The cops are out of line, I guess, but why ask for trouble, give them your ID if that's what they want. Jesus! All trouble could have been avoided. I know, I know, we have rights but if you're not doing anything wrong, why not show your ID? What's the big deal?

It's a simple answer, you're not required to. A cop threatening legal action or detention because you don't present your identification, when you're not being detained or arrested, is against the law. More importantly it's a violation of your civil rights as afforded you by the constitution. So I guess my question is simple, what "degree" of liberty are you willing to forego? If it's okay to violate your civil liberties, how would you feel if they also asked you to surrender all your weapons in your home? Any level of civil control of your freedoms and liberties given over to government voluntarily will most certainly lead to ever more being requested. If you truly believe it's "no big deal" to surrender your civil liberties to the one organization who's ethics are so severely perverted already, don't bitch when they come for more.

Hope this helps,
FDC

What's even more odd is that two of the posters on here that I would consider staunch Republicans/conservatives, which generally means you're in favor of smaller government control, would be the first two to readily surrender their rights.
Just sayin. ....

Yeah I personally am skeptical of anyone working for the government. And I think the role of the government should be to avoid all intrusion into the lives of its citizens. They should be like referees; best appreciated when never heard from.

Well, when a cop asks me for my id to prove I'm not a criminal I hand it to him and don't argue with him, it's that simple, otherwise he thinks I am hiding something

Hope this helps

How does presenting your ID prove you're not a criminal? The only person in that case committing a criminal act is the officer that is knowingly violating your rights? You can't say you think that the government should avoid all intrusion into citizens lives, and in the same breath say you accept the most basic of intrusions?

Hope this helps,
FDC

I disagree, when a person of authority asks me for my ID I give it to him, of course I am not hiding anything...The officer was exactly right to question the guy especially when he was causing trouble filming the episode, he was antagonizing the officer on purpose being a smart ass, be glad I wasn't the cop I would have broken the window and yanked his smart ass out of the car, I was never one to question authority, you get more being nice than being an asshole in my experience..

Have a great day FDC :0008

What if a person of authority asked you for your guns? I just dont get how people who do not experience the negative effect of the violations of ones rights cant at least see the violation.

Sure it will never happen to you or me Hedgy cause we are white middle aged men, but your sure as fuck not going to tell me its not a big deal that an Americans rights are clearly being trampled. Why should he have to give in to the officer who is violating his rights, sure he could and get the issue for him over with, but its bigger then that. A man and his wife and/or girlfriend are driving home with their 2 week old child and a validation traffic stop or even the no lights bullshit stop escalates into the officers threatening this new mom with social services taking her kid if she doesnt step out of the vehicle. That's fucked up, plain and simple. Just like I said years ago when the Hispanics where getting carded for nothing but being hispanic, sure if you are legal show, but change doesnt happen unless you have the "legals" standing up for their own fucking rights.

Just like Rosa Parks could have easily went to the back of the bus, why cause a ruckus, why cause it was fucking wrong thats why. It's 2014 and technology is bringing more and more of these issues to light.

Fuck me. 2 week old baby in the back and they think he looks like a guy with warrants. Guy nailed it right on the head "every black man looks like someone with warrants."

I'd love to represent them against that municipality, clear clear violation of both their rights.

Bravfuckin-O Hedman. I couldn't agree more!
The thing about law and rights is that it applies to everyone! A peace officer violating your rights is a violation of law.

The videos you see now of unarmed black men being shot, harassed, beaten, are just a small sample size of things that went unchecked and basically dismissed by the public for decades. Not a single citizen should tolerate injustice.

What a load of shit. I feel sorry for this family as they're clearly being harassed. This cop's behavior is borderline sadistic. You can see the feelings of 'this isn't right' all over the other cop's face. I'm glad he stood up for his rights and hope they go to court.

Fuck you Skul for that go to Syria/Iraq BS. FUCK YOU!!!

That would clearly be a frivilous lawsuit and be thrown out of court. The guy filming was being an asshole, I don't blame the cop for being one back. Show your ID and cop checks it and its over unless you are hiding something.
