Is weight gain inevitable after you quit smoking? What causes this?

Answer

from Edward C. Rosenow III, M.D.

It's fairly common to gain weight after quitting smoking, especially in the first few months ? but it isn't inevitable.
The nicotine in cigarettes acts as an appetite suppressant. The nicotine may slightly increase your metabolism as well. When you quit smoking, your appetite and metabolism return to normal ? which may lead you to eat more and burn fewer calories. Also, your ability to smell and taste food improves after you quit smoking. This can make food more appealing, which may lead you to eat more. And if you substitute snacking for smoking, the calories may quickly add up.
To avoid weight gain when you quit smoking, make diet and exercise part of your quit-smoking plan. It may help to:
  • Get moving. Include physical activity in your daily routine. Just 30 minutes of moderate exercise each day not only burns calories but helps relieve withdrawal symptoms and cravings.
  • Make wise food choices. Plan good-for-you meals and snacks, including plenty of fruits and vegetables. Eat smaller portions. Limit sweets and alcohol.
  • Keep your mouth busy. Chew on celery, carrot sticks, flavored toothpicks or sugarless gum.
  • Track your eating habits. Keep a food diary, including when, what and how much you eat every day.
Above all, remember that the health benefits of being smoke-free far exceed the problems associated with even moderate weight gain. Lung damage and heart disease are irreversible ? weight gain is not.

My weight will not come off like it used to. I am so disgusted I went to register fatjacksports.com this morning but it was already taken. I was going to do what that owner did and just redirect it to this domain.

Maybe I'll just throw in the towel and go with the fat look. :sadwave:

Proper weight transfer on your drives could prove weight gain as beneficial. Chicks dig the long ball. Ask john Daly :sadwave:

Are you moving, making wise food choices, keeping your mouth busy and tracking your eating habits?

Sorry Jack. . . Vinnie got me off track with mean, hateful and personal attacks.

Is your 1,500 calorie/day thing not working?

Lost 12 pounds easily and then came to a complete halt. actually the last 10 days I fucking gained 3 pounds eating only 1500 cals a day. :sadwave:

I'm eating healthy and am more active than I've been in years and I'm stagnated.

Gained a ton of weight last time I quit and then when I started again I had the same stupid habit with about 30 extra pounds.

I'm sure walking a golf course did you some good today :toast:

this past Tues. was 9 weeks without a cig..

first few days I destroyed the frig and pantry..

In a two weeks time I had a belly started for the first time in my life..

AINT HAPPENING..upped my work hours to at least 10 hours manual labor at least 5 days a week..last two days 12 hours and 11 hours hard labor..rock..trees..lawn..mulch..rooting digging and new privacy fence..crete..:00hour

No belly... no chest pains...plenty of energy and a great desire to consume great food..

TRY THIS WEIGHT LOSS PLAN IN CONJUNCTION WITH YOUR QUITTING OF THE CIGS..

I RECOMMEND IT HIGHLY..

WORKS..:142smilie

EVERY TIME WITHOUT FAIL..
