New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg stood firmly by his plan for a first-in-the-nation ban on large servings of soda and sugary drinks to fight obesity on Friday ? even as the city celebrated National Doughnut Day.

?It doesn?t sound ridiculous,? the mayor told TODAY?s Matt Lauer. ?In moderation, most things are OK.?

Bloomberg?s proposal would prohibit the sale of soda and other sweetened drinks in containers larger than 16 ounces that are sold in restaurants, movies theaters, at food carts and ball parks.

The best part is they would still be legal to buy at convenience stores and gas stations!??! In other words, this will stimulate nothing more than the price of soda at ball parks, movie theaters, etc..., will remain constant but now you will be forced to buy a 16 ounce soda for what you used to pay for a large. Has nothing to do with obesity. Has everything to do with pleasing his own "SIG's" in my opinion.

I'm in favor of a fat tax. Overweight people are a burden on the healthcare system and we all pay for their poor choices.

Everything you do is a "burden" to the healthcare system. Are little league sports going to be banned to only those athletic enuff to play?

not ignorance bro just me thinking I am cool.....it's "Special Interest Groups". LOL. I got a giggle out of this bro thanks. Reason being, I actually thought to myself when I typed it, "this is what they do right? (they being the people that actually know politics) they don't actually spell it out do they?"

"Well crap, I need to make sure I look like I know what the heck I am talking about, so I better abbreviate it!" :00hour :00hour

Just a little peek into the tiny mind there...lol.

This response is so ridiculous I hesitated to even respond. There is no doubt and mounds of research to show that overweight people cost much more to take care of. Diabetes, heart disease....the lost goes on. I'm not talking a few lbs overweight.

Exactly krc! I don't get it. Bloomberg got his third term that he shouldn't have. You would think that he would stay the course so to speak, but noooooo. I haven't fed my ego lately, so I need to restrict something in the name of public safety, which is the biggest bullshit ever. The government isn't concerned the least bit with safety. Yea, lets ban the big gulp. "How many cartons of Marlboro was that you needed sir?" "Twenty dollars on quick pix?" "Yes, the day old doughnuts are five for a dollar" "Okay, and two hotdogs, a Big Grab of Fritos, and ohhhhhhh, sorry sir, you're going to have to pour that into two cups. They are only $.99 each."
"Yes, each." "Well you do have two drinks now sir, besides, I am only looking out for your health."

BULLSHIT!!!

Saint,
While I do understand what you are saying, I don't know that I completely agree. I think what happens is you end up getting into a discrimination discussion. Meaning, people with sickle cell, Downs Syndrome, Autism, and mostly Manic Depressives are also a drain on the health care system. To what degree, I don't know. I know that people born with a condition can't control it etc..., but, how do you delineate between someone with inherent problems and someone that just isn't eating as healthy as you think they should. Just saying, where do you draw the line on a taxation based solely on individual appearance. I think a fat tax will stimulate lawmakers to make more tax laws much better than it will avert Jack from eating pie.

Hope that helps,
FDC

It's not.... just another way for the Government to control every part of your life :nono:

I am also hate our drug laws, another way to create a big empire to keep them in control. :0corn

I'm all for everything being legal. I just laugh at people getting all pissy about a fat tax but want drugs banned.

There's mounds of research those who play youth and high school football have a harder time medically in their 50's and 60's. Notice I'm not even mentioning college and pro's. Prohibition didn't work with alcohol. do you really think it will work with corn syrup? Like you I hesitated to even respond. Who decides on what is overweight? Another government employee?

How about the increase in casinos in this country? Don't you think that adds to poor health?

"the bunker"
he`s also celebrating "national donut day' or week or whatever simultaneously....only a true visionary would have the cojones to take a bold stand against soft drinks while celebrating possibly the only worse food nutritionally......multi-tasking.....

Dude, there are over 300 million people in this country. 1/3 of them are obese. There are maybe a few thousand people suffering the effects of traumatic encephalopathy. Ever hear of the word scale?

GREAT comparison :142smilie

Another burden on the health care system would be the ceo who makes 3 billion a year.
