I'm not an organizer, and I'm not very creative with this sort of stuff, but I do have other talents (serious!) that might come in handy if any of this ever comes to fruition.

I've been trying to find something related to my profession that's EASY and that I could possibly do from home. Haven't found it yet. :sadwave:

that's the problem. I know lots of 'stuff', but none of it is conducive to making money unless I have a regular job.

I am an internet manager for a group of 36 affiliate TV stations and believe that I could be making more money running my own business. I am certain that I would need a business partner(s) and I do have a few ideas.

I believe the best way to create a new business is to assemble a team and present an idea to a capital investment firm. (Unless someone has a better way of raising capital)

If this is a serious issue here, I would love to continue a conversation via email or elsewhere.

Here are a few thoughts that come from unique business's I have had insured that have been quite successful.

One I'd look into is after hours office cleaning--doesn't take much start up capital--biggest problem is finding dependable help--resulting in you having to do lots of work when employees don't show up--

Have one client that does tree trimming/removal in summer and contracts snow removal from business's and malls in winter. He gets paid by contract-whether it snows much or not.-on additional note he does subcontract work for telephone and power companies and makes absolute killing in ice/wind storms on clearing lines.

--a couple that involve little work--but need lots of cash on start-up
Storage buildings--
Self service garage--for people who want to repair their own cars--but need tools-hoist etc--
liabilty ins quite high on this business however.

The best opportunity I look for someone to fill in coming months--would be security contract for shipping companies going through area around somolia.

With payoffs and increased ins premium for shipping companys this would be a no brainer and would be very lucrative. Would think 5 man team per boat would be more than adaquate.

Only problem is petroleum shipping companies will NOT allow firearms aboard their ships, fearing sparks from gunshots will cause an explosion.

It would have to be non-firearm methods. Someone who excels in using high performance bow and arrow would do well on this, provided he can do well in hiding as there are plenty of hiding space in a ship. Bow and arrow hunters would do well in this venture.

Jack - you hit my sweet spot here.

A couple of comments first:

Woodson - the iPhone app store is much like the lottery now. I think the number is somewhere around 1% that ever turn a profit and a much smaller percentage that make someone rich. It's proving tougher to get people to pay for apps when there are so many free ones. The really good ones that hit the right itch and are marketed correctly are doing quite well, though. I have two friends who have an app called GPS Assassins waiting to be approved for the app store right now.

It is a GPS-enabled peer to peer game where you snipe people. Short range weapons work within one mile; long range weapons up to 5 miles. They are planning on white labeling for private games at large events (like NFL games, etc.). It's been awesome working with them on their beta environment, but there's really no chance of knowing their success rate at this point.

On Ideas in general: this is a great way to start conversations, but a good idea is worth absolutely zero. The two main factors that must be considered first are revenue model and acquisition cost.

DTB - self-service garage. That is an extremely interesting. Do they pay a monthly membership fee and get a certain amount of rack time? That is trul an awesome idea, but I wouldn't know the first thing about my two questions above. This could be a great franchising opportunity as well. I love it! And I don't know SHIT about working on cars.

Woodson - if you want to chat about the CLC, get my email addy from Jack.

Great thread so far guys. This is the type of shit I think about all day. Outside of my company, I also do consulting work for two small but growing companies. We're trying to work out the details of franchising one of them. I envision it being a great franchising opportunity for women.

What about accompanying ships that don't go to port?

At first I laughed at the bow and arrow comment, but that may have legs.

A lot of money to be made on Apple Iphone apps right now... ALOT of $$$...

GOD IS THIS TRUE!!! I own the iphone 3g and the apps are flying out like crazy, theres some great ones out there, but theres plenty of room left for a few clever ones, just a simple app that you cant go without. I always thought if there was a way to play poker (with real money) on the phone the server would jam, people now a day are poker crazy and who doesnt have an internet ready phone...thru paypal have your account refreshed and burn it up playing madjack poker app. So simple but the right app would have our kids kids rolling in money.

I always had an idea but the guys here are too manly for it most likely. It involves helping the elder...sort of just helping out, keeping track of whos ripping them off and why are they spending $50 a mnth on oxygen when they only use $10 worth...so basically being like an accountant and an organizer for them, Ive always had a big heart and hate hearing or seeing when someone rips off an elder person, thats how it derived..but its just a thought and I always say....thoughts dont need paper to form ideas.
A really cheap and easy way to get into business is to open a maid cleaning service---what hitch you put to it is up to you, like Chippendale cleaners or All female cleaners...chicks in catsuits cleaning my house dont sound bad. Of course a NAtional chain would be something everyone could be involved in, But I had a female friend open one (no fancy hitch just she and a friend running around in a Dodge Neon with a trunk full of cleaning products) just fucking around with and a buddy of hers...in 3 weeks they are doing almost 1K per week each, and its just word of mouth.....its nice because if you clean well your clients will surely drum up more business for you.

GREAT IDEA JACK----ESPECIALLY in times where the employment is shit. This thread may have legs...I have an inventive idea to help road safety in snowy or icey whether but I'll save that for the more serious discussions:SIB

A very good friend of mine goes deer hunting using high performance bow and arrow, preferring that methods over guns....and he is darn good at it too.

And getting a security contract from those petroleum shipping would give him a very nice bank account. Only problem is he is 59 years ago with several health problems.

Have an idea they may change their minds--probably stems from insurance contracts.

Reason I would change my mind if ins co or them.

The only time there would be gunshots is if attacked by pirates--and from a logical standpoint would think that the incoming gunshots/rocket propelled grenades would be much more dangerous than outgoing from well trained teamed. :SIB

Dawg The only one I've seen is in Missouri--and they charge patrons by the hour (was $20 and hour) they also supply all tools. His chief complaint was theft of tools and liabilty insurance. The plus side is he only needs one empoyee there usually he or his wife--to operate hoist and watch tools.

Couldn't he have a tool checkout bin and hold a
license or $50 refundable deposit for tools?

Not one advertized. They if there is any must be doing it on a under the covers pay cash. But I was surprised I didn't find any. Or Im blind And that maybe.

Something I've considered lately is to be the
McDonalds of tax prep. For example, doing most
returns for $69.95 w/ more extensive returns at
$99. The 69.95 is close to the cost of the so
called free ones and training tax preparers is easy.
If something's really complicated, make a deal
with a local cpa to refer that person to.

When you go HR Block, you're treated like cattle
because the preparers pay are somewhat base on
volume. You could be friendly and fast. Most
returns are easily done in 30 mins. and repeat
customers are like gold. If they haven't changed
jobs or residences, the updated software carries
that info over each year and makes input really
easy.

These could be done everywhere, too.

Had a buddy in the 70's while in college found a place like this in Manhattan, KS ....not sure what the rate was....

From what I remember it was a nice shop (70's) vented exhaust tubes, plenty of room to work not just a garage, 20 stalls, my guess and was always packed in a college town.

cars were simplier then as well (edit)
