MONROE, Michigan (CNN) -- Sen. Barack Obama said firmly that families are off-limits in the campaign for president, reacting to news that GOP running mate Sarah Palin's 17-year-old daughter is pregnant.

Sen. Barack Obama campaigns in Monroe, Michigan, on Monday.

"Let me be as clear as possible," Obama said. "I think people's families are off-limits, and people's children are especially off-limits. This shouldn't be part of our politics. It has no relevance to Gov. Palin's performance as governor or her potential performance as a vice president."

Obama said reporters should "back off these kinds of stories" and noted that he was born to an 18-year-old mother.

"How a family deals with issues and teenage children, that shouldn't be the topic of our politics, and I hope that anybody who is supporting me understands that's off-limits."

I thought it was obvious but I guess I have to remember my audience - I am referring to Obama's supporters who apparently love him get arent following what he supposedly represents.

You are so much more intelligent than anyone on this board that it must be very difficult for you to communicate with your audience. But please keep trying. I for one try to soak up as much wisdom from the fount of your boundless intellect as my small vessel will allow. Thank you for your efforts.

I am still trying to crack this cryptic koan, but Buddha willing I will come to understand it.

So much for a new kind of politics. Lets get back to "McCain has an illegitimate tar baby" push pole Rove style campaigning.

WTF do you guys want? Obama just can't win on this issue. There will always be lunatic bloggers on both sides. It only matters how each candidate handles these issues. And the press to a lesser extent.

He puts it out there that families are off-limits. There is ALWAYS an ulterior motive, huh? Cindy is left alone, Michelle gets mocked. The Bush twins get a free pass, Chelsea was ridiculed at every turn about her awkward looks back then.

Laura Bush is adored by the MSM. Tipper Gore and Teresa Kerry were evil.

Keep talking about the 'liberal' press.

Would you prefer that Obama came out firing about the pregnancy? I mean, man. Can you self-described intelligent people say anything more idiotic to your 'audience.'

Well her mother does not like sex education in high school.

I just heard that too.

Sex education does not start young enough. What a joke.

We should be handing out condoms. Kids are going to have sex. No one is going to stop it. No one.

I have to say that i'm disappointed the RNC has been disrupted. I was looking forward to laughing at the BS we get this week.

Don't get me wrong i'm no fan of Obama, but the arrogance of the BS coming from the red side is a complete joke.

Wouldn't it be nice if people actually talked about real issues. How about we talk about how our monetary and financial system is about to collapse? Tick tock.

like you expected bock to personally attack a 17 year old girl?....lol

This is what I mean.

No, of course he wouldn't attack a young girl, nor would any politician.

The guy says that this situation is off base and any of his staffers will be fired if they mention it even in the context of Sarah. He STILL gets bashed.

I mean, WTF?

the "dailykos" website should be grouped in the same league with the neonazi's and KKK in my opinion after what they have done the last 2 days concerning this story.

If the dems' had any honor, they would never be associated with that website again. However, i don't see that happening.
