President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps. Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by setting a goal that all middle school and high school students do 50 hours of community service a year and by developing a plan so that all college students who conduct 100 hours of community service receive a universal and fully refundable tax credit ensuring that the first $4,000 of their college education is completely free. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start.

Thanks for the post Jack.
A local radio show here made it seem like it was mandatory,just like Weasel is making it sound.


Its gonna be a long 4years for Obama,as he will unfortunatly be under the microscope.For even the smallest agendas.It also looks like that his ideas will be twisted by the far right.

and the requirement for highschool kids to perform community service in order to get their diplomas has been in effect in Maryland for a long time now. since 1993 :shrug:

this is not a new idea.

Obama? :shrug:

and maryland is the model you want to emulate?..didn`t you flee this socialist state?....in hock up to our ears...some of the highest taxes...an energy nightmare...

i`m looking to get out myself..

nobody should ever be "required" to do community service,imo...:shrug:

btw...heres another little bit of info i missed...

However you seem to come across as anti -american while trying to make your socialist statement.

This is america, no-one can require anyone to do anything(realisticly)Your pt. of view gets anti,american ,and its a weak one IMO.

how is my p.o.v. anti-american?...because i disagree with "required community service"?....what could be more american than exercising one`s right to disagree with their leader`s policies?... i think martin luther king would also disagree with you...


jack just explained that a diploma in maryland "requires" community service...and i believe my brother is spot on....

as i said maryland`s a mess...take it from me...

the difference is that i can move from maryland to a state that more suits my beliefs and politics(and tax policies)...

but if some of these policies and practices are implemented federally,then i`m screwed....unless i feel like leaving the country...

which isn`t happening...unless it`s feet first..

You come across as if its not conservative,then it doesnt benefit you.And every policy from the left(center,IMO) is out to get you.

Your POV is just far ,far,out there,and it seems thats your only way of thinking ,and in my opinion,distorts whats really is the at the table.

Thats why IMO the conservatives have been fazed out,cause of thinking like you.Part of the reason anyway.
