Matt, you know that China is perpetrating a State sponsored capitalist movement. Few of the benefits reach the real folks over there. Yeah, some might be able to buy a cell phone or a burrito now and then, but in general all that good stuff goes to the government.

Don't get me wrong, I'm making a killing in my business with the price of metals and other commodities at these bubble levels. All my customers got money to burn and are burning it. The problems the price we'll have to pay down the road. Not only the U.S., the whole damn world. China will be sweeping up some markets based on low / subsidized costs, will take more jobs from us and will continue to put out inferior quality material all for the sake of grabbing up the market.
At the same time they will start buying and taking over in smaller countries through financing and implementation of construction projects, etc. while supplying crappy quality and perhaps dangerous environments. After being screwed without Vaseline, then they'll all come to realize that on top of that they are married to these project developers for 30 or more years for maintenance, spares, technology not accessible to outsiders, etc.

If you fools think that's a fallacy, get e frickin' reality check. I've been in the International business for a long time and this China thing will do us no good. But, hey, ya'll take out your red flag and wave away. It's all a fallacy and red China wants to be just like us. They have "seen the light" and want to "change their ways". I wouldn't trust one of them sumbithces if they paid me up front with gold.

And Taiwan better look out for themselves. i can't see us going to war with China over that. Hell, I doubt Wolfowitz wants to got to war with China. We usually pick the easy ones, anyhow (see Iraq).

If Hillary Clinton (search) and Condi Rice (search) face off in the race for the presidency, would each candidate be judged by the same standards that male candidates are judged?

Apparently not, based on a Washington Post (search) critique of what Dr. Rice was wearing in Europe. Listen to this:

"Rice's coat and boots speak of sex and power ? such a volatile combination, and one that in political circles rarely leads to anything but scandal. When looking at the image of Rice in Wiesbaden, the mind searches for ways to put it all into context. It turns to fiction, to caricature. To shadowy daydreams. Dominatrix! So any political authority achieved by Secretary of State Rice is reduced to a sexual fantasy?
Just imagine the uproar from liberal feminists if the Washington Post had said the same about, oh, say, Hillary Clinton. But somehow, a sexist insult thrown at the highest-ranking black woman in public service is okay?

NEW YORK ? The United Nations (search) has sent a letter to FOX News in response to the special Breaking Point investigation, "United Nations Blood Money," that appeared Feb. 13 on FOX News Channel and on FOXNews.com.

U.N. officials charged that FOX News erred in declaring that "high U.N. officials [were] getting oil handouts from Saddam [Hussein]" as part of the Oil-for-Food (search) program.

Following is the U.N.'s comment, in a letter from Shashi Tharoor, U.N. under-secretary-general for communications and public information:

"Only one UN official ? Benon Sevan, the former head of the Office of the Iraq Program ? was found to have solicited allocations of oil under the Program. Mr. Volcker is still investigating whether or not Mr. Sevan personally benefited from this activity. Fox fails to inform viewers that as soon as he received Mr. Volcker?s report, the Secretary-General immediately began disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Sevan, who has been suspended and is no longer allowed on UN premises except to summon his defence."

The U.N. mention of "Mr. Volcker" refers to Paul Volcker, the former chairman of the Federal Reserve, who was tapped by U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan to lead an investigation into Oil-for-Food. In an interim report released last month, Volcker singled out Sevan for having a serious conflict of interest with regard to the management of Oil-for-Food.

FOX News Senior Vice President John Moody, who received the U.N.'s letter, said "FOX stands by its groundbreaking reporting on this scandal. Mr. Tharoor is correct in pointing out that as of now, only one U.N. official is known to have received oil handouts from Saddam. It is, however, worth noting that the individual in question ran the Oil-for-Food program

Enough with the Clinton pardon stuff. You've only referred to this 312 times in the last few years. You act as though his number is soo out of line with other presidents. Your article mentions that 'most presidents only grant clemency to a handful every year.' More BS.

Let's take a look. The first number is pardons granted. The second is the % of pardons granted compared to # applied for and the third is 'pardons granted per month in office'.

Eisenhower- 1110 / 27% / 11.6

JFK- 472 / 27% / 13.9

LBJ - 960 / 21% / 15.5

Nixon- 863 / 51% / 12.9

Ford- 382 / 39% / 13.2

Carter- 534 / 34% / 11.1

Reagan- 393 / 19% / 4.1

Bush 41- 74 / 10% / 1.5

Clinton- 396 / 19% / 4.1

So Wayne, it looks to me that Clinton is quite 'competitive' when it comes to pardons. Let's try to stick to facts and let's try not to post misleading articles. Except for Bush 41, I would hardly classify any of those numbers as 'just a handful'.

The Class Action Fairness Act is a significant victory in that it will serve to greatly reduce a growing misuse of the legal system by lawyers intent on striking it rich at the expense of businesses, their workers, consumers, and even these lawyers' clients.

Our judicial system is designed to be an impartial venue in which legitimate claims can be brought against parties who have committed a wrong with the expectation that justice will prevail. It was never intended to be exploited by a small number of persons for their own personal financial gain at the expense of business and the consumer.

Unfortunately, this is precisely what is happening in a number of American courtrooms as class lawsuits are "shopped" by lawyers hoping to find a sympathetic forum in their quest to garner millions of dollars in fees in the name of justice.

We shake our heads at court rulings which award millions in cases where frivolous claims are brought against companies. What many may not know is that a double injustice is occurring in many such cases as plaintiff lawyers reap huge fees for their lawsuit victories and their class action clients often wind up with pennies or a few discount coupons. Accordingly, businesses suffer, their workers suffer, consumers pay higher prices for goods and services, and plaintiffs in these class action cases get a pittance.

Lawsuit abuse has become so lucrative for trial lawyers that the frequency of class action filings in state courts has risen by 1,315 percent over the last decade. Even more telling is the explosion in the number of such lawsuit filings in state courts deemed sympathetic to class actions.

Since 1998, filings in these so-called "magnet courts" which are recognized for their certification of the most questionable of class action lawsuits have skyrocketed over 5,000 percent.

It is no wonder that such lawsuit abuse has become so popular when lawyers can walk away with a fortune. Take a case filed in a sympathetic court in Texas where Blockbuster Video was sued over its late fees. The class action plaintiffs were awarded a settlement of two coupons for movie rentals and a dollar-off coupon. Meanwhile, the plaintiff's lawyers walked away with $9.25 million - "Wow, What a Difference!"

In another case, Chase Manhattan Bank was sued and chose to settle instead of going to court. The class action plaintiffs got 33 cents each while their lawyers pocketed $4 million in fees. To claim their 33-cent award, plaintiffs had to mail in a form which cost them 34 cents in postage.

No one is arguing that all class action lawsuits aren't justified. Indeed, they are an important tool for consumer protection. However, the law must be applied in a common sense fashion.

The Class Action Fairness Act would move larger interstate class action cases to the jurisdiction of Federal courts, a better venue to decide their merits. The result will be fairer consideration of class action lawsuits and an elimination of abuse which costs consumers more in the end.....""""
