Wow, Iraq dominates the news, and I rarely see anybody discussing the situation in Darfur. Don't see anything on the news about (in the few minutes each day I actually watch the news).

George Clooney, clown that he is, seems to be one of the major spokesmen for the suffering people in Darfur. I think he actually gets it in this case although I've never agreed with him in the past about politics.

I don't know all the details about this crisis, but I think the following are right (please correct if I'm wrong).

1) There's some sort of UN force there now, but they are pulling out the end of this month and there are no replacements set to replace them.

2) There are genocide style killings going on in this region with estimates reaching 500,000 in the last 3 years.

3) There's always some sort of famine and lack of food/infrastructure.

4) Millions have been rooted from their homes secondary to the violence, and there are huge refugee camps.

5) I'm unclear really on who is doing the fighting, who the government is supporting, etc.

It's a horrible situation. What is the solution??

i was just wondering how did you come to the conclusion that Clooney was some kind of asshole. The only place i ever heard him get trashed was on Fox news. In the South do you people get any other news? This man is doing ten times the better things in this world than any of you buddies over at Fox. Those people in Hollywood could sit back and just count their money but they stick up for fools who don't know any better. Fools who are easily manipulated by people like Rove. The mystery is why do they waste their time. I guess when you hear lies over and over again you just react. Plus their are so many mental midgets in our Country they need to react.

listen, idiot, where do you get your information that folks in the South don't know anything? You're just another elitist, spoon-fed liberal. I do not watch Fox news, really, I don't watch any news. I don't know chit about "Rove" and could care less about him. My views on Clooney are that he is a clown idiot for many, many reasons, but like I said in my post, I think he's right in this instance working for this issue and calling out the UN to do what they actually said they were going to do.

What's your take on this crisis, or do u just want to try to unsuccessfully dog a poor old Kentucky hillbilly redneck? Bring it if you must, but you'll soon find out who the "mental midget" is in this thread. :sadwave:

Were to embarrassed to say much here. Were hiding our faces. Helping people in this kind of difficulty is what were supposed to be about.

no thoughts about this crisis? No opinions? Sponge, now that your attack of me is complete, what do you think about Darfur, and what should be done about it? I don't know, that's why I posted the thread. I just know it's a terrible, horrible mess.

I guess it's not a "sexy" crisis. No money, no oil = no real interest from us. Yeah, it's pretty much as bad as anything can be over there. We will do everything possible to pretend it doesn't exist though. Nothing to gain from helping except risking our lives to save a bunch of poor people's lives. No profits to be had, no great capitalistic gains to be made. Despite the face we like to put on our actions - we rarely do anything internationally without there being a significant material or strategic motive involved.

By the way, 6-5. I appreciate you starting a post like this. Most Republicans wouldn't. Not sure why Sponge decides to deflect the subject to Fox and Clooney and Southern intelligence. Wish more people would address the topic than run off on miscellaneous attacks.

Six its a complete disgrace but im also sick of us being the one everyone wants over there to help. I guess when you have to constantly repeat to the world that you are the only super power because we have this terrible ego that is heavy on testosterone this is what happens to your country. Im so sick of my tax dollars being pissed away and not getting a dam thing in return for it but terrorism when it could be used over here for something worth while. Every fricken working mans right in this country is under attack with these asshole in office but they can throw money away like nothing to these other nations for dick on the dollar.
Here is a couple of ideas i have come up with for these scumbags in office. They will love these
1. Lets make it illegal to use wood burning stoves. This is awful how people use these when we can put more money in the oil companies pockects. No more burning wood to heat your house. Its bad for the enviroment. Burn oil.
2. Anytime a union goes on strike lets take our tax paying dollars and fund the company so the workers on strike can just give up.
3. Last lets raise Social Security to 90. Lets take this money and buy even bigger useless shit for the defense department. Lets take the rest and drop the age all politicaians collect their retirement. That is even if their is an age. I might campaign on these issues and im sure i can get over 60 percent of the nitwits in the country to by into it.

Wasn't Clooney in front of the UN begging for help? Fox news has made it a crusade to trash these hollywood people. That is where six five heard that and he is running with it. That also was part of his post. Im confused how you missed this all. Souther intellect? Im tired of my country being taking over by thieves and its the south that gets them in office eveytime. So that is part of it also. A huge part of it. You want to vote for republicans fine but vote for the ones who don't have an agenda or will play the race card to fool the south like he cares about them. Im also not trashing all southeners. There are about 45 percent of good ones. What we really need is two presidents. One for the red states and one for the blue. Then in two years we will have a flood of southerners moving out of their area because they would be flat broke wondering what hit them.

Wayne,

Let's go, brother. It's been a while since you busted out your theory about an all red island and an all blue island.

You know the one, where everybody on the blue island would be dead of AIDS in a week and everyone on the red island would be millionaires within hours.

Do have one question for sponge on topic heading however--
Would like his opinion on Dikfer's in Darfur?

The Darfur situation is a bit complex. That region of the Sudan is huge. It is bigger than the whole of France. Sudan is ruled by Arab Muslims and the blacks (mostly Christians or backed by Christians) in Darfur want to secede from the rest of the country.

The problem is that Arab Muslims are still a majority in the Darfur region and they allegedly have been the target of militia attacks from secession proponents in the south for years. (You may have heard Manute Bol talk about Sudan. He promotes the Christian-backed separatists who are accused of perpetrating these attacks.)

The situation reached a head when Muslims Arab militias started trying to ethnically cleanse (meaning move off land; not necessarily kill) certain areas that are important for cattle grazing. According to the Arab militias, this was in response to the continuing separatist actions of the Christian/indigenous blacks.

The U.N. force went in there to calm things down, but I believe they will be out soon. I believe what Clooney and some of the others are looking for is to break off Darfur from Sudan to get it out from under Muslim rule. Obviously this presents a problem because the region still has an Arab Muslim majority and there is a real question as to whether the people of Darfur would actually vote for secession if given a chance.

Personally, I don't have a strong opinion on it one way or the other. I would like to see the U.S. have a light approach there (if any) because we already have a reputation of being anti-Islam. Surely any effort on our part to help Darfur secede from Sudan would only enhance that reputation and potentially rile up even more Muslims into jihad against us. I understand the counter-argument that we shouldn't just sit here and let the blacks in the south be forced to live under what they claim is an oppressive regime. It is a tough argument but I am against Clooney here.

65, Sudan has been brought up on this board periodically, certainly not enough. It's a incredibly complex situation going back centuries, involving conflicts between the Turks, Egyptians, British and everyone else. The Great famine was brought on by several factors including war, over population, and lack of rain around the Sahara.

Nearly everyone on earth sees what is happening now as genocide, although the United nations hasn't agreed. the overwhelming problem is the same problem as everywhere else, radical Muslim killers, called the JANJAWEED, they are responsible for the murder, rape and displacement of nearly a million people.

Nick Douglas, are you serious? You blame this problem on to Christian minority??:nono: :nono:

There currently is no dilemma in the world that even closely compares to the human suffering in Sudan. If we truly are in Iraq for humanitarian reasons, we should have been in Sudan years ago.

what a complete and utterly idiotic post. I think you're trying to suggest that people in your area support the non-working rednecks in mine. :142smilie :mj07: Good one, sponge. I'm sure there is nobody on the dole in your home state??

Again, I rarely watch news, and when I do, it is during some crisis like the Israel/Hesbollah war, and then, I flip back and forth between fox, msnbc, cnbc, and cnn. I actually saw Clooney in front of the UN on a CSPAN rerun. You are therefore wrong again on my sources.

As far as playing the race card, you're really showing your stupidity there.

Lastly, although I appreciate Smurphy's compliment, I'm not a Republican.

Where do we get troops to go help there. We have none to spare. And this administration has other countries it wants to screw with on there list for 6 years now. And don't seem to have time for anything else. It make take US 10 years to patch up some of the hate this out fit has caused around the globe once there out.

Honestly if i had your backwards ass logic id have to take a step back. I will say this again. You and Kosar really need to realize their is more to life than fox news.
I fell for this also in the first gulf war. I thought to myself wow what a new station. It was like the war was right next door. When the war was over all the truth came out and i said to myself this station had everything wrong. Then the voice of reason set in and i realize just like the New York Post (SAME OWNERS I MIGHT ADD) That this station was full of shit. I call a spade a spade. I said we are over in Iraq because of war profiteers among other things and you guys can't think out of the box cause fox doesn't want you to. There is something new coming out that i can't wait to print but i can't find it yet. It will show you what a great war profitting nation we have under this administration.

shamrock, and ND, thanks for the views. Shamrock, I've read a little about those JANJAWEED characters, and they sound like bad dudes!

I guess that many Americans just see another bloated bellied African baby with flies in his eyes and figures that's how it has been all their life and that's how it will always be? Is that why we haven't shown any presence there?? Maybe? do we just not give a flying fock about a bunch of Africans?? I know I care much more for them than I do the Iraqis or the tsumani flood victims.

I don't know what the answer is. I don't know if the USA should do anything. I do know the UN should especially since it seems their own resolutions from the past say they should.

Six i never said that. What i meant is that you guys can have your right winger representative and he can railroad you instead of us all. We are eight trillion in debt now. Please don't tell me a thing about the race card. George Bushes staff pulled this shit on McCain in the 2000 primaries and the south fell for it. It was the single thing that turned the race around. Do me a favor would ya. Put on Fox news right before the election. I will gaurantee you you will see clips of the looters in New Orleans. You will see it a few times just to remind people about race.
