Eric Steger qualifies for U.S. Amateur Championships
Eric Steger (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville H.S.), a junior member of the Ball State University men's golf team, and Ball State alums Kenny Cook (2000-03) and Todd Pieri (1997-2000) have qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championships Aug. 24-30.
The U.S. Amateur will be played at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., on the par 70, 7,093-yard course.
Steger won the U.S. Amateur Sectional Qualifier at Coldstream Country Club in Cincinnati, Ohio, with a 76-68=144. He is one of 312 players participating in the U.S. Amateur Championships, and one who advanced by virtue of one of 99 sectional qualifying sites. Steger tallied a 74.45 average for the Cardinals last season, and posted one top-10 and five top-25 finishes for Ball State.
Cook tied for first at the Dayton, Ohio, sectional qualifier. He posted a two-round total 140 at Moraine Country Club to advance to the U.S. Amateur. Cook was a two-time All-Mid-American Conference selection for the Cardinals as a junior and senior. He was also named the Travis J. Smith Most Valuable Player for the Cardinals as a junior and senior.
