First play of the season. May but back later, but this line will most likely move up once people have a chance to research it. The most positive thing that Neuheisal or Chow have been able to say about the Oline is that they?re young. They?ve even tried to transfer a TE to C and they will be trying to protect whoever makes it out of the infirmary at QB for UCLA.

While Tennessee doesn?t have the best front 4, they do have the type of athletes at Dline that seem to only reside in the Essss-Seeeee-Seeeee which scares the hell out of people in these parts ? well at least me

Some quotes from the latest Bruin scrimmage

UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel said the running game had to be better.
Offensive coordinator Norm Chow said the pass protection needed to improve. Right tackle Nick Ekbatani chimed in by saying the blocking technique needed work.
No matter who was speaking, the offensive concern centered around UCLA's beleaguered offensive line.
There was also a fumbled snap recovered by the defense, and UCLA's quarterbacks were sacked eight times behind the often overwhelmed offensive line.
"I thought the effort was good, but I was not happy with the way we pass protected," Chow said. "But we would do some different things come game time. All in all, we got out of it healthy."
"Offensively, it raises your nervousness in terms of being able to run," Neuheisel said. "Given where we are with the offensive line and an inexperienced quarterback, you'd like to not put all the pressure on the throwing game. It'll be a huge deal for us to find a way to run the ball, going into the Tennessee game, with some consistency."

Tennessee will have some problems this year, but there?s not a chance they get shown in this game as it?s not a hostile environment and their offense will be playing with short fields and a likely lead.

UCLA offensive line dealt another blow
Kia suffers broken left hand but might play in opener. Neuheisel says line's status is 'concerning, no question about it.'

LOS ANGELES ? Two weeks ago, Coach Rick Neuheisel sounded confident his untested offensive line would soon be the most-improved area of his UCLA football team.

Fate is doing its best to make sure that doesn't happen.

A lengthy string of injuries to the line grew longer Tuesday when starting left tackle Micah Kia broke his left hand while blocking during a field-goal drill and left practice to go to the hospital.

The Bruins are saying Kia is probable for the Sept. 1 opener vs. Tennessee, but the injury is one more disruption to a unit desperately trying to find cohesion.

Before camp started, starting right tackle Sean Sheller tore a knee ligament and injured his ankle in an off-road vehicle accident and was lost for the year.

Scott Glicksberg, Nate Chandler and Mike Harris also have missed considerable time becauses of injuries. Starting tight end Logan Paulsen has yet to be cleared for contact because of a concussion.

Get the impression blocking could be an issue this year?

?We're past ?overly concerning,' ? Neuheisel said. ?On that Ouija Board of concerning, we're past, ?overly.' Yeah, this is concerning, no question about it.?

If Kia can't play against Tennessee, Brandon Bennett likely would fill in, according to offensive line coach Bob Palcic. That could leave the Bruins a tad susceptible to the Volunteers' pass rush.

Bennett has never played a down at the college level. The other starting tackle, Chandler, moved from tight end only three weeks ago and struggles to keep his weight above 270 pounds.

?I can't control injuries, but I've been hired to do a job,? Palcic said. ?The next guy steps up and I have to do the best coaching job I can to play a tough opponent.?

Quarterback Kevin Craft acknowledged he might have to use his feet to create time to throw.

?It's kind of a game-time thing. If you've got to scramble and make something happen with your feet, then you've got to make something happen,? Craft said. ?Ideally, we'd like to stay in there and hit things on time.?

TIGHT END CLEARED TO PLAY

Defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker acknowledges he wasn't happy when he saw the NCAA cleared Tennessee tight end Brandon Warren.

Warren, a transfer from Florida State, played against the Bruins in the 2006 Emerald Bowl with little impact, but earned some freshman All-America recognition after that season.

?I know he's a good player, so that's just another guy we've got to worry about,? Walker said.

Warren left Florida State in the spring of 2007 to be near his mother, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2005. Seminoles coach Bobby Bowden chose not to release him from his scholarship. Because he was not a full-time student in 2007, Warren needed waivers to play this year.

NOTES

Freshman offensive lineman Jeff Baca (Mission Viejo) was on crutches after injuring his left knee during Monday's practice when a defensive lineman rolled into him. Baca was scheduled for an MRI Tuesday night. ? Former UCLA track coach Jim Bush, 81, had to be treated by paramedics during Tuesday's practice, but declined to be taken to the hospital. He was treated for dehydration.

Good luck this season. I will more than likely pass on the Tenn game. They have the edge running the ball but I am wondering how effective Crompton will be on a bad peg. Appreciate your posts.

Cheers

I honestly don't think that they can make the number much higher without attracting UCLA money on principle alone. I had this circled in the beginning of the summer and the line came out exactly where I thought it would. Vols maybe headed into an ambush, but I gave up on being a sharp a long time ago

You need to have a motivated team to cover at 20+ point spread and Texas gave the first shout out to the Longhorns right after the New Orleans Bowl stating that they were going to Texas to win.

And then, he had to go here . . .

http://upsports.blogspot.com/2008/08/confidence-high-as-owls-prepare-for.html

"Once we step out on the field with Texas, the only ones who can help us is ourselves. Texas always has a very polished team that has great talent, but they aren?t tough, they aren?t a physically tough team."

"My defense will get to a point where they will be mean, nasty and ornery bastards and that?s what you need for Texas. Texas will move the ball with tit-for-tat, screens and options, but we?ll make them pay a price whenever they catch one of those dinky passes. We?ll put three hats on them and make them not want to get up, that?s the way to beat Texas."

Basically, Texas isn't so much

So while FAU has ALOT of experience back, they haven't had much success playing in the major settings going 0-7 over the past 2 years at BCS schools.

For all the reasons stated above (and not just because AR's on it . . . really :SIB ), I'm on the under in the UCLA game. I see Tennesee getting up early and going very basic in their offense to keep pressure off of Crompton

Tennessee/UCLA Under 46 One unit

While most domers are salivating over the fact that Michigan may have all of the troubles that the 2007 Notre Dame squad did, it's almost statistically impossible. Michigan will be solid in defense and special teams but their offensive line is a huge concern and implementing the spread won't be all that easy because their QB's look like . . .

and not so much like . . .

or . . .

umd19091406.jpg

looks to be another issue (tiny one :) )

Utah's offense has some power, but does stall against BCS competition (and the upper crest of the MWC). Michigan recruits some of the best athletes in the nation and their defense has them. Their problems against the spread in the first 2 games of 2007 were related to preparedness and seeing it in action on a daily basis will help erase some of their problems against the offense.

Probably wouldn't be playing these if they were being played on a Saturday in October, but opening night is opening night.

Vandy going on the road with an entirely new offensive line in a venue that's not used to a national audience against a BCS team. Tough spot for anyone, let alone breaking in an Oline with an unstable QB situation

Miami (OH) -3.5

3-point line movement in this game and taking the dog on principle alone. South Carolina had some rush D issues even before the injuries were in place and if the State offense can get some push, then they should control the ball and put Spurrier's son under some pressure with this on the sideline behind him

spurrier.steve.1.jpg

NC State +14

Tough game to give more than a touch based on history

Colorado State +11.5

. . . and that should be it :)
