CNN) -- Sujit Bhattacharya knew he felt sluggish and had trouble putting on his socks and shoes. One day, when he tried on a pair of size 30 shorts, his wife pointed out that they fit only under his belly.

Sujit Bhattacharya says losing weight has improved his frame of mind. He is shown in 2006, left, and 2007.

more photos ? Yet Bhattacharya, of Coppell, Texas, never paid attention to his weight problem until his doctor told him he had high cholesterol in summer 2006. His friends also told him that he had become heavy and needed to do something about it.

The feedback was upsetting, he acknowledged, but the combination of his friends' prodding and the cholesterol numbers motivated him to start trimming down his 193-pound frame.

"I needed some tough love: things I didn't want to hear but needed to hear," Bhattacharya said.

He researched how to lose weight extensively on the Internet, including CNN.com's health section. He learned that 3,500 calories add up to one pound of weight and tried to figure out how to eat to decrease his daily caloric intake.

Instead of eating a few large meals every day, he ate six small meals, keeping track of how many calories he consumed. He had been eating more than 2,500 calories a day, perhaps 3,000, so he cut this down to 1,500 calories a day. That meant losing a pound every two or three days.

Typical day in Sujit Bhattacharya's diet:

Morning: glass of low-fat milk with Nestle Quik (150 calories)
Exercise: Lemonade and Gatorade afterward (50 calories)
Late morning: snack of a piece of fruit (75 calories)
Lunch: lean piece of chicken with two vegetables and rice (500 calories)
Late-afternoon: snack of Healthy Choice fudge bars (90 calories)
Dinner: spaghetti with a meatball or two (500 calories)
Night: bowl of cereal like Froot Loops (150 to 200 calories)

TOTAL: 1,515 to 1,565 calories "As long as you know how many calories you need and how many calories you eat, it's just math," he said.

He also included more fruits and vegetables in his diet and ate fewer fatty meats. For exercise, he changed his routine from three days a week of limited cardio and heavy weights to six days a week with the same heavy weights but increased cardio.

In six months, he lost 40 pounds. Since then, he's put on about 5 pounds of "good" or muscle weight but has otherwise sustained his new physique through diet and exercise.

Today, at age 39, he said he's starting to look more like when he was in high school.

Losing weight has improved Bhattacharya's overall frame of mind, he said. He also noticed that he doesn't get colds or the flu and fights off infections faster than before.

Sometimes Bhattacharya wonders why he didn't start losing weight earlier and can say only that he felt "fat, dumb and happy."

"I didn't understand what I was doing was hurting me," he said.

He actively encourages friends to try his weight loss method. One friend lost 20 pounds following his advice. See more photos of weight loss success stories from iReport.com ?

"What I tell friends is: You've got to have a burning platform, something to make you start, a goal or desire," he said. "For me, it was the bad cholesterol test and friends. Someone else may want to fit into a bikini in the summer."

Dietitians say they would encourage others to follow Bhattacharya's example of reducing calories and spreading them more throughout the day instead of eating big meals.

If you try it, make sure you have enough energy, feel good while doing it and eat foods you enjoy so you can stick to it long-term, said Dawn Jackson Blatner, a registered dietitian and spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association.

In fact, Bhattacharya did twice as well as the average person in a weight loss program, Blatner said. He lost 20 percent of his body weight in six months, beating the national average of 10 percent.

Tara Gidus, ADA spokeswoman and team dietitian for the NBA's Orlando Magic, recommends that women never eat fewer than 1,200 calories and men no fewer than 1,500 calories per day.

MayoClinic.com: Fitness and nutrition
She typically does not recommend cutting out 1,000 calories at a time, "but if someone is really motivated to lose weight and they eat snacks that are filling in between meals, then they can cut a significant number of calories, lose weight and not feel overly hungry," she said.

Blatner said she would also encourage anyone who wants a drastic diet change to consult a doctor.

Bhattacharya emphasizes that anyone can shed unwanted pounds as long as he or she compares the number of calories needed to maintain weight and the number of calories he or she eats.

"I firmly believe it is not hard to lose weight," he said.

I guess the key is to cut down calories.

His meals didnt seem too bad.

Day 3, blueberries and raspberries for breakfast with a shake. Will have some veggies and salad dressing for lunch and for dinner, a sweet potato with steamed veggies and a salad.

Nothing bad yet, but I'd love a mountain dew right now.

Keep it up my friend! You wont believe how good you are going to feel in a few days.

Curious what you are doing for your daily sweating??

Hang in there! It will be over before you know it

I have a somewhat physical job, which is good news and bad. I hurt my back again the other day moving some stuff. It seems pretty bad but I can walk ok, so I may end up trying to take walks, as bad as that sounds to me.

I went running a couple times 2 weeks ago and it felt really good, so this is really bumming me out.

I plan to go to the gym after work every day starting Monday...weightlifting...its tough to do cardio with a bad back. I'll figure it out. Did some situps the last couple days, but again, not much sweating there...

Those wings sound delicious. Although I think if I ate more than 20, I'd end up vomiting. You must be twice the man I am ;)

Day 4 today and things are good. The main thing I want is something to drink besides water and green tea. Milk, juice, soda, beer....anything would be great.

I've decided to allow myself the fish/chicken on Day 10 instead of 11. Mainly, just going to eat either fish or chicken beginning Saturday night instead of Sunday afternoon.

Really looking forward to next weekend. :)

Not too bad. I feel a little "empty" inside. Kind of like I'm hungry but not really.

What's the deal with the fish/chicken? I left the booklet at work. I think its "organic fish" and "free-range chicken".....is that right?

Day 6. Starting to get into a groove I guess. Getting used to it. I am sleeping good. I still wake up kind of tired, but earlier, although I am going to bed a LOT earlier too.

No sweet potato last night, first time for that. Skin is gradually getting healthier and a small but noticeable reduction in the gut.

I'd say week 1 has been a real success. I am looking forward to some chicken/fish this weekend!

Would really love a MOUNTAIN DEW right now! I want the taste, the texture, the sugar, the caffeine.

Really glad I'm on this plan though. When its over, I plan to just mix up the good and the bad. The biggest things I want to do is put a limit on things weekly. For example, 18 beers might be a limit, or three 2-liters of soda, etc. The other thing is to make sure I'm putting good things in, such as water and fruit. I eat vegetables normally, but I don't make fruit or water a habit at all.

So basically I see some areas I can really improve but at the same time not make me too strict that I can't enjoy life.

Overall, I needed so much of this. I needed a break from soda and alcohol. I needed more water and the supplements. I needed the fresh fruits and vegetables. And I needed the sleep.

So I can only imagine how great I will feel over the next 2 weeks.

Haven't weighed myself, but going to the gym tomorrow evening and they have a scale there. My back isn't better, its been on/off since I hurt it real bad over a year ago. But it feels a lot better than it did over the weekend. So I'm going to do some lifting tomorrow.

How bad are the prices for organic meat? I will say that the program on a whole is not cheap. Its hard to say b/c I haven't really kept up with everything. There is no meat, soda, alcohol to buy for the first 10 days so thats a plus. But organic butter, sea salt, organic salad dressing....all twice as much as regular.

America wonders why everyone is so fat. Because its usually way more expensive to eat good food.

Fruits and vegetables aren't that bad, but they start to add up when that's all your eating.

Worst thing you can do is buy stuff the store puts out for convenience. At first, I bought this tray with cherry tomatoes, celery, broccoli, and carrots.
It lasted 2 meals and I wasn't eating much.

Then I bought the same stuff but individually, paid less and will get at least 4 meals out of it.

Day 8. I want some real food.

Looking forward to Saturday evening. I plan to have an steak with steamed vegetables. Organic if not too pricey. I am thinking of relaxing just a little this Saturday evening and next, and having a white potato and a little mountain dew.

Overall its going good. I don't cook/eat a lot of fish, so Gibber, if you have any ideas about good stuff to buy, let me know...

Day 11. Relaxed a little last night, probably shouldn't have but oh well. The program is going good. Drank a lot of water during the day. Had some mountain dew last night and a steak and white potato with some peas.

Back to work today though. I begin taking the pills today too. 7 pills a day and I wish they would say if your supposed to take them all at once or space them out. Probably not a big deal but I will take 4 in the morning and 3 in the evening.

Definitely worth doing. You just have to go in knowing its only temporary...only 3 weeks. I'd hate to be anywhere close to this strict all the time.

But after the program is over, I will incorporate some things into my life to keep improving. I am seeing that minor adjustments in many areas over time make a significant difference.
