MSNBC suspended "Countdown" host Keith Olbermann Friday after the news that he donated to three Democratic candidates.

"I became aware of Keith's political contributions late last night," MSNBC President Phil Griffin said in a statement. "Mindful of NBC News policy and standards, I have suspended him indefinitely without pay."

[Related: MSNBC's election night lineup criticized]

Olbermann gave the maximum individual donation of $2,400 to three candidates in Tuesday's election: Arizona Reps. Gabrielle Giffords and Raul Grijalva and Senate hopeful Jack Conway, who lost in Kentucky to Republican Rand Paul. (Grijalva appeared on Olbermann's "Countdown" on Oct. 28, the same day the host donated to his campaign; Conway was last a guest in May).

Olbermann, in a statement to Politico, said that he "did not privately or publicly encourage anyone else to donate to these campaigns nor to any others in this election or any previous ones." Also, Olbermann said he had not "previously donated to any political campaign at any level."

But the revelation raised clear ethical issues.

Olbermann, a liberal commentator, gives his opinions each night on the air. But NBC News editorial staffers -- like journalists at most news organizations -- are forbidden from giving to political candidates. Also, Olbermann anchored election coverage Tuesday night without disclosing that he'd given to candidates who were running for office.

By punishing the network's biggest star, Griffin showed how little tolerance there is for hosts to make undisclosed political contributions while covering those political races.

An MSNBC spokesman told The Upshot that The Nation's Chris Hayes, an MSNBC contributor who has filled in before for Olbermann and Rachel Maddow, will host Friday night's show. Hayes has spoken publicly before about donating $250 to a friend's Congressional campaign in Alabama. He made the last donation in 2009, before becoming an MSNBC contributor. [UPDATE: MSNBC now says Hayes will not be subbing tonight]

MSNBC already attracted criticism this week for having its liberal hosts and commentators anchor election night coverage. Typically, nonpartisan journalists anchor major news events?such as election results?while commentators like Bill O'Reilly (Fox News) or James Carville (CNN) offer analysis.

It's ironic that Olbermann gave to political candidates after criticizing Fox News because its owner, Rupert Murdoch, gave $1 million donation to the Republican Governors Association. "Fox News has put its money where its mouth is," Olbermann said in an August segment that questioned the network's impartiality.

In October, Olbermann again raised the issue of Murdoch's donations, during an interview with Democratic Rep. James Clyburn. Olbermann asked whether there was "a legislative response to the idea that there is a national cable news outlet that goes beyond having a point of view and actually starts to shill for partisan causes and actually starts to donate to partisan groups of one party."

I have posted on here many times in the past that I think this guy is the worst of the major partisan "journalists", left or right.

The funniest part is how he lambasts Limbaugh for his drug hypocricy, and is constantly all over Fox News for partisan "journalism".

What a freakin hypocrite:mj07: I love it!!!

Cie, I agree that Olbermann's about as partisan as they come but I think most leftists and moderates recognize that about him. SNL's lampooned his over-the-top style many times. Personally, I don't watch him for that very reason.

I really fail to see how Olbermann is any more divisive than Beck/Limbaugh/Hannity/Savage though. The problem with all these over-the-top guys is that their followers fail to recognize that like professional wrestling, it's a "performance" for ratings. It's entertainment, not journalism.

I cant take much of Olbermann

Sure was stupid of him to donate money like that putting his job in the discussion.

He is just suspended though. Doubt it stops him from spewing again.

That is what I mean. These guys are entertainers, but ko seems to fancy himself a journalist.

Savage is the most hateful of the bunch in my eyes.

I think the thing to take from this is that NBC has a policy against political donations and they suspended an employee for doing it. That seems to be much closer to fair and balanced than well, need I say it?

Olbermann and the rest of the MSNBC talking heads are unapologetic in their bias, as are the ones on Faux News. CNN leans left, as well. But these are not news shows, they are commentary and news-commentary. I don't think Olbermann pretends to be unbiased, or has he ever. He's the most over-the-top of any of the left commentators and does it for ratings. Brian Williams gave a good interview on Letterman talking about this, and that's why these major networks stack their decks this way.

NBC has a policy against donations. Rupert Murdoch and Faux news MAKES news with millions in donations to conservative groups and political races. They had an employee go from their employ to become press secretary for the Bush administration, then hired him back immediately after he left the administration - and soon got the first personal interview with Bush.

NBC followed through with an appropriate policy decision, and should be commended for it. IMO. I don't see why this is that big a deal, really. Other than to point out more hypocrisy in "fair and balanced" land.

I think you've hit upon the key point here Chad. Olbermann's suspension reveals a glaring difference in ethical standards and practices at NBC and Fox.

The difference is the guy bends over backwards to get the truth out and show naive nitwits what a bunch of liars the other side is. When he first started he was just fine but now he goes a little overboard because it is just sickening that people are this stupid and believe every thing the neo-cons say. If the truth isn't that big of deal in a person life than they will hate the guy. If u want straight talk ya like the guy.

Listen King of "Chalk", when u say something on the Internet it is in writing and ya can't take it back. If a guy post he was in jail for killing three people but got out on appeal, I have the right to call him a killa. He is the one who wrote it in the first place. Now a guy like Maggot who has no proof a guy is a child molester but calls him one anyway, that my King of Chalk friend is uncalled for.

If Olberman didn't constantly point out Fox News bullshit so I child could tell, we would have more idiots roaming the streets.
