CROWD NOISE - why do they always say

why would it be louder there than anywhere else on the field? unless they mean more people participate in making noise when they are closer to the goal line.

I would guess it's because of the people with endzone seats yelling and screaming50 feet behind you. In the middle of the field you just have the people on either sideline that are still a bit farther away from you.

OK, I have a dumb question, when you false start on 1st and 10 on the 20 yard line it is now 1st and 15 from the 15 yard line, but if you commit the same penalty from the 6 yard line it's 1st and 13 from the 3 yard line because of the "half the distance" rule.

Why can't they move the first down marker 2 yards farther down field so it's still 1st and 15?

Thats a big part of it, but a lot of it has to do with the economic demographics of the people who attend a football game and where they tend to be seated.

In Cleveland they have many people that should be locked up sitting in the end zone.

I don't know about the NFL, but in college the student sections are generally behind one of the end zones and they are often WAY more obnoxious and loud than the average fan.

Not too mention I was a season ticket holder for years in the End Zone front row for the MN Vikings! Have also sat in between the 30's, 40's, and on the 50, ok probably the 47, but you get the picture. But when the action is in your end, it is just ungawdly how load it gets...especialy in a dome. The other seats sure it reverberates but nothing near the end zone.

Another observation, I was 8th row behind home plate for the Twins 87 World Series, and then Upper Deck in the 91 Series and I would swear the Upper Deck roar, was louder than behind the plate. (Don't know enough about sound besides the waves bouncing around, but do they tend to rise as well?)

Hill Murray is known for their recruiting of players to the private school, and is well known for their Hockey Program. So your buddy wasn't lying...

They even televise on cable now the Boys Hockey Games of the week, with live telecast etc... and when the Boys State Hoigh SChool Tournament comes around, it is almost as big as our Prep Bowl football games.

It's not just the popularity, it's the quality of play. Minnesota has simply the finest HS hockey talent in America, and you see it when you watch the games, esp. the best programs. I haven't seen a game in a few years since I moved away to college and post-college work, but in HS (and I was a player myself in high school), we'd go watch these guys play as often as we could. We were a decent team, and the top MN teams could've played us 3-on-5 and beaten us by 10 goals.

My junior year of high school I went to a Bloomington Jefferson-Apple Valley game at the Ice Gardens, and the atmosphere rivaled that of a Badger/Gopher game (probably the best rivalry in college hockey). Also saw Hill Murray lose in OT to White Bear Lake in the sectional final that year in what was, to this day, probably the single-best hockey game I've ever seen played (and I've seen a LOT).

Dogface- does Channel 9 still do the state tourneys? Always thought they did an outstanding job considering they were the ugly stepchild of Minnesota TV stations.

I always went back and forth with my buddy that east coast had better prep hockey than Minny but the fervor seems to be bigger in Minny..
Mass has some great prep school and so does CT
RI has a team that has one 31 straight prep D1 title (Bryan Berard, Garth Snow and others went there)
I have seen Minny travel for college hockey and they are Big tim e too..
The Bean pot is pretty exciting up here

That Rhode Island team came and played in Edina's holiday tournament at the old Met Center in either 1994 or 1995 and got smoked if I'm not mistaken. I think they took 7th out of 8.

LOVE the Beanpot tourney. Just wish Harvard or NE could win it a few times and knock the BC/BU combo of their perch. I covered college hockey for four seasons, so it still has a place in my heart, esp. with my alma mater ranked No. 1 in the nation this year.

Yep Channel 9 still does it, and they really do a very nice job for the toruneys. The also have the High School basketball, and Prep Bowl, all very big shows.

My buddy also does the pregame shows for MN Wild broadcasts in MN, as well as the traveling GOW for High School hockey, as he was a former Burnsville Player, which is the top tier of schools in terms of size.

The hockey is great, and is pretty much dominated by the larger schools eepecially since we went to a tiered state championship format, but you get some of those northern MN boys down here from Warroad, or Duluth East, and you get to see some special players.

Having the argument baout East coast, or MN players and the atmosphere, I don't know if you can get any more involved than what you see here, fans aqre ravenous, and the skating skills of these guys are pretty impressive. But that's what makes sports great, there is always a debate about who's better, so let's drop the puck! LOL!

Isnt it amazing we can "argue" about who is better in a civilized manner ??? I attended BC so I have had some college hockey heartbreak They always lose to BU (saftey school!!) in the Bean anpot.
PLus they gagged a few Ntl Titles recently...
My senior year BC had Emma (Hobey Baker) Mcginnis, Heinz, Bill Guerin was a second liner. Iam Moran also
BU had Tkcuck, Amonte, Tomlinson and a few others
