3 HUGE REASONS
If you break down all the x's and o's, I give the Niners a slight edge on paper (3 points by my numbers). Not nearly the edge the Broncos or the Patriots commanded against the Ravens the past 2 weeks. I strongly feel that the following 3 items are being overlooked in this game. I believe that these are HUGE and I mean HUGE advantages for the Ravens in an otherwise very close match-up.
1. QUARTERBACK
To keep this as simple as possible, Joe Flacco is a BIG GAME player. Kyle Kaepernick is not.
Flacco has proven that he comes up big in the big game. His level of play rises in the postseason especially the last 2 years. He played more than well enough to win the AFC last year (4-1 last 2 years). Joe now has 12 postseason games (8-4 record) to his experience. Joe Cool is confident, capable and mentally ready for the BIG game. He is making passes that are just undefendable, and with Bolden and Torrey making the ridiculous catches they have been, neither the Bronco's world beating defense or the new and improved Patriot defense have slowed Flacco down
Kaepernick has started 11 NFL games, and yes has looked superb. He looked superb in his 4 year career at Nevada also, putting up sick numbers and lots of points and wins to go along with it. Colin led his Wolf Pack to 4 straight bowl games. However, that is where his success stopped. Kaepernick flat out choked in the "big game" all 4 years. They managed to win just the last of his 4 bowl games, a 20-13 win over the offensively retarded (yes I said it) Eagles of Boston College. He rushed for only 22 yards that game, threw a INT after only throwing 2 all year and threw for a modest 20 for 33 for 192, all statistics way down from his season averages. The 3 years before that were all Bowl game losses. In 2009, he scored only 10 points after averaging over 35 pts/game that season. Again rushed for only 23 and threw for 155 yards. WAY DOWN. In 2008, he lost to the mighty Terps, threw for 3 INTS and rushed for a whopping 15 yards. His freshman year he got shut out throwing 13 for 31. His history says: BIG GAME=BIG CHOKE.
Flacco has more playoff experience than Kaepernick has NFL experience. I see the QB advantage for the Ravens in this game as HUMONGOUS!
By the way only 3 QBs in history have thrown for 8+ TDs and ZERO INTs in the playoffs. Their Superbowl record? 3-0
2. Kicking
Justin Tucker vs David Ackers. Ackers was a 65% kicker the last half of the year. He made only 2 out of 7 kicks over 40 yards and missed 3 of 16 inside 40 yards. Ackers went 1 out of 2 in the playoffs so far. Everyone on of his stats were below the league average. Tucker was most impressive his rookie year. He went a perfect 16 of 16 inside 40 yards. Tucker was impressive going 4 for 4 outside of 50 yards and 10 of 13 from 40-49. Tucker sent 30 out of 33 kicks through the uprights for the season plus added on 2 for 2 in the playoffs including a 47 yard game winner in double overtime after going 4 hours without a field goal opportunity.
If this is a close game and comes down to the kickers, the Ravens have another ENORMOUS edge in this category.
3. Intangibles
The Ravens feed their players antlers to chew on. How can you beat that? Seriously, this entire escapade will do nothing but "agitate" Ray Lewis and it has pissed him off. As if he or his team need any more motivation, now they have this "us against the world" mentality. It worked brilliantly in 2000 with the Ray Lewis trial so fresh in everyone's mind.
The Ravens honestly believe that they are destined to win by a higher force. SERIOUSLY! When you buy into that mentality, you can become invincible. The Ravens have taken down 2 huge favorites and 2 future HOF quarterbacks to get here. They pulled a 4th and 29 out of their ass just to make the playoffs (they don't get in if they lose that game).
The Ravens are loose, having fun and enjoying the moment. They had "the best practice of the year" on Wednesday (Jan 30). The 49ers seem tight and serious. Jimbo Harbaugh is a tense, freak-out coach and his tension is spilling over to his team. That is NOT a healthy state of mind to be in heading into a big game. The Ravens are riding this magic carpet ride all the way to the Superbowl win.
Prediction: Ravens 30 49ers 21
Play: Ravens +3.5
Good Luck to All
Props will be posted late Saturday. I have won $ both weeks I posted props so far on the Ravens playoff games.
