My Aunt Marge lost her battle

with Alzheimer's Disease at 9:18 a.m. today. She battled the disease for 17 years and is in a better place than she was ever offered here on Earth. While it was difficult to have much of a relationship with her due to her disease, she lead a very vibrant life prior to taking ill. She sang on Broadway, mingled with the Rat Pack and now she can dance with the angels.
It is funny though that my Mother, her sister, did go to see her last month and it is the first time my Aunt recognized anyone in twelve years. She lit up like a pinball machine when she saw my Mom for the first time that she could remember in 17 years. Very cool.

Sorry to hear. May she rest in peace. Horrible disease. My great grandmother and grandmother both had it. My grandmother died within a couple of years of diagnosis. My wife's grandmother has lived, if it can be called living, for 15 years since diagnosis. She has not recognized anyone in years.

Sorry to hear of your loss...it's a tough disease. The silver lining is that your family can grieve and move forward. My wife's father was diagnosed at the age of 49. It's been a long 13 years, he's in full time care now, a shell of his former self. My poor mother in law, dealing with this for so long, and yet she can't grieve until he's in a better place. Unless you live through this with a love one it's hard to imagine how long a road it can be.

Irrelevant side story but we were down the beach where her mom lives. 3 years ago this upcoming Wednesday. We had gone for a visit to see her dad and later that night my wife and I went out for dinner. One topic that came up was the 'best' way to go. I said, when it happens to someone I love, I'd rather it be quick than the long crushing road of Alzheimer's I'd witness her father and family travel. At 4am that morning my mom called and my dad had just had a heart attack and passed away. I decided..there is no good way, they all suck!

So sorry to hear this Cris. It's good to know she'll be in a better place. What I'll take from this is how great the feeling must have been for both your mom and your aunt when they realized she was cognizant for however long it was. Your mother will hold onto that forever... Sorry for your loss...

I saw my grandmother fight this HORRIBLE disease for 13 years and did not know anyone the last 8 and weighed 67 pounds when finally passed ...
