It will be easy for all the children in school currently to pass the new language classes if they were offered, with the NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND ACT being employed they cant lose.....you can miss 50 days of school and your parents can pay for you to make up the days by the hour on Saturdays......wish I had the option to FU(K off all year long then make mom pay for me to go to school on Saturday and pass the grade as I learned absolutely nothing......this country is gonna have more then language barrier problems in the future, that was a wonderful idea of just pushing everyone along regardless if they REALLY had the smarts to move forward or not.:nono:

Well, at least YOU are finally posting YOUR thoughts, rather than just copy/pasting.

A little negative wouldn't you say, AR?

don't wanna burst anybody's bubble, and I'll qualify all my comments being that I'm not mr technology.....

I'm thinking down the road we will be doing more communicating via computers in one way or another. A simple program will clear up ANY of these "monster language barriers" being talked about.

Again, how about the kids just getting the basics down then moving on to real crazy shit like calculus, science, history, EATING and exercising correctly and learning how to SAVE $$.

every country has a ton od various dialects (sp) spread out across the country. Having spent time in a few Spanish speaking countries and watching my gf, born in Mehico, NOT able to understand what was being said to us let alone able to communicate.

Is there really any doubt that learning a new language expands one's mind and aids learning?

Dartmouth college study: "Researchers in a 14-year study found that kids educated in dual-language schools outperformed monolingual children on standardized tests. Students in dual-language schools did better than those in traditional bilingual education and those educated only in English."

Furthermore, the majority of the population of "westernized" countries (and many others too) learn English, so that they can communicate with foreigners. Why is it so below Americans to learn another language, especially one like Spanish when so many people here and around the world speak it?

This is such a stupid "issue" I can't believe I'm even replying to this thread and that people actually think otherwise. I said it once on this forum before and I'll say it again - linguistics is not a political issue! Get over it.

What don't you people get?????

The offspring of the idiots that breed here can't read and write anything! Can't add! Thus can't function and can't work! But they can sure as hell breed more idiots.

To hell with your stupid foreign language junk.

Have to walk before you can run. Sounds like many here missed the ability of basic comprehension in school.

Plenty of American born white kids who fit the same description you posted, I.O., and they live in areas other than South Side Chicago, too. Some who come from pretty affluent areas, that I have seen, that could not communicate worth crap, read anything multi-syllabic (let alone spell the words), do anything without a calculator math-wise, etc.

I would agree that immigrants and locally borne "minorities" should learn English, it's what this country is based on, essentially. But the original post here was what Obama was suggesting, which is another form of personal responsibility of our citizens to broaden themselves and make them more competitive in the world. Which I would think most white-bread parents could understand - and applaud. He never mandated anything or said anyone had to do anything. So the histrionics about his commentary, which was admirable and sensible, are pretty off base - at least in my view.

Hell, when I vacation in Mexico, the spanish I have learned comes in very handy. I think it only makes sense for our kids to learn whatever they can that might come in handy later in life.

Yes it was. And how dare that Obama suggest that it's good to learn languages. What a monster.

We should all join kokee in his outrage.

Interesting. Thought Scott cornered the market on bending handles, especially this one. You must be sober today.

on another note....

Glad everyone here comes from and is exposed to such a nice "white bread" (as Chadman put it)backround when it comes to the education system. FWIW, the Chicago Public School system here can't even afford pens, pencils, paper, or toilet paper, let alone computers or some French guy to come in and teach. I know on personal knowledge that many of the basic physical buildings in the system are completely shot. NO decent operating heat, water, windows etc. Throw in what I said above and I really believe, at least here in Chicago, were Mr Genius is supposed from, you can keep your foreign language crap.

This has absolutely NOTHING to do with politics. It's an awesome job though of ignoring the white whale in the room. He's gonna make a "fine" LMFAO politician.
