Nice post hornsfan2 and i will answer few of your questions.
First of all, this is a "young" USC team. USC fans did not expect USC to make a realistic NC run. Yes we knew USC was already talented, but its very hard to replace a Heisman winning QB and your #1 defensive player. Also all 3 running backs graduated and completely new secondary. In addition, USC is starting a QB with ZERO game experience and is only a soph. USC fans expected the next 2 years to contend for a NC because USC is returning basically everybody next year. SCARY!
Why did USC lose to CAL? Background info. The game was @ CAL, and Tedford is an awesome up and coming head coach. Watch out for CAL in the future. Very good offensive minded head coach. Cal had this game circled and threw the book at USC. The excelled and played almost flawless (even Tedford admitted it). After this game, Cal tanked because they put everything into this game. Now to the game in brief summary.
For starters, our new qb played horrible for the first 2.5 quarters and CAL jumped out to a 21- 7 lead. Not to make excuses, but the refs made 2 horrible PF calls and a crucial holding call on OT that hurt USC. But no excuses cuz thats part of the game. USC was down 21-7 at half and started coming back late in the 3rd q. USC was down by 3 with 2min. left and had 3rd and 2 on Cal 12 and did not get it. USC tied game with field goal. First OT USC got ball first and was running down CAL throat until our soph. RB fumbled on the goal line and Cal recovered. (only fumble this year for USC). USC fortunate to block field goal of Cal. 2nd OT both teams scored a TD (Cal scored theres on a 3rd and 6 with nice TD PASS). 3rd OT USC got horrible holding penalty, and USC kicker missed a 39 yard field goal. CAL kicker (who made a 52 yarder earlier in game), made a game winning 37 yard field goal. Game was put on ESPN as instant classis. USC played horrible, CAL played very well, game went into 3 OT's, USC blew golden opportunities and lost the game. Not that bad of a loss for a "YOUNG" USC team.
As for USC beating any SEC team by double digits. I firmly believe that, and USC already beat AU 23-0 @ AU. USC has much better team now! Yes other SEC teams are better than AU, but I think OU is the only team in the country that would give USC trouble. LSU could upset USC, but if they were playing next weekend, and USC was 3pt favorite, I prob. would bet 2-3 times my normal wager.
If I am going to bet $1000 on USC to win NC next year, i better believe USC has 75% to win it. USC simply will be loaded next year. But thats not very important talk right now.
As for USC and OU. I think OU has not seen a "team" like USC. Also, i do not think USC has seen a team like OU. USC has seen great passing teams, great rushing teams, great offensive minded head coaches, and great balanced teams offensively. I do not think OU has seen an offensive team like USC which would be interesting to see if the OU defense could stop USC. If they do, I def. tip my hat to them. I can go into great matchup analysis but i will wait until USC is playing OU in sugar bowl.
All in all, i think too many fans are not respecting USC enough because of the Cal loss. Fans should see this is a VERY YOUNG USC team, and a team that improved and bounced back right away. Fans should respect and fear that. USC has not even come close to peaking yet this year and USC is blowing teams away.
FIGHT ON!!!!!!!!!!!!
