I am a structural engineer and I can confirm that Raymond's recommendation for a 6" thick slab is certainly sufficient for a hot tub. The only suggestion that I would give would be to thicken the slab at the perimeter to be 12" deep by 8" wide with a continuous #4 bar centered in the thicked portion, 3" clear from the soil. I would also agree with Raymond that the slab should have a layer of 6X6 W1.4XW1.4 welded wire mesh reinforcing which should be supported during the pour so that it is in the top 1/3 of the slab.

small footer is fine, but its only a slab for a hot tube , not a house:

There you go penguin except id go deeper with the footings. Below the frost line and not as wide. then again this guys says its safe it should be. rebar is a nice touch as the guy stated.

opps i said id wouldn't make the footings so wide because i thought you had eight foot up there. My bad.

The perimeter turndown is not a footing but rather a barrier to keep the soil beneath the edges of the slab from being washed out. Granted, the continuous bar that I recommended provides additional stiffness in this minature grade beam but would hardly be sufficient for the loads of a house. The additional cost is almost negligible.

Do not forget to call a Professional Surveyor and Mapper llike myself to lay the hot tub out and make sure there are no set backs or easements that the Hot tub may encroach apon. Should be able to get it done for $300. The cost would be negligible. Only pushing the slab to a total of $2300. Not bad for a small slab?

don't forget to pull a permit...:mj07:

And while your at it, get a hold of the county, and have them bring over 10 road crew with those bright vests, give them each a shovel to lean on, and make sure their thermos' are filled with coffee, so they can supervise:SIB .

Ray,
What about covering the concrete for this time of the year? Let him know about that if needed;)
