Never been there

Never been there

Have you been there lately? I have not been since it moved a few years ago.

Thanks for your good reads here.

Neighbors say best Stone crab in Vegas and old Vegas feel.....might be worth a look see.:0074

Made it out to free view day at Nascar Las Vegas Speedway, never seen a car race event. North of strip about 20-25 miles, Kobalt 400. Lots of 700+H.P. trial action coupled with flyovers of F-15's from Nellis....Nascar, Beer, Jet Fighters, WHAT could possibly go wrong?
Neon Garage was open, close up look at cars and computer geek mechanics tweaking the rides.
Oct 11-12 is the scheduled date for the big old time air show if you are out Vegas way.

Just finished nice first time everyday 7pm hold-em tourney at Stratosphere.......$70 including $20 add-on, decent free pizza; not smokey at all, good dealers, fun players...well worth a look for cheap poker entertainment....finished 5th for about 2 bills.

Talk about a busy day....2 five hour energy bottles worth....:142smilie

Hawaiian Oxtail soup at Downtown California Casino

Hawaiian Oxtail soup at Downtown California Casino

All I can say is WOW!!! If you are downtown gambling late, do this.

Huge soup bowl filled with hearty meat falling off the bones, beefy broth, onions, carrots, celery and blanched peanuts.

Comes with side of Cilantro, Ginger and big scoop of "Sticky Rice."

This is one Grandma would be proud of...be HUNGRY, monster portion.

I appeared to be the only non-Hawaiian in the entire restaurant, bowls of oxtail soup were flying out of the kitchen, I know why. Served 11pm -8 am daily.

Breakfast specials were NY strip and eggs, $6.29
Pancakes eggs meat hash browns $3.99

I had the Mahi-Mahi few days back, fried in egg batter, it covered half the plate; with salad bar $9.99, scrumptious.

This Cal diner is becoming our go to place for flat out delicious cheap eats.

Casino has decent table games, loose slots, winnable video poker and if you are not doing good here, upstairs is a walkway to the Main Street casino.

?Great Hotel for the Price?
x.gif
Reviewed 3 weeks ago
For $37 bucks a night average on a weekend this hotel is great. The hotel is located a block of the Freemont Street experience which is perfect for not being in the crowds. The room was simple and clean and the bed was soft with king sized pillows. Cleaning staff was excellent. We stayed in the West Tower room 2146 and road noise can be heard as the freeway is not far from the hotel. I will definitely stay again if I can get an odd number room on the West tower.

Lotus of Siam

Lotus of Siam

Had a taste for Thai food....our regular choice is Weera Thai, just minutes west of Palace Station.
Totally a family run experience.

I am not that adventuresome with Thai food.
Basic Pad Thai ( wok fried noodles, sauce, peanuts, fried egg, bean sprouts) tossed with various meats, seafood, makes me happy.
Go to Thailand it is basic street food.

Thai chiles are among the hottest on the planet, every Thai restaurant
I have been to will ask you how you want it spiced, usually on a scale of 1-10, 2 or 3 works for me.

Lotus of Siam is in the same center as the Pasty shop I reviewed previously, just east past old Sahara casino, take right on Commercial St.

Opens for lunch 11:30 sharp...

Walk in first thing you are asked is "Buffet" or "menu".
First time there I say "Don't Know"....

The buffet station is oddly placed by the front entrance and awkward to navigate.....thus they apparently seat you accordingly.
After quick inspection, chose the buffet....$11.95.

Small but fairly tasty, the spiced minced chicken was very addictive.
Pad Thai noodles were thin and just Ok...Thai Omelet was very good.
Spring rolls OK, fried rice OK, lots of veggie options....tempura style.
Salad and fruit bar were an after thought. Fried banana was wrapped in a spring roll wrap, interesting but just ok.

As we were eating, we saw some interesting menu entrees walk by.
Lotus of Siam might be worth a second try, the menu is very extensive.
Prices were reasonable, simple beef Pad Thai was $9.95.
Huge spiced shrimp dishes were $16.95.

As for the buffet, not sure if every day is the same, but I would not
go back for it, better options are available.

This year vacation winding down quickly, "winter" weather was fabulous...lately the sunny 70's have become very routine.
Hometown Oklahoma's spring and summer is always an adventure, our Vegas adopted Havanese dog "Sumo" is in for a huge eye opening adjustment....

Venetian-Palazzo Grand lux review

Venetian-Palazzo Grand lux review

There is a Grand Lux Cafe at both sister properties Venetian-Palazzo.

I have eaten there several times, it is always very, very good.

Yesterday I took wife to Venetian, cashed in some of my poker dinner comp points and had a fabulous lunch.

I had a meal for the ages....INDOCHINE Shrimp and Chicken...

Fresh Jumbo Shrimp and Chicken, Sauteed with Onions, Sweet Ginger.
Covered with a Mild Curry sauce enhanced with Plum Wine, and cream sauce. It was topped with Cherries and Apricots, served with rice. It was a veritable "explosion of flavors"....portion was huge, brought half home. it was $19.95

Wife had Crispy Caramel Chicken....Thai Caramel sauce, Mushrooms, Onions, Red Chiles, Garlic and Ginger......monstrous portion, very fresh chicken breast chunks....super yummy, $16.95...it would have fed 3 people.

Their menu is here, if you are nearby, you owe it to yourself to get a super delicious meal, EVERYTHING is scrumptious.

http://www.grandluxcafe.com/menu.htm

Dogs woke us up to a huge windstorm, it is going to be a 2 day weather event.....constant 25-50 mph.
Weather channel announced it as a "cold front"...instead of 83 degrees and sunny, we will only hit 70.... I guess cold is open to local interpretation.

Would not want to miss an early start on Tornado season....:142smilie

Actually, 4 months of Crazy Vegas is enuff...not a day goes by without a murder or 2, Metro cops wasting someone, Police copters searching, robberies, drug, prostitution busts, all of the worst of society on a grand scale.
God bless the tourists...if they ever wise up, lights out Vegas.

My gated 55+ complex is more like a tomb, I actually sunbathed nude for the hell of it a couple days ago (not a pretty site) in the 6 foot walled back yard, talk about living on the edge....:scared

Upside is the amazing weather, 70's and sunny became routine.
Made some new friends, adopted a new dog, ate some fab food, had fun gambling, life is good.

Tule Springs & Floyd Lamb Park......"Local Oasis"

Tule Springs & Floyd Lamb Park......"Local Oasis"

Something other than desert exists nearby.....

How about lakes, green grass, large trees, cool breezes, fish and ducks, picnic cookhouses, horse shoe pits.....closed my eyes and briefly thought I was in Oklahoma on a wonderful spring day.

Spent 3 hours here in the shade peacefully watching people and enjoying the escape.....bicycling, skating, cook-outs, fishing, hiking, volleyball, duck feeding, great place to "just be" as my old hippie friends would say.

Just 2 miles off 95 (Durango exit 93) is a true Oasis (Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs) $6.00 per car entry fee, State Park.

Here is article from local news regarding history of the area.

LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- When you think of fossils, Las Vegas may not be the first thing that comes to mind.

But one of the most important Ice Age archaeological sites in the world is Tule Springs, a 30-minute drive north of the Las Vegas Strip.

It's a site so rich in fossils that scientists from around the globe come here to explore it. While plentiful, finding these ancient artifacts is a painstaking process.

Scientists look for what walked here all those years during the last two Ice Ages over the last 225,000 years, when this area was a marsh land, with abundant water.

There were Columbian mammoths,Giant Condors, Pre-historic horses, saber-tooth cats, the ground sloth, short-faced bears, camels and the American lion.
Tens of thousands of years ago, the area was inhabited by early tribal humans.
Over the next 10,000 years, temperatures rose steadily, rivers and springs vanished, and the desert was born. And the search was on for ancient fossils.

Fossils were discovered on this site for the first time in the 1930s. But only recently have they been given another look after this area was considered for development during the home-building boom of a decade ago. But the homes never went up.

Scientists wanted to find out exactly what was out here first, and they were surprised with what they found.

While doing a sight survey here in summer 2011, paleontologist Dr. Josh Bonde of UNLV found something very interesting sticking out of a rock -- a bone. It turns out it was the bone of a dire wolf, the first one ever discovered in the state.

As students dig into the past two Ice Ages, when the Earth was warming and cooling at a dramatic rate, Dr. Bonde says it has modern-day implications as our climate is changing again.

He says by digging here, researchers can predict the future of plants and animals from looking at the past.

Linq Ferris Wheel opened today, for those that are interested...$24.99 a pop for a 30 minute ride....yawn.... Express pass $59.99....each "pod" holds up to 40 people, in air conditioned comfort.
We will see come August how that comfort holds up at 3 pm in full desert sun.
Better be young, agile and fairly sober to enter, as wheel does not come to complete stop....

Bellagio Spring garden display is up and running....really gorgeous floral displays....Live butterfly exhibit is pretty awesome... (Good place to get
some brownie points with your significant other).

Thanks for all these updates from you and the feedback of Dr. Feelgood. Anything like the butterfly exhibit during this week coming up? Look forward to some great food, and any new choices you have had the past couple months. Thanks again, great information. :0008

Mercadito---Red Rock Hotel

Mercadito---Red Rock Hotel

Went out to play with the Ol lady last night at Red Rock Casino. We tossed 20 each into the Poker machines and then went to try a new Mexican joint called Mercadito.

The place is wide open with small tables and some outdoor seating. It is loud in there, especially if you have a table of 12 20 somethings celebrating a birthday right behind you. I was fine with it, but the Ol lady mentioned how loud it was.

We started with a salsa sampler (you get to choose 3 different flavors). Went with a tamatillo, a habanero, and a smoked poblano trio. For 3.50 it was perfect....YES I SAID 3.50....you get about a 1/4 cup of each flavor and fresh chips. Perfect start as they all had a distinctly different flavor and I didn't eat a whole bag of chips....

I am a devout 1800 coconut tequila drinker and nobody has it out here but their selection is vast. They make a premixed house margarita and it's 7.50...the waiter gave us a sample and it was just a bit too sweet for us so we just ordered a Hornitos/soda and a splash of sour....for some reason mine tasted like cucumber but it was good so I drank it.

Their menu is small compared to most Mexican places out here...a few salsas, guac, tacos, and some sides....keep it simple stupid and they do and they do it right.

We went with the tacos....they give you 4 for 14.50 and you must get the same taco in all four (ie shrimp, or beef, or chicken, or fish...etc....). We went with the cameron (shrimp). The best part is they serve them in lettuce cups for us Paleo eaters (low carb)....or traditional in the shells. We went with the lettuce cups and they didn't hold up but they were tasty and I just used a fork and knife to eat (unlike my usual hands---they are nature's utensils ya know).

We also got a side of fried plantains and they were delish.

The whole meal was good. Very tasty and satisfying and with 2 drinks it came to 50 bucks...65 with tip....

nice little place off strip

Hi Scott

Hi Scott

Thought about you when the Red Sox did the wheeling and dealing....

Good review, sounds like a good Red Rock food option...I do like their poker room a lot.

Glad you survived the recent "flood"...keep the reviews coming....

I've eaten at both STK and N9NE.....neither impressed me much....if you want a good steak (a phenomenal one to be exact) you have to travel off strip about 4 miles on Sahara to a place called Herbs and Rye between 5-8 pm....for 24-28 bucks you can get an 18 oz ribeye and one side....you will pay 50-60 a either of the places I mentioned and have to pay a la carte for sides.....if money is no option, stay on the Strip and enjoy, but if you want value, seek a knowledgeable local....
