have an 05 deville.

computer has been saying 'check coolant level' for 6 months or longer. car never over heated or lost water. i figured it was a computer problem because sometimes it will say one of the tires needs air and the tire doesn't, or check airbag or whatever.

anyway, been driving it like this for 6 months at least.

take it in today for some service and tell them about that.

they call within and hour to give me the price on the work i requested and say all they had to do was top off the radiator because it didn't show any leaks.

2 hours later thay call and said the tech left the meter, or some shit on, and it detected a leak around the water pump about an hour later.

they want $700 to replace 5 gaskets around the water pump. i told them no, it has been like this for over 6 months so don't do anything now.

what do you think?

christ!

a couple of things

1. over the last 6 months was it topped off and did you notice a decrease in fluid level? minimal or a good amount decreased?
2. could be a sensor nothing more if level hasn't decreased..

3. get a 2nd opinion, if all else fails.

If it ain 't broke, don't fix!

actually i figured it was a sensor and never even checked it because my temp gauge never showed a problem.

he told me today they had to top it off. didn't even use a gallon. it hasn't been topped off at all during the 6 months.

i call bullshit but thought i'd ask the car guys here first.

Try resetting the computer.
Take the + battery cable off
from the battery. Reconnect
it will reset the computer and
clear any alarms that are false.
Will have to reset time and radio.

Jack, I just had the same thing happen on my car. I had to replace the IAT sensor, took only 2 minutes. I had Autozone run the free diagnostic check on it and that's how I found out what it was.

Above the Clouds....
I wouldn't jump and shell out $700 for a problem that may not exist. If there is a leak it will get worse over time and you will see fluid in the driveway.
Take care of it after you know that there's definatly something wrong. $700 is a lot to pay for gaskets.

Just keep an eye on it and reset to computer like AL said.

It's hard to find a mechanic now that won't try to focking rape you! Tech left it on an hour more and it showed... :mj07: :mj07:

Kansas City area for who knows how long....
If it were (cheap) me, I'd have the technicians show me where they found the leak (I assume they put in some coolant dye and found it seeping out with UV pen light) and then I'd leave and go home and slop some RTV all over that gasket area. I've seen that "fix" hold back gasket leaks for years.

Yeah really. It may have detected the spill when they topped it off.

u know any honest mechanics in Bowling Green? :mj07: I got a brake estimate on my '89 Mercury last year for new brakes for 520 bucks. I said no thanks, car's not even worth that! :mj07: I got a local crackhead to do it in his yard (I took him all the materials) for a little more than a hundred bucks, and the work is just fine.

rip off artists...

1) Veterinarians
2) Mechanics
3) Dentists
