red wine

The thing about wine is that its all subjective to each individual palete. One of the two chemical senses (the other being smell), taste is stimulated through the contact of certain chemicals in substances with clusters of taste bud cells found primarily on the tongue.

However, taste is a complex sensing mechanism that is also influenced by the smell and texture of substances. An individual's unique sense of taste is partially inherited, but factors such as culture and familiarity can help determine why one person's favorite food made be hot and spicy while another cannot get enough chocolate. Basically, I cant handicap what wine to recommend for a big, dumb moose.

Hesitant to go as far as listing specific wines, but its a good rule of thumb for beginners that easier drinking varietals tend to please the greater number of people. With that, Id recommend starting out with either a Merlot or a Pinot Noir. These tend to have softer tannins/acidity and more fruit while being lower in alcohol. Furthermore, try and stick to domestic wine for starters and choose California over Oregon.

Id steer clear of the box wine/big bottles until you find something you like. There should be 15-25 wines in your local grocery or package store for under $20 that fit the bill. Wine is perhaps the only thing I know more about than football. Let me know if you have any other questions.

so, my cardiologist tells me that drinking red wine can improve my low HDL and suggests I do so.

I know nothing about it, and have no idea if I even like it (highly doubtful).

Any suggestions on what kind to get? :mj06: :mj07:

Clint: Goto the store and get some Yellow Tail Cabernet (either the red label or purple label). It is cheap, but is pretty good for the money. Drink a small glass with your dinner and a glass of water. The taste will grow on you, but this will help you get through that "tough love" stage.

1. Do not refrigerate it, even after opening.
2. It will go bad after a couple days. Won't make you sick, but the taste will get bitter on you.

i actually started drinking this about six months ago.

I haven't seen anyone recommending these but you might also try an Australian shiraz. They are usually fruitier and not as tannic and smoky as other red wines.

If there are any wineries near you, take a tour. They always end in a tasting center where you can try several of their wines and find what appeals to your palate. Of course, they give you the ability to purchase there as well.

Good luck with following the doctor's orders!
