Hey Everyone,

I've seen how helpful people here have been with other similiar post and just want to get some opinions on my current job situation.

Here's the deal. A recruiting company got me an interview with a top financial institute. I went to the interview and did well. The second interview did not go as well as the first but not that bad either. I called my recruiter and he said that I got the job and that I would be offered anywhere from 40K-45K. Okay, sounds good. The problem is that the company wants me to come in and find out if I like the feel of the company since I'm making a career change (I have a degree in engineering). My pay, $8 an hour during the test phase.

Well, this definitely did not sound good in to me so I called the recruiter and told him my situation. Well, he was baffled and told me to call the person I interviewed with. Okay.

I give him a call (he's also a manager but of a different location, just want to let you know that he wasn't somebody in human resources) and he tells me that I will be getting paid somewhere between 42K-43K. Okay.

Hmmm. WTF is going on. The branch I will be working for tells me $8 an hour during my test phase with no mention of an offer and I get told by both my recruiter and this branch manager that I have the job and the offer will be between 42K-43K.

What do you all think I should do? I start my test phase tomorrow. Should I go through the test phase and hope for the best or should I get something down in writing?

Thanks everyon.

I agree. I called my recruiter and told him about the $8 an hour and he was more surprised than I was. He's working on it now. I'll let you all know what happens. Thanks.

I'm sure the situations have changed alot since I had to go through a recruiter. There is usually a probationary period(90 days) before the hiring company has to fork over the recruiters commision. If things don't work out then the recruiter gets zero.

One thing i noticed in your second paragraph about where you mentioned the Company wanted you to get a feel of the Company. Please be aware that that is a two-way street.

I had trouble with my recruiter also. They feed you a lot of bs so be very careful. Eight bucks an hour sounds awfully low for a training period for a 45k job. Could be the location you're going to doesn't want you there and is trying to run you off.

Anyway, best of luck to ya.

That's what I thought too Chain Saw. I decided to get all the facts. I'm going in tomorrow but I came up with some loaded questions to ask the man that will clear things up. I think what happened was that I did so well on my initial interview and that branch manager liked me and it be hard for this branch manager to not even give me a chance. So what this guy is doing is implementing a "test" phase so that he can tell the first branch manager, "hey, I gave him a shot and he didn't meet the needs." Or something to that effect.

Man, it's pretty hard to ask the right questions without offending anyone. Have to play it so it sounds like I just want to clear a few things vs. accusing him of anything. After all, in his words, it's beneficial for both the company and me to determine if we are good fits for each other. Who could argue that? I can.

Thanks

You're already being FAWKED with. I would not go. I wouldn't burn bridges by telling them off, but if they ask why you should let them know in a professional manner why. If they want to know why it is important that they know why. A reputable company doesn't play games with their employees. They are starting off the relationship in a bad way and are already being dishonest. A reputable company would've already put it in writing and requested that you would sign the letter and return it to them. From the sounds of it, it sounds like a high turn over company. You're better off staying were you are at and continue looking. I have assemblers that make more than $8 an hour. Our assemblers start at $12 an hour. I have tech's without degrees making $20 an hour. A degreed engineer with a descent track record should be minimum $65k a year.

Good Luck

Hagen,

Please get my email from Jack.

Put madjacks in the subject line so i dont delete it by mistake.

I am working with a GOOD recruiting firm and currently looking at BEING the corporate recruiter for that firm.

Which one are you working with?
Orion, Lucas, Cameron-Brooks?

Let me know and I can probably set you up with something good or assist you.

I called a firm up one day, sent them my resume and in one week I had 8 offers sitting on my table and the phone ringing off the damn hook all day long.
