Wow, Iraq dominates the news, and I rarely see anybody discussing the situation in Darfur. Don't see anything on the news about (in the few minutes each day I actually watch the news).
George Clooney, clown that he is, seems to be one of the major spokesmen for the suffering people in Darfur. I think he actually gets it in this case although I've never agreed with him in the past about politics.
I don't know all the details about this crisis, but I think the following are right (please correct if I'm wrong).
1) There's some sort of UN force there now, but they are pulling out the end of this month and there are no replacements set to replace them.
2) There are genocide style killings going on in this region with estimates reaching 500,000 in the last 3 years.
3) There's always some sort of famine and lack of food/infrastructure.
4) Millions have been rooted from their homes secondary to the violence, and there are huge refugee camps.
5) I'm unclear really on who is doing the fighting, who the government is supporting, etc.
It's a horrible situation. What is the solution??
