THE AMERICAN'S GUIDE TO FRANCE:

France is a medium-sized foreign country situated
in the continent Of Europe.

It is an important member of the world community, though
not nearly as important as it thinks.

It is bounded by Germany, Spain, Switzerland and some
smaller nations of no particular importance and
with not very good shopping.

France is a very old country with many treasures, such
as the Louvre and Euro Disney.

Among its contributions to western civiliZation are
champagne, Camembert cheese and the guillotine.

Although France likes to think of itself as a modern
nation, air conditioning is little used and it is next
to impossible for Americans to get decent Mexican food.

One continuing exasperation for American visitors is
that local people insist on speaking in French, though
many will speak English if shouted at.

Watch your money at all times.

THE PEOPLE
France has a population of 57 million people. 52
million of these drink and smoke (the other 5 million
are small children).

All French people drive like lunatics, are dangerously
over sexed, and have no concept of standing patiently
in line.

The French people are in general gloomy, temperamental,
proud, arrogant, aloof and disciplined; those are their
good points.

Most French citizens are Roman Catholic, though you
would hardly guess it from their behavior.

Many French are communists.

Men sometimes have girls' names like Marie or Michel,
and they kiss each other when they meet.

American travelers are advised to travel in groups and
wear baseball caps and colorful trousers for easier
recognition.

SAFETY
In general, France is a safe destination, although
travelers must be aware that from time to time it is
invaded by Germany.

Traditionally, the French surrender immediately.

A tunnel connecting France to Britain beneath the
English Channel has been opened in recent years
to make it easier for the French government to
flee to London during future German invasions, and for
them to offload all their illegal immigrants.

HISTORY
Charlemagne discovered France in the Dark Ages.

Other important historical figures are Louis XIV, the
Huguenots, Joan of Arc, Jacques Cousteau and Charles de
Gaulle, who was President for many years and is now an
airport.

GOVERNMENT
The French form of government is democratic but
noisy. Parliament's principal occupation is setting off
atomic bombs in the South Pacific and acting indignant
and surprised when other countries complain.

According to the most current American State department
intelligence, the President is now someone named
Jacques. Further information is not available at this
time.

CULTURE
The French pride themselves on their culture,
though it is not easy to see why. All their music
sounds the same and they have never made a movie that
you would want to watch for anything but the nude
scenes.

CUISINE
Let's face it, no matter how much garlic you put on it,
a snail is just a slug with a shell on its back.

Croissants on the other hand, are excellent, although
it is impossible for most Americans to pronounce this
word. In general, travelers are advised to stick to
cheeseburgers.

ECONOMY
France has a large and diversified economy, second only
to Germany's in Europe, which is surprising because the
French hardly work at all.

If they are not spending four hours dawdling over
lunch, they are on strike and blocking the roads with
their trucks and tractors. France's principal exports,
in order of importance to the economy, are wine,
nuclear weapons, perfume, guided missiles, champagne,
guns, grenade launchers, land mines, tanks, attack
aircraft, miscellaneous armaments and cheese.

PUBLIC HOLIDAYS
France has more holidays than any other nation in the
world. Among It's 361 national holidays are:
197 Saints' days,
37 National Liberation Days,
16 Declaration of Republic Days,
54 Return of Charles de Gaulle-in-triumph-as-if-he-won-the-
war-single-handed Days,
18 Napoleon-sent-into-Exile-Days,
17 Napoleon-Called-Back-from-Exile-Days,
and
2 "France is Great and the Rest of the World Stinks" Days.

CONCLUSION
At least it's not Germany.

As jay Leno said the other night," How can we expect the French to help us get Saddam out of Iraq, when we couldn't get the French to help us get the Germans out of France".

I wouldn't be surprised if it is found that after the war that the US will find evidence showing some of french's companies trading illegal contraband to Iraq.

Senor , think about it , "something is amiss" . Would France, Germany, Belgium , veto without reason ? Look behind the curtain to see the man pulling the strings . The "givens" in this equation are (as i humbley see them ) AMERICA is THE superpower on the face of the earth at this time and Saddam , puts liitle value on human life unless it concerns his regime. The French, Germans , Belgiums , KNOW THIS . Why on earth would they veto this request from Turkey ? This won't take much digging , use your own premises , and follow the money .

I wonder if France knows if Hitler would have stopped at Poland and France. No attacks on Russia or England. The world may just have left Hitler keep them.

Thier military history speaks for itself. The French sat on their asses and let Hitler take the Sudentland and numerous other small pieces of Europe before finally acting. They never figured Hitler's Panzers would zoom through the Ardennes and end-run them, but they did. Gee what a shock that must have been for them. And I won't even get into the Phu in '54. What a disgrace.

My girl and I travel quite a bit and I have let her know that I personally have a life time boycott on this shit hole of a Country. And I haven't even mentioned how the whole damn place smells like a bag of assholes.

Are you a complete idiot? I've seen this little"game" you play in other threads where you take the dumbest stance and fight like mad to defend it. It's cute.

I guess if your forced to eat sh-t all day you learn to like the taste.

IRAQ.....N. KOREA....FRANCE- How's that for a trifecta? :thefinger :thefinger

Well, I don't think it's secret knowledge that France has big oil contracts with the Iraqis. Flip it aorund for a second here. Imagine if France had a problem with the Saudis for whatever reasons their president could dream up. Would the US support a French invasion of Saudi Arabia? I highly doubt it, even if the French thought that their invasion of Saudi Arabia was highly justified.

French has had dubious performance in a few wars, but that's beside the point. Germany lost two big wars this century. England was getting owned by the Germans till we stepped in. Italy loses everything it fights. And, they've all also had good conquests over the past 200 years or so, except maybe the Italians.

And, stop the France bashing till you've actually been there or have even a shred of knowledge about their culture. If you want to be a pussy because they won't get behind the US for a war they don't think is justified, it's your loss. It's got beautiful countryside, beautiful coastlines, old, old buildings. The best museums in the world. And they LOVE to eat and drink and relax. If you criticize them for not working and preferring to vacation, eat, drink, and takes naps, its YOU that has his priorities mixed up, not the French. It's a great place to visit or live.

And, beside my sister lives there and is married to a Frenchman (who, by the way, supports the US and is rather hawkish in most matters).

You want to talk about bailing someone's ass out of a war, why don't you do a little reading up on the American Revolution. Does the name LaFayette ring any bells? (I'm guessing not) We went over there and begged them for months to help us out with the war we started.

We weren't even going to fight WWII (debatable) until we got bombed by the Japanese.

Furthermore, Petey's buddy Clyde likes France, so that's all you need to know.

My hawkish bretheren:

Private Petey is right about his support of TheShrimp who supports France (in my best Howard Johnson impersonation from Blazing Saddles).

If it weren't for the French, we would be drinking tea and eating crumpets around 4:00PM each day and laying a goal and one-half on Manchester United over Leeds.

Concerning Frenchmen fighting, does anyone recall a Frenchman named Napoleon Bonaparte from a couple of centuries ago. If I recall correctly, he strung together a few wins in a row.

DeGaulle was instrumental in WWII. I think most of you like to identify someone (or some country) whose not part of your belief system and trash the hell out of him (or it).

Kids, the world ain't black and white as many of you see it. It is many shades of grey.

Shrimp,

My wife knows somebody who was in France on 9/11. The friend went to the store with her young child (age3) to buy some supplies, since she couldn't get back to the states immediately after the mass murders on 9/11.The store owner asked the woman if she was an American. The woman said yes. The store owner wouldn't sell her anything, once she found out that the woman was an American. The woman then asked if she could just buy something for her child. The store owner became very beligerent, rambling in french & spitting on the woman, who was holding her child.

My wife's brother & his wife are French-Canadians, who don't speak English, visited France a few years ago. They said that some of the french people they met humiliated them & was very critical of them because the Canadian french that they speak is different from the french spoken in France. The french people that were critical of them acted like they were better.

When camp x-ray was first opened to put the terrorists thugs that were caught in Afghanistan & other areas, there were french politicians(among other people who were not french) who were very critical of the way the thugs were being treated, eventhough they had no idea about the actual treatment. They stopped once they learned that the thugs were being treated. But you would think that before they spoke they would know about the issue..But they saw, in their eyes an oppurtunity to jump at the Americans.

I understand that France is a beautiful country, but the politicians & the general population have constantly belittled the Americans for many years. There comes a time when you say enough is enough!

So, IMO the french & it's politicians can go fuk themselves!

I wish we had more global support, but I don't blame the French for wanting to stay out.

I've always admired the French for their ability to place a high priority on such things as enjoying life. Sign me up for drinking wine and eating all day!

AR182--not saying that your story is not true, but it seems to be a long chain of people to keep all of the facts straight.

My buddies that went to World Cup '98 came back singing high praise of the country and the people that they met.

Every country has their good and bad representation. People, in general, are good natured. That's why I love travelling--to meet new people and see new things.

MMMMM! Eclairs!
