man was calling him home. when its your time its your time.

I'm not 100% sure of the type or size of the stingray, but I'm sure it differs from the type of stingrays that we feed at Sea World or swim with on vacations. After all he was filming a show so the stingray had to be a some great size. Think about it.

Kansas City area for who knows how long....
reports say it was Bull Ray

reports say it was Bull Ray

makes sense, these are impressively large and great for TV.

they get upto 8 feet, and weigh up to 186 pounds! :scared

I feel very sorry for Steve's wife, Terri. Met her several times when she was a member of our Reptile Club in Eugene Oregon in mid-80s. We sometimes called her the "cougar woman" for her strong committed agitation to end hunting of cougars in Oregon state. Back then wildlife folks had no idea how many cougars killed and how many left in wild (turns out they aren't in much danger). A dynamic and hard working gal (good lookin' too, esp back then!).

She will certainly carry on Steve's causes and advocate for the issues he believed in. Poor young kids without father now.:sadwave:

He was definately a goofy guy, but his commitment & dedication to animals, environment & the preservation of nature as a whole is unquestioned. He really did a tremendous amount of good for those causes & I commend & thank him for that.

Sad to see him leave us. Wish the best for his wife & kids.

GOD Bless & RIP Steve.

Two things you rarely hear when mentioning the Rays
1. Hitting anything....
2. A heart..
Tampa is truely awful....

Seriously, my kids grew up watching that freak
They loved his show
They were broken up today...

That guy did an absolute ton for nature, his was a face that almost everyone in the world knew. Yes, he lived on the edge and died doing what he loved. Beats slowly dying of some disease, a sharp spike right through you heart, that's quick and to the point that's for sure.

As for the footage, I'm sure they will show it, after all it is nature, I'm sure Steve himslef would say "show it", why would they not? I mean wasn't that the point of most of his shows, we humans try to "clean it up", he swam to close to the stingray, the stingray was protecting himsel;f, and Steve died.....that's nature!

"Stingrays have a serrated, toxin-loaded barb, or spine, on the top of their tail. The barb, which can be up to 10 inches long, flexes if a ray is frightened. Stings usually occur to people when they step on or swim too close to a ray and can be excruciatingly painful but are rarely fatal", said University of Queensland marine neuroscientist Shaun Collin.

Collin said he suspected Irwin died because the barb pierced under his ribcage and directly into his heart.

"It was extraordinarily bad luck. It's not easy to get spined by a stingray and to be killed by one is very rare," Collin said.
