if you think not wearing your seatbelt is a good idea because it will save you from dying in a car accident, you are simply completely out to lunch.

while there may be a very rare instance were being buckled in led to an adverse outcome in an accident, the same person who might save their life in this rare 1 in 1000 (or more) situation would die many times over by flying through their windshield in other accidents.

anyone who thinks not wearing your seatbelt is safer is either lying to themself or cannot interpret simple probablities.

when rotating through trauma i saw about 200 car accidents roll in, i would say about 90-95% had no belt on. the medics and officers would just roll their eyes.

and for the lady who's doctor suggested she smoke during her pregnancy, seriously, i suggest you get a new one. it is completely preposterous for any md to suggest that and your not smoking in your original preganancy likely had nothing to do with you preecleampsia.

My ex wife's OBGYN told her that she "should" quit smoking during her pregnancy, but if she needed to, it would be okay to smoke, alot less, during her pregnancy, b/c the stress of quitting cold turkey would be more detrimental for the babies. So this isn't the first time I've heard of this. Then again, look where it's left my son...Asthmatic

I have never heard a more ridiclous piece of medical advice in my whole life.

Smoking is harmful during pregnancy, period. There is no beneficial effect to continuing to smoke.

My business partner and I have had the seatbelt debate several times (only pertaining to adults). He feels that it is an invasion of personal freedom. My only rebuttal to this is the transitive increase in automobile insurance. If seat belts reduce the number of injuries and deaths due to vehicle accidents thus keeping medical costs down due to accidents thus keeping automobile insurance down for everyone. This, in turn, makes it okay in my mind for the government to make it mildly punishable to not wear your seat belt.

Not buckling children up is a bad choice in my opinion.

wtf?? I suppose since they died in the accident you can debate it all you want but who would really say "if they would have been thrown from the vehicle they might have survived."

Personally I'll take my chances with the seatbelt rather than have someone scrapping gravel out of the mushball that used to be my brain before I flew through the window.

Did our parents smoke in the house when we were little kids? Yes and we somehow turned out ok.

Did we drive in our parents car without seatbelts as little kids? Yes, and we survived.

When we were teenagers and in our 20s and even now did we ALL drink and drive while drunk? Yes and we somehow survived.

HOWEVER...3 wrongs do not make a right. It should be clear that it would be better for all concerned if...
1. Parents did not smoke in the house with their kids.
2. Children wore seatbelts.
3. People DID NOT drive while drunk.

These are not personal freedom issues, they are common sense issues. Just because a person "got away with" certain idiotic behaviors in the past does not make it ok to repeat said behaviors.

Is there anyone that believes it is ok to drive drunk and smoke around children. I'd love to hear your rational.

As far as the seatbelt issue goes I'm sure there are statistics supporting their usage but I don't have those facts at my fingertips.

Interesting thread to say the least. l

But good interesting, thought-provoking discussion all around. Great thread.

My neighbor also does that same Bahamamama routine. "I smoked when I was pregnant with the 1st girl and she turned out alright". Stupid F'n kid is lazy as hell, tempermental, and is already starting to pork out at 15. Of course, non of these things could possibly have anything to do with her mom smoking while she was pregnant, but mom thinks the kids alright.

I'm sure there are a billion different situations where a safety measure of some sort actually killed someone along the way.

1 example
The flu shot kills a few people out of how many hundreds of thousands or millions that get the shot.

One more thing

A freeking bus weighs a HELL OF A LOT MORE than any car. It's going to give out and also absorb an impact. It's not going to move to far unless a freeking train hits it. (like what happened here a few years back)

Anybody can justify anything they do with themselves or others in their lives. Just keep kidding yourselves about smoking and seatbelts. The laws of natural selection will weed out those with incorrect thought processes.

I've also had the life experience of being in a lot of accidents. Most of my working life has involved a lot of driving. I currently own three work vehicles and am on the road constantly. Many of you more rural types don't come across as many foreigners as people in bigger cities do. Legal or illegal these dopes have no clue how to drive. Nor do they have a concept of what a safe vehicle is. I've been to court a number of times involving accidents that weren't my fault and Julio decides not to show up. There is no way of tracking him or coming after him. He has no worries. He'll continue being stupid and ignorant and get into another accident and another.

The latest thing here is for aliens, Polish, Spanish, Oriental, to get there license in Michigan. Wisconsin and Indiana have cracked down on giving away licenses to illegals, and I think they are tied in together with Illinois as far as everyones driving record. These people fvck up here and then just go get a legit license in Michigan.

Then they breed.
