I will be chairman of the scouting for food program for 2012 for memphis area this year

It was a humbling experience when i toured the facility today and met w the org. Staff

What really impacted me was the "backpack for kids" program.

Each week, 1500 kids in the Memphis area are given a backpack full of food on Friday, so they can eat over the weekend. They return the backpack on monday. They eat bkfast/lunch at school but would have NOTHING TO EAT ALL WEEKEND without this program...

Food is kid friendly, ie pop top cans etc, bc homes usually do not have electricity to cook or no one their is functional...most r strung out on
drugs....

Over 300,000 families in Memphis/n Mississippi area are in need.. And that's just the families that report their need....

I guess I have had my head in the sand bc I never imagined these staggering numbers

Anyway, last year 38,000 lbs was collected

MY GOAL is 75,000 lbs..

I have secured 4000 paper bags from kroger and will have cub/boy scout leaders put bags at people's homes to b collected on feb 11th

My asst cub master is the local weatherman, :popcorn2 and they will be announcing Scouting for Food program weekly and nightly, the week of feb 6th-11th

I will have collection barrels at 2 kroger stores jan11-feb11 th and will have scouts at stores on weekends to drive support

2 volunteers are responsible for stocking the 1500 backpacks or the kids...

I have told my leaders to give me dates for our dens to go volunteer to help load backpacks ..

Kids helping kids:SIB

Anyway, just wanted to put my thoughts out there regarding hunger in this nation..

When kids go hungry:nono: It cuts deeper

I will keep y'all up to date on my 75,000 lb goal

Is there any way that we can contribute towards your cause?

I've been a lurker for quite some time and you seem to be held in high regard by all on this site, if I can help the cause, I certainly would be willing to do so.

Keep us posted and thank you for your efforts for such an admirable cause.:toast:

That's awesome.

Don't forget Social Networking to help get the word out.

Hell the kids are better at setting up Twitter and Facebook pages, than some professionals.

My wife and I volunteer for an organization that helps provide food, clothing and supplies to homeless children who attend public schools. I envy the sense of accomplishment that you are going to feel when you reach your goal.

Godspeed

Scouting for Food is a national campaign, so look for media outlets promoting the program...

:0054 young man..

please send me an e-mail where I may send along to you a kroger gift card to help you reach your goal of 75,000 lbs.

gift cards can be purchased at any local kroger store and good at any store so I am told.

There are affliated stores with Kroger as well..Frys grocery stores being one I think..Meaning those with those stores in your area may use those for purchase and they are good at Krogers as well..I was told this by a Fry's rep but someone please double check..

Again BigMan...let me know where to send the Gift Card to help you and your scout troop help the less fortunate.......

and by the way...you are a cool dude..

Lawrence: You're a good guy that sets a good example for his kids. Since I am not willing to help out in my own community, let me know how I can support your cause.

If anyone wants to make a monetary donation, let me give you a little information on that

for every $1.00 given, the food bank has the buying power to buy $4.28 worth of groceries....:scared :scared

they are able to go to manufacturers and aggresively negotiate cheap prices for goods.

David, the food bank supervisor, was telling us a story. The Bartlett mayor took $100.00 and David took $100.00 and they wanted to see who could buy the most non-persihable goods..

The mayor ended up with 38 cases of product. David bought 117 cases....:scared :scared :scared

My leaders and I have decided any monies that are donated will only go to the Backpack for Kids program, since these are Cub Scouts helping other kids...David has agreed and can easily earmark the monies for specific parts of the program....

The easiest way is thru Paypal..I just found out if you send as 'personal gift', then no charges...:)

I can keep a running balance and on February 11th, the Pack will present the balance to the food bank. it will be on the news and I will get some pics:0074

OR you can send cash/check to my address and I can add to running balance...

I will start the below Initiative....

2012 Scouting For Food 'MadJack" Initiative

balance... $25.00 + 107.00 worth of food bought
