He continued his thoughts by expressing embarrassment at Americans? language skills compared to the Europeans. ?You should be thinking about how can your child become bilingual,? he said. ?We should have every child speaking more than one language. It?s embarrassing when Europeans come over here, they all speak English, they speak French, they speak German. And then we go over to Europe and all we can say is merci beacoup, right??

imo the above is going to prove more problematic for obama than whatever else he said in his talk about learning additional languages (which i agree with) other than english (which i believe should be the oficial language of this country..because it is the primary language of this country).

the reason why i think it will be a problem for obama is because it is a pattern of him talking down to the american people....as he did in his talk in s.f. a few months ago & even jackson in his remarks said that he felt that obama was talking down to the black people.

i'm sure there are other examples of this & i think this is a pattern that imo the republicans are going to pounce on in the fall.

Is there really any doubt that learning a new language expands one's mind and aids learning?

Dartmouth college study: "Researchers in a 14-year study found that kids educated in dual-language schools outperformed monolingual children on standardized tests. Students in dual-language schools did better than those in traditional bilingual education and those educated only in English."

Furthermore, the majority of the population of "westernized" countries (and many others too) learn English, so that they can communicate with foreigners. Why is it so below Americans to learn another language, especially one like Spanish when so many people here and around the world speak it?

This is such a stupid "issue" I can't believe I'm even replying to this thread and that people actually think otherwise. I said it once on this forum before and I'll say it again - linguistics is not a political issue! Get over it.

hh...

it's good seeing you post again...wish more females would post on the forum...

English should be the only language recognized in the US. I do however think it is beneficial for kids to learn Spanish since they will be a majority very soon if they are not already. We may all be forced to learn Spanish if Hussein Obama wins

When I lived in Africa, the kids sure didn't have a stable educational infrastructure, but they all spoke at least 3 languages fluently. I'm just suggesting that it might be more of a cultural dilemma than a political or even economical one. We are very ethnocentric and don't emphasize the value of other languages and cultures. I doubt any politician will ever change this, and damn obama for even suggesting we should consider catching up to other westernized nations where the majority of people speak more than one language!

I really want to be more like Africa

While I see your point, AR, I think it is kind of hypocritical if they do. I think that Obama has been speaking in many situations about all kinds of people stepping up and taking responsibility for things - something many here accuse (for lack of a better term) minorities - especially blacks - of not doing. Here, he is pretty much just telling the truth and showing how other countries do a better job of teaching their kids other languages, with a focus on the world, and not just their own yard. Again, he's not mandating anything, just showing ways that we (as a society) should change if we want to better our country.

I.O., I would agree that many parts of the Chicago school system (like many other big cities, and smaller rural areas) are hurting when it comes to finances, which IMO does hurt kids. We could talk about "No Child Left Behind", which has been a huge unfunded mandate by this administration (government, if you will), and many schools are having to make tough decisions. Of course, when I say kids having to deal with these school systems, that don't have the money for the things you describe, don't have the same opportunities as kids in "better" areas, then I am ripped and people scream everyone has the same opportunity. So, I don't know what the answer is, but as a parent, I think his point is well made.

Thinking were to good and above needing to learn a 2nd language. That time is gone. I told my kids and now my grandkids to learn a 2nd. It will in somecases make differance of getting the job over someone who didn't. It is a smart thing to do.

all i am saying chad is that a politician (no matter the party) running for office should not use the word "embarrass" when talking about the voters.....because the other side is going to pounce on that when the time is right. as far as obama is concerned, there are a few examples of him talking down to the voters...& i would be surprised if there isn't some kind of political ad highlighting this...maybe not by mccain's people but perhaps by the republican party....& imo this is a problem for obama.

the talk where he tells people to take responsiblity is a very good thing...besides bill cosby i don't remember anybody else in the black community talking about this....& btw this is against what jesse jackson & sharpton preach....which partly explains jesse's dead mic moment.

We've been the focus of the world for so long I guess its natural that we preach our way or the highway. I'm all for broadening the horizons of our kids by learning other languages. In this globalized world we now live in it only makes sense. However they need to be proficient in English, math and science before they start a 2nd language. Thats infinitely more important if you want to keep up with the Joneses, Gonzales and Yangs of the world.

While I also think our education system is broken, I think parents share a lot of the blame. Read to your kids and get em off the damn video games. Oh yeah how bout making em eat a carrot or an apple instead of that pack of Ho Hos. Encourage physical activity. Our kids are turning into a bunch of lazy lardasses. No disrespect to lardasses.

Scott-KOD- In regards to cow tipping. While driving through the backroads of west Georgia yesterday I became angered at all the round bales of hay I was noticing in the cow fields. What happened to a cow getting a good square meal?
