Where it is real F ing COLD
My employer pays about $15,000 for my health insurance costs each year. That's like another $7.50 and hour added to my wages.

I like work!

Yea my buddie's wage isn't the greatest but he works for the state. His health care is FREE. That is worth it's weight in gold.
I too have worked at places where people bitch about a measly $15 prescription charge or would sacrifice health coverage for a slight wage increase during contract negotiation. Just stupid.

I've paid for my own insurance for years. My wife and I rarely go to the doctor and don't smoke. We've shopped, switched cos., went with high deductible, the gamut. Still fcuk us royally.

Anyway, we've settled on an HSA after much research. Seems lilke best approach.

I pay for my families insurance since I'm a small business owner and I've been looking at HSA program.

Here's my question. If my deductible for the year is 6500 and by the end of the year I've put 6500 in and I haven't used any of it, do I have to put anymore in the next year? Maybe I don't fully understand it.

Jack

there are insurance plans for small business owners around here

you may want to look into that

Also if possible, for all you guys getting various surguries done, it might be a good idea to get them done in other states. A girl I grew up with had a couple different surguries performed in another state (south somewhere) and it cost here thousands less than it would have cost here for the same work.

Jack, u definitely need the HSA, especially if u are going to pay 15 grand a year for insurance! :scared

Have u talked to DTB? He's in the industry, and I'm pretty sure he keeps some sort of indemnity/catastrophic type plan.

You're going to have to go way down in quality of plan or else bend over I'm afraid. Make sure too that they aren't quoting you a maternity rate for your wife (I know you're not planning on having a kid!).

speaking of the comapany's denying payment. I've been fighting that for 15 years now. You have to really watch those EOBs and know what your coverage is.

Even if you have some sort of high deductible plan, any charges are run through your insurance carrier, and that knocks down the highly inflated charge to "reasonable and customary" (your insurance carrier's rate) rates.

For example, imagine you have a high deductible $15,000 catastrophic plan. You get a diagnostics bill for $10,000. That $10,000 is run through your insurance and chopped to $4,500 or maybe even less. Your EOB then says 'your insurance paid $0, if not already billed, you owe the provider $4,500'. Still a hell of a lot of money, but far better than owing 10K!!

taoist, I can't believe u carry no health insurance!

One great thing about working for the government is benifits. I try telling younger people all the time that benifits are just as important as pay. Are these Savings Accounts good for younger people with younger kids, or is it better for loder inividuals?

Jack, as these smart guys above me said you need an HSA. I have an HSA and my health care out of pocket (including insurance premiums) went down 75% the past 2 years. Its hard to beat, and if your even kind of healthy is a no brainer:shrug:

The uninsured are making it hard on everyone no matter what your coverage is.

Canada? no thanks.

You too, aye Jack?
No big deal, I guess.
Truth of the matter is that I wouldn't move down to the States in a million years.
I guess maybe we're all a bit partial to where we came from.
(wonder how all those Iraqi refugees feel about having to leave their homeland)

Still, don't believe all the negative propaganda that you might hear about our health care system. No comparison, I believe.
You guys start taxing your corporations--fairly--and you could have universal coverage, too.
Seems like an essential service. No?

Many of you down there are forced to wait until it becomes an emergency and, as someone else pointed out, often that means it comes too late.

Guess we'd all like to see the SPP quashed.
Harmonization?
Won't happen if you guys don't have health care.
And, we'll need it if we are lowering our health and safety standards down to what you possess down there.

Might move to Europe.
Never the States.
Considering that, I shouldn't take offense.

May your health remain strong.

z'cool.

As I just tried to explain to smurphy, in another thread, I'm just a little on edge right now. Had a few major disappointments lately AS WELL as looking like a total fool on the bases.

My ma's in rough shape.
A close friend, too.
Another just had a heart attack.

I dunno.

Should take a break from the forum, maybe.
Perhaps you could deny me access to the politcal forum--might help.

I like this place.
Some cool people here. Most of 'em, actually.

Generally I try not to piss people off but I might be doing that lately.

I need some George Carlin, perhaps.
Something to lighten my mood.
Laughter is some pretty good medicine.

F'ing Cubs better win tomorrow.

He's not the only one. I haven't had any form of health insurance in 12 years. Keep thinking about getting some, but what a ripoff. You play by the rules and pay your bills and then have to fight the insurance company to death in order to get them to pony up like they should. It's a wrong system - the whole concept of insurance for profit makes them greedy and stingy by nature.

I've spent $1,000 on a broken collarbone and maybe another grand or so on the dentist in those 12 years. That pans out to about $13.90 per month over this time.

I will worry about insurance when/if I have kids. Til then I'll just keep rollin the bones and hope to not crap out. ...Then again, even if I had insurance there's a chance I'd crap out.
